I travel extensively for work and stay primarily at Hilton properties to stack my points. I'm partial to Tru's and Hampton Inn's, and try and target newly built properties as most of us know Hilton is notorious for letting a lot of properties decay to the point you feel you're half a step above a Baymont.
I'm in Minneapolis on business and staying at a Garden Inn and this is hands down worst Garden Inn I've ever stayed at.
Breakfast is not sit down order, but buffet style and it's $14 for what is literally just the same food I've gotten at any normal hotel with a complimentary hot breakfast.
One of the elevators is broke, ice machine broke on my floor, room is okay, albeit a bit dated, no Diamond level parking, and I saw a dude at breakfast stumble in with 1/3 bottle of Hennessy.
I'm back next week and I'm def staying at the Hampton Inn next door. Looks like a newer property and a bit nicer actually.

AN: Happy Pride Month! This month I am focusing on LGBTQIA+ scripts, naturally. This is a new series! Grahven is my new Fella that spins in my head like a microwave meal, and I love him. (.) (Relieved) Right then. (To the guards) Don't worry, you lot. The prince will be safe with me. Dawl will tend to you until the prince is ready to meet his suitors.
(.) Dalin, my good dwarf, bring a platter out for the prince, yeah? And make sure you brew the tea before you chill it this time.

[Footsteps]
(.) Dalin? Yeah, he's a good friend. He and his brother, Dawl, helped build this place. They also made the gazebo. I tell you; those dwarves know a thing or two about adding a homey touch. They even put in a bench swing and hanging planters.
[Footsteps stop] We met in their village. I was there to buy materials and Dawl and Dalin were the only ones who would sell to me. The rest of the village either ran and hid or tried to attack me since… you know. Ogres aren’t exactly welcome in most places, on account of the tyrant and all that.
He may be gone now, but people haven’t forgotten. Thankfully, I’ve made a good reputation for myself here with the Inn. Of course, that’s thanks to the brothers and my patrons. Without them, I’d… well, I’d really have nothing.

Oh, I’ve been running this place for… hm, five odd years. It started out as just a garden stall. I’d sell fruit and flowers – mostly to the Butterfly Folk during migration. It was a safe place for them to camp, ‘specially with my protection. It was slow going at first, but once Dawl and Dalin came along people were keener to trust me. The garden got so popular with migrating Butterfly Folk we decided we ought to give them a proper place to stay, and the rest is history.

Here are all of the new US CHAdeMO (Leaf fast-charging) stations that rolled out in May 2023, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.
There were 124 "new" CHAdeMOs added in May. To put it in perspective, there were 112 CHAdeMO chargers added in April. I think the pace of CHAdeMO rollout has stabilized, while the pace of CCS rollout is still increasing. This makes sense given that only Nissan still makes a CHAdeMO car.
Some of these chargepoints will be "refreshes," e.g. the provider replaced them with faster chargers etc. Some may be incorrect. This report is only as good as the Alternative Fuels Data Center data.
We all know that CHAdeMO is a legacy format and will eventually go away, but clearly Nissan and their partners are continuing to support it for the time being. This shouldn't be surprising. After all, you can still buy a new Leaf.

There were 222 CCS charge points added or refreshed in May 2023, which is up from 171 in April. For comparison, there were only 74 new CCS charge points in May 2022. Things are speeding up.
"What about CCS charging at Tesla superchargers?" Tesla is in the process of rolling out their "magic dock" for non-Tesla cars, but so far in very few locations. If they start doing this at scale and reporting it to the Alternative Fuels Data Center then it will be reflected here.
"What about Ford vehicles with NACS (Tesla) plugs?" They are not on sale yet. Current-generation Ford vehicles have CCS plugs. The next generation will have NACS (Tesla) plugs, but will also support CCS via an adapter.

The atmosphere. It's just so colorful and... pleasant. I love the bright saturated colors and over the top bloom effects. Even with all the daedra stuff going on, it's just a wonderful world to lose yourself in. Yes, I know how cheesy it is. The NPCs are hilarious. I have come to LOVE the cheese.
I love that there are black and white cartoon villains and heroes, pure evil and absolute good. I am so DONE with the grimdark "morally grey" characters and worlds, I'm done. Over it. You know as a kid you love black and white cartoon villains and heroes, then you get into your teenage years and you love the edge, then into your 20s and you get cynical about the real world so you want to see shades of grey in your vidya games too cause "you're not a kid anymore." Now as a grown man in my 30s, seeing morally grey and grimdark stuff in the real world is more than enough for me. Give me knights in shining armor, give me the comfy daddy Imperial Legion Guards who will fight daedra to the death without question, with their bare hands if need be, never backing away from a fight for all that is good and moral. Reassuring the safety of every citizen with their presence. Just seeing a Legion Guard riding a horse in the night with a lit torch, man, it's just so damn comfy. You never have that level of comfiness in Morrowind or Skyrim. Sure they might not be realistic characters but seriously, it's time to say it, fuck realism in video games.
Give me that sweet Auriel's Ascension, jumping around Lake Rumare after punching a dozen mud crabs to death. Give me the beautiful sunsets, the trees swinging and rustling in the wind, running from a city to another because no I will never use fast travel Todd and I won't use horses because I need to level up that athletics.
I know all about the leveling problems, I know all of the game's shortcomings. I don't care. I created an Argonian male just for variety's sake, well ok also because the faces are all ugly anyway so why not be a silly lizard? Blade, Light Armor, Marksman, Restoration, Armorer, Athletics, Acrobatics. I'm level 7 now and just got done pwning the Dagon shrine. PTSD warning: I don't level efficiently at all :) and I'm fine with that.
Bored of Oblivion or role playing games in general? Want to have fun again? Roleplay the character. Immerse yourself. Don't optimize or min-max. Don't do everything and loot everything just because you can. Make it make sense in the game world. Yes, I am only playing the main quest and I'm playing as a virtuous cartoon hero. I love it. I am the Hero of Kvatch, but I'm humble about it, cause I just did the right thing, because I could and should do it. I pay to sleep in the inns, because no-one would wait 8 hours standing still just because "you don't need to do it in the game mechanics." The argonian is also a scholar so I gather all the books I can and read them in game, while sitting on a chair (in the game.) I won't even sell the Commentaries on the Mysterium Xarxes I just picked up from the shrine, instead I will take them to the Cloud Ruler Temple, cause the character wouldn't want those books circulating around, people might get some funny ideas joining the Mythic Dawn... I will buy a house next, Waterfront shack for now, cause it's a good location, I need space for all my stuff (I also make a lot of potions) and I can't afford anything more yet. I'll buy another house asap as The Waterfront is sketchy af, I don't trust my belongings being safe there in the long term. Maybe the house in Bruma later cause it seems comfy and it's close to the Cloud Ruler Temple... I won't stop and do most sidequests or join the guilds because realistically the character I'm playing as wouldn't do that, the crisis is more urgent, only exception is I will close any Oblivion Gate I come across immediately. I already have some ideas about more characters I will create... It's all so fun :D

Vengeance took many forms. Diroh hadn’t relied on pouting, sarcasm, or disobedience. Instead, she had made sure to drag everything of Dallion’s from the inn using air currents. Not only that, but she had made certain to spread out the items around her as widely as possible during their flight.
Dallion would have called the approach passive aggressive, had there been an ounce of pettiness emanating from the girl. Unfortunately, there didn’t seem to be any.
“The Academy isn’t a place for pranks,” he said. “The battlefield isn’t either.”
“Really?” Di asked with the most charming smile. “And where are you taking me first?”
“The Academy,” he said without hesitation. “Right after we finish something in Lanitol.”
“What’s so important there?”
“Politics.” He sighed. “I must congratulate the archduke on his victory.”
“But he lost.” Diroh flew in front of Dallion. “Countess Priscord kicked his butt.”
The phrasing suggested that she had spent some time with Spike.
“That’s not how he sees it.” There was no point in going down this topic. There was nothing Dallion could say that the fury didn’t already know. Unlike him, she was a born princess brought up by hunters. “What skills did they teach you?”
“Didn’t take you long to get to that.” The fury floated away. “Enough to take care of myself. Skye’s also picked up a few tricks. Do you want to see her turn into a sword?” Part of the cloud creature floated off the fury, taking on the form of a massive broadsword. “Or maybe a whip blade?”
On Dallion’s shoulder, Ruby flicked his wings menacingly. The intent was noticed by everyone, causing the cloud fox to move back to Diroh.
“It’ll help me know what to do.” Dallion allowed himself a smile. “And what to teach you if I can’t.”
“I know the basic four,” the fury said.
The basic skills were attack, guard, acrobatics, and athletics. There was nothing special about them individually, although having all four was nothing to be brushed away, especially since she hadn’t been awakened for long.
“And carving,” she added.
Internally, Dallion wanted to scream. That was the only skill that he lacked of the twelve, making it a sort of a sore point.
“What about magic?”
“Nothing new there. I can manipulate air and ice.”
“Just ice?”
“Technically water as well. I can use air to turn water into ice and then play with the ice, but not the other way around.”
That was a pity. Dallion could have had Harp teach her a thing or two about water manipulation otherwise. By the sound of it, the ice power was more of a natural oddity than trait magic. There was every possibility that Di would never be able to increase her magic level, but as with everything else, there always were exceptions. After all, Dallion wasn’t supposed to have learned magic either.
“What about trait ability? Echoes, splitting, and all that?”
“Vend tried to teach me splitting, but I’m bad at it. I could manage two or three for a few seconds, but it’s exhausting.”
Worse than a child, Dallion thought.
Now you see what it’s like for someone with predetermined limits, the armadil shield said. Sounds like her mind trait is capped. That’ll be a challenge if she were to become a mage.
“March taught me how to do a line strike, but told me not to use it too much.” The fury thought for a few moments longer. “That’s about it. I can mend and improve items, of course.”
“Good enough.” Dallion said, earning himself a displeased glare. “I meant good start,” he corrected himself. There was no denying that being stuck at the Academy had made him a bit antisocial.
“What about you?” she asked in turn. “What can you do?”
“Everything except carving.” Dallion put an end to the conversation. He had already spotted a few cloud bastions on the horizon. None of them were red, thankfully, but an increased patrol presence suggested that something was going on.
Casting a quick spell to enhance his perception, he focused on the distance. It turned out that there were four bastions in total. Each had several squads of furies, and also a few Academy mages. The green and cyan robes made it clear that this was more than a simple patrol. They were looking for something.
One of the bastions abruptly changed path, splitting off from the other three and moving in Dallion’s direction. He had been spotted.
“Di,” he said. “Move behind me.”
“What’s going on?” The fury looked in the direction he was staring.
“Guard clouds. They’re probably here to ensure the transition happens calmly,” he lied. “Keep your magic hidden,” he whispered. “And get Skye out of sight.”
“I thought that now that I was with you it wouldn’t be a problem.” As she spoke, the cloud fox shrunk to the size of a white marble.
“We’re not at the Academy yet.”
Dallion turned towards the cloud, making it clear he wasn’t avoiding them. Diroh followed. There was a sensation of tenseness coming from her, though no fear or eagerness. Hopefully that meant she wasn’t going to “greet” the cloud the same way she had greeted Dallion.
Gently, the two groups approached each other. When the distance became less than a thousand feet, the cloud stopped, remaining still, leaving Dallion and his companion to fly to them. Over three dozen fury mercenaries were visible—more than required for something this size. Sitting on the top on chairs of sea iron were a total of four mages. Three of them were the garden variety of battle mages that Dallion had gone on missions with. One of them looked vaguely familiar, though not to the point that Dallion could lead a conversation. The fourth mage was a few ranks higher. Although not part of the mage legion, she had the authority to order everyone except Dallion around.
“Academy mage,” he said with a slight nod, stopping five feet away from her.
“Battle apprentice.” The mage twisted her lips as she replied. “I wasn’t informed you had business here.”
“Nothing troubling, I assure you. I just wanted to make sure the province had returned to normal, and to find out a thing or two about Adzorg.”
“Ah, yes, he was banished to Nerosal, wasn’t he?” the woman said dismissively. “I hope it’ll help you catch him this time. And that is?”
“My novice.” Dallion looked her in the eyes. “I will present her to mage Katka.”
That was enough of a warning to make her back off. The other mages remained silent, patiently waiting for the pissing contest to end so they could get back to whatever they were doing.
“Is there anything I could assist you with?” Dallion offered.
“Assist me?” The cyan robed mage sounded outright insulted.
“I was a hunter in the area, so I know it quite well.”
“Ah, right. You didn’t receive your trait upon awakening. Thank you for the offer, but no. We can take care of the matter on our own.”
One of the battlemages shook his head, indicating it was better than Dallion stopped there. At the same time, he also discretely drew the magic symbol of binding so that only Dallion could see.
“I see,” Dallion nodded. They were chasing after someone, though not Adzorg. “We’re headed to Lanitol. If you’re headed in the same direction we—”
“Good day, apprentice,” the mage cut him short. With a snap of her fingers, she indicated to the furies operating the cloud that the conversation was over. The cloud slowly turned around, then flew off to join the remaining three.
“Charming,” Diroh said once the cloud bastion was several miles away.
“You’ll get used to it,” Dallin said. “Anyway, it doesn’t concern us.” Thankfully.
You’re thinking about it, the armadil shield said.
Thinking about what? Dallion asked mentally.
You’re thinking of going after whoever they’re chasing and taking Di along.
That was the last thing on his mind. Maybe if he were alone, things would be different, though even then it would be impractical. The main thing remained the vortex tower. Knowing that Adzorg was connected was just a bonus.
The rest of the flight was peacefully uneventful. On one occasion Dallion spotted a griffin nest in a patch of ruins, but chose to do nothing about it. He’d had enough of ruins for one day, besides it didn’t look like the creatures were causing anyone harm.
By late afternoon, the city of Lanitol became visible. Shining like a jewel in the wilderness, it made an effort to hide the scars the province had received. Dozen of layers of magic surrounded it like a bubble, adding to its glamor.
The city was a series of platforms stacked one over the other. Even from this distance, the Roman-styled buildings and statues were distinctly visible, creating an impression of grandeur. Last time Dallion had been here, he had entered the city from the ground level. Now, he intended to land directly on the top platform, as merited his position. It was also at this point that he regretted Di taking all his belongings along. That was going to become a topic of gossip for certain.
Ignoring any imperial bastions and city guard forts, Dallion flew on. He expected a mage to fly out and greet him before he got to the barrier enveloping the city. That happened Soon enough, but instead of the city mage, it was an apprentice who emerged through a portal in the air.
“Greetings, battle apprentice,” a young man said.
He appeared to be in his late teens. Starstruck and bushy-tailed, admiration emanated from him like a bell. Unlike the majority of locals, he was light-skinned, with short brown hair and a plain round face. The clothes he was wearing were far more expensive than a common mage apprentice should have, suggesting that he was related to one noble family or another.
“Let me welcome you to the provincial capital,” the boy said. His glance shifted from Dallion to the fury.
Someone hasn’t gone out much, the armadil shield commented.
“My novice,” Dallion said after several seconds of silence.
“Of course!” The apprentice straightened up in the air. “My mage and the archduke are expecting you. Please, follow me.”
The boy cast an eight-circle spell on a section of the barrier. The moment he did, an opening formed, allowing Dallion and Diroh to fly through. If Dallion had to guess, that was based on the local mage’s instruction. It would have been just as easy to cast a portal that would take them to the archduke’s main hall directly. Sadly, there were still those in the Academy that didn’t appreciate the latest reorganization changes. As far as they were concerned, Dallion was a no-good upstart. Of course, the only reason they could do so was because their position ensured that they’d never see war first hand.
“This won’t take long,” Dallion told Diroh, loud enough for the apprentice to hear. “Once we’re done, we’ll head straight for the Academy.”
The flight was painfully slow. Its purpose was to impress Dallion with the wealth and power of the archduke, which was precisely why it had the opposite effect. The strong pretended to be weak while the weak pretended to be strong. No one would say it openly, but Lanitol was the loser in the recent civil war. The only reason he had kept his province was because the former Countess Priscord had let him have it.
“Has there been any activity I should know about?” Dallion asked as a distraction from the boredom.
“Everything is always flawless in Lanitol,” the apprentice gave the rehearsed answer. “There will be a banquet in your honor. That might be considered new.”
“I don’t think we’ll be staying for that long.”
“But… but…” the apprentice stuttered. You must. The archduke has personally organized it and—”
“I’m sure we’ll come to some understanding,” Dallion said, using his music skills to calm the boy down. Making a scene before the first meeting was considered bad manners.
“Will it be like this everywhere you go?” Diroh whispered, more amused than anything else.
“Seems so.” Dallion sighed.

