Oh, Jimmy Mack, when are you coming back?
In another world it would be funny, but for years I asked that very question.
You see, my fiancé’s name is Jimmy Mack. He disappeared without a trace in 2018.
How do you disappear without a trace these days? It just doesn’t seem possible in a modern world, where almost everyone is somehow connected. Yet he did; he vanished. The police were baffled, private investigators were a waste of money, and my own attempts at sleuthing were futile.
If it wasn’t for the fact that we were ridiculously in love and things were so perfect, I wouldn’t have tried so hard. But everything was a vomit inducing fairytale for us. Even our names were cute af; Jimmy & Jessie sittin’ in a tree… I know he loved me as much as I loved him, and he would have done anything for me.
I heard all the theories. ‘Jess… Maybe he has a secret family… He might have been involved with criminals… Perhaps he took his own life…’
They didn’t know Jimmy like I did. I know you can never really know someone fully, but I knew those things could never be true of him. So I became estranged from family and friends, my life consumed with finding Jimmy. Every penny was spent on expensive investigation and cheap booze.
But then came the intervention. My mom, brother, and best friend Lori came to my apartment one evening. Mom took my hands.
“I want my daughter back,” she cried. And as I met the eyes of those closest to me it was like a weight had lifted. I dropped to the floor and cried for hours, releasing years of internal pain. It was exactly what I needed.
It wasn’t that I never thought of Jimmy again, but I began to move on. I even went on a couple of dates, and attended therapy sessions. There’s a whole psychology behind mourning an unexplained loss. I found it all very helpful.
Then I received a handwritten letter:
Dear Jessie,
You don’t know me but I have information about the disappearance of your fiancé James Mack in March 2018.
If you are interested in finding out more, meet me at Marcy’s Diner off [redacted]. I will be there between the hours of 20:00 and 22:00 every evening from Monday 13th - Friday 17th.
Come alone and sit in a window booth. I will make myself known as soon as I feel it’s safe to do so.
I repeat; come alone. If there’s any indication you have alerted the authorities, or discussed this with friends/family, the offer is void.
This offer is time sensitive. If you don’t visit the diner between those dates and times I will assume you are not interested. This will never be offered to you again in future.

My hands trembled as months of progress began to unravel. I poured a shot of vodka and downed it, followed by one more to take the edge off. I was so close to calling Lori, her number ready to speed dial. I needed someone to talk sense into me, to tell me it was a hoax.
‘Don’t go through with it Jessie, it’s just some sicko taking advantage of your grief. Let’s go for cocktails!’
But I put my phone down and read the letter again. And again. I read it over and over, looking for something I might have missed despite the contents being clear.

Monday came around. I pulled into the Marcy’s Diner car park just after 20:00, observing the patrons from the safety of my car. It looked pretty empty. Some tourists, a few trucker types. It was a convenient rest spot due to its location off the highway. No one screamed I have information about your beloved Jimmy Mack, like there was a physical description for that type of person.
I hung around for an hour or so before I chickened out and drove home. Rinse and repeat Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. On Thursday I didn’t even think about it. I parked up just before 20:00 and stepped out of my car, hesitating for the slightest moment before entering the chrome and candy stripe diner.
A few people observed me briefly before going back to their hot mugs and oversized burgers. As instructed I found a vacant window booth. They were all vacant. I chose the one furthest from the entrance. As I sat down I thought why the fuck did you think that was a good idea? My anxiety stopped me from switching seats regardless.
“Evening darlin’,” said a blond 40-something waitress wearing a blue gingham dress. She held a pot of coffee as she smiled down at me. “What can I get for you?”
“Oh, erm,” I was going to say nothing but realized that would be weird. “Coffee is good, thank you.”
She turned over a white mug that was on the table amongst novelty condiment bottles and laminated menus.
“Can I get you a slice of pie darlin’?” she said as she poured the coffee. “Cherry or chocolate-pecan.”
My stomach was in knots but I didn’t want to appear rude, so I opted for a slice of cherry pie. It arrived barely a minute later and I thanked her, then proceeded to tap my fingers on the table as I discreetly looked around the diner.
After an hour had passed I was three mugs of coffee down and had finished the pie, which was delicious. For a moment I’d forgotten my purpose for being there, beginning to relax a little. Then the door opened and a man walked in, giving me a quick glance as he headed to the counter. He wore a camo parka and what I’d call worker jeans, with a black baseball cap. He turned around after being handed a mug and I averted my eyes, looking out of the window. I could see his reflection getting closer to my table. When he stopped in my peripheral vision I turned, and he slipped into the seat opposite me.
“Jessie,” he said with a nod. “Pleased to see you inside the diner this evening.”
He had chiselled features and a little stubble. I put him in his early 40s. I cleared my throat.
“And what do I call you?”
He smiled. “You can call me Mike if it makes this easier for you.”
I shifted in my seat, trying to get comfortable. I folded my arms, then unfolded them, then put them on the table.
“Relax,” he said.
I let out a quick laugh. “That’s easy for you to say. I have no idea who you are. I don’t even know why I’m here, you gave no proof that you actually know anything about Jimmy.”
“I know everything,” he said deadpan. “And I’ll tell you if you want to hear it.”
I stared into his eyes until I felt mine glaze over, then cleared my throat again. “Let me guess; for a price?”
He shook his head. “I don’t want your money, Jessie.”
“Why now?” I snapped. “Do you know what these past 5 years have been like for me?” I felt tears coming on and he went to reach for my hand, but I recoiled. He pulled his hands away and looked apologetic.
“Unbearable, devastating, frustrating…”
“All the above!” I said as tears started to fall. “I couldn’t function at times. I stopped looking after myself. I abandoned my friends and family. It’s crazy how someone can do that to you.”
“Because you were in love,” he said.
“We were in love. We were the fucking Shutterstock image of love. And when that ends abruptly without explanation…”
“Everything alright darlin’?” the waitress interrupted, holding out a tissue. She glared at Mike. I took the tissue and nodded.
“Yes, thank you. I’m fine. Sorry, I’ll keep it down.”
“Don’t be sorry darlin’, you just let me know if you need anything, okay?”
“I will, thank you.”
She walked away and I wiped my eyes, feeling a little embarrassed.
“I can only apologize for how you’ve been feeling,” he said. “But I’m here to make it right. You could say I developed a conscience, or moral compass. I don’t know. I’m a changed man.”
I looked at him with confusion. “I don’t understand?”
“It’s easier if I show you,” he said. “But not here. You have to ask yourself if you trust me enough to go for a drive.”
“In your car?” I said. “Absolutely not!”
“Okay, how about if you drive?”
“To the middle of nowhere I bet?”
“Look Jessie,” he said, his eyes burning into me. “I’m not going to hurt you. I’m really trying here, but if you’d rather leave it I get it.”
Call me stupid or naive, but something in his eyes made him appear somewhat genuine. I took a crazy chance.
“No… I need to know what happened to him.”
Mike nodded then raised a hand. “Say, could I get a slice of pie to go?”

