2023.06.06 17:59 itgoestoeleven Weekday lunch spot on Church St with covered outdoor seating?

I'm going to be up in Burlington for the day tomorrow chaperoning a school trip, and I'm looking for a place to grab lunch while the kids are off on their own. I'm COVID-cautious, so I'm ideally looking for someplace that does outdoor seating that's covered in case of rain. Any recommendations? Thanks!

2023.06.06 17:57 Annual_Ad_1536 There is no reason to take a vaccine in the current situation.

Vaccines are proven and effective health interventions for a variety of diseases. They often have side effects, sometimes resulting in death, but this is true of almost every medical intervention.
What I often see is that people opposing mass vaccination programs will get really wrapped up in whether or not the vaccine itself was intentionally rushed, is a bad medication, or some other reason that directly relates to its chemistry that means we shouldn't take it.
That's not actually the reason the vast majority of the time that an intervention should not be used. The reasons are usually logistical or public health related.
For instance, in the case of a widespread, rapidly developing global event like COVID, we were fairly ignorant of the nature of the disease vector, its behavior, or where it came from. At the same time we were very busy focusing on response initiatives in our own countries, and could not focus on what was going on with other countries and how they might strategically use the situation to their own advantage.
In this context, US intelligence services were severely compromised, tons of intelligence workers around the world were lost.
In this case of a perfectly informed government, it would be reasonable to begin a vaccination program like the Moderna and Pfizer Vaccine initiatives, however, the realistic thing is to take the government at face value. The evidence indicates that they had no way of effectives auditing supply chains, determining whether or not the vaccine was a bioweapon and there was active sabotage of pharmaceuticals, or that all the vaccines could be safely distributed without being compromised.
This is especially concerning at a time when the military is experimenting with biotechnology and nanotechnology devices to enhance soldier's performance in combat, because that means other militaries are likely to be doing so as well, with less regulations.
The responsible approach would have been to build a comprehensive social distancing strategy to essentially transform cities so that they could accommodate a more hybrid lifestyle. Rural areas would have had no reason to change fundamentally because they already lack density. Had we not wasted billions on masks and an accelerated vaccine research program (the results of which are borderline unusable now since the studies were conducted too quickly), we could have actually protected school systems and funded useful new initiatives, along with secured food distribution and supply chains for the next pandemic.
However, in the age we're in now, deepfakes can be relativity easily made, massive amounts of research literature can be fake, various supply chains can still be compromised and there exists the technology to, through a single injection, change and manipulate your behavior from a distance. In this context, there is no reason to use any injected or even any oral vaccine unless absolutely necessary.

2023.06.06 17:45 aninejanine I'm afraid that I won't do well as an engineer.

TW: mentions of self-harm
Hello everyone. I'm a BSCE student from the Philippines, I'm afraid that I won't be 'site-ready' when I graduate. To give you guys some background, our country doesn't have the best educational system, and my current uni doesn't really promote a healthy school-life balance for the students. We have a lot of profs who never show up to lectures, their reason is that they feel lazy and we are supposed to know the topic beforehand without even teaching it to us, then they'd proceed to give us difficult assessment tasks expecting us to ace it. One professor even threatened us to not report them to the Dean of the school else we would automatically fail, so they are aware of what they lack but they don't realize their responsibility to us. The units that we were required to take for every sem are 25+ and classes start as early as 7:30 A.M. and some classes end as late as 9:00 P.M. There were cases where a lot of us exhibited symptoms of COVID but our department took a blind eye, I had to take an exam with fever and a congested nose and surprise surprise, I got a low score.
They basically force us to burn out yet after all of the hard work we were given no rewards. I've always gaslighted myself into thinking that maybe I'm not studying hard enough or I'm not trying hard enough, but I've sacrificed a lot, I've sacrificed sleep, my healthy eating habit (there were times I only ate instant coffee, and noodles for a week), enjoying special occasions and holidays, my social life and even my passion for arts. I know that I'm not super smart but I make that up by studying hard yet I feel like I'm always running out of time to study because there's an assessment every week (we basically have a high school type of schedule and there's an instance where we have to take quizzes and exams of different courses under a week).
I felt like I'm drowning with all of the overwhelming pressure that is put on me. It comes to a point where I feel guilty for taking a rest, and one instance where I'm studying while breaking down because I felt really exhausted, and yet I can't rest. I blamed myself for everything because I saw some of my acquaintances that also took up BSCE in a different university are able to juggle school, work, and personal responsibilities. I felt weak because compared to them, I'm only focused on school and yet I'm still not doing well. I blamed myself for everything, it got to a point where I cut myself due to the pain of too much pressure from myself, the school, and my parents. I've been clean for 5 years, and it's a shame that I fell back to it just because the school decided that our life would be miserable.
I'm scared that I would be a terrible engineer due to the results of my performance at school. Now that I'm in my 4th year, It dawned on me how the school gave me a poor foundation on the concept of engineering. Our course on construction materials and testing was done online without any laboratory testing, we never experienced using a theodolite, and any laboratory we conducted was poorly explained and even told us to "fake the results" so we never know what is the standard. As of now, our university changed its rules that put students in a very difficult situation, a lot of the students would be delayed due to the new rules so a lot of us are either transferring or trying to voice out our concerns to the students who will stay in the university, to ensure that they won't be taken advantage by the school rules.