Our family is taking a trip in June, 2023, from Korea to Japan and staying multiple nights at Conrad and other Hilton properties. We have 4 nights (10 nights total, across 3 rooms) at the Conrad Seoul, 2 nights (4 nights, 2 connected rooms) at Hilton Osaka, 2 nights (4 nights, 2 rooms) at Hilton Garden Inn Kyoto, and finally 9 nights at Conrad Tokyo.
We're on our third day at the Conrad Seoul and I wanted to give my impressions, and if there's interest, I'll update in the comments.
Overall, I am very impressed with the hotel and the service at the Conrad Seoul. We had previously stayed at the Conrad LV and its sister property Crockfords, and while the Crockfords may have had a tiny bit more polish, the service was by far superior to anything we have received anywhere among the Hilton brands.
A case in point, we arrived severely jetlagged and exhausted beyond recent (and far, to be honest... not the most exhausted you've been, but close) memory due to the foolish (in retrospect) flight itinerary I had booked. We flew into Haneda at 4PM after a lengthy but uneventful flight from the US and had planned to see the sights in Tokyo before making a connecting flight to Incheon the following day (morning?) at 2AM. We had intended to soften the blow by taking a shower and relaxing at the Delta Sky Club (DSC) for a few hours after landing but due to a colossal brainfart on my part, exited the terminal before trying to look for the DSC. It shouldn't surprise anyone that the DSC is behind the immigration control, by the terminal.
4PM Japan being 3AM local time, the kids immediately fell asleep into light and fitful and ultimately unsatisfying sleep and that would come back to haunt us later. My wife and I then abandoned the plan to take the Keikyuu line to the city and tried to make the best of it in the airport. Long story short, everyone was extremely tired out.
We landed at Incheon around 5AM the following day and not having anything particularly to do (immigration line was fast), we took the subway to the Conrad Seoul, hoping against hope that they would show us mercy and let us check in at... 9:30AM. The reservation was booked through AmEx FHR and I'm a Diamond member but I wasn't sure if that would matter. But the staff who greeted us at the front desk immediately tries her best to help us. We had booked 3 rooms, 1 for us and 2 for the family who would be joining us. She gave us several options, even trying to find an upgrade for us, even though I stressed that my priority at that time was a room, any room, that would allow us to take a shower. She found an upgraded river-view room and apologized that it was on the lower floor (14). She said if we could wait an hour or so, a higher floor room can be arranged. No way. A room? Done!
She went through all the niceties and the benefits from the FHR and the Diamond status fast and gave us our keys. The luggage was delivered in a short order and we could finally relax. She (DM for name) even noted helpfully that the breakfast was still being served at the Executive Lounge and at the Zest (2nd floor) if we should be inclined to take advantage. No thank you, but kind of you to offer.
She also extended the Executive Lounge privileges to our kids (13 and 16), and everyone at the other 2 rooms. I was hoping for this but not really expecting. She also extended breakfast to everyone.
The room was a deluxe king. It had a day bed/sofa, and a large (looked larger than ours at home, but I didn't measure it or anything) king size bed. The bathroom was pretty roomy and had a bathtub and a glorious shower I'll go in some length to praise later. The toilet was a bidet and enclosed (which, in a puzzling trend, is increasingly not the norm). 2 vanity sink with a large, peripherally illuminated mirror closes out this intro.
For the shower... The temperature is controlled by a separate dial and it gets scalding hot. Don't tempt the hot water god. Gradually work your way up to your temperature. Sprayer want is mounted on a vertically sliding bar and is controlled for the intensity by its own dial. Lastly, there's a rainfall shower head above similarly controlled. Water pressure is extremely satisfying. And what's more, turning on the sprayer and the waterfall does not seem to reduce the water pressure to an appreciable degree, or reduce the temperature of the water. Other hotels put in shower systems with pulsing heads and lights and aroma and all that, but a good shower just requires water to the temperature of your liking and a LOT of it. That's it and the Conrad Seoul has it. I can't tell you how it felt to me luxuriating in that cascade of almost scalding hot water hitting me from above and the side. The bath robe was good, very absorbent, and not heavy at all. I could stay in it all day.
The service at the EL was impeccable. Afternoon tea was not anything special, just some pastries and drinks. The happy hour had more substantial offerings: buffalo wings, beef cutlets, braised salmon, grilled vegetables along with a complement of alcohol, including make it yourself cocktail. But above all, the view was spectacular. The windows run the entire length of the EL and you can take almost the entirety of the Han river (that you can see) from the lounge. The coffee service is automatic, but it brewed very satisfying latte and cappuccino.
El had breakfast and it was an abbreviated service compared to the breakfast buffet at the Zest. I'll talk more on that in the comments if there's an interest.
Now for the negatives... Our room was carpeted and running along the middle of the room, the carpet had detached and there was a noticeable hump. Not so high you could trip on it, but not necessarily what you expect in a luxury hotel. Our room did not have the signature Dyson hair dryer you expect at the Conrad. I know, the horrors. That's pretty much it. Being closer to the ground actually made the river view more intimate, although we missed the stage that was being set up for the music festival on the banks of the river from our relatively lower vantage point.
And now for something substantial. All the rooms on our reservations were kings and were upgraded to the river view kings. Which was fine, We had planned for our daughter to stay in a room with her cousin and for me to share the room with my brother. 2 in a room so the king was ideal. But with my kids being so tired and falling asleep at odd hours, and also, I remembered belatedly that my brother snored, that plan needed a change. So our whole family of 4 ended up staying in the same room. Not ideal for a king.
Talking to the front staff, they agreed to look for a twin room for us for that say and the remaining day, and it was arranged that we would pack our luggage and leave for the day around 3-4PM, and they would prep the new room and transfer the luggage while we were gone. It did not happen. Apparently, a hotel member stopped by at around 12:30, peeked in, noticed the luggage was not ready, and decided on his own that we did not want to move after all. Our 13 year old son was there but he did not ask him (although he doesn't speak Korean). So when we returned from a diner with an extended family around 9PM, we were still in the same room. Maybe in the grand scheme of things, a minor point but we had not fully recovered from our jet lag and the prospect of unpacking and packing again was not something I was relishing. In this trip, we tried to minimize the packing (see 9 straight days at one hotel) because I hate it. I hate lugging around luggage even more.
But in the larger sense, it speaks of a breakdown in communication and a failure to do a little extra (by reaching out to me) that could have prevented a service issue. I happen to think that running a hotel is 90% service (and 5% hot shower) so failing at the service would sour even the most luxurious facilities and amenities.
In the end, they upgraded us to a twin room at the Executive floor for the remaining stays so they recovered quite well (even though it took a little prompting... Conrad Seoul is notoriously stingy on next tier upgrade). We're not getting any extra benefit for being on the Executive floor because we have the EL access anyway but we now have the Dyson hairdryer! Our two other rooms at the 28th floor had it so maybe the lower floors don't have it...
Feel free to ask if there's anything you are curious about. We dined at the Zest evening buffet, ate at Atrio, and ordered a cake from the bakery in the lobby. I used the gym, toured the pool, and used the underground access to the subways and the malls extensively. I'll make a separate post for the Conrad Osaka and Conrad Tokyo.

