2023.06.06 19:17 Anneturtle92 Ivy had almost all of her teeth pulled today. Here's your reminder to pay attention to your cat's dental health!
 | She has 7 teeth left (3 fangs and some of her bottom front teeth). Some teeth had already fallen out without me noticing (5 of them). Many teeth barely had any root left (tooth resorption). Her gums were severly infected (mild periodontitis). Ivy is only 4 years old, so this is not something only old cats have to worry about! According to the vet it's a flaw very common with pure bred cats and has to do with their immune system having an exaggerated reaction to plaque. Please take care of your cat's dental hygiene. I thought giving her dental chewing candy was enough, clearly it wasn't. Ivy never gave me any sign of her discomfort, but this had to hurt her a lot. She'll be feeling a lot better now, and thankfully cats can eat just fine without most of their teeth. But I've learned my lesson and I hope this serves as a wake up call for some of you as well. For reference I drive NK around in my personal car and do not get mileage reimbursement, but I use their credit card for gas. I live in TX.
So recently my car AC went out and it’s going to cost $1,700 to repair. DB sent me $400 to help out which I appreciate so much. I just had to get all four tires replaced because one had a nail and the tread on the others were unsafe. I got them replaced today and that was $500.
Since driving NK, I’ve had to get oil changes more often and my tread wears down faster. Just normal maintenance, but I need it more often. Should I ask for mileage reimbursement? I feel like I would be taking advantage of them since they do so much for me and just gave me $400 extra for my car. Idk if there’s any laws regarding it since I’m in TX.

Today, June 6, 2023, marks the 1 year "anniversary" of when I self-surrendered to the Federal Prison Camp in Oxford, WI.
I thought it would be an interesting exercise to note SOME of what I have done and not done over the past 12 month.
Since June 6, 2022, I :
--Have not had a phone conversation with my wife or family member for longer than 15 minutes. (those are the only people I talk to).
--Have only eaten my food off of a brown cafeteria tray or out of a plastic bowl.
--Have only drank coffee or water. No type of fruit juice or soda (the soda is by choice).
--Have only worn brown shirts, green pants and green button up shirts (for work or visits), grey sweats (1 pair), grey shorts.
--Have only worn tennis shoes or work boots (both black).
--Have only used what would be considered a public bathroom and shower room.
--Have not taken a shower without wearing shower shoes.
--Have brushed my teeth 2x daily and flossed every night (by choice--I do not want any teeth problems in Prison and dental care is not something that comes along often).
--Have not spent 1 second on the internet (try THAT one yourself!!!).
--Have not used/touched a cell phone.
--Have read from a book or newspaper EVERY SINGLE DAY.
--Have not gone more than 24 hours without reading the Bible.
--Have not gone more than 2 days without exercise.
--Have not ate a fresh fruit or vegetable.
--Have not been on a public road.
--Have not slept on a real mattress or pillow.
--Have not used any food utensil other than a plastic spork.
--Have not had coffee from a coffee maker (instant coffee + hot water from a faucet).
--Have not taken a shower with any control over the water temperature (Super Hot = 2x a week, Cold = 3x a week, Luke warm = 2x a week).
--Have not walked on real grass.
--Have not sat on anything but a plastic chair.
--Have not smelled any type of fragrance, cologne, perfume (other than when my wife visits).
Lastly, I have never been more committed to a daily routine with the goal of bettering myself physically, mentally, and spiritually while preparing myself to be a superior husband, son, brother, future employee, and overall outstanding member of society when I return home at the end of the year.

I’m a 26M, graduated college about 1.5 years ago and moved to a HCOL area. My job pays fairly well and I have been working towards FIRE. This year I was on track to max my Roth IRA, HSA, and come pretty close to maxing my 401k (only needed about another 3.5k). I also have built up my emergency fund to about $3.5k throwing in $300 a month. It’s not a full 3-6 months of expenses like I hear recommended, but I didn’t want to miss out on too much tax advantaged growth opportunities.
I need some dental work done, in total after I have maxed what my insurance will cover and drained my HSA, I still will owe about $7k. Knowing that I needed to spend all of my emergency fund and then some hurt, but I could have all this paid off this year. I didn’t intend to use my HSA for medical expenses directly, but I’m glad I have the option for emergencies.
Last week, I injured my ankle at the gym and now need a surgery and rehab. I don’t know exactly how much it will end up costing, but I would be shocked if I don’t hit my out of pocket max of $5k.
Last month, I felt like I was doing so well and even though my emergency fund wasn’t fully built up, I felt like things I could weather the storm if I had an emergency. Today, I’m looking at a $12k emergency with only $3.5k saved and I’m feeling financially broken.
I’m struggling with next steps. I could withdraw my Roth contributions and pay it all down, but it’s unlikely I will be able to replace it all by the end of the year. I could cut my 401k down to just employer match and spend the rest on (hopefully) keeping up with medical/dental bills. Or I could go into medical debt. All of them sound like horrible options.

