AofH: Anxiety, Dread, Fear

2023.05.23 16:55 Canuck_Voyageur AofH: Anxiety, Dread, Fear

Brene lets me down on this one. She doesn't really define it. The closest is

Anxiety

“Escalating loss of control, worst-case-scenario thinking and imagery, and total uncertainty.”

APA An emotion characterized by feelings of tension, worried thoughts and physical changes like increased blood pressure.
Excerpt From: Brown, Bren. “Atlas of the Heart : Mapping Meaningful Connection and the Language of Human Experience (9780399592577).” iBooks.
Oxford: a feeling of worry, nervousness, or unease, typically about an imminent event or something with an uncertain outcome.
National Cancer institute: Feelings of fear, dread, and uneasiness that may occur as a reaction to stress. A person with anxiety may sweat, feel restless and tense, and have a rapid heart beat.
In her TV series, Brene goes into anxiety a bit deeper with "functional anxiety" -- I am anxious about a specific target. Taking action about that target can reduce the anxiety. I don't remember now what the other one was. General anxiety? disordered anxiety. This is anxiety without a target.
Intolerance for uncertainty is a big contributing factor. If you can cultivate a tolerance for uncertainty -- become more 'go-with-the-flow' you will be less anxious. For me considering the bad outcome, and then saying, "so what?" can help.
Two common coping mechanisms: Worry, and avoidance. Neither work well. Worry is the thinking part of anxiety. Chain of negative thoughts about bad events that could happen. Brene says that worry is not helpful. I sort of agree. Worry itself isn't helpful, but turning worry into making contingency plans can be helpful to reduce the axiety. For me, having a plan for a way to cope with what I'm anxious about is very helpful.
Avoidance: not showing up, trying to dodge the event. Not showing up in interpersonal events decreases your repuation for "reliability" which impacts people's trust of you.
“In her book The Dance of Fear, Dr. Harriet Lerner writes, “It is not fear that stops you from doing the brave and true thing in your daily life. Rather, the problem is avoidance. You want to feel comfortable, so you avoid doing or saying the thing that will evoke fear and other difficult emotions. Avoidance will make you feel less vulnerable in the short run, but it will never make you less afraid.”
Excerpt From: Brown, Bren. “Atlas of the Heart : Mapping Meaningful Connection and the Language of Human Experience (9780399592577).” iBooks.
Anxiety and excitement feel the same. The label can affect how we experience them. Such is the power of language.
I normally consider anxiety a low form of fear. And what I'm fearing is usually being seen as unprepared, incompetent. So in a sense anxiety is the fear of future shame.
I also make this distinction: Anxiety has a target. Dread is fear that for me is unfocused, and can have more than embarrassment or shame as the outcome.
And checking this, I'm wrong.
Merriam Webster: to fear greatly, to feel extreme reluctance to meet or face; to be fearful. Fear in the face of impending evil.
Dictionary.com terror or apprehension as to something in the future; great fear.
So dread is anxiety writ large.
Both anxiety and dread are future directed. Brene says fear is NOW, and short term.
I find I can deal with NOW better than I can deal with the future. I have coped with life and death situations several times, and did so coolly and without panic. I disagree with Brene about short term. The situation can be very quick, or they can be more long term. The longest high risk one was getting a group of 30 teens down to timberline in the face of darkness and an approaching storm. This may blur the line between anxiety and fear.

2023.05.05 14:32 JasonLantz Vote Tomorrow, Saturday May 6th from 7am to 7pm

Alright, this is it. Election day is 24 hours away. All the election related posts will soon become a thing of the past. Turnout from early vote is less than 7% of registered voters. Your vote could make all the difference.
Voting should take you no more than 15 minutes in most locations. Please take the time to vote on Saturday.

What You Need

You must be a registered voter. Not sure? Check here: https://apps2.collincountytx.gov/ElectionsPublic/VoterRegSearch
You will need some form of ID. You likely have your Driver's License which will work. You do not need to bring your voter registration card. See below for full ID requirements if you don't have a current and valid Driver's License.

