Instax mini 11 film not developing

I went on a mini Sean Baker binge the other night and watched Red Rocket and The Florida Project. Red Rocket was very good, fun and sleazy in a great way. But the Florida Project absolutely blew my mind.
-I think Brooklyn Prince as Mooney might be my favorite child performance of all time. Up there with Tatum O'Neill, Jacob Tramblay, Haley Joel Osment, etc. She is just concentrated joy for 90% of the movie and when she breaks at the end it is an absolute gut punch.
-Rarely has a great actor done more while doing less than Willem Dafoe as Bobby. Its the opposite of a flashy role and he just does so much with it.
-The reality of the film being elevated just a few percentage points as Baker says makes it so magical feeling and not unlike the real feeling of childhood. The colors are brighter, the joy is at a fever pitch and then the sadness too.

I grew up with what I'd class as a strict Christian upbringing. I was taken out of school in year 5, was not allowed to attend secondary school as I would be corrupted by non Christians basically. I was Christian homeschooled until age 16. I was allowed no freinds.
I attended college when I was 16 for a few weeks but got taken out because I lied about my journey home from a college trip and got found out (went to a freinds for an hour said the train was late)
My aunt was like the "god" in my family. My mum listened to everything my aunt said because God told her. I got blamed for various things because "god told her" it was me. Yet my aunts daughter (a year older) could do nothing wrong. I couldn't look at my aunt as she intimidated me, she said this is because she has God within her so I couldn't make eye contact with her. She would come to my room and tell my mum and cousin she sensed evil spirits.
I suffered with mental health issues from age 11, self harmed, had body issues. I was seen as bad for my cousin (aunts daughter to be around) self harm = no seeing cousin, she was the only person I saw around my age group.
I liked rock music, but that was bad because it was of the devil. I liked wearing black but I wasn't allowed. I wasn't allowed a TV and was shamed for watching Harry Potter. I was only permitted to listen to Christian music (couldn't even listen to Mcfly for instance) and no films with swearing in.
I once convinced my mum to have a freind round that I made at a little group, she came round and we went into the porch, but because my aunt lived down the road and might see me and my freind, my mum told us to duck down.
My aunt constantly as a teen had me sit on the floor infront of her, my cousins, her husband, my mum and tell me how awful i was to my mum (i did hate her, if she even hugged me on the rare occasion it made me feel sick). I was so embarrassed.
I could do nothing right. I didn't rebel, i just suffered bad depression. People asked me why I didn't just rebel against them, but I felt completely trapped. My aunts sons were out doing drugs, sleeping about, the usual teen stuff, but they were never a problem, it was always me.
I feel as an adult now I suffer from many things because of my upbringing, one definitely being social anxiety and GAD. I'm tired of the past creeping up and effecting me in the present.

Finishing up the top five is Watch ‘Filmmakers for the Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, which had its biggest weekend drop yet, falling 42% for a $2.3 million seventh weekend. Of course, that's no reason to frown for the horror film, which has a domestic cume of $103 million and global cume of $ 210 million from a budget of just $20 million.
The one new specialty title of note comes from a filmmaker we don't typically associate with the specialty box office: Steven Spielberg. The Beard's semi-autobiographical family drama Watch ‘Filmmakers for the Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse opened in four theaters in New York and Los Angeles to $160k, a $40k average. Right now, I am daily driving 2 headsets: G2 and PSVR2. I own a Quest 2, CV1, Go, and the last 2 GearVRs.
Here is my opinion of who each upcoming headset is for:
Quest 3 - Fans of Quest 2 that want an upgrade. I think I will recommend people see if VR is for them with a Quest 2 first. Since they are dropping Quest 2 back to $299, I think used ones will be down to $199. Maybe Walmart will have the refirb black Friday sale again for like $199-249.
I expect Quest 3 pancake lenses will be a nice clarity bump, and I think the upgrade is worth $200 more, but some people buy VR and stuff it in a closet forever. In summary, Quest 3 is a reasonable upgrade for people who have tried and love standalone VR, and don't want to get a PC, or deal with a wire. Wireless PC gaming is valid, but I am personally not a fan of the compression.
I really don't mind the wire, and that's why I haven't used Quest 2 since December when I got my G2. It will be interesting to compare Quest 3 large sweet spot of clarity to G2. I expect the G2 to still be an overall better package for PCVR. Imo this comparison is still important, because we need to know the best PCVR headset around $500 USD. I am going to be really surprised if Quest 3 exceeds G2, because what I have heard about Quest Pro doesn't (I haven't tried Quest Pro so I can't speak to that).
The G2 still holds a candle to the Beyond according to recent through the lens comparisons, which still makes it the go-to entry level PCVR headset for at least another year or so imo. I haven't really heard of a PCVR headset coming that's going to cost around the price of Quest 2. It's a shame that Meta refuses to sell a SKU of Quest 3 with uncompressed Link at higher margin to the 20% of their users that use SteamVR, but I digress.
Bigscreen Beyond - PCVR enthusiasts that want a headset specifically made for maximum comfort, clarity, and compatible with the best tracking system available for VR. One thing I really like about Beyond is that they are taking their disadvantage of being a small company and turning it into an advantage. What I mean by that is I think they are actually making a product that a huge company like Meta couldn't make. I don't think Meta can reasonably sell a headset right now with a custom facial interface. It would be a nightmare to try to ship 20 million Quests all with a different facial interface. The custom interface will make a huge difference.
Not only that, but the yields and price of oled micro displays are not ready for a product with Quest sales volume. Meta are constrained by battery, mobile processing, etc that all add weight to the device. It will be a very long time before they can make a device as small and compelling as Beyond in a standalone form factor, with enough scale for it to make sense for them. All those sacrifices just to avoid a wire and the need for a PC.
If I could make an analogy, there is a director named Matt Johnson that turns his independent films into an advantage rather than a disadvantage. He knows big movie studios can't make films with the crazy plots he comes up with so rather than trying to do what the big guys do but worse, he makes stuff that only small directors can make. Bigscreen is essentially doing that, but for VR headsets.
Bigscreen's headset is literally right at the edge of the current display port standard, which is why the full resolution requires display stream compression at 90hz. All that and in a tiny form factor with pancake lenses? I just think they are making all the right decisions. I'm not trying to shill for them, but this is the first time since CV1 that I feel like one company is making the exact headset I want.
Apple Vision Pro - Developers and professionals with a very specific niche use-case. This is a first generation headset that Apple feels meets their minimum bar. I think this headset will have 2 positive effects on the market as a whole:

1. Supply chain. I think their demand for the components in this headsets will cause more attention to be brought to manufacturing various components. Off-the-shelf parts will become bettecheaper sooner than they would have without Apple's entry.
2. Public perception. VR will become slightly more accepted and normalized than it was before. This may also lead to more companies testing the water of VR hardware, especially if Google gets their shit together and makes a platform that hardware venders can take advantage of. Kinda like WMR but standalone. It would be pretty cash money if one of those chose to make a headset that actually tethers to a PC like the Pico 3 Link did...

One thing I have noticed about various communities online is people have trouble imagining the use-case that others might have. I used to get downvoted for enjoying Go so much when it came out. Sometimes I take it out and am just amazed at how inexpensive and compelling it was. I used to hang out in Bigscreen almost like VRC and just chat with others about movies and shit. It was a surprisingly good experience for the price because of how lightweight it was.
The Apple headset is in the opposite side of the price spectrum, but still has the issue of not fitting into what most people currently using VR want. If you can't imagine a use case for it, it's not for you. If reviews come out and it is genuinely a great professional tool that does a few things better than any other professional hardware, I am thrilled about that. I hope that happens, because then instead of a 3-4k laptop, my work can get me one of these. I could see the Apple Vision Pro being excellent for certain design applications, certain video workloads, and certain modeling workflows. I will wait for reviews on it, and I find it to be an interesting market entry.
Finally, I am interested to see if all this new hardware makes a dent on the open web. That's a whole separate discussion, but I think it's interesting to imagine the future of the web if the headsets have enough clarity that a ton of people use it that way.

I'm trying to extract caffeine from caffeine pills. It's mostly just for fun. My method so far goes like this:

1. Grind caffeine pills in coffee grinder.
   
2. Add powder to large jar with ample water and shake to dissolve all caffeine.
   
3. Wait for the solids to settle. Do a gravity filtration.
   
4. Boil off water until almost none is left (caffeine's solubility is 660g/L).
   
5. Recrystallize the hot solution. Vacuum filter while rinsing with cold water.

This method is not perfect. The main issue is that after shaking to dissolve the caffeine (step 2), I'm left with a cloudy solution. The majority of the particles settle out overnight but the solution remains cloudy, even after filtration. I want to minimize this because I'm afraid these suspended particles are ending up with the caffeine in the final product, and in the boiling step, a murky film develops which I'm assuming is due to these suspended particles, and it's annoying to deal with since I don't want to do a hot filtration because I'm working with a pretty small amount of caffeine.

Anyways. Any ideas how to minimize this cloudiness? I'd prefer not to use any harsh chemicals because I'm gonna be making drinks with the caffeine. Here's the pill's ingredients:

Anhydrous caffeine
Dicalcium phosphate
Microcrystalline cellulose
Vegetable magnesium stearate
Croscarmellose sodium

I suspect the microcrystalline cellulose is allowing an emulsion to form between water and itself or the magnesium stearate or something, but I may be wrong.