(Cross posted to AITA sub) Not too sure how to title this but I’ll make it as short as humanely possible. I (23F) have dated my girlfriend (26F) for about three years. We were long distance for about a year, i was stationed overseas and working on my medical retirement but always made sure to fly back to the states and see her whenever I could. We always had fun, she wasn’t like anyone I had ever met before and I loved learning her mind and what made her exactly who she is. I was completely swept away by her mannerisms, the way she spoke and her knowledge. After moving to our new state, she got a job and a couple weeks into it, she was acting a little off. I noticed small changes in the way she spoke and her body language but i decided new things required some time to settle in and left it at that for a while.
One morning, I noticed it wasn’t really getting better and I had this feeling in the pit of my stomach. After a little while, she told me she had met someone at work who she found attractive and thought she might have feelings for. She asked to take some space so after a couple hours, we talked about it. I was really hurt. She told me that he got too drunk and needed somewhere to stay, he would be on the couch and gone in the morning. Oh also, she threw in she had known he was gay for a while now but decided to not tell me because she “wanted me to trust her regardless” which, makes sense I guess. I left that night and the next day, boundaries were set and feelings were addressed and apologized for. One night as we were hanging out at my parents, she looked at me and told me she wanted to have sex. I knew it would complicate things but i wanted it. We hung out every day after that and reconnected.
I got my annual PAP, they have come back abnormal in the past so I get them done yearly. This year was no different, high risk HPV and abnormal cells present. The doc scheduled me for a cervical biopsy and over the course of a couple weeks, i was diagnosed with stage 4A cervical cancer. I took time to absorb it, i told her. She was devastated and asked me to spend the night. We talked for hours. I’m terrified and she makes me feel like I can be a normal 23yo around her.
Today, she was depressed the moment she woke up. She texted letting me know that she wanted alone time tonight. I quickly understood and while it did make me a little sad, I didn’t mind all that much and we said goodbye for the night and parted ways.
I called her and let her know I was home, we talked for a little about wanting to get married before I travel to TX to get chemo for the next couple months and we were both on the “yes when it’s right” train. I (27F) have been smoking on and off for the last 10 years - would quit when I was in season for athletics, pick it up in the summers, rinse and repeat until graduating and there was no “in season” anymore. I’ve quit countless times for various reasons - money, fed up with having to excuse myself, or smelling like an ashtray, dental work, not being able to focus, health anxiety, shame, you name it!
I’ve tried NRT, switching to vaping, switching to zyns, wellbutrin, CBT, Allen Carr, quitting apps, journaling (again you name it!) and it feels like I just haven’t cracked the code yet. There were times where I went months without touching nicotine and rarely felt cravings and found it easy… only to fall right back, there were other times where I white knuckled it and was so miserable I refused to cave… only to fall back.
Today is day 3. I’m reminding myself one day at a time, and that if I go buy a pack I start the cycle again. I’m reminding myself of Allen Carr - that it’s disgusting and doesn’t help me and I don’t ACTUALLY want it, but it just doesn’t feel like I’m fully convinced deep down. I don’t yet feel like I’ll never touch another or have confidently smoked my last and am now a “non smoker”. I’m trying not to touch NRT and get that nicotine hit and reset the little monster. I’m waiting for the day I wake up and am just plain tired of what I’m doing to myself, but I also feel like I need to make a better plan than just suffer through and pray… need to get a good routine going so it’s not all I think about, you know? But that also feels like an excuse of “it’s not the right time”.
I know it gets easier with time, but how did you set yourself up for success?
I’ve tried listing and revisiting my quitting reasons, telling friends/family, etc but it leads to pure shame when I fail. I want to reset my mind and make it a positive thing, not one rooted in shame, you know?

Today I took TX exam remotely. I had 15 minutes left and I was deep into a long question. All of the sudden, the invigilator asked me to show a 360’ view of my room. Ok, no problem, then asked me to show my desk. I did. I couldnt type in the chat box and I didnt know what was going on, already 5 minutes were lost from my last 15 minutes. Then they told me that I shouldnt have had a bottle on my desk because it is not fully transparent, it is black-shaded bottle. (No labels or anything on it) When I took pictures of my desk the bottle was there and nobody said anything at the check in. They let me put the bottle away from my desk and carry on but I have already lost 5-6 minutes, I was very stressed, plus I had to get my head around the question again to pick up where I left off. Does it worth to file for mitigation circumstences or I just have to accept that this is a part of remote exam. This was my 6th remote exam and I have never had any issue before.