Election Day Voting Locations

You can vote at any polling location. If you're out at your kid's soccer game across town, stop in and vote at the nearest location, no problem. Just Vote!
All polls are open from 7am to 7pm

Alternate IDs

(From https://www.collincountytx.gov/elections/pages/faq.aspx)
A voter must show one of the following forms of acceptable photo identification at the polling location before the voter may be accepted for voting, unless the voter does not possess and cannot reasonably obtain one of these forms of acceptable photo identification or the voter qualifies for one of the other exemptions identified below:
With the exception of the U.S. citizenship certificate, the identification must be current or, for voters aged 18-69, have expired no more than 4 years before being presented for voter qualification at the polling place. A person 70 years of age or older may use a form of identification listed above that has expired for any length of time if the identification is otherwise valid.
If a voter does not possess one of the forms of acceptable photo identification listed above, and the voter cannot reasonably obtain such identification, the voter may execute a Reasonable Impediment Declaration and present a copy or original of one of the following supporting documents:
The address on an acceptable photo identification or a supporting document, if applicable, does not have to match the voter’s address on the list of registered voters.

2023.04.22 04:47 Roastedhamz The Naked Man

It was like 3:00am on a random Tuesday last March (2022). My friend was driving my boyfriend and me to the airport from the Timberline Dr. area. We pull up the hill and at the peak our headlights hit a completely naked man out for a stroll. He doesn't even look at us or change his stride even though he's suddenly illuminated. He didn't have any shoes, anything in his hands, he was just completely butt ass naked. He just kept on walking at a normal pace. He was an athletic white man, probably 30ish with curly brown hair. We all think about him sometimes. Has anyone else encountered the naked man?! Never thought about posting about it until today.