As predicted we were driving further into the wilderness than I would have preferred. The passing cars were few and far between.
“How much further?” I asked. “I might need to stop for gas.”
“Not too far now,” said Mike. “If you don’t mind sharing, do you remember the last moments you spent with James?”
I sighed. “I do, but I can’t remember the last time anyone called him James outside of the media. He hated it. He’d been Jimmy since elementary school.”
“Sorry,” he said. “Tell me about that last day you spent with Jimmy.”
“It was an ordinary day. A Wednesday. We woke up, had breakfast. I went to work, Jimmy worked from home. He called me on my lunch break like usual, just to hear your voice he always said. God, we were insufferable.” I let out a laugh.
“Take the next left,” said Mike. “I’m listening.”
“So yeah. We had a little chat, then I went back to work. I got home and Jimmy had already started dinner. He was a much better cook than me. We drank wine, watched a movie.”
“What movie did you watch?”
“The Notebook,” I laughed. “For the umpteenth time. I know, I hate us too.”
“Keep driving straight,” said Mike. “It’s a few minutes away.”
“What is?” I asked.
“What happened after the movie?” he said.
“Nothing, we went to bed.”
“Did you make love?”
I briefly turned to him in disapproval. “Excuse me?”
“Did you fuck?” he said, unflinching.
I shook my head. “No, sorry to disappoint you. Now where the hell are you taking me?”
“It’s just up here,” he said. “So you went to bed and then you never saw him again?”
I took a deep breath and shook my head. “Jimmy had already gone when I woke up. No note, no text. It was strange but I didn’t think too much of it at the time. I sent him a text asking where he was. When half the day went by with no response I started to worry.”
“And the rest is history, as they say.”
I nodded as I fought back tears.
“We’re here,” said Mike.
I looked around. It was dark from what the headlights illuminated, I couldn't see anything but trees. “What’s here?”
“Just stop the car. It’s a short walk.”
I felt my heart race as my vulnerable situation became apparent. I really was in the middle of nowhere with a strange man, one who had withheld information about my missing fiancé for 5 years. I stared at him wide eyed.
He shrugged. “I’m not really sure what I can say to make you more comfortable?”
I slowly reached for my bag and pulled out a pocket pistol. Mike let out a surprised laugh.
“Maybe I don’t need to say anything?” he said.
“This makes me more comfortable,” I said.
He nodded. “Fair enough. Let’s go.”