Going to try and keep this as short as possible.
I grew up with what I'd class as a strict Christian upbringing. I was taken out of school in year 5, was not allowed to attend secondary school as I would be corrupted by non Christians basically. I was Christian homeschooled until age 16. I was allowed no freinds.
I attended college when I was 16 for a few weeks but got taken out because I lied about my journey home from a college trip and got found out (went to a freinds for an hour said the train was late)
My aunt was like the "god" in my family. My mum listened to everything my aunt said because God told her. I got blamed for various things because "god told her" it was me. Yet my aunts daughter (a year older) could do nothing wrong. I couldn't look at my aunt as she intimidated me, she said this is because she has God within her so I couldn't make eye contact with her. She would come to my room and tell my mum and cousin she sensed evil spirits.
I suffered with mental health issues from age 11, self harmed, had body issues. I was seen as bad for my cousin (aunts daughter to be around) self harm = no seeing cousin, she was the only person I saw around my age group.
I liked rock music, but that was bad because it was of the devil. I liked wearing black but I wasn't allowed. I wasn't allowed a TV and was shamed for watching Harry Potter. I was only permitted to listen to Christian music (couldn't even listen to Mcfly for instance) and no films with swearing in.
I once convinced my mum to have a freind round that I made at a little group, she came round and we went into the porch, but because my aunt lived down the road and might see me and my freind, my mum told us to duck down.
My aunt constantly as a teen had me sit on the floor infront of her, my cousins, her husband, my mum and tell me how awful i was to my mum (i did hate her, if she even hugged me on the rare occasion it made me feel sick). I was so embarrassed.
I could do nothing right. I didn't rebel, i just suffered bad depression. People asked me why I didn't just rebel against them, but I felt completely trapped. My aunts sons were out doing drugs, sleeping about, the usual teen stuff, but they were never a problem, it was always me.
I feel as an adult now I suffer from many things because of my upbringing, one definitely being social anxiety and GAD. I'm tired of the past creeping up and effecting me in the present.

123Movies The Boogeyman (2023) Free: ‘The Boogeyman’ Crosses $850 Million Globally in 10 Days.