This post is about a couple of older and elderly women who vanished without a trace. I wanted to include women who disappeared without much of an explanation. When elderly people go missing, their disappearances can often be chalked up to a dementia-related event. I believe many elderly people who vanished with their cars may be in the bottom of lakes and rivers. Those who lived near wilderness may have gotten lost and died of exposure. Those who were picked up or hitchhiked could've been brought to a hospital where they were unable to communicate their true identity. The women I included went missing under more suspicious circumstances.
Mayme Hart Johnson - Disappeared June 12th, 2000 from Nashville, Tennessee.
Mayme is the first on the list and the reason I decided to do this post. On June 12th, 2000, Mayme Hart Johnson, a local historian, researcher, and teacher went missing from Nashville, Tennessee. Mayme, who was 85, lived in the 100 block of Bosley Springs Road in West Nashville with her son, Sam, in his apartment. At 6:30 am that morning, her son woke to find his mother gone. While he reported that he wasn't initially concerned because Mayme occasionally left the apartment around that time, he became alarmed when she didn't return by lunchtime. Where Mayme would go/what she would do at that time is not known. Richland Creek is close by to the apartments, but from what I've seen, it's narrow and a body would probably soon be found if it was in there, despite it being 28 miles long. Of course, there is always a chance she made it into a larger body of water that concealed her. A maintenance man from the Johnson's building told authorities that he had seen Mayme at 6:30 am the day she went missing. This was around the time Sam woke up. Whether this employee saw her outside the building, inside the building, near or on her apartment floor, or down the street is not mentioned. At the time of her disappearance Mayme was 5'5, 120 pounds, with brown eyes and gray hair, and last seen wearing pink pants and a pink blouse. Whether these were pajamas or not (possibly indicating a dementia-like episode, where she got up out of the house and left without telling her son or getting dressed) is, like many things in this case, unknown. Mayme, as I mentioned, was a historian and if you google her name you will find a few sites that show her body of work. In 1986, she published "A Treasury of Tennessee Churches". A search for Mayme was conducted in the Nashville area and extended to Huntingdon, TN, where her husband's grave was, and where she had been visiting the weekend before she vanished. There was also an aerial search of Eastern Maury County that took place in July 2000 after law enforcement came up with a theory that she could be a target of the I-65 rapist. I'm not sure where police got this idea from. The I-65/Days Inn Killer, now identified as Harry Edward Greenwell, murdered three hotel clerks (ages 21, 24, 34) in the late 1980s. He also sexually assaulted a 21 year old hotel clerk in 1990. While LE does believe he's connected to more violent crimes, I'm not sure how they link Mayme to him--if you know, please add your knowledge in the comments. After the aerial search, nothing was found linking anything to Mayme. In 2008 she was declared deceased.

Helen Joyce Rawley - disappeared June 4th, 2003 from College Park, Maryland
Helen Joyce Rawley lived in a bungalow on the 4600 block of Knox Road in College Park, Maryland with her son. 75 year old Helen went by her middle name "Joyce" so that is how I'll refer to her. Seventy-five year old Joyce and her son, Tom, had lived together since the death of Joyce's husband of 48 years, Nelson, in 2001. Between 6:45 and 7:00 am on June 4th, 2003, Joyce was last seen by her tenant, a man who had rented a room at the Rawley home for the last eight years. Joyce was seen by him on her porch that morning as he returned home from work. Beginning the day after her husband died in February 2001, Joyce suffered two strokes four days apart. Because of the strokes, she was unable to talk and considered disabled because of her inability to communicate. In 2002, Joyce underwent chemotherapy and radiation for rectal cancer. She was on medication that made her tired and weak. She didn't go out anywhere by herself except to get the mail. Her mind remained "sound", according to her son. The day she went missing, her son returned home from his foreman job at 3:30 pm, and found the house empty with the lights off. Joyce's purse and wallet remained left behind in her bedroom, everything was in place, and there were no signs of a robbery. Police tracked Joyce's scent out the front door which she never used, and to the corner of the block. However, she went missing on a "rain-soaked" and "dreary" day and it's possible the bad weather could've washed away any more of her scent outside. Since the death of her husband who died unexpectedly in his sleep, and her two other sons who died together in a 1982 boating accident, Joyce's immediate family consisted of her remaining child Tom, who was unmarried and childless at the time of his mother's disappearance. If she had other family out of the area is unknown. She does have a beach house in Annapolis, Maryland, but had not visited there after she went missing. She was 75 when she disappeared, standing between 5'4-5'5 and 110 pounds. Due to her cancer, she wore a colostomy bag and was on several medications that she can't go long without. Fliers with Joyce's information went out, woods were searched, local bus drivers were notified and questioned if they had seen her, and hospitals had been checked. A helicopter flew over the city at night with a heat-detecting device. No sight of her was ever found. She had brown eyes and white hair and was last seen in a sweatshirt and slacks. She enjoys gardening, crossword puzzles, and reading. Police don't suspect foul play and Tom isn't considered a suspect (neither is the tenant who was the last to see her), but they aren't sure what could've happened.

Maebell Dawson - disappeared January 3rd, 1998 from Jefferson Township, Ohio
68 year old Maebell Dawson had lived in a one bedroom apartment on the 2nd floor of the Martin Luther Manor Living Center on Liscum Drive for about a year when she went missing. Maebell was divorced, had two daughters, and had retired from a hospital housekeeping job two years prior. Maebell was close to her family, and when calls to reach her went unanswered for two days, by January 5th, her residence was checked. Nothing in the second-story apartment was missing or out of place. Her winter coat was draped over a chair, her wallet, credit cards, cash, and a check for rent dated 1/8/98 were all found in her purse on the table. Her bank account was never accessed again. There were no signs of forced entry, a struggle or robbery inside the apartment. LE does not believe Maebell was attacked from her apartment or lured from the premises, but they do believe foul play was involved. According to CharleyProject, suicide "has not been ruled out but has been deemed unlikely". In 1998, Maebell was between 5'4 - 5'6 and 180 pounds. She had brown eyes and gray hair, wore glasses, and was last seen in a tan jogging suit. She was last seen entering her apartment at 9:30 pm on January 3rd. Five and a half years after her disappearance, Maebell was declared legally dead.

Norma Mae Maynard - disappeared February 3rd, 1979 from Boone, Iowa.
Norma Mae Maynard went missing in early February of 1979, just two weeks after the unexpected death of her husband, Carl, on January 19th. Norma and Carl had been married for three decades and Norma was deeply grieving the loss. Norma lived with her 30 year old son, and he was the last to see his mother. He stated that shortly before noon on February 2nd, he found a note from his 61 year old mother that stated she was on her way to Los Angeles, not to look for her, and that she'd get in touch again someday. The validity of this note (if seen by LE, if handwritten analysis was performed, etc) is not known. Norma's purse and a few items of clothing were missing, but her checkbook and jewelry were left behind. There was no sign of a break-in at the house. Her husband's pension which she lived off of and her bank account with savings was not touched. Norma was a shy woman who spent most of her time at home and had a regular routine. She didn't drive and her brothers stated that she had never been more than a few miles from her hometown. Her husband's funeral bill was paid for by a check dated four days after she vanished and signed by "Mrs. Carl Maynard". According to Charley Project, "The signature appeared to match Maynard's handwriting, and her son said she had signed a blank check and left it with him to fill in and pay the bill". The validity of this is not known either. A sighting of a woman matching Norma's description was seen by a local Greyhound bus station employee. The woman was boarding a bus bound for Los Angeles. Police are not sure of the accuracy of this sighting and consider it "shaky". Norma didn't drive but she didn't normally travel by bus, and why she allegedly went to Los Angeles is unknown: she had no friends or family there. Norma's son was not considered a suspect in her case, though some members of her family believe he was involved in her disappearance. He has maintained his innocence and has since moved out of state. Norma was 5'3 tall and weight 175 pounds, with blue eyes and gray hair. If she was alive today, she'd be 105. I believe someone close to her knows what happened and made up the story about her leaving for California. My second theory would be suicide, and she made up the California story so her family wouldn't worry.

Yu Chin Goodson - disappeared March 25th, 2005 from Russellville, Franklin County, Alabama.
Yu Chin Goodson is one of the youngest on my list, and at 57, I wouldn't classify her as elderly, but she is an older woman with a lot of mental and physical issues, who went missing under mysterious circumstances like these other women. Yu Chin is an Asian woman suffering from paranoid schizophrenia, diabetes, and a heart problem which required daily medication. In 2005, she was living in group home for patients with mental disabilities in Russellville, Alabama. On March 25th, 2005, a witness claimed to see Yu Chin enter a small, older grey or silver car with a loud muffler. The car was headed toward the Decatur, Alabama area, which is where her son lives. Staff at the group home were informed that Yu Chin was gone, and within 15 minutes of her disappearance, the police were notified and a search for Yu Chin began. No trace of her was ever found. Her son, who lives in the Decatur area, was never contacted by his mother. There has been no mention of foul play, and authorities believe she could currently be homeless and living in shelters. At the time of this write up, she has been missing for almost twenty years and would be around 75 if still alive.

Barbara B. Blount - disappeared May 2nd, 2008 from Holden, Louisiana
Barbara B. Blount was a 58 year old widow who lived on the same road as her children, kept in regular contact with her family and friends, and was active in her local church. It came as a surprise one morning when her nephew came over to visit her residence in rural Livingston Parish, Louisiana, and Barbara was nowhere to be found. A neighbor had just spoken to her over the phone, and Barbara had said she was cleaning out her kitchen cabinets. By the time her nephew had arrived for a visit, the front door was wide open, Barbara's phone was lying on the floor with the battery pulled out, her car was gone, and Barbara was missing. Besides for the unusual circumstances in the home, police didn't find any proof of forced entry. A few hours later in the late afternoon, the silver four door 2006 Toyota Camry Barbara owned was found a quarter of a mile from her home. It was found 25-30 yards off the main road and out of sight, hidden by trees. No trace of Barbara was discovered, baffling friends and family who described Barbara as a cautious individual who carried a gun when she went outside to milk the cows and didn't open the door to strangers. Waterways and woods were searched in attempt to find Barbara, but nothing was ever found.

Hello! I live in Zones 5b (Portland, Maine). I have a couple of garden beds and thus far my rainbow chard starts keep getting eaten. The other starts in the vicinity are kale and collards, but they aren’t getting touched. I bought new starts to replant but am realizing 1) do I need to set a trap? 2) I prob have to plant them elsewhere to test if the critter moves farther.
Any idea what it could be? A skunk may be living under the house :/ as well as some chipmunks. But to me it’s odd that it’s only the rainbow chard! Thank you!

I’ve got a few hair and beard mods installed and went into creation kit to edit him to my liking, but after I save my changes and load the game he still looks like this. Any advice? The changes loaded once, and then I went back into CK to remove a moustache from Brand-Shei, and Bryn is back rocking the look of my ex-boyfriend’s dad.

Hello fellow shifters!
I hope this success story motivates you all and helps bring about great success in your own future experiences. Feel free to read the things you want to read first, no need to read in order. This was the first time that I shifted to a reality and then had unusual experiences upon returning. At least unusual compared to the usual normal for me ranging from food tasting so much better to new habits that stayed with me after leaving my DR. I scripted that would be the case, but never before has it truly been. Keep reading for the method and some notable moments in my DR, and then those unusual moments that followed.

By the way, I've been taking a lot of time to edit this all together as I'm copy and pasting previous comments and posts and my notes because I followed a method but didn't put everything in one place. I'll likely make some edits to fix any confusion following the post.