After walking for several minutes, feeling grateful that I’d opted for comfortable footwear that evening, we came to a cabin within the trees. The porch was lit.
‘Jessie; you know better than this girl’ I thought to myself, my hand clutching the pistol inside my bag.
“Why did it have to be a cabin in the woods?” I said, Mike a few feet in front of me.
“I like solitude,” he said. “I couldn’t think of anything worse than living in the city.”
We walked up the steps to the porch area. At one end there was a single chair with a blanket on it, and a small table with some beer bottles. At the other end I spotted some deep red patches on the floorboards. Mike noticed me looking.
“Don’t worry,” he said. “It’s deer blood. I’m pretty self sufficient out here.”
We entered the cabin and Mike turned on the lights. It was quite basic, not overly decorated. There were some framed pictures on the walls, a dinner table, and a living area with some chairs, a small television and a log burner.
“I’m kind of disappointed there’s no stag’s head mounted on the wall,” I said as I took in my surroundings.
Mike shrugged. “I don’t see the animals as a prize. It’s food, survival. There are a few skulls out back if you want to check them out?”
I shook my head. “I’m good.”
Mike put the slice of pie he’d got from Marcy’s on the kitchen counter.
“Water, beer?” He opened the fridge and pulled out a beer bottle.
“This isn’t a social visit,” I said. “And call me paranoid but that would make me very stupid."
He nodded. “You’re right, I hope you don’t mind if I have one though.” He screwed off the cap and took a swig. “Let’s sit.” He motioned to the living area and I followed him.
“You know it’s dangerous to leave your fire burning when you’re not home,” I said, feeling the warmth from the log burner as I took a seat on an armchair. I kept my bag by my side and my hand on the pistol.
“It gets cold in here,” he said, sitting on another chair. “I’ll take my chances.”
He spoke about his cabin for a while, the whole time I became increasingly more uncomfortable due to the fact that I’d needed the bathroom since leaving the diner.
“I’d like to get straight to the point,” I said. “But I really need to use the bathroom.”
“Sure,” he said, pointing to a door down a hallway. “Over there.”
The bathroom was clean enough, though I did my business without touching the toilet seat. Something that had become a habit when using strange or public bathrooms. As I washed up I heard a groaning noise that sounded like it came from another room in the cabin. My heart jolted.
“Mike?” I said, creeping out of the bathroom. I had my bag over my shoulder and my shaking hand gripped the pistol. “What was that sound?”
I peeked over to the living area and couldn’t see him. I started to panic.
“Mike?” I said loudly. “This isn’t cool. Where are you?”
I heard that muffled groaning noise again and jumped, turning on the spot. There was another door further down the hall. Against my better judgement I crept closer to it, flinching each time the groan was emitted. It got louder the closer I got to the door.
“Mike?” I said, my whole body trembling.
“Sorry Jessie,” I heard Mike say from behind, and suddenly a cloth covered my mouth. My bag slipped from my shoulder but I still had the gun in my hand which I lifted as I struggled. Mike brought his other arm around me and squeezed tight, pinning my arms to my body. I became lightheaded as I breathed in chemicals.
“Shush,” he said quietly in my ear. “Just let it be.”
As I blacked out I was screaming inside my head. ‘You stupid girl!’

When I came to my vision was momentarily blurred, but as I focused I saw Mike opposite me. We were sitting at the dinner table.
“Welcome back,” he said. I attempted to stand but my right hand was cuffed to the table leg. I pulled on it several times until pain shot through my arm. “That’s solid oak. I mean, you might get free but probably at the expense of your wrist.”
“You bastard!” I screamed. “Let me go. Help! Help me please!”
“Calm down Jessie,” he said. “I’m sure I don’t need to tell you there’s no one out here to help you.”
I started to cry as I shook. “Oh God… What are you going to do to me? Are you going to…”
“I told you already, I’m not going to hurt you! Though that wasn’t completely true because I’m sure you have a splitting headache right now?”
He got up and retrieved a small bottle from a cupboard, then filled a glass from the faucet. He placed the glass in front of me as well as two pills from the bottle.
“Paracetamol. You’ll thank me later.”
“I’ll never thank you!” I screamed, then moaned as my head pounded. I reluctantly picked up the pills and swallowed them with water. “Why am I cuffed?”
As he spoke he walked across the cabin. “Because I believe what you’re about to hear would cause you to run. When I’m done you’re more than welcome to leave, you have my word.”
He returned with a MacBook and placed it on the table. It looked alien amongst the cabin interior. My surprised expression must have been clear.
“I’m not a Luddite,” he said. “I have WiFi and Netflix just like you city folks.”
“Great,” I said sarcastically. “But you really need to start talking.”
“I don’t think you’re in any position to give demands,” he said. “But very well. Here’s the first thing you’re not going to like hearing: I’ve been inside your apartment.”
My jaw dropped. “Wha… What?”
He opened the MacBook and tapped on the keyboard, then showed me the screen. There were several images of my apartment interior. I picked up the glass and took a swig of water, wishing it was something stronger. “Why were you in my apartment Mike?”
“Well, here’s the next thing: I’m a serial killer.”
I shifted back on the chair and pulled on the cuffs, starting to hyperventilate. “Oh God oh God oh God…”
“Calm down Jessie,” he said.
“Give me a fucking break,” I shouted. “Jesus Christ!” I clung onto the cuffs with my free hand and pulled hard, groaning. The table only moved ever so slightly but I felt like I’d run a marathon. I sat up and stared at Mike as I breathed heavily. “You killed Jimmy?”
“I target lovers,” he said. “I observe them for months before I take things further. When the time is right I abduct one. Which one I choose is more down to opportunity than anything else. Then I pose a question: Are you prepared to sacrifice yourself for the one you love? Make a choice; you or them.”
I covered my mouth with a trembling hand. “Oh Jimmy… You sacrificed yourself for me.”
Mike tapped on the keys some more. “I install secret cameras in the lovers’ homes when they’re out. Like I said, I observe them for months, and not just outside. I need to get a feel for their relationship before I intervene. It has to be true love or it just doesn’t feel right. And you only get to see the real deal when no one else is looking. Excessive PDAs are often a sign of insecurity, they mean nothing really.”
He turned the screen back to me and a video was playing. “I edited this just for you.”
It showed Jimmy and I sitting at our breakfast bar. In the corner of the screen was Mar 7th 2018, 07:54.
“Wait!” I said, my heart beating out of my chest. I paused the video. “I don’t think I want to see this.”
“You have to, Jessie. I’m sorry. You’re free to leave once it's over.”
I felt my heart through my chest. “Can I at least take you up on that drink?”
He got up and walked to the fridge, taking out a beer.
“Do you have anything stronger?” I asked.
He nodded and reached under the kitchen counter, then returned with a whisky bottle and two tumblers. He poured two measures and pushed one towards me, then sat back down.
“We’re all out of ice unfortunately.”
“Fuck the ice,” I said, downing it in one gulp. I closed my eyes as I felt my chest burn inside, then signalled for Mike to top me up. After a moment I hit play on the screen.