Welcome once again to my Riordan Retrospective. For those of you just joining the fun, this is my look back at the works of Rick Riordan. That means Percy Jackson, its sequels, and spin-offs. This is less of a formal review and more of a relaxed look back.
Last time, we finished our look back at The Trials of Apollowith a look back at The Tower of Nero. We thought that we’d said goodbye to the worlds of Rick Riordan. Little did we know that a new book was about to surface. As such, we’re taking a look back at Daughter of the Deep.
Ana Dakkar is about to finish her freshman year at Harding-Pencroft Academy. It is a five-year academy specializing in marine science. She, and her nineteen classmates, are about to begin their freshmen trials. Harding-Pencroft holds its students very high standards. However, before they can take off, the school is destroyed by a series of sonic torpedoes. The remaining students and professors of Harding-Pencroft regroup aboard their yacht the Varuna. Ana discovers several major revelations. Jules Verne’s novels 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and The Mysterious Island were based on actual events. Captain Nemo was indeed a real person, and Ana is his direct descendant. In fact, the whole point of Harding-Pencroft Academy is to safeguard Nemo’s legacy and technology. Their next stop is Lincoln Island, the final resting place of Nemo and the Nautilus. But danger lurks around every corner as the survivors of Harding-Pencroft are hunted by their old rivals: Land Academy.
Well, it looks like we’re back sooner than I expected. I thought we’d be back for that Irish Mythology book Rick said he was planning. However, that seems to have been put on the back-burner. Daughter of the Deep apparently has been a long time coming. Way back in 2009, Disney executives asked Rick what Disney property he would want to write a book based on. It could be anything he wanted. He chose 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, as the 1954 film adaptation is one of his favorite movies. Technically, Disney only owns the rights to the movie, not the original book. The original Verne novel has long since slipped into the public domain. I’m tempted to think that Rick was, at least somewhat, trolling the executives.
I actually went back and watched the 1954 movie adaptation of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. I agree with Rick here. The movie is, I must say, a truly underrated gem among live-action Disney films. In fact, I might even give it its own review at some point. Now, the movie does take some liberties with the source material. Though, personally, I’d say that was to its benefit, as it made for a more engaging story that worked better in film. Verne was known for doing a lot of research with his novels, and often devoted entire paragraphs to explaining the science in detail. Unfortunately, this does make for a rather dry reading experience. I’ve heard Verne works better in the original French, but that is a language I do not speak. Amusingly, students at Harding-Pencroft are required to read 20,000 Leagues Under the Seaand The Mysterious Island. Ana found them both to be a bit dry for her taste. I myself enjoyed The Mysterious Islandslightly more than 20,000 Leagues, but it still suffered from many of the same issues.
I’ve heard a few people wonder what it might be like if Rick Riordan were to write a science fiction novel. Well, we now have our answer. We know more about the surface of the Moon than we do our own deep oceans. Twelve people have walked on the surface of the Moon, but only two have ever been to the bottom of the Marianas Trench. Ocean-based science fiction is still comparatively rare compared to space-based or terrestrial-based science fiction. So, I’m glad to see that Daughter of the Deep tapped into some of the vast potential of ocean-based science fiction.
Now, I should probably clarify that Daughter of the Deep is set outside of the Riordanverse. Rick has confirmed that it takes place in its own self-contained world. So, don’t expect to see any cameos from Percy, Annabeth, or any other Riordanverse characters. Still, it is similar enough in terms of style to a typical Riordanverse novel, and thus, I’ve chosen to include it as part of the retrospective.
Speaking of style, let’s begin there. Rick has said he took a film writing course before he wrote Daughter of the Deep. That is very apparent in how the prose itself is written. It reads very much like a movie script. The narration is presented in first-person present tense. This helps add to the sense of action and urgency as the plot movies along. The pacing also feels very much like what you might find in a movie. We got a lot of action scenes in quick succession. We get the usual info dumps, but we don’t really take as much time for introspection. As we’ll discuss a bit later, this lack of introspection was very much to the book’s detriment. I’m willing to bet that all this is very much by design. Daughter of the Deep is being adapted into a movie on Disney+. In fact, the movie was announced even before the book came out. So, it certainly feels like Rick wrote Daughter of the Deep with an eye towards the movie adaption.
I would have liked if we had gotten to explore Harding-Pencroft Academy a bit more before it got destroyed. What brief glimpses we do see are utterly fascinating. The students are all decided into four different houses based on their area of study. Yeah, they’ve heard all the Harry Potter jokes plenty of times. Though, personally, when I saw the initials HP in an ocean-themed book, I briefly wondered if Rick Riordan was going to tackle the Lovecraft Mythos. Back on topic, the houses are Dolphin, Shark, Cephalopod, and Orca. Dolphin focuses on communications, exploration, cryptography, and counterintelligence. Shark handles command, combat, weapons systems, logistics. Cephalopod deals with engineering, applied mechanics, innovation, and defensive systems. Orca is all about medicine, psychology, education, marine biology, and communal memory. If you’re wondering about that last one, it basically means the history of Harding-Pencroft and Captain Nemo.
One of the things I appreciated was that each of the four main characters is from a different house. One of my gripes about Harry Potter is that pretty much all the important characters come from Gryffindor. Well, unless they’re a villain, and come from Slytherin. Ravenclaw had Luna and Cho, I guess, but Hufflepuff got the short end of the stick for sure. Getting back on track, having the four main protagonists of Daughter of the Deep be from different houses provided a theme that everyone has something unique to bring to the table. You can also see it as advocating for multiculturalism, but without being preachy about it. However, I do have on criticism. House Orca needed a better name. Orcas are a type of dolphin, the largest, in fact. We’ve got representatives for mammals, fish, and mollusks. How’s about giving some love to the reptiles? Personally, I would have named them House Sea Turtle instead. Or failing that, show some love to the echinoderms, and name them House Seastar. House Sea Cucumber would also work. Don’t give me that look! Sea cucumbers are noble animals and wonders of nature.
I do wish that we’d gotten to see more of Harding-Pencroft before it was destroyed. What brief glimpses we do get are utterly fascinating. As you might expect, they have quite an expansive aquarium full marine creatures. Upperclassmen train in submarine simulations using full-size mock-up submarines submerged in deep pools. However, the most fascinating class is one where students get to consider, and theorize, about the ways technology and science might have developed had history gone differently. As a major fan of alternate history I have but one thing to say: sign me up now! Well, its actually there as a way to slowly ease the students into learning the truth about Captain Nemo and his inventions. Still, sounds like a very fun class to take. I also liked how the various sections of the school are named after famous ocean explorers. There’s one part named after the Chinese navigator Zheng He, and one named after the polar explorer Ernest Shackleton.
I thought all of the diving scenes were particularly well-written. Rick Riordan has a true passion for scuba diving. This really shines through during the diving scenes. I also really like how the diving suits all use jet-propulsion that mimics the siphons of cephalopods. That was a really creative touch.
Okay, let’s talk about the characters. Ana is the protagonist, but I want to save her for last. We’ll start with her roommates, and best friends, Nelinha and Ester. Nelinha da Silva grew up in an orphanage in Rio de Janeiro, but got to attend Harding-Pencroft on a scholarship. She’s also the closest the series gets to referencing Percy Jackson and the Olympians. I can best describe Nelinha as what would happen if Charles Beckendorf and Silena Beauregard were to have a kid. And, you know, if they were still alive. She’s a complete mechanical genius, and geeks out over machines and engine parts. She’s a member of House Cephalopod, naturally. However, she is also obsessed with fashion, and always makes sure to look her best at all times. Nelinha doesn’t just pack outfits, she packs entire wardrobes.
One of my prior complaints about Rick Riordan is that he only seems to know how to write one type of female character. Namely, he seems to believe that being a strong female character means being a tomboy who hates all things girly. So, it was nice to see Nelinha as a course correction on that front. Nelinha being from Brazil is likely a nod to how popular Rick Riordan’s books are in Brazil. So, I’m sure Brazilian fans were excited to finally get a Brazilian main character.
On the flipside, we also get Ester Harding. She’s a member of House Orca. She is a blood relative of one of the founders of Harding-Pencroft. She is also the first autistic character in a Rick Riordan book. I’m still bitter about how he wrote a Muslims character before he wrote an autistic character. In the Riordanverse, anyone can be a demigod, unless you’re autistic, it would seem. I had high hopes for Ester. You don’t see autistic girls too often in the media. Riordan has said that he got sensitivity readers to help him with writing characters from different cultural backgrounds. However, it would seem none of them offered insight into autistic people. It almost feels like Riordan watched a couple episodes of The Good Doctor and was like “I got this!” You know those TikTok clips of that guy having a temper tantrum while shouting “I am a surgeon!” Yeah, that’s The Good Doctor. It was another show I had high hopes for, but fell back on stereotyping autistic people. Don’t get me started on my problems with The Good Doctor, we’ll be here all day.