2023.06.06 17:32 Ashbin Virginia COVID Report for June 6, 2023

NEW COVID CASES STATEWIDE FOR JUNE 6, 2023 Case numbers are from the previous day unless indicated otherwise
Total new cases reported: 238 (was 433 over the weekend, 187 Fri, 124 Sat, 122 Sun) 7-day average of new cases: 210.28 (was 194.14 yesterday, +8.31%) Cases per 100,000 Population: 2.448 (was 2.26 yesterday) Figures and Percentages may be slightly rounded as needed
CURRENT POSITIVITY RATE CDC Region 3 7-Day Positivity Rate: 1.5%, (was 2.2% last update, -31.82%)
INTERPRETATION: 238 cases today, which is high for Monday numbers. Last Monday was only 125. This could be a bad week.
The 7-day case average (and case curve) went up over eight percent as last Monday's low number came out of the calculation, and our cases last week were all over 200+.
Our case average has not been this high since May 10th, and this is first time it has cracked 200 since May 15th (when it was on the way down). One day does not make a week, but it seems cases are slowly on the rise. Usually we have lower weekend and Monday numbers and we did not really get that this week.
From what I can gather more people are going to the hospital for COVID, but are maybe not being admitted or being discharged quickly. It's hard to tell exactly what is going on without the old VHHA data.
Side Notes TUBERCULOSIS (TB) appears to be overtaking Covid as the world's most deadly infectious disease.
Australia is now in it's 2nd-worst wave of the COVID era, with no peak in sight.
News is thin.
I'll have to wait until later today when VDH finishes their updates to a weekly report. Let's hope it does not get stuck or have errors. I know they are working on it but only some parts of it are currently done. Why they keep a note on the page that it will be updated by 10 am is beyond me. Remember their report only covers Sunday-Saturday of last week.
EXPLANATION OF FIGURES ABOVE
Total new cases reported: New COVID cases reported by VDH today.
7-day average of new cases: movement of case curve over the last 7-days
Cases per 100,000 population 7-day average (if known): within 100,000 people, how many were positive for COVID on a rolling 7-day cycle.
Region 3 7-Day Positivity Rate (if included): The last CDC Region 3 average percentage of PCR coronavirus tests performed that are positive. The lower the better.
Data from VDH, CDC
Edit: put in weekend breakdown

2023.06.06 17:32 Sure-Royal-1054 WATCH Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Online Free at Reddit

Sony Pictures! Here are options for downloading or watching Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse streaming the full movie online for free on 123movies & Reddit, including where to watch marvel's latest live-action adaptation movies at home. Is Spider-Verse 2 available to stream? Is watching Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse on Peacock, Disney Plus, HBO Max, Netflix or Amazon Prime? Yes, we have found an authentic streaming option/service.