Jimmy and I eat breakfast. He picks up a strawberry and rubs it against my lips.
“Stop it,” I say, giggling as I slap his arm. “I have to leave shortly.”
“Come on Jess,” he says. “Open wide.” He puts the strawberry in my mouth then gently kisses my lips.
“To be continued,” I say, getting off the stool and grabbing my things.
“No fair!” he sulks.
“Have a good day babe,” I say, kissing his cheek.
“I love you, Jess,” he says, momentarily holding me against him.
“I love you more,” I say, pulling away to run to the door. “See you this evening.”

Jimmy comes out of the bathroom with a towel wrapped around him, then goes to the bedroom.

Jimmy sits at the table on his laptop and takes a few work related calls.

Jimmy takes another call. “Hey you. Yeah. No, she won’t be back until like 7 at the earliest.”
I took another sip of whisky and briefly met Mike’s eyes as he watched me. I held the glass close to my chest, my knuckles white.
Jimmy continued. “Absolutely, I’d love to see you… Great, see ya soon.”

The buzzer rings and Jimmy uses the intercom. “It’s open.”
I downed the whisky and pushed the glass towards Mike. He leaned over and poured another measure.
Jimmy opens the door and in comes my best friend Lori. She embraces him.

They sit on the couch together.
“Shit, I’ve got to call Jess,” says Jimmy. “It’s our thing.”
“Seriously?” says Lori.
“Yep, every lunch break without fail. She’ll get paranoid if I don’t.”
Fucking asshole. It was never something I asked for or insisted on. Whatever makes him feel better.
He makes the call and puts a finger against his lips. In the meantime Lori unzips his fly and feels inside.
“Hey baby, how’s your day going? Ah, that’s awesome! Yeah, it’s been a productive morning. I’m gonna heat up some soup, what are you having?”
He puts his other hand behind Lori’s head and pushes it into his lap. His head slowly tilts back.
“That sounds amazing. Okay, well I just wanted to hear your voice baby. And you, can’t wait to see you later. Love you too. Bye.”

They come out of the bedroom and Lori puts on her shoes. Jimmy puts his arms around her from behind and nuzzles her neck.
“Do you have to leave already?” he says.
“What if she comes home?” says Lori.
“I promise you she won’t be home for a while. Come on.”
She turns and slaps his chest. “You’re a bad boy, Jimmy Mack.” They kiss.

They chop vegetables in the kitchen.
“I wish we were cooking for us,” says Jimmy.
“Me too,” says Lori. “We really should tell her soon. It’s gone on long enough.”
Tears stream as I finish my third whisky.
He nods. “I know. I keep trying. I already know how tonight will go. We’ll eat dinner and then she’ll want to watch some shit like The Notebook.”
Lori laughs. “I feel so bad for you.”
“She’s such a hopeless romantic,” he says.
“Hopeless being the operative word,” laughs Lori.
“Me-ow!” he laughs.

The door to our apartment opens and in comes a tall figure dressed in black. They slowly open our bedroom door and creep inside. After a few minutes Jimmy leaves the room in a t-shirt and boxers, his hands up as he’s followed by the figure at gunpoint. They leave the apartment.