Anyway, Ester displays a number of stereotypical traits. She yo-yos between being basically non-verbal, and shouting at the top of her lungs. She does this all in a robotic monotone voice. In contrast to Nelinha, Ester has basically no fashion sense, and seems to be going for the long-lost daughter of Albert Einstein look. Ester also doesn’t have much in the way of common sense, and though it never comes up, she’s probably Jewish. Not too many gentiles name Ester. She’s got an excellent memory, to the point of being almost eidetic, but that’s somewhat accurate. Well, maybe not eidetic, but most autistic people do often have amazing memories. How do you think I’m about to write these retrospectives?
Ana briefly remarks about how some people claim that autistic people can’t feel love or other emotions, and that Ester proves this isn’t true, due to how empathetic she is. Again, this is true, as autistic people can be quite empathetic. Though, I can’t help but wonder if Disney specially made Rick insert that line to cover their asses. See, this isn’t the first time Disney has tackled autism. There was an episode of Girl Meets World about how we should all be nice to autistic people. All well and good, but they also claim that autistic people are incapable of experiencing emotions, including love.
Gemini Twain has been assigned as Ana’s bodyguard. He’s a no-nonsense member of House Shark. He’s also a member of the Church of Jesus Christ and Latter Day Saints. This is certainly an interesting choice, as Gemini is also Black. Historically, Mormons haven’t exactly gotten along well with Black people. Or Native Americans, or Polynesians, or…well, pretty much anybody who isn’t White. The most infamous instance was when Mormon schools refused to desegregate. The American government threatened to revoke their tax exemption status, but wouldn’t you know it, Mormon God rather conveniently changed his mind about Black people. Though, Gemini’s faith doesn’t really come up that much. He doesn’t like swearing or taking the lord’s name in vein, and he mentions his grandma raised him and his brother in the LDS church, but that’s about it. Well, he did get into a minor scuffle with Nelinha. Gemini’s brother went on his mission trip to Brazil, and Gemini assumed Nelinha would know his brother, because she’s from Brazil.
Well, nice touch having one of the non-White characters be flawed enough to be accidentally racist. I remember back in The Hammer of Thor retrospective when I said, paraphrased, “A Muslim demigod? What’s next, a Mormon demigod?” I have on occasion wondered if Rick Riordan reads these retrospectives. Probably a long shot, but you never know.
Technically, there is a fifth main character: the Nautilusitself. It took until about halfway through the book before the Nautilus showed up. Yeah, this book has some pacing issues. The Nautilus has what can best be described as an artificial intelligence system. Also, apparently it also includes some organic components. As you might imagine, it is extremely untrustworthy of anyone who isn’t a blood relative of Prince Dakkar, aka Captain Nemo. So, Ana’s biometrics are key to unlocking the Nautilus.
Unfortunately, the Nautilus also highlights one of the issues I had with the book. Apparently, every major invention of the 20th Century was a result of Harding-Pencroft discreetly releasing them to the public. That, or Land Institute stealing them. This caused Daughter of the Deep to evoke the Great Man Theory of History. The theory goes that society gets stuck in ruts until a great man, and it’s always a man, shakes up the status quo and moves the world forward. This view has largely fallen out of favor with mainstream historians. Most historians emphasis how the changes were put into motion, often by complex chains of influences, long before the supposedly great men came about.
You do kind of get this with the main Riordanverse, where pretty much anyone who did anything was either a demigod or a magician. However, that was softened by just how many demigods and magicians there were throughout history. So, it felt more like a team-effort. By contrast, Daughter of the Deep gave us a single scientific übermensch who, apparently, leapfrogged from steam-power to cold fusion reactors. Now, granted, this is also true of Nemo in 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Still, maybe Rick shouldn’t have depicted Nemo in such a lock, stock, and barrel sort of way.
And that segues into my next point. Harding-Pencroft is deathly afraid of letting the general public get access to Nemo’s technology. They only release technology sparingly, and only when they feel humanity has earned it. Uh, and what metric do they use to determine how worthy humanity is? Beats me, the book offers no details. The adults all make a big deal about how corporations would try to monopolize Nemo’s technology, but nobody ever suggests releasing it as open-source tech. Well, I know the real reason for that. There’s no way that Disney, the poster boy for copyright abuse, is going to be advocating for open-source. A particularly facepalm worthy moment is that fact that Harding-Pencroft refuses to release cold fusion technology…despite climate change being a serious issue! The book would have you believe Harding-Pencroft are the good guys. However, I’m tempted to think Land Institute had a point about Harding-Pencroft being corrupt and selfish.
Hey, wait a minute. Harding-Pencroft is a secretive organization that is very selective of its membership. It trains its students so that, effectively, they’re cut-off from the outside world. They indoctrinate their students from a young age into their views. They have charismatic leaders and founders. Yikes, I hope the cafeteria never served Kool-Aid! Harding-Pencroft is a cult!
It would seem that Harding-Pencroft has something akin to the Prime Detective from Star Trek. There has been a lot of debate about the morality of the Prime Detective. The main thinking seems to be don’t give advanced weaponry to civilizations that aren’t morally mature. The Original Seriesalso says that it is okay to break the Prime Directive if a planet is in imminent danger. Contrast this with Next Generation, where one episode has Captain Picard dithering about if he should save a planet, even if it break the Prime Directive. Of course, the worst offender was Voyager. It had an episode where the moral was, basically, don’t save a baby trapped in a burning car, or else the baby will grow-up to be Hitler. Yeah, the Prime Directive kind of devolved into an immoral religious dogma as Star Trek went on.
Point is, Harding-Pencroft’s Prime Directive seems to lean towards that of the later Star Trek entries. Apparently, screw the planet, we need to keep the tech away from corporations! The irony of Disney railing against corporations is so thick you can practically cut it with a machete. Also, if the concern is that the corporations would hoard stuff like the cure for cancer, well, how’s that any different than what Harding-Pencroft is doing?
Much is made about how Ana must choose to reconcile both the good and the bad of Nemo’s legacy. However, nothing really comes of this. We don’t see her seriously debate or challenge Harding-Pencroft and Land Institute’s views of Nemo. In fact, she gets indoctrinated into Harding-Pencroft’s views pretty quickly. It would have been a great opportunity to show Nemo’s complexity, not just tell us about it. How many innocent lives did he take in his quest for vengeance? Should he have shared his technology with the oppressed peoples chafing under the yoke of colonialism? Is it possible that Land Institute has some valid points, and that Harding-Pencroft has lost its way? All excellent questions that sadly go unanswered.
As for why that is, it ties into the biggest problem I have with Daughter of the Deep. Overall, it feels like merely the novelization of the yet to be produced movie. I was hoping that the novel would be able to stand on its own merits. However, Riordan clearly wrote it so that the adoption process would be streamlined. Debating ethics might not translate to film. Though, it could work in the hands of a competent scriptwriter.
I feel this streamlining was ultimately to the novel’s determent. I certainly didn’t hate Daughter of the Deep. It had plenty of the action and adventure you’d expect from a Rick Riordan novel. However, for every thing I liked, there was almost always something else I didn’t like. It is ironic that Rick claims he spent years working on Daughter of the Deep. It overall feels like it was yanked out of the oven before it had a chance to bake properly. Then again, he also claims to have gotten the idea for Magnus Chase before he wrote Percy Jackson, and look how that turned out.
The audiobook is narrated by Soneela Nankani. She’s the narrator for the Aru Shah audiobooks. Personally, I wasn’t too thrilled when I saw that Soneela would be narrating. However, she gave a fairly decent performance. She voiced Ester in a rather stereotypical way, like she was imitating Sean from The Good Doctor, but that was the only true sour note. Speaking of music, the audiobook is filled with music. There’s lots of musical cues throughout the audiobook. Scenes of wonder and whimsy have inspirational music, action scenes have exciting music. There’s a scene where Ana plays a pipe organ aboard the Nautilus, and we actually get to hear it. I thought that was a really nice touch.
Now, let’s analyze the cover. This is a nice looking cover. The undersea landscape is bright and vibrant. We see Ana and Gemini in their divining suits. Their faces are clear and unobscured. The Rick Riordan Presents books goes with this approach as well. Something about it being important for minority kids to see themselves clearly represented on book covers. We also see the Nautilus in the background, along with a giant octopus.
So, Daughter of the Deep has a lot of potential, and I certainly wouldn’t mind a sequel. However, there’s a lot of room for improvement. It needed to stand on its own merits, not just be the dry run for the movie script. Still, it's lightyears better than our next port of call. Next time, we’re tackling The Sun and The Star. The claws are coming out, and I’m prepared to fully eviscerate Mark Oshiro’s glorified self-insert fanfic.