2022.11.30 19:22 dber08 dber08's Top 10 in New England - LONG READ

This is a New England list…I’ve never been to whiteface or gore anyways so ta ta for now, NY state!
TL;DR
  1. Sugarloaf
  2. Sugarbush
  3. Jay Peak
  4. Cannon
  5. MRG
  6. Saddleback
  7. Smuggler’s Notch
  8. Bretton Woods
  9. Magic
  10. Wildcat
  11. Honorable Mentions
Not all skiers are alike. We all share a passion for the mountains & sliding down them, but different aspects of the experience appeal to different people. Some like to cram in as much skiing as possible and ride up the mountain comfortably, while others are simply looking to find peace and quiet in the outdoors, away from their daily lives. Sometimes a great meal makes a ski day, be it on the hill or in the valley, while other times claiming the most difficult run in the region in excellent conditions defines the day. Every aspect of the experience can make or break it for different people.
My ski priorities may differ from yours and are essential to understanding my list. Why listen to me? I don’t care - don’t listen to me if you don’t want to. I’m bored and have been skiing in New England my entire life (well since I was 3 years old anyways, coming up on 33 now). Anyways, here is what is most important to me:
· I don’t like crowds. This is my highest priority when rating a ski experience. I didn’t schlep myself to the middle of nowhere, buy expensive ski equipment and purchase an expensive ski pass to jockey for a table in the lodge, stand on a lift line for 25 minutes, and ski the same scraped-off runs that everyone else is skiing. This will rule out a lot of the more typical “top ten” resorts. I’m looking at you Killington, Mt Snow, Stowe, Loon, Okemo, Stratton. I’m not spending my hard earned cash for this Disneyland-esque experience. I’m not saying these resorts stink, in fact they are amazing on the right day (read: when people aren’t there, midweek non-holiday). It’s just that I will usually stay away because I’m too nervous about lining up with the hoards, and that is enough for me to exclude them from my list. Please note: almost any mountain can get slammed on the wrong day. Avoid skiing December 26-30th, MLK & Presidents weekends if you don’t want to mess with crowds. The mountains that made it onto my list are not immune - they can get somewhat crowded as well, just not as badly as the “marquee” mountains that are household names.
· Skiing should be a challenging adventure for all skill levels. To that end, I personally enjoy challenging terrain, large amounts of terrain for everyone’s skill level in my group, and an area’s ability to inspire awe. Awe, is of course, subjective. Bonus points for good tree skiing and views.
· While flashy ski infrastructure is nice, I consider it only a bonus. Gondolas/bubble lifts can certainly improve your ski experience by simply offering respite from the elements. But really, I’m not giving the lifts and lodges too much stock if the skiing is great.
· While not the highest priority, non-skiing amenities are important. Good food & comfortable, affordable accommodation can always make or break a trip. The weather isn’t always going to cooperate. Please feel free to borrow our family motto: “A terrible ski day makes for a great drinking day!” Nothing like a great ski bar. The more pinball, pool, & junk on the walls, the better.
With that in mind, here is dber08’s best skiing in New England, and I hope it incites endless fruitful discussion on this mostly pointless, privileged topic.
  1. Sugarloaf ME
Sugarloaf is big. Serious vertical, vast acreage, long drive. On a select few days each season, this mountain is as good as anywhere in North America. What can I say, there isn’t really anything like shooting off the summit of the Loaf, hitting the backside snowfields, ripping a steep groomer, and then finding some hidden tree stashes all in one 2800’ run. It has the best tree skiing in the east in my opinion (sorry Jay), and fabulous all-around terrain. Steepest groomers I can think of? Check. Old, narrow t-bar line bump runs? Check. FIS-certified downhill routes? Check. Top-to-bottom greens? Check. Cliff drops? Check. 2000’ sidecountry that feeds back into the resort? Check. Above tree-line skiing? Check. The compact base village has most things you could need, and there is cheap lodging in either direction down route 27 in Stratton or Kingfield. Due to its northerly location & exposure, and lofty 4200’ summit, it often gets snow & remains cold when other areas are getting rain or nothing at all. The wind can be an issue, but it’s worth the risk for when it all lines up. Come the end of March, this place is just sublime. It’s hard to describe, but this mountain just has a vibe, and it agrees with me! Others who are regulars will say the same. Plus, the drive keeps a ton of people away, although as Portland expands the crowds seem to be growing as well. Don’t worry, nothing like the Southern VT mountains! Up the road, the Coplin Dinner House is delicious, and the White Wolf Inn is cheap, funky, & clean (nothing more than that though). Standout runs: Timberline to Tote Road (with a bloody mary @ Bullwinkle’s halfway down), Misery Whip, Broccoli Garden, Rookie River, Double Bitter, Binder, Anything off of Spillway X-Cut, Backside Snowfields, and many, many more glades.