I sat in silence staring at the screen.
“I’m sorry for what you’ve been through Jessie,” said Mike. “But as you can see he didn’t deserve your pain and suffering.”
I put the glass on the table and wiped the tears from my face. “Maybe not. But he didn’t deserve to die.”
“Would you say the same if you knew he chose you?”
“What do you mean?” I asked.
“Well, like I said. I take one of the lovers and give them a choice. I’d never experienced something like this, having only observed genuine love. It threw me. He was a lying piece of shit but I still posed the question.”
Mike found another video and played it.
Jimmy is sitting on a chair in a dark room under a hanging light, his arms tied behind his back. He struggles to free himself.
“James Mack,” says Mike offscreen.
“Who are you?” screams Jimmy. “I’ll fucking kill you when I get free!”
“How much do you love Jessie?”
“What?”
“Would you die for her?”
“What the fuck are you talking about?” Jimmy shouts.
“Would you die for her?” Mike roars, coming into shot and putting his forehead against Jimmy’s. He holds a gun at his side.
Jimmy recoils. “I… I…”
“It’s you or her James!” Mike cocks the gun and holds it against Jimmy’s head. “Make your decision.”
“Her!” Jimmy cries. “Take Jessie! You’ll be doing me a fucking favor you psycho!”
Mike stopped the video as I covered my mouth. “How does that make you feel Jessie?”
I shook my head. “I’d like to see what your response would be if someone held a gun to your head.”
He nodded. “Fair point. But just so you know, I’ve targeted 5 couples so far and they all chose to sacrifice themselves.”
“It doesn’t matter,” I said. “I hate him for this but he still didn’t deserve to die.”
Mike came over and took a key out of his pocket, then released the cuff around my wrist. I gripped it with my other hand and held it against my chest.
“Oh, he’s not dead Jessie,” said Mike, walking to the kitchen counter. He picked up the box containing the pie.
“What?”
He walked across the room down the hall, then stopped at the door at the end.
“You’re free to go Jessie,” he said. “Or you can come say hi.”
He pushed open the door then disappeared. I got up and frantically looked around the cabin. I saw my bag sitting on a coffee table and rummaged inside. My gun, my keys, my phone were all there. I ran to the main door and breathed in the cool night air, then hesitated. I looked over my shoulder.
You stupid girl I repeated in my head over and over as I approached the door down the hall. There was a staircase leading down into a dimly lit basement. I could hear Mike’s voice and some groans as I slowly began to descend, my body trembling. There was a vile smell that got worse with every step. It made me retch.
When I got to the bottom I saw Mike standing over the figure of a pale man that sat with his back to me. He was wearing rags, and the skin I could see was dirty and covered in sores. His skin was impossibly stretched over visible bones. He was eating noisily as he groaned.
“Is that good James?” asked Mike, and I saw the figure nod enthusiastically. The back of his head revealed long thinning hair with bald patches.
Mike looked over his shoulder and smiled when he met my eye. “Oh my, James. You’ll never guess who’s come to visit?”
The figure looked up inquisitively, then turned his head in my direction.
I could see it in his eyes. His handsome features had been buried under a pale, gaunt complexion. But I could tell it was Jimmy by his eyes. It took him a few seconds to acknowledge who he was looking at but suddenly his eyes widened, the thin skin of his forehead flaking as it wrinkled. He had pie smeared across his mouth. He had some teeth missing and the ones I could see looked jagged and broken.
“Jessie?” he said, in a voice that wasn’t quite the same. It was weathered, like that of a senior citizen with a bad smoking habit.
My lips trembled as I nodded. “It’s me Jimmy.”
He suddenly stood and lunged towards me, his hands outstretched. I flinched but he was held back by shackles around his ankles.
“Jessie!” he groaned. My heart couldn’t take it, feeling like it was going to explode. I fell to my knees as the 5 year mystery was solved in the most horrifying way.
“Isn’t it nice of Jessie to stop by?” said Mike. “Even after the way you treated her.”
Jimmy became restless, pulling on the shackles. He kept groaning like he was in pain.
“How could you do this to him?” I cried. “Even a rabid beast doesn’t deserve this!”
Mike shrugged. “I guess I felt bad for you. I’d never really considered the feelings of anyone else until I saw just how much you loved this man. And when I witnessed his betrayal day after day I just grew to hate him more. I knew a bullet to the brain wasn’t enough for this piece of shit.”
Mike turned to Jimmy and started rubbing his back. “But you know, over the years this piece of shit has grown on me. We’re like family now, aren’t we James?”
“No!” Jimmy screamed, making me fall back. “No no no!”
He buried his face in Mike’s neck, making him scream in pain. Dark blood cascaded down Mike’s shirt. Considering Jimmy was wasted away to nothing, Mike's attempts at freeing himself were useless. He fell to the floor and pushed himself against the wall, holding the gaping wound on his neck.
“James… Don’t…” he managed before Jimmy pounced. It sounded like a wild animal devouring its prey. I covered my ears as I watched in horror, my body refusing to let me look away.
Before long Mike was silent and still, his eyes remained open as he slouched against the wall. Jimmy turned to look at me, at first appearing shy or embarrassed. His face and chest was covered in Mike’s blood. He licked his lips and attempted to wipe it away with the back of his skeletal arm.
Eventually he started to crawl towards me, only stopping when the shackles wouldn’t allow him to get any closer. He groaned, but it wasn’t in anger. His eyes became glassy and he started to cry.
“Jessie,” he said. “I’m sorry.”
My hands trembled as I reached out to him, scared beyond belief but my heart was breaking all over again. I was in two minds, but eventually my hand met his and I felt his bony fingers between mine.
“Oh Jimmy,” I said breathlessly. “I forgive you.”
We held hands for a moment before I stood up. “I’m calling for help.” I made my way to the stairs.
“No!” Jimmy shouted. His eyes pleaded with me. “No Jessie. Please.”