First off, a new method for you guys that I used successfully for this shift:
Instead of falling asleep like some methods require, I "create" a pocket dimension that I can jump to once I'm done scripting and visualizing the scripts taking place in that reality. Here's the the method I followed for the success I experienced, in a way that you can read and follow it too.
1. Relax and center yourself by breathing deeply and visualizing your energy, your essence all of your energy.
2. Next, visualize you're outside your energy, but that you're not your energy, you're just watching it.
There's quite a few ways I've learned to do this, to separate your consciousness from your body ranging from seeing yourself outside your body; to visualizing you're outside this universe watching yourself in 3rd person on a screen and there being a lot of other screens which are other possible realities; to the technique in my post.
3. Visualize you're in a void of sorts, you're outside this universe in a place where all universes are visible.
4. Next, visualize an egg. And in that egg is another reality that you can script however you desire with intentions or visualizing what you script.
5. Visualize your DR is on a movie screen that you are editing and rewriting how it plays out with you scripts and visualizing them all taking place in that reality within the movie screen.
I visualized the script taking place in my desired reality instead of in the egg. Later I basically copied the reality in the movie screen to the egg. This step is optional, but it makes it easier to visualize personally and may help you too.
5. Script what would happen once you get back.
For me, I visualized a second movie screen and every time I visualized the script taking place, I saw the moment I left the DR and went "back" to my CR. However, technically the CR you return to should be a slightly different reality upon arrival, at the very least least in the sense that in the CR you arrive back, you brain contains vivid memories. For example, I scripted my habits and such were to change and match what they came to be in my DR.
6. Visualize the movie screen that held my DR now exists in the egg, visible in an egg shape. Visualize that it is literally a gateway to and from that reality.
7. Finish up your scripts, and visualize the scripts taking place in your desired reality, within the egg/movie (whichever is easier, but knowing they are both the exact same reality.)
For me it took 1-3 hours of scripting and visualizing, but afterwards, I visualized the shift from my CR to my DR, every second scripted to be 10 years.
8. Set the time constraint such as anything from no time here passing, to one second being any number of years.
The first few times I shifted to a Pocket Dimension, I scripted no time would pass but immediately I would have memories from the time in the DR. In this Skyrim DR, I scripted every 1 second that passed here, 10 years would pass there. Ten seconds came and went quickly, and memories flooded my mind of my time there. I've spent at least 5-10 hours the past few days remembering my 100 years there, and there's a vast amount I've yet to take the time to revisit. While remembering the time, it truly feels like remembering moments in my life from the past.
9. Visualize your consciousness entering your DR. There's no need to sleep or for your body to be asleep.
Upon taking enough time to visualize and script to the point you know it will work, and you've seen moments in your visualization of you in you DR, time will pass as you intend for it to and your memories should come flooding back, even if you have to take time to remember them.
10. Take the time to remember your moments in your DR.
It may feel like the creative side of your brain is just making stuff up at first, but the moments it may feel as if it's making up feel real and seem like true memories. That's because they are real, did exist in that reality, and are true memories.

I lived 100 years and those 10 seconds went by fast it seemed but I have vivid memories from the last 100 years while in this DR.
And so too can you do this too, and I hope by performing what I describe to you you have the same amount of success as myself.
​
Now to the experiences:
Most know the "Hey you, you're finally awake" scene of Skyrim, and I scripted everything would play out like normal Skyrim besides the other scripts listed in the comments below.

• I came into the world beginning with hunting to make money. I would hunt deer and occasionally (and increasingly successfully) shoot them in the head or heart and would skin them, bag their leather and meat and sell what I didn't use for crafting and cooking.
• I ate a lot of Venison and bulked up, got big and muscular and made bigger and better armor to go with it. Heavy armor like iron was too much at first, but eventually was able to wear Ebony armor, and then Daedric near my last 30 years or so there.
• Scripted Bandoliers existed, and bought and learned how to make them from Adriana who I called Avenicci at the Forge in Whiterun, who agreed to a deal where she'd teach me how to blacksmith/leatherwork in exchange for materials. I learned how to make my own clothes, armor, weapons, and tools from her.
• Became leader of each of the guilds after scripting I would: Thieves Guild, Companions, Dark Brotherhood, Bards College, College of Winterhold.
• Scripted my spiritual teacher from another DR would be a teacher at the College of Winterhold. I spent countless years studying with him, learning from him, reading books from other realities, and the last place I visited before coming back was his classroom.
• I remember getting shot through the jaw with an arrow, it was the most excruciating pain I've ever experienced, by remembering in this CR I felt pain and tightness in my jaw. I drank a health potion mixed with blood gushing down my throat, ran towards the bandit so he could kill me and got stabbed in the neck. Woke up as scripted in the nearest Inn, with no damage and all my stuff.
• I had a wife, some of us know the woman in Riften, part of the thieves guild, Saphire. Well in this DR, she was an amazing person under the cold persona she displays in the game. I called her Saph after we started dating.
  • She would always call me Hon and I'd either call her Saph or honey. I met her in Riften and after getting to know the real her, I fell in love and she fell in love too. We got married when I was 29 and she was 32. We met when I was 20 and she was 23, and started dating when I was 25 and she was 28. I'm not 100% on those ages, but it's a rough estimate because it was almost 100 years ago for me in terms of memory.
  • She turned 40 and mentioned I haven't aged a day since I was 35. She asked me why, and I told her along the lines of "I've been wanting to tell you this for the longest time, but I've never been sure how. I feel it's about time" she asked if I was gay and if I had some magic anti aging from a secret lover in the College of Winterhold lmao since I would visit there a lot.
  • I told her no and ended up easing into telling her I'm from another universe but that she is real and exists in this universe and isn't just an NPC. Of course she asked, "NPC?" And, to skip some dialogue, I told her that she was a person and wasn't just a character in a game. She took it surprisingly well, like way better than I expected and told me this:
  • When she was 40 and I was mentally 37 but physically 35 Saph told me to script her as a younger age but with all her memories that she had at the time I left this universe.
  • We adopted two kids Hroar in Riften and Lucia in Whiterun and our first house together was Breezehome. I worked on Lakeview Manor, building everything by hand as scripted that I would have to (scripted no menus), and eventually built the main hall, a kitchen, children bedrooms, and a library/watchtower in the back by hand with help from Marcurio and Lydia after Marcurio died, and some help from Saph for gathering resources. I became Thane of Falkreath and got help from the House Carl there too, and made her my Steward.
• Before leaving to go back to this CR, after being there for 100 years, I visited my spiritual teacher. He showed me a mirror, and seeing myself for the first time in a long time besides in reflections in water, I was ripped and huge. He said I should take off my clothes and he'll look away, and I looked like Arnold Schwarzenegger but more tan and with a 35 yr old version of my face.

I scripted when I came back I'd take with me my DR's subconscious and consciousness 100% and I've noticed many unusual occurrences (unusual for me in this CR at least) upon arrival back here to this CR: - I had the strongest urge to brush my teeth with my electric toothbrush I've ever had - I enjoyed brushing my teeth so much as if I just hit a really good joint (I haven't smoked in almost 2 months tho so drugs aren't the cause). The euphoria was unreal - I seemingly manifested an opportunity to garden for my family even tho I've always hated gardening and they know that. I loved every moment of it and I was getting flashback type memories seeing myself working on my farm in Skyrim, vividly seeing my leather clothes and my surroundings while looking down at my regular jeans, gardening - I never have let myself garden in this CR to the point of sweating, I just hated it that much, but I was sweating beads down my face and on my lip and didn't go for a water break once like I used to do every few minutes before I would just go in the AC for a while - Before going to bed last night upon writing this, I had a memory of me doing 10 pushups every time before I'd sleep. I wasn't gonna do it because I was too tired, but I couldn't resist the memories just kept playing in my hand, and dropped down next to my bed and did 10 pushups, and that was the fastest I've fallen asleep in maybe over a year in this CR. I still remember how easily I'd fall asleep in Skyrim even though it's counterintuitive because you'd expect the blood pumping would keep me awake - The evening of coming back here, I sat outside for 1-3 hours enjoying the dusk and then the night. I NEVER sit outside for more than a few minutes, I've always hated the bugs and the heat outside. I'm sitting outside and have been for over an hour writing this 2 days later. Yesterday I spent a few hours just enjoying the night sky and the peacefulness outside. Each time I spend time outside past few days I remember and reminisce over the good times and the memories of sitting on my porch outside in Skyrim (I'm sweating and completely unusually for me, I don't mind one bit) - When I got back I showered and it was about just as euphoric as brushing my teeth was. I felt so much gratitude to have a fast stream of hot water and to not have to bathe under a waterfall or in a (heated) bath as I have many memories of doing both of, it was amazing and serene to wash myself with soap - I always use a scrubber when I shower in this CR but counterintuitively I used my hands for the first time in over a year. I don't know why, but it may have been to fully feel myself clean myself, not too sure about this one. Definitely scripting soap in next time, I used scents I made that were basically soap but I didn't have true soaps of any kind - also upon arrival back I went and walked on the grass barefoot in my backyard yard, which I never did because I hated the idea of bugs crawling on me. After sitting on a stump my bare feet on the grass, an ant crawled on my food and I didn't even kill it. I just brushed it off even though I always would kill them. It didn't even bother me one bit; I felt so at peace, calm, and still. - Unlike most of my memories, I can remember entire conversations for the most part in my DR even ones from 80+ years ago. But then there's still some things that are faded and I have to focus and try harder to remember if I can manage to. - I always bring a lot of stuff with me between my family's house and my place, at the very least a phone cord. But I packed lightly without thinking, bringing only my keys, wallet, phone, and earbuds. I later realized it was unusual for me and remembered what I learned in Skyrim, to pack lightly only the most important things. I always used to bring a cord at the least even though there's one over there, no clue why. - normal things feel nostalgic, like the taste of yogurt I used to eat every day and the smell of my house even - washing dishes is a piece of cake, it used to be something I put off or dreaded a bit, and now it's easy, I remember all the years I would wash dishes in the Inn before I bought it and in my houses - I'm realizing now that food tastes so much better as if I'm high on weed. At least processed foods like yogurt and granola bars so far, but it's very noticeable and it makes sense though. If you were to go 100 years without eating anything processed and you try it again and your body doesn't reject it, the amount of sugar and sweeteners and random other tasty junk is most likely going to taste a lot better than eating vegetables and meat and non pasteurized dairy for all those years. - I no longer feel the need I was unaware of before to have almost constant distraction. No matter what I used to be doing, I was either on a device or doing something like reading or working out. The only time I used to just think is in the shower or accidentally while meditating. I'm realizing that all changed since I came back. - The time I've been spending outside, at least 6 hours the past 2-3 days of writing this, most of it I'm not on my phone but instead just thinking, and I feel peace while thinking unlike normally. Even when not outside I've spent hours inside just thinking and looking back and remembering my lifetime in Skyrim - I've realized not everything needs a (long) response. However, unlike the times I've been more quiet in the past it's not because I don't have the energy to talk. For example, when my family was telling me what they needed done outside, my responses were either silence but eye contact and nodding or 1-3 word responses. I believe it's because previously I would fill the air with words because I was uncomfortable with silence - upon coming back I'm a lot more honest/blunt as in I don't feel a need to sugar coat my answer if I'm asked a question. - I have more confidence to share my experiences but I have a newfound skill of articulating them without sounding crazy (so far). For example, after debating on telling a member of my family (who didn't know about reality shifting and was skeptical) about shifting to another reality for 100 years, I warmed up to it. For the first part of it she was worried about me, understandably because she's a psychologist. Unexpectedly, she shared her own spiritual experiences, of which I didn't know she had any including her memories of a past life as a little boy and she's known how to sail her whole life because of those memories. She and I both agreed that shifting is closely related to other spiritual things like intuition and past lives in the sense that science can't explain them yet but they still exist. This was also after telling her that I spent 100 years in another reality, but I didn't get to the part where it was a reality where the events of Skyrim take place and exist. But I did tell her almost everything else including I had a wife and 2 kids. - In this CR, a girl I hadn't spoken to in years drove by as I was picking up some leftover branches from earlier's gardening outside the day before writing this. That was the first time in my life I talked to a woman smoothly without stuttering, got her phone number and her Instagram, and talked to her in my regular deeper voice instead of raising it higher pitch accidentally at all like I talk to my mom or when I'm really excited or when I'm flirting with a girl (in the past).
I told that member of my family, and she suggested it was possibly because my years as a married man before I said it myself. I was hoping she'd say something like that because I was thinking it had to do with my experience in this DR, so it's cool she felt so too.