If you’re like just about everyone else on the planet who saw Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse in 2018 and loved it, you’ve probably been waiting for the sequel. You won’t be waiting long, as Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is finally coming out.
After a grueling five-year-long wait, Marvel fans everywhere will finally be able to return to the animated multiverse with Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. The upcoming sequel's predecessor requires no explanation, as Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse not only ensnared audiences and critics alike but also caught a prestigious Oscar win with a Best Animated Feature award. With "New York's one and only Spider-Man," Miles Morales (Shameik Moore), now becoming a household name, fans of the first film eagerly awaited the day they could see young Miles swing into the Spider-Verse again.
Thankfully, the wait is almost finally over, as Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will return to screens soon. This time Miles will not only be reunited with Gwen Stacey (Hailee Steinfeld) and Peter B. Parker (Jake Johnson) but he'll also be introduced to an entire multiversal society of Spider-people created and led by a particularly pessimistic variant of Spider-Man 2099 (Oscar Isaac). Though some of the other variants in this secretive organization view Miles as a nuisance more than anything else, they'll have to learn to put those apprehensions aside if they hope to save the multiverse from an all-new terrifying threat. As the release date for the sequel to one of the most celebrated Spider-Man films ever made crawls closer and closer
Everyone's favorite web-slinger from an alternate dimension returns for a second theatrical outing. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse continues the multiverse-spanning adventures of Miles Morales (Shameik Moore), one of the youngest and newest iterations of Spider-Man in his home dimension. A year after the events of Into the Spider-Verse, Miles is introduced to the Spider-Society, an immense organization of different Spider-People who hail from countless alternate dimensions.
The much-anticipated Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is only one day away, and fans can’t wait to see the new adventures of Miles Morales. Once the Sony Pictures-produced movie ends its theatrical run, it will come to the most popular streamers, including Netflix and Disney Plus. But when is Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse coming to Netflix and Disney Plus? Here is precisely where and how you can watch Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse online.
When Is the Release Date for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse?
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse was one of the many films to get hit by a delay due to the COVID-19 pandemic, moving from its original date of April 8, 2022, to October 7, 2022. That's the date seen in the above trailer, but the film has since seen another significant delay since then. Now the film is officially set for release on June 2, 2023. Hopefully, we won't see another delay, but if it means getting a sequel that lives up to the sky-high heights of the original, we'll gladly wait.
Is Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse in Theaters?
Not only was Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse the subject of rave reviews, but it also pulled in some gargantuan levels of cash at the international box office, with a final tally that quadrupled the film's ninety-million dollar budget. With incredible success like that, it's only natural that Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse would also be taking advantage of a theatrical release. That is the case, as the upcoming film will be exclusively available in theaters when it premieres on June 2nd, 2023.
When is 'Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse' streaming?
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
The home distribution rights for Across the Spider-Verse are in a rather interesting place. In April 2021, it was reported that Sony Studios had signed a multiyear deal with both Netflix and Disney for shared streaming rights to Sony films coming out between 2022 and 2026. This deal includes Across the Spider-Verse as well as the third film in the series, Beyond the Spider-Verse, due out in March 2024.
As for releases like Across the Spider-Verse, the film will be available on Netflix with "first-pay-window-rights" for the first 18 months of its home media release. While it will not be streaming concurrently with its theatrical release, it will be available on Netflix following its theatrical run.
Some of the films are not currently available on the service because Sony has pre-existing partnerships with Starz, as that's where most of the absent films are available to stream. That is except for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which is instead only streaming on Fubo TV and FX Now.
For anyone else looking to watch the film as soon as possible, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will be released in theaters on June 2.
How to Watch Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
At the moment, you can watch Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse at your local theater. But like most movies these days, it should hit a streaming website in the near future.
Like its predecessor, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is a flick produced by multimedia conglomerate Disney. What's more, the production studio owns a number of other famous franchises, like the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Star Wars. Titles made under these umbrellas have both hit Disney+ sometime after arriving at the box office. Fans may also know the original Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is currently available to stream on the site as well. So, if the 2023 version follows the same pattern, folks will likely get to see Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse on Disney+ later this year too.
As for an exact release date for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, that's more complicated. Most movies produced by Disney often go to its streamer site within three months after debuting in theaters, like the most recent Marvel film Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. If this is the case for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, it will probably drop in late August 2023 or sometime near Labor Day in early September.
When the time comes for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse to splash onto Disney+ though, make sure you're all prepared to watch it. If you don't have access yet, you can opt into a 30-day free trial before choosing a plan that start at $7.99 per month or $79.99 per year. After your account is all set, click on the title page on Disney+'s official website or the Disney+ app.
As you wait for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse to hit the streamer, why don't you watch the animated version and its sequel Spider-Man: into the Spider-Verse? Or if you want to immerse yourself in another live-action version, click on the 2019 ABC TV special Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Live!. Enjoy!
Where To Watch Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Online:
As of now, the only way to watch Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is to head out to a movie theater when it premieres on June 2, 2023. You can find a local showing on Fandango.
Watch Now: Spider-Verse (2023) Movie Online Free
Otherwise, you’ll just have to wait for it to become available to rent or purchase on digital platforms like Amazon, Vudu, YouTube or Apple, or become available to stream on Disney+.
Is Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse coming to Netflix?
Yes, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is coming to Netflix approximately in December 2023.
In 2021, Sony and Netflix signed a five-year deal that gave the latter exclusive first-pay-window U.S. streaming rights for Sony Pictures titles after their theatrical and home entertainment windows. Fans can expect to watch Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse on Netflix six months after the film’s theatrical release, thus in December 2023. The date seems reasonable considering that Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse dropped on Netflix on June 26, 2019, six months after its U.S. release on December 14, 2018. The pay-one window usually begins about nine months after a film’s theatrical release, but it might start earlier in particular cases.