  1. Sugarbush VT
Sugarbush has terrain for everyone. No top-to-bottom greens, so a knock for that. I like being able to take everyone to the summit – it can really make someone’s day, especially a beginner. But for intermediates and experts, this place just rips. Huge vertical, consistent snow, great trees, great steeps, great lodges. The valley & town has something for everyone. Mt Ellen feels like a throwback compared to the more built-up Mt Lincoln, so you get the best of both worlds. This place, in combination with #5, remains one of the top skiing destinations in New England. Not nearly as crowded as its big-name neighbors to the north & south, Sugarbush is probably my favorite overall ski area in VT when you add everything up. There is ample affordable lodging in the Mad River Valley. Recently we stayed at the Yellow Farmhouse Inn, it was superb. Standout Runs: Top-to-bottoms on Mt Ellen, everything off Castlerock, Stein’s, guided side/backcountry
  1. Jay Peak VT
Jay Peak pretty much always has the best conditions around. That would be enough to get it on my list, but what brings it to #3 is its sweet, sweet terrain and usual lack of crowds. Cheap lodging abounds in this area. Trams are also cool…and it has one. So that’s a bonus. Not much else going on around Jay, but does it matter? I don’t really care about a waterpark, although someone else might I guess. They are 99% pee anyways. Standout runs: Green Beret/Valhalla, Vermonter, Timbuktu, guided back/sidecountry
  1. Cannon NH
Cannon has come to be one of my favorite ski areas in the region and just doesn’t get enough love outside of the NH diehards. Steeped in history and looming thousands of feet above the lower flatland to the north, Cannon marks the abrupt northerly start to Franconia Notch. This of course brings weather & wind so be prepared! Jagged peaks & rocky cliffs dot the landscape around the summit, making for a surreal ski experience. The mountain is consistently steep from top to bottom, and easy laps are possible when the tram is running. Tree skiing & sidecountry terrain abound…ask your new friends about it while you are crammed into the tram. Being state-owned, there aren’t many typical big resort amenities, but there is still a summit lodge & a great pub at the base. There is also some light fare available at the tram base, a lodge at the Mittersill base (Thanks FSC!) and Ernie’s Haus is now open to the public near Zoomer. Quite an assortment of day lodges for a no-frills, state-owned mountain! The surrounding towns of Littleton & Bethlehem are gems in their own right - please hit up Schilling in Littleton. One knock on Cannon is its inconsistent snow record, but its elevation & aspect hold snow well late in the season, causing the mountain to really shine in March. Another knock is its lack of beginnelower intermediate terrain…If you’re worried about that just go 20min down the road to #8. Standout Runs: Upper Cannon & Upper Ravine, Kinsman Glade (2000ft trees serviced by a tram, yes please!), Avalanche, Hardscrabble
Guide to Skiing Cannon: Unlike Sugarloaf, Cannon does have some tricks to ski it successfully. The excellent terrain at Cannon is located in 3 pods: Upper Mountain, Lakeside, and Mittersill. The central part of the mountain, serviced by the high speed quad, is simply a means to get to these other areas - this is not a chair you want to lap as the terrain is limited and gets scraped clean by those who don’t know better. Upper Cannon, serviced by the Cannonball Quad, is a chair I could lap all day. Glades, twisty groomers, views, bumps, you name it. There are a few top-bottom treats here, like Hardscrabble, that you can take down to the peabody lodge. The Lakeside pod, serviced by the Zoomer lift, has just amazing, consistent pitch, if not a little short. Either way, these are all great runs that you can lap all day. Mittersill is its own beast, especially the glades on looker’s right. Spend time here and explore, but don’t go out of bounds unless you are with someone who is very familiar with the terrain. I’m sure you saw the massive cliffs on your drive up and consequently know better.
When the tram is running, some of this advice can be tossed into the garbage, as you should just be doing tram laps until your legs are shaky.