It was indeed quite surprising to see noticeable changes in who I am: my habits, thoughts, mindset, and speech. I know that was the plan and that I scripted it to be so, but to see it happen still brings about a new question: how much can these aftereffects be influenced and how much of a positive change can each of us make in ourselves with scripts for what happens when we come back.
​
Anyway, I hope this is of help in inspiration and motivation for many of you out there, and that my experiences and method make a profound impact in even just one of you guy's lives.

IDK If I'll do so again, but for just this once, follow this first-timer's unjaded eyes through their breathless, awe-stricken, confused sprint across the last ninety pages of this book. Without further ado...

Epigraph

An excerpt from Faces of Darujhistan written by Maskral Jemre. The gods of Darujhistan and their faces will play extensive roles symbolically throughout the impending climax. It briefly describes the ceremonies we'll see in passing through various characters, and there's something haunting about receiving a glimpse of how the festivities ought to go and what it is that they mean.
Also, if this is the passing of winter to spring, where is Gennebakis, exactly? If the top of the continent is tundra, then Darujhistan would be much further south, (which we know) so somewhere similar to North America? Is Darujhistan in Texas?

Chapter 20

The chapter that broke me, one near unbearable buildup of pressure before the dam breaks. Here, it all begins to unfold.

Epigraph

An excerpt of T'Matha's Children by Heboric. It mentions the "the matron's//blood like ice" This feels like an allusion to the goddess of Darkness, with the Tiste Andii being cold, and all. Beyond that, it "brought light into dark and dark into light" so given the alleged history between Light and Dark, that works. Was this perhaps the creation of the Warren of Shadow? In which case, the "children of chaos" would be... the Hounds? Who knows!

The Chapter Itself

Murillio is off to confront Kruppe, musing on the turning of the Cycle of the Age. The Year of the Five Tusks, which we've been constantly reminded it is, is now giving way to the Year of the Moon's Tears. The names bear significance according to the Seers, with the god Tennerock's tusks, Hate, Love, Laughter, War, and Tears, signifying the nature of the coming Years. The device was a gift by some guy named Icarium, whom Mammot believes to be of Jaghut blood. Evidently, the Jaghut were skilled in mechanical prowess and possibly gifted enough to predict a thousand years ahead. Moon's Spawn has arrived, after all.
He collides with Kruppe, who drops a series of masks. The rotund mage informs his dear friend that his other ear friend, Lady Simtal, has invited him to attend the Fête. That they've never met is ironic, but irrelevant to Magnanimous Kruppe, friend to all. This whole interaction is fantastic, with Kruppe dropping many distractions, such as his mentioning five strangers without naming the fourth, or a series of cantrips, while Murillio dodges them as best he can. He confronts Kruppe point blank about being Lady Simtal disguised the Eel. Kruppe sighs, and modifies the courtier's memory, buying himself free reign for the night.
As Baruk waits for the Eel, he discusses attending the fête with Anomander Rake, who as elected to attend as the High Alchemist's +1. Many members of the Council and the T'orrud Cabal will be in attendance, and Rake wants an opportunity to meet/observe his allies. It'll also put him in the epicenter of the most likely place of Convergence on Genabakis. Rake learns of the new year's title, and correctly guesses Icarium's involvement, as he's evidently produced similar wheels elsewhere. This has quite a few implications, given that this person is evidently traveling with at least one god. They receive news that the Eel will reveal himself to them that night, (although Baruk as much as gives away that he's guessed the truth) as well as Mammot's recovery. The High Preist of D'Riss was able to get away with minimal difficulty and casually mentions that he's aware of the drama surrounding the Coin Bearer. He is also a member of the T'orrud Babal. Rake, asks whether Mammot will be attending the Fête, and then leaves abruptly. If only Baruk had read further into the odd departure.
Adjunct Lorn finally arrives at Worry Gate, witnessing the ritual mentioned in the Book's opening epigraph and being briefly noted by a guard. That guard is Circle Breaker, watching for the Adjunct for the Eel. Once done, he manages to trade a shift to be at the Fête himself. Interestingly, he tells the guard next to him his name, which we do not ever get to know (at least not in GotM)
Lorn enters a bar, and stumbles upon the Bridgeburners. Fiddler is running one of his games, which we get to see more fully here. The game is played with a Deck and depicts the scene in the Gadrobi Hills where Paran met Rake. Tattersail did believe the Sapper to be a Tallent, after all. The game ends predicting Lorn's death, this reading is affirmed by the orb. Whiskeyjack arrives and catches up Lorn with a modified version of events, including their loss of Sorry. Lorn comes to the realization that this man had debated tactics with Dassem Ultor, so there's not much she can do to break him. She asks the name of the estate and announces she will return in two hours, without dropping anything off.
Crokus and Apsalar watch the revelry escalate down below them. They discuss their plans for the evening, the thief growing ever more conflicted about his feelings. Apsalar mentions something within her holding her sanity together. It seems Rigga remains at work. Serrat, meanwhile, creeps up the steps below, comically over-warded and utilizing an abundance of caution. She's immediately thwarted by a mysterious someone, threatening with enough force on behalf of "the Prince" to drop the hunt against the Coin Bearer, with a comical pop, she disappears.
In an age of wind and barren stone, a Jaghut and his mother wander the land, scattered as all their people, thwarting the potential of collected power. A self-imposed Babel, of sorts. The child, young by Jaghut standards, grows observing the powers of the winds shape and mould the earth to their liking. He takes after this, destroying his horrified mother in the process. He starts with lone Jaghut, but they resist or else escape him, brief satisfaction, but not enough. He takes to subjugating the beasts, the winds, the earth, the plants. The earth resists and bucks the subversion of its evolved order, yet not without the death of countless species. Then he meets the Imass, thinking creatures like the Jaghut, yet comically short-lived. These he can use, confounding them in cycles of invention, war, loss, discovery, rediscovery, rediscovery, rediscovery. They invent for themselves a god at the head of all things, and he fancies it to be himself, they discover tyranny of all forms for themselves, and he laughs. A True First Empire, a gathering of minds subjugated under an unbreakable bond. Tool's history proves backward. Then come the Jaghut, unified under a force so great that it tears through even this great Tyrant like paper, and Raest was subjugated, killed, and depowered. A barrow erected, a hemisphere frozen over for good measure. In the intervening years, the T'Lan Imass gather power of their own and wage genocide against the very Titans who were their salvation. Two enter the barrow, the threadbare mind of the once-god coalesces, he is freed, his Finnest stolen. With a concussive force, Raest, the First Emperor of Man, Jaghut Tyrant, steps into a new world.
High above, the Crone watches him emerge as four Black Soultaken Dragons and the Red Dragon Silanah, fly in to stop the monster. We get some old language of some sort, possibly Jaghut? "Dragnipurake" is of course the name of the Sword plus the suffix -Rake, "Draconiaes" seems to refer to, well, dragons, "t'na" is a conjunction of some sort? And finally, Eleint, which is whatever the Dramatis Personae names Silanah. Crone flies high, ready to watch the show unfold.
Raest emerges, and casually injures Burn on his way out, nuking a range of hills in the process. He considers waking her as well. This is a walking apocalyptic event, and our dear Anomander opted to join a party. He notices the dragons, and Holy Moly the fight that ensues is great. I'd mention highlights but that'd just be a beat-by-beat. He offers the Soletaken Tiste Andii to join him, but they refuse. Also of note, he calls Silanah a "Tiem." He rebuffs their initial assault and, telekinetically holding his body together, prepares to deliver death.

Chapter 21

A Chapter in two halves, beginning with our principal cast all filling into their positions for the climax, making last-minute pivots and discoveries. It ends with the fulfillment of the revenge plot against Lady Simtal and Turban Orr, and what a fulfillment it is! If only we don't feel so hollow afterwards.

An excerpt of Anomandris which is, interestingly enough, written by Fisher, the Rumor Born guy. Also, this is like the first bit of Anomandris we've seen since Tattersail and Calot tag-teamed a quotation in Ch. 2 (which also mentions it was written by Fisher, lol) and seems to recount the initial arrival of the dragons. First contact between the dragons and Tiste Andii? Who knows! (Actually, quite a few people probably know at this point)

The Chapter Itself

Lorn buries the Finnest in the garden at Simtal's estate. She observes the bustling crowds and almost breaks down at the sight. So much life reminds her of the many cities she's infiltrated before. The recollection of humanity becomes a cacophony, no one life worth any more than the millions around them. The Adjunct breaks at this, and Lorn has to will herself to don the persona again, with Sorry out of the picture, only the Coin Bearer remains. With her last chance to bail out behind her, the Adjunct begins moving towards her failure and death, foretold with certainty by the unwitting Tallent of Fiddler.
Meanwhile, in the Phoenix Inn, the Eel contemplates his next moves, whilst failing to button his coat. He decides that it is time for Circle Breaker to retire, for his own safety. He suspects that someone other than himself has been protecting the Coin Bearer, while the path to ultimate safety for the boy remains elusive. Most concerningly, the patterns in his head end tonight, the outcome of this Convergence is undecided.
Crokus and Apsalar, meanwhile, leave the Temple for the Fête. To the northeast, a "storm" of low rumbling thunder and ochre clouds builds and grows ever closer. As the thief is led down from the tower by Aps, he has another internal crisis. He really doesn't know Challice, and Apsalar's constant ease within his presence is confounding. Dude, she literally took a name axiomatically aligned with your life, take a hint.
The Captain of Simtal's guards berates the Bridgeburnurs for not all being Barghast, but agrees to pay them anyways. He stations them near the garden, as it's recently gotten a bit overgrown, and instructs them to steer the crowds away. Quick Ben and Mallet update Whiskeyjack on the encroaching Tyrant, and they agree to play things by ear if the monster gets any nearer.
Kalam and Paran leave the Phoenix Inn, not after the assassin makes a major threat to Scurve to, by any means necessary contact the city's Master of Assasins with their offer. They leave to find the Adjunct and put her to rest. Kalam takes note of the Greyfaces and begins to be bothered by their movements, for some reason.
Baruk arrives with Rake at the Fête. Despite the encroaching threat, the Tiste Andii seems unbothered, relaxed even. Turban Orr watches the two arrive with Lady Simtal. The Alchemist's mask is barely sufficient. Both a denial and an admission of secret power, depending on the viewer. Rake's mask is of a smug black and silver dragon. I've said it before and I'll say it again, Anomander Rake is That Guy. Still love him, though. The Councilman introduces himself and is introduced in turn to Lord Anomander Rake. The scene plays out humorously, with Orr unaware of how wildly out of his league he is, but does contain one odd detail. Rake, despite running Moon's Spawn, considers his title to be honorary, given by his people. Murillio and Rallick, begrudgingly aware of Kruppe's perfect mask choices, watch the High Alchemist and the Councilman converse, then nearly have an aneurysm over Kruppe (whom they were just praising) and his shenanigans. Kruppe, wearing the mask of a cherub slightly less innocent than himself (although not nearly so clever) bumbles his way toward Baruk and Rake, the latter of whom displays incredulity over this possibly being the Eel. Wise and discerning Kruppe the First notes Rake's nature as an inhuman Lord from high above, and a dragon. Of course, this is all a misunderstanding, and he apologizes, betrays himself as an eel of sorts, and leaves to inspect the kitchen.
Turban Orr, meanwhile, finds himself unable to enjoy the party. The last two weeks have exhausted him, all his plans confounded, and his spy still unfound. He, at last, discovers Circle Breaker, in a chance passing, but is intercepted by a man in a Trake mask. The man practically insists on insulting the Councilman, and Orr, his temper ratcheted up by the past several days, decides to indulge his wrath on this peon. Orr calls for a duel, politically selecting Councilman D'Arle as his second. Meanwhile, Murillio draws deep on his well of suave and seduces Simtal in record time. The duel will go uninterrupted. Down by the terrace, Baruk contemplates interceeding, but declines. Curiously, he considers Rallick his closest friend, explaining the Otataral gift, but it is a shame we never go to see the two interact, there's a story there. Rake offers to be RN's second, and my hype has hit yet another threshold. Here is where I leave my desk for a mandated break, I'm not the sort of person who eats and reads, so I'm mentally cussing the entire way there and back. Baruk meets Mammot on his way to the duel and notes the scholar's accurate Jaghut mask; although Mammot recognizes minute flaws in the design, Baruk thinks nothing of this. Stranger still, despite Oppon's luck drawing Crokus to the party, it is also keeping him away from his uncle.
The Bridgeburners watch everyone filter out into the courtyard by the garden, watching the preparations for the duel. Though they notice Rake, this doesn't amount to much. Quick Ben updates the group on their timetable with the Tyrant, and they make preparations to blast the estate then the city.
Crokus finds Challice; without a method of reaching her at the moment he is distracted by the duel. Kruppe, finds the boy and nabs him while passing a note off to Circle Breaker. The note grants Circle Breaker the right to retire, as well as land and a title in the city of Dhavran (the map shows this to be along the western bank of Lake Azur) as thanks for being the Eel's most trusted servant. The circle is mended (whatever that means, there seems to be a story there) and he can at last rest. Despite everything going down in this and subsequent chapters, this storyline had me by far the most hyped. Good job man, you've earned it.
Baruk offers to referee, and the participants take their places. Turban Orr's grandstanding, and the seconds' lack of comments each take as much time as the fight itself. As everyone notes, this is not a duel, but a public murder. That Anomander Rake decides to get publicly entangled in the proceedings not to comment or contribute at all, but just to watch this fool get merc'd, strikes me as darkly funny. Orr is dead and as Rallick quietly gloats to the corpse, the scandal is broached, and the hostess is nowhere to be found. A large woman in a green dress approaches Baruk and Rake, introduced as the Witch Derudan, another member of the Cabal. Also, she has a personal servant to carry a hookah with her at all times. They leave Rake's presence to discuss some matters.
Simtal, meanwhile, finally arrises from her 30 minutes with Murillio, becoming aware of some great disturbance downstairs. She begins dressing and is interrupted by Rallick Nom entering the room. Rallick stays only long enough to convey his purpose and her situation. It is Murillio who stays a moment to watch the woman process what has become of her. Years of machinations and backroom (or perhaps, bedroom) deals all hinging on the continued support of those around her. With no one, the vultures and enemies she's made will come, likely they've already begun. Murillio leaves a dagger and grants her the privacy to escape the coming storm.
Lady Simtal, you deserved this but that doesn't make what was done to you right. What business does justice have with cruelty? Swearing by the Lady of Beggers, Murillio comes to the crashing realization of what this night has cost his soul. Coll is reinstated, yes, but at incalculable cost to his dearest friends.
Crokus, meanwhile, finally gets the opportunity to peel away from Kruppe and approach Challice, after getting the girls attention, she runs over to him, overjoyed to finally have a moment alone with...Gorlas. Panicking, Crokus does the sane thing and kidnaps her, because that'll make this run smoother, y'kow?
At the first opportunity, Circle Breaker sneaks out of the estate and into the night a free man. Passing a food-comatose Kruppe, he leaves smiling, awed by his own escape.