I was driving through Killarney today and saw a huge group of people, men dressed in shirts and trousers, with women in long dresses and white bonnets, outside the church across from the outlet centre. Anyone know what the craic with that is? I’ve been googling different religions all day to try to figure out who they might have been 😛

I want to look super dressy and elegant, so any tips on how to cut the sleeves and/or neck, or the entire lower half, off these shitty t-shirts so I look amazing and trendy?
Bonus points for suggesting netted long sleeves under it or over it or putting them over or under a jumper (Because who doesn't want to look like Wendy in The Shining?).

As I thought about where to go next, a familiar voice called out to me.
"Hey!" they shouted. "What happened there? You were missing for a day and a half."
I looked over. The woman in the suit stepped into the open bushy area.
"I was taken back," I said. "I had to find my way back here. What happened to you?"
"I'm struggling to remember," she said. "It's… a blur. I got caught off guard by… something… I looked at the time and 1 hour had passed."
"Can you help me with the three murderers?" I asked.
"What I can do is investigate you, and while doing so, you'd be protected from interference. If anything actually happens, we'll just get the police on the phone." she said. "But come on. You need to come with me."
She walked me through the forest. I was glad to be in better hands. I didn't know which agency she was from, so I asked her.
"I'm affiliated with the Directorate of Science and Technology," she said. "CIA."
The CIA? I could only think of the worst things they've done. MK Ultra, enhanced interrogation… hopefully they've toned it down by now.
We walked onto a parking lot with a single black car. She unlocked the doors and told me to get in the passenger seat. I climbed in, buckled up, and hoped for the best. I decided to ask her some questions, as my curiosity was piqued.
"Is it okay if I ask you questions?" I asked.
"Depends on your intention," she said.
"Curiosity… about how much the government knows about my situation," I said.
"Well, yes, but don't push too hard or it'll be suspicious," she said, starting the car.
"The CIA… is investigating anomalies…?"
"Yes," she said. "We are studying natural scientific anomalies. Our goal is to go on a deep dive and discover everything about the physics of our reality. In this case, alternate realities and teleportation."
"How many people like me have been investigated?"
"Not too many to count," she said. "There's incomplete to no evidence for most of them."
"Was the Man from Taured real?"
"Man from Taured?" she asked.
I explained the story to her.
"Oh, no, that's an urban myth," she said.
"Any similar stories?" I asked.
"There was a man who mysteriously appeared at an airport in Virginia," she said. "That's all I can tell you at your level."
"Is NASA involved in this?"
"That's a bit above what I can tell you," she said.
"How long has the investigation into anomalies been going on for?" I asked.
"The 90s," she said.
"This is so interesting," I said.
"I'll give you a non-disclosure form to sign," she said. "Until then, I'm going to put the radio on."
"Am I asking too much?"
"No, not at all," she said. "It's just that it's going to take six more hours to get to where you live, so we're definitely going to need some music."
She turned the radio on. A Pop music station was playing The Weeknd and 21 Savage. Seemed normal enough. Nothing was off about the instrumentation or vocals. I relaxed myself, bracing for the rest of the long ride.
I caved in and asked her if I could receive full time protection from my alternate self, despite what she already told me.
"A helicopter is going to circle the area and scan for anomalous signals while 15 agents watch the area," she said. "They're just part of the investigation though. I'll need evidence of danger in order to act against said danger."
Luckily, all those agents were going to be around, so if my claims were proven true, I would be defended. It was nice to hear. I could rest assured, but I wasn't feeling right about the timing. What if my alternate self got tired of chasing me around, then shot me with something he pulled from some alternate reality I've never been to before? I could try to predict what those realities may be, but we didn't have the exact same things happen to us over the past six years, so there was no certainty.
As we drove through rural Pennsylvania, I asked her some things about me.
"How much do you guys know about alternate realities?"
"What I can tell you is we have always speculated about parallel realities. We didn't have much evidence until the 2000s when there was a sudden uptick in anomalous events that pointed to the existence of realities parallel to our own. Again, most of the time, we'd have little to no evidence of the alleged travels, but also little to no evidence disproving those travels. We have images and videos of stuff anomalous people took that we have hidden in our databases that we're… unsure of. The footage we've gotten from you is stuff I've never seen before. But anyway, we've run test after test after test. It's not safe for us to go in ourselves, so we only have what's alleged."
"So no teams came into our reality to talk to us?" I asked.
"We've witnessed anomalies in which people who looked like agents followed… well… other anomalous stuff into this reality, then, brought them back into a portal. We have no idea who they are. They've never spoken to us. Do you know who they are?"
"No," I said. "I've never seen or heard of them before. They must be chasing chaotic things."
"Sometimes they bring people here," she said. "We investigate those people, it turns out they're from here, and they start talking about… terrible places."
"How long has that been going on?" I asked.
"Late 2018," she said. "Even we feel like stuff is being kept hidden from us. We have agents in blue, but they're only one level above mine."
"I mean, I've been to 485 realities… or… well… 490 realities now, and I've never been contacted by them," I said.