  1. Mad River Glen
MRG is great for expert skiers, and it happens to be in a great snow-catching locale along the spine of the Green Mountains. The terrain is epic, and the mountain is skiing as it should be. The Mad River valley has a ton to offer. The combo of MRG with #2 is really difficult to beat. Crowds are almost a non-issue, although they are known to exist on occasion. One knock here is that MRG is just not for everyone…no snowmaking, not a ton of grooming, not a lot of amenities on the mountain. Doesn’t bother me…might bother those who stick to the groomers though! Standout Run: Paradise
  1. Saddleback
Rangeley is perpetually underrated, and Saddleback is on the rise. This place is bound to move up on the list, especially since it can be combined with #1 in a weekend. Saddleback has no crowds, a great snow record, excellent all around terrain, and a great small town. It’s actually hard to find fault here. It just reopened and we will be following along with its progress closely! I suppose it’s not quite as big as its neighbor in Carrabassett Valley, but I’m not sure it really matters when you get into this size bracket. Do yourself a favor and go to Saddleback! Standout Runs: Muleskinner & Cassablanca, America to Hudson Highway
  1. Smuggler’s Notch
Smuggs runs to the beat of its own drum, kind of like Cannon & MRG further up the list. While it is billed as a family resort, it has everything for everyone, including hairy expert terrain both on and off the map. It is also in a prime snow-collecting spot, just across the notch from VT’s highest peak. Smuggs is a classic example of ski infrastructure not really affecting everyone’s opinion of the place…old doubles are completely adequate when you have terrain & snow this great. Why would anyone go to Stowe when Smuggs exists??
  1. Bretton Woods
This one is probably a shocker based on my other picks and affinity towards expert terrain. Bretton Woods is not a challenging mountain; in fact it's probably one of the most beginner friendly mountains in New England. Maybe I’m getting old, but in this case it just doesn’t matter. The lack of crowds, great snow, excellent views, and swanky après scene all come together to make this a particularly unique destination. It’s easy to put the challenge aside when I can bomb a pristine groomer top to bottom, hop straight back on to the gondola, and see Mt Washington across the valley the whole time. Also, shhhh, don’t tell anyone, but there are some challenges to be found! Not on par with Cannon & Wildcat, but they are there…enough to keep me entertained for a couple days anyways. Something other than the skiing that sets BW apart is its associated hotel across the street. To enter the Mount Washington Hotel is to step back to a time of opulence and indulgence. There is no other hotel in ski country like it, east or west. Serious Shining vibes. Go grab a seat on the veranda and have a waiter serve you a classy beverage while you stare at the hotel’s namesake. The place feels like a fairy tale. Standout Runs: Rosebrook Glades, Deception Bowl, Sawyer’s Swoop for beginners
  1. Magic Mountain
Another mountain on the rise, this place is both funky & excellent. They are improving their uphill capacity with some refurbished lifts, which will be a great upgrade to the experience. But of course, the terrain is what excels at Magic. The tree skiing is great, and the narrow, old school New England trails are great. The close-by town of Londonderry is a VT classic. Not much to complain about here, other than the southern VT weather patterns and its size. When compared to the other southern VT resorts, this would be my pick to avoid the crowds & add some independent character.
  1. Wildcat circa 2019
Wildcat was once similar to Cannon: Stupendous views & magical location, quick 2000’ vertical laps, epic challenging terrain. Tucked away in Pinkham Notch, across the street from one of the most famous backcountry trailheads, Wildcat’s elevation & location ensure better-than-average conditions. The 2000’ foot base-to-summit detachable quad gives you enough vertical to burn out your legs, and accesses the premier top-to-bottom green run in the Northeast: Polecat. Unfortunately, as many readers know, it is but a shadow of its former self due to poor management. There are severe snowmaking, lift maintenance, and operating issues mostly stemming from lack of staffing. But, I'm keeping it a spot in the top ten, optimistically assuming that Vail turns this disaster around. It’s just too good to stay down, and nearby Jackson is just sooooo f*cking quaint. It’s a great combo. Standout Runs: Polecat, Feline & Hairball, assorted frozen riverbeds - ask a local to show you.
Honorable Mentions:
Not in New England but closeby & you should go:

2022.05.17 18:34 learn-by-flying Test Drive 2022 Expedition Timberline

I am hoping that someone may be able to assist in locating an Expedition Timberline for a test drive, I've been calling dealerships for a few days now and most individuals in sales which I get connected to are unable to provide any answers besides coming into the dealership.
TL/DR at bottom.
I understand this car is difficult to find on dealer lots, I also understand that a dealership is hesitant to let you test drive the vehicle when you have no intention or purchasing that specific vehicle.
I have a 09 Yukon XL 2500 with 157k, which I am considering three options for either replacement or sending it to paint/body for another 100k out of the vehicle.
What I am trying to accomplish is a test drive on a timberline to understand how the suspension, engine and overall drivability is compared to what I currently have and how it would compare to the Yukon XL AT4 with the 6.2l.
Now, I can almost guarantee the vehicle which I would test drive wouldn't be the purchased vehicle as the second ask would be to fully customize the order to include:
Questions:
It seems I almost need to make a road trip out of a Saturday and bounce from one dealer to the next but I am hoping that is not the case.
Thanks everyone for your insight.
TL/DR: Are their dealers in the Chicago area +2 hours of drive time who have a timberline which can be test driven? I am not planning on buying a car sitting on the lot but would rather order a customized Expedition.

2022.05.07 07:17 dread_mah_throwaway A complete list of every land (as of SNC) and if it sounds like vag, peen, taint, b-hole, the southern american states, or masturbation

/uj So, this is a really long list and it took a long time to make it. Long enough that I had time to reflect on what I was doing. It's rare for me to have this kind of quiet monotony these days. As I reflected I had several thoughts come up over and over again: how do i justify this? Is it weird that I'm thinking about naughty bits so much? Is this explainable? Does my sexuality inform this list too much? Why am I going to post this? These are hard questions and I turned away from them at first. But somewhere around 650~ I stopped and faced them. I think we all know how this started: "The shocklands all sound like slang for vagina". But that meme came and went. So why am I doing it now? Because I have a tendency towards comprehensivity which manifests as me taking jokes too far. Not offensively far, just beyond what stops being funny. This mild obsessiveness is probably what drew me to MtG with its huge lists of cards and mechanics to classify. But if that alone were the case I'd just collect special printings of tokens, decorate deckboxes, and post in the main sub. It's the combination of mild obsessiveness and humor that brings me here. The circlejerking subreddit feels like such a creative place. A place where you're given space to take jokes too far. circlejerking in general reminds me of the Skill/Will matrix. Specifically the High Skill / Low Will (or enthusiasm) section. People who know what something is about but don't actively participate in said thing. Celebrating expression using a Thing as a topic rather than celebrating a Thing. Do I regret wasting all this time? Yes but the sunk cost fallacy is a bitch.

2022.04.27 17:34 Pompeii_of_Ash06 Huge upgrades for my gecko

Hey everyone I have had my leopard gecko since December and he was a gift for my birthday so these last few months I’ve been trying to learn the most that I can for him.
Currently he doesn’t have the best enclosure, very open and paper towels and no background I feel awful for letting him live like that. But today I finally got my taxes back and plan to go out and get all the stuff he needs tonight. I’ve read the wikis so much and I want lots of opinions on what exactly I should get tonight.
I’m planning on making my own soil using the timberline soil and sand like said in the wiki.
What should I do for a background, one of the stick and peel type ones or some 3d or custom, his tank is a 55 gal I believe
I saw a post on here once of these temp hydrometers off Amazon that link to an app on the phone I thought I’d give that a try.
And lastly where do I buy like the tiles to put in his tank like lowes? What specifically should I be looking for?
TL:DR- what should I get my gecko for upgrades

2022.04.25 19:29 macado Insane quotes for 10-11 square roof in New England area?

Could someone give me a realistic idea of what I should expect for a roof replacement cost? I realize there are many different variables but I feel like the first 2 quotes I got were bananas. They were larger national companies that sent out sales people, not actual contractors/roofers. They both quoted around 18k. My impression is we were getting sold on some scare tactics. They wouldn't give me a breakdown cost of labor, materials , or plywood costs which is a red flag for me.
I was expecting to pay around 7k-9k USD based on my research. Is that unrealistic?
I'm located in New England (Massachusetts), our house was built in 1850, 1 chimney, 1 skylight that needs new flashing. There is a smaller section of lower plane roofing. The current roof is 1 layer of shingles (approximately 25 years old). It appears there is some wood rot near the chimney and I expect that plywood will have to be replaced.
The size estimate of our roof is 10-11 squares. I think we are looking at GAF Timberline or Certainteed Landmark shingles, ridge vent installation, ice dame protection, replacement chimney and skylight flashing, aluminum drip edge, and replacement of any rotting plywood as needed.
TL;DR - Current roof shingles crumbling/25 year old roof (1 layer), some wood rot around chimney but no major leaks in New England (Massachusetts). Happy to provide more information or if you have recommendations for roofing companies in New England area.