Chapter 22

A major action climax for a few plotlines, with a resolution I've vacillated between sour and sweet on, currently resting at sweet as I've processed things.

Epigraph

A poem titled Ravens by Collitt. Acknowledging the Great Ravens as a sign of disaster, the poet fears and reveres them. Politically, this is one of my favorites thus far. Also, I love the connection between the Great Ravens and, well, normal ravens. Ravens are carrion feeders, who gather at signs of battle. Sapient Great Ravens gather at the signs of great events and cataclysmic battles, searching for "interesting" events. That's just a really fun connection.

The Chapter Itself

Two of the Soultaken driven from battle, Raest prepares for his final thrust. The Gadrobi Hills are devastated, sundered by his travels and battle. He's killed a few odd creatures along his path as well, who we recognize as the garrison that helped Coll and Paran, as well as Councilman Orr's messenger to Pale. Cresting a hill, he is briefly in awe of Darujhistan, then offers Silanah one last opportunity to retreat. She makes no reply, nor is she even prepared for battle. Raest steps forward, away from Genebakis and into another time, within the dreams of a great, pudgy mage.
Despite his best attempts, Raest can do nothing to kill the creature, introducing itself as Kruppe. He informs the Tyrant that he bows to no one, Tyrant or god; in the face of such indifference, there is nothing Raest can do. Beset by a T'lan Imass from behind; despite his best efforts, Onos T'oolan cannot be bound by the Jaghut, as our dear Tool is called by an ancient call of a Bonecaster, Pran Chole's. Befuddled by such impotence on his part, Raest is befuddled further still by the appearance of another interloper, K'Rul. He initially mistakes him for Hood (which greatly alters my estimation of the god's lifespan) although he only refers to him as the Death Wanderer, as opposed to the god of Death. K'Rul warns Raest of the arrival of Anomander Rake and the new form of death he brings with him. Raest scoffs at this initially, but K'Rul makes a fascinating revelation. The flow of power between the gods and mortals has shifted, though of it the mortals are ignorant. I suppose when you have mages mastering domains and relics capable of drawing the gods who wield them, it makes sense. Anything less than omnipotence can be overmastered. K'Rul also repeats his Maker of Paths title and reveals his aspect "was the Obelisk." So he's Burn's predecessor and not Hood's. Given Burn's Sleep began nearly 1200 years ago, that gives us a roughly 800-year window for the shift, given Darujhistan's founding, whatever Crokus may say. This whole sequence is filled with even more magic technobable, but I'll move on. Title of Sword? Moved to the Realms of Chaos, K'Rul's birthplace? I'll figure it out eventually. With a hollow laugh, Raest collapses into dust, his spirit invading a new body.
Kalam and Paran creep into Simtal's garden, finding there a young woman, along with a curious structure. The woman turns out to be Sorry, yet not Sorry. Kalam prevents the Captain from killing her outright, instead ascertaining that she has no memory or deeply incomplete memories of her time in the Bridgeburners. Kalam's reaction to being called a friend is priceless. They observe the structure, a tree stump that is somehow growing from moment to moment, frustrating the eyes as it does. At this moment, one is reminded of the acorn and the Finnest. Paran leaves to fetch Mallet, wondering if the healer could aid the girl.
Rallick, gripped with a malaise he cannot account for, stumbles to leave the party. What if Coll doesn't take his old Lordship back? Would what he's done be justified even if he does? As a reader, I have to wonder, how much of the blame lies on Oppon, and how much on RN himself? Interrupting his musings, he stumbles across a disgruntled and awake Kruppe. The mage is worried, although trusts K'Rul's words that the world as it is now would be enough to put down Raest. The assassin leaves Kruppe behind and is approached by a woman in a featureless mask, who circuitously reveals herself to be Vorcan. She mentions Councilman Orr possessed protective magics that Rallick somehow trivialized. For that reason, she requires his services now. One last note on their conversation here, that RN was fine submitting to punishment helps show how defeated he is, now that his slavish devotion to the plan justifying his own humanity is over with. Defending someone else's humanity cannot serve as a substitute for your own, Rallick, and I feel you know this now.
Crokus, meanwhile, is totally bungling his attempts to speak with Challice. Promising not to hurt her, after a slew of threats, of course, he lets her speak. She reveals that she never betrayed him and that they'd always known the Rope was behind the guard's death. Horrified, Crokus reels from the revelation, wondering what exactly is going on. Chalice restates her love for Gorlas (or more tellingly, his station and his love for her) and her desire to have nothing to do with Younghand's cloak-and-dagger shenanigans. She slips up at the end, patronizing him briefly, and Crokus (more than a little hypocritically) accuses her of romanticizing the dangers of the real world. They part on the worst possible terms.
Mallet, for his part, refuses to enter the garden. Recognizing the power within and its hunger, he demands Paran bring Sorry to him. She heads to the healer smilingly, and Kalam expresses regret that she hadn't smiled before. Mallet discovers Rigga's presence within the girl, torn whether to help what little remains of the Wax Witch to integrate Sorry's history into Apsalar's consciousness safely. Paran advises the healer to trust it. Rallick, Vorcan, and Crokus all enter the glade, the latter staying hidden. Paran meets them as they discuss the stump, with Vorcan asking Rallick to sit on it and dampen its growth. It's here that Rallick just outright admits to knowing the substance he'd used was Otataral dust, rendering my whole Eureka moment a bit... moot. Also, Rallick knew what it was the whole time?! Why play coy with something you'll eventually give to us outright, Erikson? It's either a mystery or not. There have been a handful of moments like this, where a mystery will be teased and then casually solved. It - I - uh, whatever I guess. That's only the second most infuriating reveal in this chapter anyway.
Kalam offers Vorcan 900k golden doubloons jakatas and a High Fist position to kill off the T'orrud Cabal. Paran assures her that Malazan can scare off the Son of Darkness, having done so twice before. Vorcan personally accepts the contract and after charging Rallick with sitting on the stump until a better solution can be reached, leaves to prepare for the grim task. After everyone leaves, Rallick invites Crokus out of the glade and charges the boy with warning Mammot and Baruk of their impending danger. At that moment, something occurs outside of the garden, and the stump grows past Rallick's ability to contain it.
Sensing the disturbance at the Fête, Baruk laments leaving so early. Rake assures him the situation is under control, but stops himself from revealing one other piece of information, his eyes betraying a quiet sadness. He then offers to help clear the streets for something else coming, using Dragnipur to clear a passage to K'Rul's Belfry after warning Baruk of Malazan's impending assassination attempt.
At the Fête, Raest arives. Subsuming the mind of Mammot, whom he'd imprinted upon while waking, he launches an assault upon the partygoers. Quick Ben manages to save Derudan in the initial volley, which tears through the estate in a series of propagating bolts of power. Whiskeyjack's leg is crushed under a pillar, down for the count, and Captain Paran appears to be instantly vaporized in the initial assault. Derudan and QB launch twin assaults on Raest, quickly draining the Witch.
Here we have what is likely the most vexing scene in the entire book. Or, perhaps, the start of several compoundingly vexing scenes. Paran drops into what seems to be yet another warren, a swamp of sorts, within which a T'lan Imass (likely Tool) and a wooden approximation of a Jaghut fight. Behind the Captain, a house grows out of the swamp. The Imass warns Paran that something called an Azath is not yet ready to contain the animate Finnest. Paran resolves to hold the Finnest until the Azath is made ready. Launching a blast against Paran's very soul, the Finnest circumvents even Chance, or perhaps the blade has at last betrayed him. The Finnest demands total submission, but Paran refuses. Within him, the... Blood of a Hound? wells up, refusing to be subdued. Did the souls of the Hounds follow Paran back out of Dragnipur? That was roughly when Paran's whole "no one's gonna control me" arc began in full. Anyway, Perrin Paran throws himself against the Finnest, tearing into it with fists, claws, and teeth, holding it down until he is shaken out of his blood fury. The Azath is finished and draws the Finnest below the mud. Paran is shunted out of the Warren into the material plane.
Noting Paran's return, Quick Ben assaults the Tyrant with everything he has, opening SEVEN Warrens within himself. A feat that is later noted to be theoretically impossible. He burns through the monster, reducing it to an animate, humanoid totem of ash. Raest retaliates, forcibly closing QB's Warrens one after another. QB is about to give up, before noticing Hedge, off to the side, a pyromanic grin on his face, Ben dives, covering Derudan and his ears. The sapper fires, blasting Mammot's body to smithereens. Paran runs off to inform WJ as QB notices something coalescing in the bottom of Hedge's crater.
It is then that the Azath drags the remaining spirit of Raest kicking and screaming into the garden. So, it turns out Azaths are a known force in this world, but I'll get to that later. I will note its appearance is a surprise to everybody. Was it the acorn? But if the Jaghut could seal the Finnest in an Azath, why not just go all the way? Many questions and few answers. Derudan leaves, and Fiddler and Hedge are sent off to blast the city. Kalam then finally realizes the potential danger of not only blowing up the City of Blue Fire, but of doing so at major infrastructure hubs. Took y'all long enough.