2023.06.06 17:28 Trolley-Dodger A Hope and A Prayer

While we await the outcome of the bidding process, I'm staring at a SRNE / SCLX portfolio that's down six figures and can't help but think how we ended up here. Sure, we can blame the shorts all we want, but it really comes down to piss poor management that got in over its head financially, rewarded themselves handsomely with massive pay packages as the company was bleeding money, spent lavishly on first class travel and Ritz Carlton stays when the company's cash predicament suggested that moderation would be more appropriate, acquired companies they could not integrate that distracted from their main thrust, lost a key arbitration case they couldn't afford to lose, pumped up Covid solutions that didn't deliver, and did a shit job of communicating with investors. They gambled with our investment irresponsibly and eroded billions of dollars in company value that was sacrificed by millions of small retail investors who couldn't afford to stick around. It's no wonder that shorts were attracted to this fiasco of a company! Those of us still invested in SRNE are here to the end because of the faith we have in the drug development pipeline, the bankruptcy court, and the team of experts assembled to save this company from itself. Sorrento needs a bailout via a buyout in order to survive. I'm a believer in the SRNE pipeline, but I have lost faith in Ji and his team in their ability to execute responsibly and prioritize shareholder value above their own personal gains. I can only wait, hope and pray for a White Knight to emerge in this bankruptcy case to save SRNE and my investment which is currently sunk at the bottom of a deep and dark hole. Good luck to us all!!!

2023.06.06 17:17 iamsalmanahmedk Concordium x Bank of Memories

The idea of Bank of Memories stems from deeply personal circumstances. When Iryna Savytska and Andrii Melanchik, now COO and Co-Founder of Bank of Memories, found out that Andrii’s mother had Parkinson's disease, they began to search for a trusted, convenient, and quick way to save memories and important information about her.
They found their answer in blockchain and founded Bank of Memories.
Despite huge external challenges, neither COVID-19 nor the outbreak of war could derail the project.
Concordium seeks partnerships with resilient projects that deliver value and real-world use cases, and we are thrilled to integrate our privacy and identity technology with Bank of Memories.