Like many others, I'm searching for a new hobby.
I would like something where I can create (preferably something visual) and share to my friend/family/internet. I never had social media, and create one for a hobby can be a cool experience.

What I'm doing for now :
- Video Games : My favorite hobby, but it cost me some money, so I don't want something too expensive
- Films : I just started to watch films, I have an ok 4k TV but it's ok for me, and a Sony BDP-S3700, it's not the best but I am fine with this and I don't want to spend more for now. As I buy a lot of my blu ray in second hand, this hobby is pretty cheap (Until I upgrade my TV/Audio/armchair)
- Guitar : I play guitar since 11 year and I am a little bit bothered to play now. Sometimes I grab my guitar and play a little bit. But I think it's the end of an era and I don't want to do music anymore (Except singing, I love it but I live in an appartment with poor sound insulation, and as a metal/rock/jazz singer who need to scream sometimes, I can't do it for now)
- Bike :I love it but it's especially to stay healthy, I already have anything I need and don't want new stuff

Some ideas I have :
- Drawing : It's cheap to start, can create really cool stuff and share on social media. I don't know if I want spend months/years before doing beautiful draws. (I have ADHD, I can be bored really quick unfortunately)
- Toy Photography : This one have ALL my interest, but it seems to be really expensive. I don't have camera, and my phone is a cheap one with very bad camera. I need lens, lights, and I don't have any toys. Good toys are really expensive too, I'm afraid of not having fun if I take photos with cheap camera and ugly toys.
- Toys (Model) to assemble/paint : Can be really expensive too, but I can pair it with toy photography. I am not into Gundam, but some "Gunpla" seems really cool.