Chapter 23

A resolution to all but one of our action climaxes, and a final unveiling of several long-standing plans. We're solidly in the endgame now, and somehow only speeding up.

Epigraph

After a long hiatus, we receive another excerpt of Call to Shadow, this one seemingly referring to Simtal's suicide. Given that the author is apparently Paran's sister, the nature of the work is becoming clearer, this is a recounting of the events here in Darujhistan. I'm a bit unclear as to why its specifically attributed to Shadow, aside from Shadow's interference being the inciting incident to all this mess. Perhaps that's sufficient, however. What we can tell from this is that Paran eventually meets with Fellisin again, despite his status as a traitor. So while we can't tell whether or not this will all have a happy ending, we can tell the Paran siblings will make it that far at least.

The Chapter Itself

Paran, running through the undergrowth, is drawn into yet another Warren, ambushed by Rood. After nearly tearing the Captain apart, the Hound relents, confused by a sense of kinship. Cotilion appears, complaining that the Captain should interfere with House Shadows, especially given his growing enmity with the Empress. Even still, Cotillion will try again, correcting for the flaws of the initial plan. He considers his treatment of Sorry merciful, insofar as the necessary evil could be. Paran offers Cotillian Chance, seeing as how his luck has finally turned, and the Rope accepts with the intent to strike back at the Twins. Paran wakes back in the garden and leaves to find the Adjunct.
So, what was Oppon's plan for the captain? His use of Chance infuriated Hairlock and the Hounds, drawing the two together, and evidently claiming the Hounds' souls/blood in the process. Thus, Paran was able to resist the Finnest and buy the Azath time. The only issue was that is the Brother's actions in Dragnipur seemed to be surprised by the whole episode. An act? Beyond that, Paran also played half the role in freeing Sorry, thwarting Shadow's aims at Empire. j
Crokus, traumatized by the sight of Mammot possessed, burned, blown to bits, and claimed by the roots of the Azath, runs to find Baruks home. He (and the audience) can only hope that Mammot himself was released to death before the Azath took the possessed body. Running through the streets of Darujhistan, he finally comes to realize why they've emptied so. Rake has moved Moon's Spawn directly overhead, looming as if to crush the city at any moment.
The Adjunct tails the Coin Bearer, sensing the Jaghut Tyrant's death. Assuming Rake's involvement in the defeat, she releases Tayscheren's Ace in the Hole. A Lord of the Gaylen demons, powerful enough to challenge an ascendant, the intended follow-up in the one-two punch which would finish off Rake or Raest, whoever survived their clash. The Adjunct then tails the Coin Bearer further, considering the woman Lorn dead for good. She does not even consider the Adjunct human, but a tool. Lost entirely in her own justification, the Adjunct carries on.
Baruk mourns Mammot in his study. He's deduced too late that Rake knew all along, choosing to shield Baruk from the anticipation of his possessed friend's impending death. The Witch Derudan arrives, prepared to mourn with him, as an act of love. She informs Baruk of the extraordinary circumstances surrounding Mammot's death, as well as the conjuration of an Azath in Darujhistan. The specific use of the word conjuration implies something caused its appearance, though if not the acorn, I couldn't guess what. They feel the release of the demon lord, as well as two more of the Cabal members at the hand of Vorcan.
Anomander Rake, atop the belfry of K'Rul's temple. Silahnah arrives, but Rake asks she leave, she's done enough for today. K'Rul himself arrives, and the two speak of their misplaced wandering within this world. Rake knows no other life than wandering from battle to battle, yet it does not fulfill him. The elder god, having failed to receive the advice he craves, leaves the Lord to his battle. Rake watches as the Galen arises, and begins changing form. Rake then shapeshifts, rising higher, higher, higher above the city into a Silvermaned Black Dragon, more massive even than Silanah, and dives towards his ignorant prey.
The Adjunct formerly known as Lorn moves to kill the Coin Bearer at last. She's interrupted by, of all people, a member of the Crimson Guard.* Fingers, Sixth Blade of the Crimson Guard, grabs Crokus and escorts him to Baruk's place personally. During their discussion, Crokus at long last learns of his nature as the Coin Bearer, and is advised to lose the item as soon as his luck runs out. It is the CG who have been protecting the boy. After breaking away from Blues, a gravely injured Adjunct runs into Meese and Iralta, who finish her off.
* Upon review, Caladan Brood does commit some Crimson Guard members to protect the Coin Bearrer in Ch. 10 debriefing with Crone, just a bit circumlocutiously. He even names the sixth blade, and Kallor immediately takes it to mean they're interfering with Rake.
Paran comes across the Adjunct, injured beyond saving, or at least, dying faster than a healer can be acquired. She laments her ironic, inglorious death, and barely has time to marvel over Paran's return from the dead. The two share a moment of cold sympathy before her end. Paran claims the Otataral blade for himself. The Twins appear before him, begging for protection from Shadowthrone. Paran tells them off, and quietly picks up the Adjunct, returning to the Phoenix Inn.

Chapter 24

The breathless end of it all, flowing almost immediately into subsequent adventures. Anything I'm not fully satisfied with is at least spoken to, promising further resolution or explanation later.

Epigraph

An excerpt of a poem titled Azath by Adaephon. Written as if narrated by the titular entity, the poem speaks a bit about their purpose. Both a lure and a prison to the power-crazed, an endless prison in a world where death is trivialized to the powerful. It is interesting how much of a known entity these are, despite us not hearing about them until well after its arrival, and that no one (outside of possibly Rake) considered the Convergence would produce one. Ah, well.

The Chapter Itself

Crokus cannot enter Baruk's compound, being frustrated by the High Alchemist's wards. Fortunately, he has one last bit of luck. The Demon Lord crashes to the ground, slammed by Rake's assault from above. The crash shatters the gate and any potential wards. Both dragons shift back to their base forms, and the Galayn taunts Rake. Crokus feels someone walk up behind him, and the Lord of Moon's Spawn asks that Crokus flees. He notes that he is speaking with the Coin Bearer, but Brood's "request" and the impending fight save the lad. Rake and the Demon Lord fight, sword to axe, and while the contest isn't quite the spectacle of Raest soloing five dragons, its pretty great. We even get a bit of lore out of it. It seems indeed that some version of the story Tool told Lorn was true, Dark birthed Light, but then light was corrupted. Demons being corrupted denizens of Light is, well, exactly on brand, so that tracks. Crokus watches in horror as the Galayn Lord is subsumed into the black blade. AR then turns with exhaustion to the lad, and asks him to warn Baruk of the impending danger.
Baruk and Derudan have set up a magical barrier, but Baruk hesitates to enter it. His hesitation buys him nothing, however, as Vorcan attacks just as the ward is shattered outside. She is forced back by a Tiste Andii assassin, Serrat, who is stabbed by the Master of Assassins. Derudan is similarly stuck down, minutely to slow to take advantage of the distraction. Baruk, fleeing, runs to the door, in which is Crokus, who is able to (luckily) land two near impossible blows against Vorcan, by way of thrown bricks. She flees, and Baruk gets up, moving to save the injured. Serrat has passed, but Baruk reveals that he is able to save Darudan by curing the white paralt in her system.* They mourn Mammot, and then the young thief leaves to find Apsalar.
*Which is also just named outright as a spider, but this one annoys me far less than the Otataral thing.
I'll skip a scene breifly to maintain momentum, but it works in the chapter as is.
Rallick watches the stump, now a house, contemplating the capture he saw earlier. He is experiencing an unaccountable euphoria, believing the house to be "right, and just." Vorcan arrives, begging Rallick to protect her, before fainting. He picks her up, and with no better ideas, runs headlong into the cognitohzardous house, disappearing to we know not where. I suspect we haven't seen the last of either Rallick Nom or Vorcan, but that is the last we see of either this book. Korlat, a Tiste Andii assassin and sister to Serrat, enters the glade. She regards the Azath edielmarn or "Pillar of Innocence" and decides against the pursuit further. To continue the hunt would be to destroy the Azath, and its youthful innocence. In this, Korlat takes after the Queen of Darkness, who defended Light when it too was youthful and innocent. Oddly, in this, Korlat morally succeeds where Rallick failed. We learn that other objects such as this exist, such as the Deadhouse in Malaz city, where Kellanved and Dancer evidently walked through its... Gates. So we know people can leave these things, giving some hope for Rallick an Vorcan's return. Also, considering the heights to which the two Ascended after entering, first through Empire then godhood, R and V may have a long road ahead of them. Who knows? as my cheaky pun earlier hinted, I'm aware of the next book's title, so we may be seeing them soon.
Back at the Phoenix Inn, Whiskeyjack contacts Dujek to update him as to the nights proceedings. Tayscheren is in a coma after what happened to the Galayn Lord, and WJ states that they'll not be taking the city, for fear of detonating the natural gas caverns beneath. This is of course, a problem. The what's left of the 2nd is loosing Pale, Caladan Brood has marched south as Dujek guessed, and brought two other armies besides with him, beyond this, Laseen has outlawed Dujek himself, as Seven Cities is to close to rebellion for him to be useful in saving it in time. The Empire has now severed its last link to the Old Guard as a result.
The Black Moranth stand with Onearm, and will pick up the Bridgeburners once they're out of the city. WJ is made Dujek's second, and Paran is placed in charge of the BBs. Hopefuly, Brood knows enough about the Pannion Seer to accept Dujek's force's continued existence. Though they're free to walk, all of WJ's squad resolves to stay with the rebels, with two slight exeptions. Kalam and Fiddler have decided to leave with Apsalar, whom they're taking home; they commit to return once that is over with. WJ notices Coll is awake, but the Lord only offers them passage out of the city in gratefulness.
The main text of the novel ends with Kruppe, Murillio, and Crokus walking towards the Phoenix Inn. Kruppe assuages Crokus's worries by reassuring him that he knows Apsalar's location, and shrugs off concerns over Rallick, speaking more to the man's likely safety. We find out Challice was saved by Gorlas, tying off that loose end, and begins to regale them with the tale of how Darujistan was saved and Coll was reinstated, with his heroic aid, of course.

Book 7: The Fête

An excellent climax all around, pulling out every stop. While the initial experience was a bit jarring, with all the revelations, I am satisfied as I've let it sit. On the whole, I probably prefer a slower reading pace, but once I committed to finishing the whole thing, I was fine riding it out.
I'm straining against Reddit's 40k charachter limit, so I'll give my thoughts on the Epilogue, a deeper dive into the side materials, as well as thoughts on the novel as a whole soon.

Just got back from a solo trip through South Africa, and despite all the cautions and reservations I heard on- and off-line, I loved every bit of it! Sharing some quick notes here for reference, and happy to answer any queries from people thinking of travelling there.