2022.03.07 10:20 MiChi36 Tyria map size and comparison of Expansion content

Tyria map size and comparison of Expansion content
With End of Dragons‘ launch we got Cantha as a new addition to the in game map, expanding it to a whole new level. It is fair to assume that Guild Wars 2 will not see any more new regions (at least not in the near future) and that this is the finalized open map.
The world in video games has always been very crucial for immersion and is (one of) the most important aspects for many players. That’s why one question often emerges; What is the size of this virtual World?
At least I ask myself that question and some games give enough information to calculate it. GW2 is one of these games (well, more or less, see later) and I tried my best to give a short summary of that I found out. This may be a long text, but I will add a tl;dr at the end.

1 General idea
First we need to check whether the world gives us information about any kind of units for measuring. While GW2 does not give units itself, there are distance numbers that can uniformly be interpreted as a “unit of length”. You can find them when looking at points of interest or waypoints when you are on a map but also with the range of skills. Ranger longbow skills, for example, have a range of 1500 while most melee attacks only hit enemies up to 130 units away. For the following analysis, in order to get a better feeling for the size, I assume these units are centimetres (sorry for NA, but inches would also work). There is no in game way to verify this (as far as I know, if there is please tell me) but in terms of dimensions centimetres make sense (an axe attack with 130 range means you can hit enemies up to 1.3 metres in front of you) so I will stick to it.

2 Finding a starting point
So the goal will be to find out the size of a map in in game units. For this we need a good starting point. I did the following:
I chose a map where I can measure a distance as big as possible to reduce the error of uncertainty. Important here is that both my character and the point I am measuring from are at the same height of the map, otherwise the projected distance from above will not be accurate. That’s why I chose a map with water, there we can assure that the level is the same. Southsun Cove seemed good, so I positioned my character in the bottom left corner of the map and looked at the distance to the Pride Point Waypoint in the top right corner of the map (for maximal range).
Distance shown as red arrow is 61146 units.

The game gives a distance of 61146cm (or 611m which seems about right considering how fast you can get there). The next step would be to be able to expand this measuring to more than just Southsun Cove. So I made a map of all of Tyria with in game screenshots (I will not post it, it’s too large). On this map, the distance between me and the waypoint was about 152px (GIMP Measure Tool used) and for the uncertainty I assume 2px (with a map with even higher resolution this could be way smaller but because the next steps are rather hard to do precise it is unnecessary).
This means 152 pixels correspond to 61146cm. This will give enough information as a starting point and lengths and areas can be measured across the map.

3 Getting the areas
The final step will be the calculation of areas on the map. For square shapes this will just be width * height. The error can be calculated with the Gaussian error propagation (which I will not go into here, just believe me). So we just need to get the lengths in pixels from the map graphic, convert them into real units (cm) and then calculate the area. I did this with all current maps in the game and once for the whole visible map. When giving the area of maps I tried to account for parts in the map that are not accessible (e.g. mountains in the first maps that have invisible walls around them). This is the biggest uncertainty and is hard to give exactly, but it works. Note that these numbers will only be the ones from the top view of the map, a map can have multiple levels of course (Tangled Depths).

With this data we can also compare the areas of the releases (HoT, PoF etc.) to see how much was added. The following diagram shows the volume of explorable areas with different releases:

Comparison of explorable areas of different contents.

Tl;dr
With the Southsun Cove map I got a in game distance which I can use to project it onto a full map of Tyria. I assumed the units to be centimetres. With this all the areas of the world can be calculated with an uncertainty and you can find them in the table above.

If you have questions, suggestions or adjustments please tell me! Hope you have a better feeling of the world of Tyria now! Have fun with all the content this game offers!