Some restrictions I have :
- I live in an appartment, so I can't do a lot of stuff outside. My mom have a house with a garden at 12km (I do it with my bike, I don't have car), so I can do things at her home, but I think I would sometimes be lazy to go to her house.
- I don't have a lot of money, but a lot of free time as I work only 24h per weeks. It's a life choice I had made, I prefer to have a lot of free time instead of a lot of money but no time to enjoy. I don't know if I am ready to do this, but maybe I can sell my best guitar (worth 950€ new)

CRESCENT CITY, CIRCA 2064.
The city was almost unknown at the start of the century. It didn't have the vibe of Seattle's Boeing SeaTac, or the overwhelming might of NorCal's "Silicon Valley." In fact, it wasn't much of a city at all. But, after decades of investment, its become a small but incredibly influential force on the American West Coast.
It was Crescent City's peculiar legal situation which made it so attractive to industry. Due to reforms in the late 2030s, the Government had stewardship over a huge swath of land as "a sovereign territory within Northern California." Ironically, that same wave of reform in NorCal also pushed corporate interests to search for less restrictive jurisdictions.
At any rate, an extremely lucrative deal was hashed out with the governmental leadership: a special economic zone in Crescent City's port, heavily dominated by corporate interests. In exchange, an exorbitant yearly rent payment would be distributed to the city’s council, and corporate forces (they claimed) would help police on the remaining sections of the city’s land. NorCal, happy for the excuse to give the companies their own neoliberal playground, turned a blind eye to the whole affair. Cyberlibertarians flocked to the city for its lax laws on body-modding, drugs, guns, gambling and prostitution. Companies flocked to the city for tax purposes.
In a matter of years, undeveloped coastline became choked with skyscrapers. Illegal squatter communities formed in the barren, native highlands, away from the pressing control of the city. However, Corporate forces still regularly arrive to burn down encampments, and wasteland-dwelling rebels ride through city streets on jeeps or bikes. The city itself is a patchwork of high-rise complexes and immigrant communities, carved into expansive "corporate parks" created by rival factions. Heavyweights like Shuzuoka, Bryer-Stanley, and Nwajiuba can all be found there.
The so called “Red Zone” was a pleasure district, located in the heart of Crescent City’s corporate wonderland. It had sprung up in the late 2050’s, a new development that promised a world of pleasure, hedonism, and stress relief. New buildings, a monorail link to the Metro, it had been the hot, new development. It was the go-to place in town to get fucked up, and get fucked. Bars, body-modding clinics, tattoo parlours, strip clubs, and brothels were the norm, and it had a reputation for the particularly wacky and weird. It was also where I lived and worked.
The establishment I was working in was called Bloom, owned by the elegant and elusive Lady Sapphire, a former sex worker herself, who’s hard work had earned her an empire of debauchery. And she loved it that way. Her marketing has lots of Georgia-O'Keefe-style suggestive flowers, but in neon. Lady Sapphire’s Bloom was one multi-story building. Strip club on the ground floor and basement, the bar, club and discotheque above that, photoshoot and private rooms upstairs, and actual living quarters on the top floor. Bloom is a jack-of-all-trades: stripclub, porn studio, a tight-knit community for the women who work inside it. Everyone gets a vote and everyone decides on pay... but everyone knows Lady Sapphire is really the one in charge.
I worked there as a security guard, meaning I was always on the front line of wacky and weird. Out of everyone in the city, why did Bloom hire me as security? To quote Lady Sapphire: “One, you can take a punch. Two, you're not an asshole. Three... Indy thought you were cute."
I’d gotten the job when I’d gone to the Bloom with a friend after losing a bet. Supposedly it was a "consolation prize." Really, it was just an excuse for him to see some tits. One of the other patrons had gotten rough with one of the working girls, Indy. I didn't even have to think about it: I stood up to him, and when it escalated, I beat the ever-loving crap out of him. Lady Sapphire likes to say I "saved the guards some ammo" that day, and she wasn't kidding: when I had looked up, a guard already had a loaded shotgun in hand. Some of the girls patched me up and just like that, I was hired by Bloom as a bouncer...and more, if I was up for it.