2023.06.06 17:02 TemporaryCity The Derrylin Fire

On 27th February 2018, Crystal Gossett, 45, also known as Denise Gossett, died at a fire at her rented three-bedroom bungalow on Molly Road, in Derrylin, a remote village in County Fermanagh in Northern Ireland.
Her son, Roman Gossett, 16, also known as Edward, died too, as did his sister, Sabrina Gossett, 19, also known as both Elektra and Diane, and Sabrina’s 16- or 18-month old daughter, known as Morgana or Morganna Gossett or Quinn. The English family had lived in the bungalow for over a year, having moved from Doncaster, England, and then Tralee in County Kerry in Ireland.
As black clouds billowed, Tommy Fee and two neighbours beat through a door and window to try to save the family. Fee was the landlord and still suffers flashbacks. As the emergency services arrived, another man was noticed standing outside. This was Daniel Sebastian Allen, also known as Samuel Quinn, who was at the time 27 and who lived with the family.
Today, Allen’s been convicted of the murders of the three youngest victims and the manslaughter of Denise. His original claim was that he was innocent, then that he lit the fire as part of a suicide pact was formed between him and the two adult women, and that the youngest two were already dead. On the day of the trial, he admitted guilt for the murder of the three youngest. The case for a suicide pact with Denise, at least, was “acceptable to the prosecution.” Due to the guilty pleas, the prepared evidence was not heard.
The family are survived by Samantha, the older sister of Edward and Diane, who lived in Birmingham, England with her husband James Dickens. Other than James or the landlord, nobody seems to have known those who died.
Although this case is now closed, so many questions remain. Why did it take so long to establish the names of the victims? Why was Allen living with them? What grounds are there for a suicide pact being acceptable? Why does Allen’s fake surname align with one of the names of the baby, when the landlord refers to Denise as “the partner” in an interview? What was actually happening behind closed doors in this remote village?

2023.06.06 17:00 No_Age6966 The right school for 8 year old in MA

I need advice/feedback/support from other ASD parents.
My 8 year old son just received an ASD diagnosis. He's had an ADHD diagnosis since he was 3 years old, but we've also had several near-misses with ASD diagnoses in the past, so it's not really a surprise. He doesn't have a lot of the more stereotypical visible aspects of ASD, but his intensity and rigidity and temper are extreme and always have been. He's extremely bright (total wiz at chess) but struggles to learn in traditional classroom settings without constant adult support to stay on task (and even then...)
Kindergarten was a nightmare because he was in a general ed classroom and the (wealthy) school district effectively bubble-wrapped him with services - they assigned him a 1:1 aide and basically had him complete all of his work outside of the classroom with the special educator so he didn't bother the other kids or the teacher (it was COVID year, so I didn't push back as much as I now wish I had). I bought a house just to move to a different district because I felt so strongly the school was not a good fit for him at all. The new school department is wonderful, and he's been in a co-taught special ed/ general ed classroom for 1st and 2nd grade with great success. I have had very positive experiences with their current K-5 school.
His IEP review this spring included the request by the school to eliminate his 1:1 aide. I understand their reasoning, respect the data shows he's doing much better, but I'm especially nervous for next year as he also will be moving to a general ed classroom (there is no more co-taught options for 3rd grade in the district). He's doing so much better with behavior in the classroom, and has gained a lot of self confidence, but I worry intensely that without the 1:1 aide AND the special educator in the classroom, we're going to have a rough year next year. I don't feel like I have much choice in either, honestly.
Add in an additional complication - while I own the house in that district, we have effectively unofficially moved in with my boyfriend and his kids across state lines. My parents will be living in that house this coming year. We now reside in Lakeville, MA, but we continue to commute each day 40 minutes to school. In order to legally move, I would need to petition the court for the right to move out of state - my kids' father is not local and chooses not to be an actively engaged parent (he speaks to them 1-2x per month on videochat, and has them visit him maybe 1-2x per year at most). Still, it would re-open the custody & child support case and have to transfer all of that to a new state jurisdiction.
For the upcoming school year, I've decided to continue with the status quo because the school is working well for my kids - this means continue the 40 minute commute each way so my kids can continue in the same school. Even though the switch to general ed classroom is worrisome, I do have faith in that school leadership and the staff there to be partners in helping my son have a positive experience and keep learning.
However, with the new ASD diagnosis, I also need to start thinking about my future choices to meet his needs, and it's frankly overwhelming.
Does anyone have experience with ASD-welcoming school departments around Lakeville, MA? Ideally a school that includes inclusive co-taught classrooms, sensory spaces, social groups, etc. Where they'll work with a child who has severe sensitivity to noise and smells and struggles with self regulation. Hopefully a school that does coding/tech stuff, since he seems to excel and enjoy those subjects immensely.