"490?" She asked. "Are there any you don't mind talking about?"
"Oh boy," I said. "I've been to realities where the sun was half its size, the Earth had two moons, zombie apocalypses, zombie endemics, a reality where the dinosaurs were still around, where Mu was a real continent… it might sound like I'm ripping stuff from YouTube alternate history videos, but those are some of the ones I was curious about going to."
"Do you have any evidence of you being in these realities?" she asked.
"Well… I've taken some pictures," I said. "But not a lot. As I told you before though, I would like to go back and film all the interesting stuff."
She nodded her head.
"Are these pictures on your phone?"
"Yes, you'll find some on there," I said. "Just look for ones of pink sunsets, very realistic dinosaurs, dilapidated cities, and advanced technology. Smart homes and such. Oh, and I have some pictures I took in personally interesting realities too, so there's those ones, but it'll look like I just edited some webpages or found deleted scenes."
She nodded her head.
"Can you tell me about these personally interesting realities?" she asked.
"They're not very serious, but… I guess if it's important because… alternative realities…" I said, unsure of how much of the lesser serious stuff I was able to explain.
"You're under investigation," she said. "You need to tell me everything you know."
"I've been to realities where certain hyped up video games had been announced and released, where certain singers were much more popular, where one of my favourite shows went on as normal despite the pandemic. It was pretty interesting…"
"Try not to bring any personal opinions into this," she said. "This is just an investigation. We need unbiased information."
"Yes, of course," I said.
"Can you tell me of a specific one of those realities?" she asked.
"There was one where video of the Austin J. Tobin plaza on 9/11 was never lost," I said. "Whoever decided to call it LOL SUPERMAN back in 2006 was a piece of shit. I just wanted to see a rare historical angle."
She nodded her head.
"So, lost footage of historical events?" she asked.
"Not just lost footage," I said. "Unknown information. What if certain things were easy to figure out and had been figured out?"
"Anymore examples?" she asked.
"Well, I found out what happened to that Malaysian flight that went missing," I said. "I'm not sure I want to go there though, in case it turned out to actually be different from this reality."
"Anything else then?"
"I found out who shot JFK by going to a reality in which the shooter was identified," I said. "That sounds like it would be important to you."
"If you're sure of any details potentially being the same as those in our reality, you can tell us," she said. "But remember, we won't just believe everything you say. We'd need to travel to the realities in question for proper evidence."
I told her who the shooter was, then I got in over my head telling her everything else about my travels. I gave her every last detail of most of the other realities I have traveled to. I guess I never opened up about them. It helped me escape the anxiety I had about my alternate self. I was actually having some fun above the fear. I knew it was going to end soon, but with traveling to about 500 different realities, I learned to just live in the moment.
As we drove into Aurora, I was fidgeting with my hands. It was half an hour away. I asked the agent one last thing.
"Is there any advice you can give me?" I asked.
"Lure your alternate self into your room and get him to use the alleged device," she said. "As you've implied, we may have a small window of opportunity here. As I've said, we will be watching you. We have five plans for this scenario. Each one of them is committed to ethics and morality."
Well, it assured me once again. But not completely. With the unpredictability of this, it seemed just as likely things were going to get messy as it was for everything to turn out to be fine.
As we pulled into the driveway, I was frozen. This was it. It was time to face my alternate self. I climbed out of the car, expecting to be shot at any second. I gently opened the door. Once I could peek my head in, I did so gently. Nobody was around.
"Hello?" I shouted.
Nobody answered. I climbed the stairs and checked the living room. No one was there. The silence was killing me. The doors to the other rooms were closed, but I wasn't going to check them anyway. I needed to be in my room. When I walked into my room, nobody was in there. Thank god. I looked out my window. A black helicopter flew in the distance, probably just posing as a training exercise helicopter. I looked at the driveway. The agent was sitting in her car, talking into a radio.
My guts were tight. It was only a matter of time before my alternate self arrived. As I looked at the agent's car, I wondered if there was an alternative to having me face my alternate self. As I thought to myself, I heard three familiar voices. I looked in the direction they were coming from. When the three walked into my view, my stomach clenched harder. I sat beneath the window and listened in on what they were saying.
"It was so satisfying when she stepped on those nails," Billy said.
"Yeah and she was like oh my god! No!" Alternate me said.
The three chuckled in unison.
"And that was the 200th alternate Nicole we killed too," Billy said.
"Yeah… wait," alternate me said. "Who's car is that?"
"The light's on up there," Ian said. "Someone's home."
Well… I hope this ends well.
The front door creaked open. I felt like sinking as I heard their footsteps come in.
"Hello?" Billy shouted as she, along with the others, stepped in. The thumps of footsteps came up the stairs. What was going to be their first reaction? The footsteps got closer and closer, then Billy stepped into view. She looked into the room and stopped. Her eyes widened up.
"Nicole?" she asked. "How?"
I explained to her the whole government agent situation. How I explained every reality I visited. Then I told her if she tries anything, government agents are watching and they will intervene. There was a look of frustration on her face as I gave the warning. She opened her mouth, but then alternate me walked up behind her. She expressed the same amount of surprise.