The Metro ride is packed today: office drones in their starched collars and pants, studiously avoiding eye contact with anyone. Early birds in astonishingly spiky and skimpy party-wear.
The monorail rumbles four stories off the ground. A few tourists gawk at the windows, staring down at the huge, flashing billboards that run down East Avenue. It was intentional, Indy ahd explained one night, excitedly recounting a holovideo she watched on the city's urban planning. The rail lines got laid down first, so the corps could have stuck it right in the middle of the street if they wanted. But they wanted a monorail, just for people to gawk at the view. Increase the ad-value.
I stop at three or four different stations along the way. More partygoers. A homeless man with a long, empty face, trying to shush the yapping Chihuahua in his arms. One of the office drones thinks she's being real stealthy as she gives her coworker an over-the-pants handjob.
I reach my stop and exit into the Red Zone. Partygoers flood out onto the streets. Several of them stop to listen to a Mariachi band playing. The lead singer clearly has some kind of augmentation: he sounds like he's singing three or four notes at the same time, belting out a Spanish ballad.
Bloom is around the corner--four stories tall, plus a basement, with an animation of a huge neon flower opening and closing luxuriously. The smell of spices drifts to me from the kebab stand across the street. I’ve got two hours before peak time, when I’ll properly need to be on the clubfloor. Been working here two or three months, and I know the gig pretty well by now.
The monorail journey seemed to always be different, and yet always the same. Something was always going on, it was never the same faces, but it had become so routine that it all felt like an extension of the same ride. I rubbed my hands as I left the station, my hot breath fogging in the air. How the fuck did these people not freeze to death? Working in this district, I saw more tits, cocks and pussies in a half hour commute that any normal person would see in their life. But then, that’s the nature of the district that I found myself in. This was a place of pleasure; degeneracy, debauchery, and good old fashioned hedonism to its core.
I push past the queue of early birds, knocking at the door and getting greeted in by the previous shift, my thick, knee-length Black coat flowing behind me as I walked. I adjust my armour weave under my shirt, and check the handgun strapped to my thigh. If some fucker tried me, they’d better go for the head. It was warm inside, gentle synthy music drifting in the entrance hall, soft neon lights around. All flowers opening their petals in an almost far-too-obvious suggestive way. I catch a couple of the girls as I head to the lower security office to clock in. They smile flirtatiously, exactly as they always did. I couldn’t fault them or be mad. It WAS their job after all.
Inside the office was Garrett. The oldest, meanest, toughest son of a bitch the district had. You fucked around with Garrett, and you found the fuck out. Normally in an irreversible kind of way. I mean, MAYBE if you could afford cyberware, maybe it would fix it.
Maybe.
“Elias.” He grunts simply. I nod. “Garrett.” I swear the only time I heard this guy say more than one word was when he talked to Lady Sapphire. Then it would be like 5 words. At maximum. I clock in and turn to him. “Am I on cams, doors, or patrol tonight?” I ask. “Patrol.” He says again. I purse my lips. Happy fella, weren’t we?
“Alright. You probably know already but I think the vending machine guy is due tonight. And have you seen Indy? She had a surprise for me, she says.” He raised an eyebrow. “Nope.” He replied. I pat his shoulder and wink. “Helpful as always buddy. See you on the floor.” He slaps my hand away, and I chuckle as I walk out.
Patrol. Right. I start climbing to the second floor. I hear the screams of delight as the doors open downstairs and I roll my eyes. My voice is deep under my breath.
“Let the fun begin.”

Well, that might be the longest stream of semi-coherent consciousness I’ve managed to get into one post. If you’ve made it this far, well done for getting through it. Hopefully you’re the kind of person I’m looking for, and hopefully the type to get the vibes and themes for what I want to play. Those who get it, get it!
Theme-wise, this is my rendition of the now classic cyberpunk genre. Corporate and liberal wonderland, gritty, drugs, body mods, alcohol, and sex galore. Everything turned up to 11, and maybe some more after that.
As eluded to in the wall of text above (sorry, I get carried away sometimes), I’m playing Elias. Elias is a young-ish guy in his 20’s, hired on the spot by one of the establishments in the pleasure district after an “incident” while he was visiting. He caught the attention of the owner, Lady Sapphire, the guards, and Indy, the girl working there that he aided.
For appearance, he’s a big guy. Standing at 6’3 with a muscular and athletic body, he is definitely a presence in person. He has jet black hair and facial hair, both kept short. Blue eyes, a wonder to look into (or so he claims he’s told). Most often wearing a long black coat and matching trousers and boots, with armour-weave underneath. In short, he looks like a more handsome version of the typical futuristic security guard. He talks shit, takes shit, and gives shit.
And what about you? Well, I’m open to you playing just about anyone that you wish! Will you play as one of Bloom's patrons, a woman with cash to burn, neon hair, and a will to let yourself free? Are you a regular, or here for the first time and guided by reputation? Will you play one of the girl's working there, a woman under my protection? Are you new or established? Have we met, spoken, even hooked up already? Do you like me or not? You could be Indy, the girl I saved the day I was hired. How has our relationship changed? Do you feel like you owe me, or that I owe you? Are you even still working there? Or maybe you want to step into the shoes of Lady Sapphire, the gorgeous empress at the top of it all. Do you want to thank me for a job well done? Offer me promotion as a personal guard? Or do you just like to fuck staff members now and then? I will leave how you look and what your personality is open to interpretation, as I feel it will be best for you to really make the character your own!
Kink-wise, I am quite open. Anything not explicitly listed in my limits below should be able to be worked in, provided you ask me about it. That being said, here are some of my favourites: Domination, cheating, seduction/dirty talk, sexy outfits/lingerie, rough sex, risky sex, creampies, giving and receiving oral, being deepthroated, face fucking, face sitting, making out, spit, impact play, anal, light restraints, and threesomes (FFM).

Now, down the more boring admin stuff. This post took quite a lot of effort to write, and so I would really appreciate a creative and detailed response from you, if you are interested. I'm not asking for you to write a novella for a response, or even to match me, but one paragraph just saying you like the idea or "I want to play" just won't cut it for me, I'm afraid. Don't rush a response to grab my attention, as long as this is up, I'm still looking for someone to play with. You're far more likely to catch my attention if you really show me that you're interested! I typically write between 2 and 5 paragraphs in normal messages, and at the very least aim to get at least one response out per day, but I am normally better than that. I am also located in GMT timezone, and while I am open to talking to people from any timezone, please understand that I may not always be around. I try to communicate when I won't be around for a little while. I adore creativity and detail, even if it's weird or out there. In other words, go for it and ask me!