Hi everyone! I was hoping to poll for some help in choosing my first pellet grill. I love researching big purchases, and I've done more hours than I care to admit, including making a spreadsheet for comparison. However, I'm finding the different variables really difficult to compare and rank, making it a tough decision. Some info that will probably help in my specific situation:
1) I live in a cold climate in Canada. This affects both the need for double walled insulation, or a smoker jacket, as well as availability of the smoker in Canada, ease of getting it here, and cost of shipping. I assume this would also affect how easy it is to get parts, if ever needed.
2) We plan on building the smoker into an outdoor kitchen. For our setup, this will be best, even if not recommended in general.
The grills that seem to have taken the lead in my rankings are the Req Tec RT-700, the Traeger Timberline 1300, and the Grilla Silverbac Alpha (which we have put further down on the list recently). I considered the Yoder 640S but the cost in Canada with the accessories I would want was nearing $5000+15% tax on top of that. I just didn't think that it would be THAT much better compared to other names for significantly less money.
Some of the unique (to us) considerations specially for these grills I have considered:
1) Req Tec RT-700 - my wife hates the bull theme. I'm not keen on it either, but I can ignore that for the quality of the grill. They can ship it to the Canada border for free, but it would either be $1000 to freight forward it to my house, or about 10-12 hours driving (return) to go get it and bring it back myself. It's also not double walled, so the jacket would be necessary to use in the winter. Hoping I can use the jacket when built in. I also assumed I could put a cover on it which will hide the bull horns when not in use. Unfortunately, their custom cover goes to the ground and I'm not sure how/if I could modify it for built in use. Cost in Canada to my door (me picking it up) would be about $2000+tax.
2) Traeger 1300 - my wife really likes the look of this one. It's fully double walled which is nice in our cold climate. It only supports 1 probe. Seriously?! It's sold at a store 7 minutes from my house which means it should be easy to get any parts. Not sure how their support is, but I asked them about their warranty for built in units and they said it is void if built in. Not sure how they would ever know that or not. In the event of an issue we figured we could put the legs back on it and should be ok, but the risk is there. Cost to my house is about $3000+tax
It seems the general consensus from reviews is the quality of the Req Tec is really high, the value is excellent, and the customer support is second to none (hopefully this would also apply to me in Canada). However, I don't think anyone would say the Traeger Timberline is a bad grill either. $1000 for aesthetics is ok in our financial situation, so I hope that isn't the biggest driving factor in your advice.
Wow, this got super long. Thanks for reading my novel, I think this is reflective on the internal dilemma I'm having!
TL;DR ReqTec = Amazing grill, ugly design, headache to get to me OR Traeger = Attractive, slightly worse, more expensive, easy to find grill

Bobby Bizup was a ten-year old deaf boy when he mysteriously disappeared from Camp St. Malo (a Catholic boys camp). His remains were found a year later.
1958 - Disappearance
On the afternoon of August 15th Bobby was fishing in Cabin Creek with an ice cream carton full of worms. A counselor named Terry Cowan told Bobby that it was nearly time for dinner and that he’d need to gather up his things and return to camp.
Cowan said, “he nodded that he understood.”
Within an hour, that camp would notice that Bobby was missing.
After a dozen counselors failed to find Bobby, the director of the boys camp Reverend Richard Heister notified the parents and a US Forest Ranger station.
1959 - Remains Found
Bobby’s remains were found in July of 1959. Identification was made through scraps of clothing, bones, and the fragments of a child’s hearing aid.
The camp director Reverend Richard Heister said that three counselors found the remains “just below Timberline.”
2021 - Skull Found
According to the article Skull believed to belong to boy who disappeared from summer camp has been in possession of Colorado family federal investigators have obtained what they believe is the boy’s skull.
The skull was turned over to federal authorities by a Denver-area man named Doctor Tom McCloskey.
This Dr. McCloskey said that the skull
had originally been in the possession of his father, Dr. Joseph McCloskey – a prominent member of the Catholic Church and a close friend of the priest who was running Camp St. Malo when the boy vanished.
Tom McCloskey took possession of the skull in 1980 when his father died, saying that the only thing his father ever told him was that it may be the skull of a boy who disappeared from the camp.
The doctor contacted federal authorities after seeing the WBIR 9Wants to Know documentary “Mystery on Mount Meeker.”
Mystery
WBIR’s 9Wants to Know revealed that:
three of the counselors at the camp went on to sexually abuse children as priests, and that other witnesses and documents raised other questions about the sequence of events when Bobby went missing …
DNA testing on the skull is underway.
Questions
  1. What happened to Bobby Bizup?
  2. Do you think this is his skull?
