2023.06.06 18:18 CHEEZYSPAM I've been listening to the new album over the weekend on repeat, here are my unsolicited thoughts. Has your opinion changed?
"Life is but a Dream..." seems like a drastic departure from what we've heard from A7X in the past, but I would say this is a companion piece to The Stage (especially with tracks like COSMIC and Beautiful Morning). So if you didn't love The Stage and the direction they took in their last album, I can see how people wouldn't love, or downright hate this one.
I'm a big A7X fan since Waking the Fallen was released 20 years ago (damn where has the time gone!?) So to expect that the band is going to sound the same after all that time is unrealistic. They have matured both in age and musically.
They lost (IMO) the 'soul' of the band when Jimmy died and have been struggling to find their purpose ever since... The band's library could easily be separated in the category of "before Nightmare and post Nightmare".
Side note: Their white (self titled) album is my favorite to date, while Hail to the King is my least favorite/least memorable album.
Speaking of The Rev... I was surprised to read the notes that the band used contributions from him! I'm interested to know what specifically was written by him. Lyrics, themes, drums, etc.?
I feel like they're on some acid trip since The Stage, that's not a bad thing, it's just different than what we know of them. I'll openly admit when I first heard "Nobody" on the radio, I wasn't initially all that impressed.
However, I have listened to LibaD all weekend and on the 2nd listen, I was hooked. I love the weirdness of some of the songs on here. From the System of a Down inspired Game Over to the driving beats on We Love You "More power, more pace, more money, more taste...more more more", it's so much fun. Cosmic and (O)rdinary sounds like beautiful leftovers from the Stage and I like thematic connection it has between the 2 albums. (D)eath is amazing... I don't know how else to put into words how much I love this song and how Shadows sings it all Sinatra crooning style. It sorta feels like they were in a NIGHTMARE and are slowly waking up and feeling their way through the fog.
In the end, I have no doubt this will be a love it or hate it entry. I feel like they definitely needed to express themselves creatively, but time will tell if they've gotten it out of their system? Will they continue the trend? Or go back to a heavier sound on the next album (which would be my guess). Love the band, love Life is but a Dream... I hope you do too or that you'll discover and learn to appreciate it over time.

I just finished it and really liked it! I generally like more solid plotting and just a tad less (like 10% less) fighting but this one ...
It's pretty random as far as story/plot goes but that's a feature, not a bug! It's soooo quintessentially Wuxia that it totally charmed me over.
Yes, as usual the fighting is captured at very close range to avoid actually having a well-choreographed fight, which should be the main point of Wuxia.
BUT they are super fun anyway! And thankfully, no awful CGI like SSS.
Yes, there are repeated sad romantic pining-themed collages-filled songs but like, they have kept it down to manageable levels.
So if u like Wuxia, please watch it! I was surprised that it had not been recommended to me as yet. I probably need to word my rec requests better, haha!

So the movie was remarkable and I loved it, I just wish they would've used the signature theme song of the franchise "chop shop". I feel like it was heavily missing throughout the movie and just got played once or twice and when it got played you wouldn't even notice it, so yeah that's about it, if they make the fifth one which I hope they do, I hope they'll use that song more.

However, I feel like it would have fit perfectly for Honeymoon’s sound, imagery and overall theme. I believe they even produced a mix for Honeymoon! It could even have been the first single. What were they thinking? I LOVE High By The Beach but always thought it was not a good fit for Honeymoon and was an odd first single choice lol.
It could have also been on Lust For Life because of the Shangri-la/hippie vibe it got. Or even Blue Banisters since it had some of her unreleased tracks.
That said, I think Say Yes To Heaven became a legend and hit on its own because of its notoriety as an unreleased track. The elusiveness added more appeal to the song. In the end, Say Yes To Heaven becoming a stand alone track kind of worked.

I'm an up and coming country artist. I record my music at home and I'm capable of playing just about all of the parts myself, but I have no experience with the violin. I've previously paid someone $30 to record a violin solo for one of my songs and it turned out great, but the part I received doesn't have the specific tone that I'm after for the new song that I'm recording, so I'm a little hesitant to hire the same person.
I'm aiming for a specific tone that I can only describe as "old west."

My question is: What makes this tone? Is it a different tuning? Different strings? Just an EQ adjustment? A specific playing style? Perhaps a different type of violin all together?
There's a strong chance I'm also being tricked into thinking it's a tone thing when it could be the result of 2 different violin parts, or a violin and a viola/cello playing on top of one another. If that's the case, is there a technique that nets this "wild west" result that I'm after?

When I was a young child, I had DVDs of this Christian music group called Go Fish or Go Fish guys. They were like a Christian Wiggles. They sang Christian songs, such as a song about the 10 Commandments or a song about how the Bible has all the answers to life's questions. I used to watch some of their music videos in the car, and I even went to a victory/sports themed VBS with a soundtrack by them. Over time, I stopped listening to them due to losing interest. I just wanted to ask if anyone else knew of them.