2023.06.06 16:45 LostStar33 Dental Hygienist Kelley Louise Howard missing from Alabama since 2009

Kelley Louise Howard was a 41-year-old married woman and mother who worked as a dental hygienist at Riverside Family Dentistry in Riverside Alabama. She lived in Pell City Alabama with her husband Boyd, whom she was married to for 8 years. Kelley also had an adult son. On June 2nd, 2009 around noon Kelley was talking on the phone with her mother while in the Riverside Family Dentistry office, during the conversation someone came to the office door and Kelley ask her mother to wait for a moment while she answered the door. Kelley never returned to the phone and has not been heard from since this time.
At 1:00 PM Kelley was seen leaving her office on Highway 78 (it is not clear who saw her leave or where this information came from). In 2012 it was revealed that the police had a small amount of information (their description) that her phone was used in Talladega County around the time from 12:50 and 1:10 PM.
After her husband reported her missing on June 2nd, 2009 her car was found the same day in the parking lot of her office, her keys were oddly found in a plastic bag in a weed/kudzu patch next to the office.
The day before her disappearance Kelley had requested three days off of work for a short vacation, her husband was unaware that she had requested this time off. As far as anyone knows Dr. Rick Mitchell, her boss, was the last person to see her in the office when he left for lunch around 12:30 PM. In 2011 Dr. Rick Mitchell was indicted for fraud, money laundering, and identity theft. Some of her family believe her disappearance may be related to her boss's illegal activities but there has been no proof of any connection.
Kelley has not used her bank accounts or credit cards since June 2, 2009. She was declared legally dead in 2014. Several searches have been conducted to find Kelley but nothing has been found.
Small Notes:
-Boyd Howard, Kelley's husband said that the morning of her disappearance Kelley said she was feeling sick but still went to work. According to Charley Project, Kelley suffers from a blood disorder that causes episodes of memory loss and may take medication that can cause disorientation. While this disorder and medication are mentioned on the Charley Project page there are no reports from family or friends I could find that described incidents of Kelley being disoriented or having amnesia at any time, that doesn't mean that this never happened to her but I cannot find any information that states she actually experienced these effects.
-Before her disappearance, Kelley was about to become a Grandma, and family and friends stated she was so excited and would have never missed the birth or being in her grandchild's life.
-Ricky Van Mitchell, Kelley's former boss went on to become a pastor and in 2019 he and his wife Angela Mitchell were indicted on charges of first-degree insurance fraud, second-degree arson, and criminal conspiracy as they had attempted to burn down a church/building they owned to claim insurance money. Before Richard Mitchell could go to trial for these new charges he died of a heart attack.
-Kelley Louise Howard is described as a Caucasian female, 5'3, 140 pounds with brown hair (all descriptions list brown hair but in pictures, she appears blonde) with blue eyes. Her Maiden name was Henderson and is sometimes referred to as Kelley Henderson Howard. If she is alive right now she would be 55 years old.
-There is no mention of a struggle in or around her car when it was found, just her keys being in a bag nearby.
-There is not a ton of information about this case out there and there have been very few updates.
Theories:
  1. The family believes that Richard Mitchell's illegal activity could have been discovered by Kelley and he may be responsible for her disappearance.
  2. Kelley left on her own accord for reasons unknown
  3. A random attacker kidnapped her from her office
  4. She had a medical episode and may have wondered off not knowing who she is

2023.06.06 16:37 iamdeletosh The BoN Report: Tinubu v. 🇳🇬 Hope / Mr. Eazi & the “India Business Model” / Lagos Startup Expo “Expo”