Itinerary
2N in Johannesburg with visits to Apartheid Museum, Soweto, and Rosebank Mall. Stayed at Clico Boutique Hotel in Rosebank. Found the city to be pleasant and well worth the stopover, also perfectly safe if navigated using Uber or through join-in tours.
3N in Greater Kruger, specifically at Nyati Safari Lodge in the Balule Reserve, with 2x game drives daily (morning and evening). Saw 3 of the big 5 (missed out on Rhinos and Leopards but have seen them earlier in India, so no heartache) as well as animals unique to Africa - hippos (right outside my room!), zebra, giraffes, and more antelopes than I can remember the names of. Also did a bushwalk, and loved all the bush sundowners and breakfasts. It was absolutely safe inside the lodge, the bigger threats mere mischeivous monkeys raiding the mini-bar. This was my first African Safari experience, and I loved every bit of it - can definitely see myself become a safari hoe in the years to come.
2N in Franschhoek, with a day-long self-cycle through the region (the road from Berg River Dam to Huguenot Memorial is beautiful), and more wine tastings (highly recommend Eikehof and Glenwood) than I'd had in the entirety of my life till the day. The place was my favourite in SA - beautiful, delicious, creative, and a bubble of safety. Stayed at the lovely Chanteclair guesthouse (the host Allan is a gem).
3N in Cape Town, with visits to Table Mountain, the waterfront, a peninsula tour (Camp's Bay, Hout Bay, Chapman's Peak, Cape of Good Hope, Boulders Penguin Colony, and Muizenberg), Kirstenbosch, Company's Garden, Zeitz MCAA (fantastic if you're into art) and Bo Kaap (with the lovely and free Cape Town Walking Tours). The city is easily one of the most, if not the most, beautiful in the world - the setting is spectacular, even in the cold, windy, rainy weather I was there in. It was also markedly safer than Joburg, and there were several parts of town where walking around didn't make me feel as on-edge. Stayed at Taj Cape Town (stellar downtown hotel which allows easier access to the actual city than the tourist enclave hotels of the lively but sterile Waterfront area).
Safety
Almost everyone I spoke to before visiting South Africa painted it as a free-for-all crime zone. I'd be mugged, raped, killed, or whatnot here, they said. Don't go alone. Don't go at all. All of it, ofcourse, turned out to be overblown, panic-stricken hogwash. I navigated the country without incident. BUT I didn't just stroll into town with an open wallet either - I made sure to stay at good hotels (within my budget), keep my valuables hidden away like in a secure backpack or an inside pocket, check locally for safety advice, and use Ubers or tours wherever recommended. These weren't special safety procedures designed for South Africa, mind you, they were just common precautions I'd use in any country I was visiting. It helped my travel remain incident free, and the only time I was approached by someone mildly unsavoury was when a drunk man stumbled past saying 'Good day brother' in Bo Kaap. The biggest threat to my safety in SA turned out to be marauding monkeys at my lodge near Kruger who raided the neighbouring room's minibar and made away with milk and coffee sachets. Also, contrary to some advice, things left lying around in my hotel room as well as check-in baggage at the airports remained absolutely safe and untampered.
Power (Cuts)
Load shedding is rife, and Joburg was seeing 10-12 hours of load shedding while I was there. However, all my hotels had power backup, and all the spots I visited had power backup (wherever needed), so I effectively only ever noticed loadshedding during the switch-overs between supply and gensets in my smaller Joburg and Franschhoek hotels. I even disabled the push notifications for the power supply app (ESP) because it was of no real use to me any more. Moral of the story - make sure your hotel has power backup, and carry a power bank in the unlikely event you find yourself at a cafe without electricity. Also, check up on the power points - I didn't do my research properly and had to buy two overpriced plugs in Joburg.
Weather
Joburg had crisp weather with lots of sun, but cool temperatures. Kruger had warm days and cool nights - layers were essential! Franschhoek was kinda like Joburg weather, while Cape Town was windy and rainy. The only place I could contemplate swimming was in Kruger and in the heated pool of my Cape Town hotel.
Food
EXCELLENT everywhere, even in remote Kruger. Franschhoek, however, was a highlight - if there's one place you'd want to splurge for good food, it's here. Also helps that the wine is cheap and plentiful and sublime. For vegetarians and vegans, most restaurants had symbols identifying suitable menu items, and everyone speaks English so its easy to clarify. Would recommend making online reservations at the more popular fine dining spots.
Costs
On the whole, South Africa is very affordable for someone used to American or European or Japanese or Singaporean prices, especially with the unabated fall of the ZAR. Coming from India, however, it was a bit of a mixed bag - dining out was very cheap, and hotels were great value, but domestic flights and longer taxi transfers (like Cape Town - Franschhoek or the day tours) felt expensive. Uber rides and high street shopping were just a tad pricier than I'm used to in India while the coffee and alcohol prices were an absolute delight. Entrance tickets to most sights, however, are fairly steep and much closer to the European norm than the African or Asian. That said, major sights are professionally managed, clean, safe, and have power backup.
Tipping is expected, I'd round things upward of 10% of the bill amount, except at a fine dining experience in Franschhoek where a service charge was explicitly included and informed about. Tips can be added to the card machine and need not necessarily be paid in cash.
Paying by card is practically universal in tourist-friendly spots (including entry tickets and even for smaller payments), and I didn't need to exchange any extra cash or use an ATM. Visa and Mastercard work everywhere ofcourse, and Amex has appreciable reach as well. Diner's Club and others, however, won't help.
It's good to exchange a small amount like 100 USD to help with petty payments like parking tickets or small tips or quick bites from convenience stores.
Communication
I purchased a Vodacom sim on arrival at Johannesburg, and it worked well everywhere, even giving 5G in most of Joburg, Cape Town, and Franschhoek centre. Data and talktime prices were a tad expensive (I'm spoilt because it's dirt cheap in India), but it was easy to top things up online or at stores on-the-go.

Getting around
Uber works well in Joburg and Cape Town, with many local recommending Uber X. Bolt, however, was universally NOT recommended because it wasn't very reliable. I didn't try public transport, but heard that the Gautrain in Joburg and the Myciti BRT in Cape Town were safe and good quality.
I also flew from Johannesburg to Hoedspruit and Hoedspruit to Cape Town with Airlink, which was a great little regional airline with good service, punctual arrivals/departures, and a very tourist-friendly schedule and network. The tickets were quite overpriced though, and Amex refused to work on their own website, but I did get to check-in on to business class seats on economy tickets so I guess it was good overall.
I didn't self-drive. However, I met several travellers who did it (including a German lady who was campervanning solo across the entirety of southern Africa), and they reported it being easy and safe. The only precautions were to make sure you were hiring from a reputable company, not driving too much at night (out of fear of being stranded more than anything else), and purchasing the insurance plan with the agent. I did use plenty of roads, and generally observed that most highways were in decent shape and allowed for 100+ kmph speeds. Petrol stations were plentiful, and many came attached with convenience stores and mini-malls, usually with power backup. For parking, you'd usually have a local tout popping up helping you manouevre the car and watch over it for a small 5-10 ZAR tip (don't skimp on this, as petty thieves have been known to break into unattended cars to pilfer whatever they can, though I never ever saw this in action - practically every street in every town had a parking attendant on hand).
I did cycle around Franschhoek by myself and it was fantastic, much better than the kitschy Wine Tram experience. It was also very safe, and I even biked through town for dinner and some moonlight photos. The only bugbears were car traffic on the main roads, and a caution by the bike rental shop against leaving the night lamp on the bike unattended (had to unlatch it and keep it on me instead - but still, safer than biking in Amsterdam lol).
Getting there
Joburg is the biggest international airport with the better flight deals and has direct flights to all inhabited continents. It's a fairly modern and easy-to-use terminal, and I didn't observe any of the usual scams. Cape Town is the better looking airport, but has fewer connections, although it's still easy to get here with a simple transit at a major hub like London or Dubai. Durban also has a middle-sized airport with a handful of long haul links.
Most other airports are small - Hoedspruit was basically a collection of open-to-air pavillions - and have only domestic flights to the likes of JNB or CPT. Nelspruit, in southern Kruger has a few Airlink connections with Victoria Falls and the Mozambique coast, aimed at holidayers.
As an Indian, I was eligible for an evisa but the system never worked, taking my documents but never letting me pay the application fee. I instead applied manually at Delhi's VFS centre, and got my visa in 2 days (the VFS staff also told me that the evisa portal was hopeless and I shouldn't even have bothered). The evisa system finally budged while I was en-route to JNB, telling me that my application was rejected because I never submitted a bank statement (which I did) and completely ignored the fact that I never paid for my application (thanks to the inactive payment link). The rejection clearly didn't get slotted in anywhere because Immigrations was absolutely fine with my stamped-visa and didn't bother asking me anything other than why I was visiting and when I'd leave.
I flew in on Etihad via Abu Dhabi (decent airline but the airport needs a lot of work to compete with its neighbours) and back on Emirates via Dubai (excellent airline with very generous meals and a great IFE, as well as a huge and modern megahub airport experience albeit with overpriced food and shopping). Flight timings were fairly convenient both ways, with day-time arrivals and check-ins.
People
Some of the friendliest I've ever met! Everybody is happy to have a zany chat, and conversations can quickly become pal-ly and banter-ful if you're open enough. On the whole South Africans felt fairly extroverted and loosened up - very informal and sleeves-rolled-up. You'll have to excuse yourself out of a conversation, else you'll be left talking to them the whole day and not have any time left to sightsee.
Race
Speaking as an outsider who only observed things for 10 odd days, I felt that there's still a decent amount of racial segregation at play in SA.
While many lower-paying jobs are almost exclusively held by blacks and the colours thanks to the country's history of institutionalised racism, Blacks and Coloured peoples can now also be commonly seen in upscale areas as guests and visitors. However, the majority of patrons in these locations appeared to be white and Afrikaans speaking. I also only ever saw one mixed group - a white lady entertaining a black man and his daughter at a Cape Town waterfront restaurant where I was having dinner.
I did share a few drinks with Joburg-based white couples at my safari lodge, and on the whole, they didn't feel inherently racist. They in fact remembered the Mandela and Mbeki days with pride, and felt that most of the crime in South Africa was thanks to the corruption in the African National Congress (they were all praises for the opposition who holds sway in the Cape) and immigrants from neighbouring countries - they rather trusted Black South Africans for everyday affairs. At my Cape Town hotel, meanwhile, I met a few black businessmen and politicians at the pool and gym, and they told me similar things - that the ANC was corrupt, immigrants are to blame for crime etc, and didn't really have any strong opinions about whites. These experiences contrasted greatly with my conversation with a white Afrikaner pensioner in my Zanzibar hotel ten years ago, who was spewing hate against black crime after two whiskeys.
Since I'm Indian, I was often mistaken for a local - everybody (regardless of their race) would be taken aback when they heard my accent and learnt I was actually not South African (which has a large South Asian origin community) or even African (many South Asian origin peoples in eastern Africa and Mauritius especially). This spoke volumes to me - in the UK, where I studied and which now has an Indian-origin PM and a hugely visible South Asian diaspora, people would still ask me 'what country are you from?' on appearance alone. It really did emphasize how SA was more of a rainbow nation than just a slogan.
What did I like?
Practically everything, even Joburg. The safari experience was better than I expected, Cape Town was breathtaking, and Franschhoek became my favourite little town in the world. Also loved the food and the wine, and loved meeting and chatting with the locals. Of all the countries I've visited, SA is the one I'm surest about wanting to return to - and I'm not trying to be diplomatic - I honestly felt like I need more time here.
What didn't I like?
I disliked how such a great country with excellent basic infrastructure is being mismanaged. EVERYONE I spoke to was complaining about how corruption killed the country's power supply system and railways and is now threatening other aspects of life. None of these directly or visibly impacted my travels, but I would've liked being able to take a train instead of flights or not spend a premium to stay at places that had generators.
Anything I'd change?
While Joburg turned out to be a pleasant place, had I the option, I'd have skipped it to spend more time in Cape Town. I'd also spend a few more days in Franschhoek and around - the area turned out to be my favourite. Now that I've also had a lay of the land, I'm more confident about self-driving next time I visit. Also, I only realised how convenient it is to travel from SA to neighbouring countries, and would like to latch on visits to the Namibian desert, Botswana's game parks, the Victoria Falls on the Zambia-Zimbabwe border, and the beaches of Mozambique alongside a return to SA.
I realise I could have managed some things better on this trip, but bottom line is that I enjoyed it, and that this is not a 'who had the best trip' competition. I'm just sharing my positive experience of South Africa in the hope that it encourages others to properly and safely plan a trip to the place instead of avoiding it out of second-hand-scares.