Hope you had a great week under our new leader. Here are stories from the past week that affect our businesses.
A Favourite
Nigeria’s business activities hit 5-month high We’re optimistic and the results are finally returning to some sort of normal, better than the 23Q1. This looks at the composite index of New Order, Output, Employment, Suppliers’ Delivery Times, and Stock of Items Purchased.
The Markets
Can Tinubu turn the tide on FDI? In 2015, Nigeria’s FDI was $1.45bn; by 2022 it was $468.08m (to be fair, COVID played a big role on this too). Now this is the big question, can our new leader turn the tide? Tinubu’s business background is an advantage that the last leader did not have..
Nigeria Can Service N46tn Debt - Ex Minister No matter how you slice the cake, spending 96.3% of your revenue servicing debt is bad news. And in Nigeria’s case, there seems to be a projection that it might rise to 123.4% — that’s one side of the story. Ex-Finance Minister, Mrs Zainab Ahmed shares are good news here (maybe to calm the incoming minister?). *** Nigeria boosts worldwide offshore drilling by $4.1 billion Energy is going to be an enormous opportunity for a long time. Yes, renewables will continue to grow BUT, it will not displace the investments, the new reserves that Nigeria (and its neighbours have).
Culture
Africa can become world’s top exporter of technology talent Mr. Eazi (Oluwatosin Ajibade) clearly knows a bit more than just afro beats. ““You have over 10 million smart, young people getting out of university each year in need of jobs….” This is the realisation that made India the “software brain-capital” of the world from the 90s — what pushed their GDP u Nigeria is primed for the same. Finally, an afro pop star that isn’t obsessed with light-skinned women.. .🤷🏿
“Charge from day one.” How to run your startup on a tight budget When you really want to see if things are working, there’s only one way to find out: how much will they pay and how many are paying? Here’s an insight from a way to approach it from PiggyVest’s Co-founder, Odunayo Eweniyi at the just concluded Lagos Startup Expo
Business magnate, Abbey Onas launches ‘Emi Lokan’ fabric You can always trust Nigerians to be opportunistic. Really? I mean, really?

2023.06.06 16:25 nokiatoth3moon Recently divorced, ex wants to try again, but on her terms. Advice?

Tl;dr: separated since February, divorced since April. After having begged my ex to work on our marriage and not throw it all away before divorcing to no avail, she now wants to casually date me to see if she can rekindle her romantic feelings towards me. Part of me wants to go for it, part of me is too hurt and feels she's taking the wrong approach as the trust that was broken will need a giant effort on her part to rebuild, and she wants to pretend like nothing ever happened.
My ex (27F) and I (29M) recently divorced. We separated in February, filed in March, divorce was finalized in April. We were together for almost 8 years, married 5.5y. We have an almost 4yo.
For simplicity, I'm just going to refer to her as my wife below if I'm talking about a time we were still married.
My wife was the one to ask for the divorce, claiming she had fallen out of love with me and had been feeling this way for over 2 years, but was trying to make it work.
I did not see the divorce coming at all. I thought our marriage was improving and I was seriously crazy about my wife. For me divorce had never been an option (outside of cases of abuse, or infidelity), much less a thought that ever crossed my mind. I thought my wife felt the same way.
As hard as it is to hear your wife wants to leave, the biggest pain came from the timing. She broke the news the moment I came out of an 8 day quarantine. Our daughter had come down with covid, so I stayed with her so my wife wouldn't get sick. During those 8 days all I thought about was my wife, how much I loved her, how much I missed her, how much her happiness meant to me. As soon as I came out of quarantine, she hit me with the news. It was devastating. To add to the bad timing, the next day was her citizenship appointment (she obtained citizenship through our marriage).
The timing + the request for divorce left me broken and questioning our entire marriage. Had I simply been used? Did she only marry me so she could gain citizenship? Did she just use me to bring her family (we brought her brother and her mom from her country and they were living with us)? Was she just waiting until she had everything she needed and then she could throw me away? My self worth took a dive for the months to follow.
I pleaded with her to reconsider. To try couples counseling, to try a separation rather than a divorce, to try anything, but her mind was made up and she did not want to be married to me anymore. Up until the day of the hearing I kept hope and I asked her if she was sure, or if she wanted to reconsider. The answer was always the same. The day of the hearing something within me broke. I knew the relationship was over and I decided to move on.
Fast forward to 2 weeks ago. I noticed my ex was acting strange. She kept lingering when dropping off our daughter. She randomly brought me food. She called me just to talk to me (rather than to talk about our daughter). Until finally she sent me a message asking me out on a date. I called her and we talked about her feelings.
She said she was confused. Felt like she might have made a mistakes. Said she missed having me around. Said she really wanted our daughter to have her family full time. (For reference, my ex has been having a really rough time with our daughter. She has her 3 days a week, but those 3 days are very difficult as our daughter often doesn't listen to her and constantly just asks about me. I do not have any issues with my daughter when she is with me, and she has asked for her mom maybe 4 times in over 4 months we've been living apart). But she did say she still did not feel romantically attached to me.
She said she wanted to go on dates so we could maybe start over and rekindle a relationship. But she said she had a lot of doubts about her feelings. I told her I wasn't opposed to the idea, but that I needed some assurances. That she had to be 100% sure that it is what she wanted and that she was going to have to work very hard to try to rebuild the trust that she had broken. I told her to seek counseling, get her thoughts straight, and figure out what she wanted before we did anything.
Yesterday she called and told me she has been seeing a therapist and that he has helped clarify her thoughts. She said the therapist recommended that we have casual sex to try to rebuild the romantic aspect of the relationship, but that she did not feel comfortable with that. Then she said she at this time we should just move on. I didn't know what to say so we just ended the call. After some time I sent her a message thanking her for her honesty, but stating that I did not really understand what had changed since our conversation a few weeks ago. That based on that I felt it made the most sense that if she was feeling doubts, that she explore thise doubts while the possibility still exists. But that I was done begging for love, for her to do what she felt was right for her, and that I hoped she finds what she is looking for.
She then sent me a bunch of messages basically saying she wants to try something casual to see if her romantic feelings return. That she didn't bring it up again because she feels it's too different from what I need (her being 100% sure she wants to try again and working hard to rebuild the trust she broke) and that if it doesn't work the semblance of an amicable relationship we have will just be broken. She said if I want to start from 0 and try something casual to see what happens, that she is open to that. I left her on read as I didn't know what to say. After a few hours she called me and I told her it would be best if we speak in person. Her dad and her other brother are visiting starting next week so she said it likely wont be until they leave towards the end of the month.
I don't know what to do. Part of me really wants to try, I mean if she had mentioned this prior to the divorce being finalized, I don't think I would've had any objections. But now, I feel it's not fair to me. I feel like I am the one taking all the risk, and there is no accountability for her and the way she blew up out lives and this is just a recipe for disaster and if it doesn't work out I'm going to be shattered. But then again I feel like if I'm going to have to start from 0 with a stranger, why not try it with my ex. Don't I owe her at least that much? Don't I owe it to our daughter to put my pride aside and try again? But how do you casually date your exwife? Is it possible to "start from 0" when there's so much history and a child in between.
Any and all advice, comments, thoughts are appreciated.

2023.06.06 16:22 autotldr Australia Discovers a Long-Extinct Sea Scorpion That Can Reach 2 Meters in Length

This is the best tl;dr I could make, original reduced by 74%. (I'm a bot)
A Queensland museum has uncovered a brand-new, extinct species of sea scorpion.
The Woodwardopterus freemanorum is Queensland's first fossil representation of a sea scorpion.
The sea scorpion fossil was first found in the 1990s on Nick Freeman's family farm in the vicinity of Theodore, Queensland.
The fossil of the now-extinct sea scorpion served as Dr. Andrew Rozefelds' focus as he spent a significant portion of the COVID-19 closures revisiting numerous fossil cold cases.
According to Dr. Rozefelds, using established dates for volcanic sediments preserved in the coal of the fossil allows for the most exact measurement of the Theodore sea scorpion.
One of the biggest predators in the lakes and rivers of Theodore would have been the extinct species of sea scorpion.