"What's going on here?" Alternate me asked.
Billy repeated to my alternate self what I had just said. After hearing about what was happening, my alternate self had a confused look on her face.
"How aren't you dead?"
"I guess that place wasn't dangerous enough," I taunted.
Alternate me took out her device and pressed the big button, opening the portal. Her look of confusion turned into a look of determination.
"Step back in," she said. "Right now."
"I'm going to do what makes me comfortable," I said. I stood still, worrying she'd get aggressive, but remembering she wasn't strong enough to pound me.
The front door creaked open again. Multiple footsteps rushed up the stairs. Billy walked up to me, with the deepest look of frustration on her face, and grabbed my hands. I pulled my hands away, but Nicole and Ian walked up to me and grabbed me tight. While I was acting confident, I still felt as if I was about to throw up. I didn't want to go back to that reality. Come to think of it, I no longer wanted to go to any unfamiliar horrific reality for another year. Flashbacks of me watching people hit the ground and explode, seeing the tentacle creatures eat people, and the specks of death flying around all kept popping into my head and triggering anxiety attacks. I needed a break for the sake of my mental health.
I slowly attempted to move, but the three grabbed me tighter in response. I begged for them to let me go, even though I knew it wouldn't work. The dread was only getting deeper. The three brought me over to the portal, and with an overbearing strength, they pushed me back in.
I fell and landed on my back. I stared up at the ceiling, letting myself lay on the soft carpeted floor, wondering why I was still alive.
Well… hopefully I live, right?
I got back up, then I looked out the window. A distant trail of black smoke outlined the horizon. What made it worse was the dead silence. It was pretty surreal.
A light began to reflect in the window. I looked behind me. The portal was open again. A man in tactical gear walked out, stepping onto the floor. He asked me to come with him. As I took a step towards him, something pushed him forwards, straight into me. I fell backwards into the wall with a thud. The man stumbled over to the wall on my right and regained his posture as the Billy, Ian, and alternate me marched out of the portal. Alternate me closed the portal, then walked up to me. Looking me dead in the eyes, she spoke with deep frustration.
"Please understand that I just want you to feel bad for me."
"Um… you want to torture me," I said, still seriously not understanding her logic. "And I want to be comfortable and not scared because I'm about to die."
"You're so stupid," she replied.
"What is going on here?" asked the man in the gear.
Alternate me pointed her device at the man and pressed the button. A portal opened up under the man's feet, causing him to fall. I watched as the portal closed, hoping he wasn't sent to a different gruesome reality.
Two men in suits carrying handguns ran out of the portal. They asked us to freeze and pay attention to them. As they explained they needed us to follow some instructions for research purposes, the front door creaked open. Who could that even be at this point?
"Who's in here?" a male voice shouted.
"I think that's my dad," I said. "But an alternate one of course."
One of the agents walked out into the hallway. He told the man there was a classified investigation happening so he had to stay out of the bedroom. What he responded with chilled me.
"Alright, I see. I guess it has to do with my daughter's death? I know you can't tell me much but I'm looking for someone to talk to after she and her mother were… killed in Richmond Hill."
It was about time I thought more about my parallel self from the reality of the Giant Attacks. It was like speculating on what the fictionalized version of you would be doing in movies like the 2005 remake of War of the Worlds or 2012. Except this was a reality. Another parallel version of me died.
I felt a pain on my neck again. I glanced at my alternate self. She was smiling, Ian was giving me an evil glare, and Billy was giving me a look of disgust while resting her hands on her hips. That was the last thing I saw before I woke up sitting up against a wall in what looked like a bank. There were five others, all looking to be in different age groups, sitting across the room, in the corner to my left. Billy was standing in the middle of the room, speaking to them.
"No one is going to spoil this for me," she said. "I'm going to take the reality hopping stuff further. You know there's realities where advanced weapons exist in easy to use ways. You know there are realities where stuff that's unknown to us has been learned and is very well known. I could learn so much about the universe."
"Please… can I call somebody?" asked one of the older men. "It's not the police, I swear."
She walked into a room on my right. About a minute later, she walked out with a plastic box. She set the box on the ground, then she looked at the group.
"Give your phones to me," she said. "Put them in this box."
The hostages pulled out their phones, stood up, walked over to the box, and dropped their phones in. Then they went back to their spots.
She walked into the room again, this time returning with a water bottle. She twisted the cap off, then she threw it in my direction. She poured water into the bin. The five had distraught faces. The girl kept dumping water into the bin until the bottle was empty. She then threw the bottle at me. She carried the bin over to the five, then she set it down in front of the woman who talked.
"You can take your phones back now."
Alternate me and Ian walked in through the front doors. They raised their eyebrows, looking at Billy as she looked back at them.
"What are you doing?" Ian asked.
"I drowned their phones," Billy said. "Is it time to make them watch?"
"Yes, let's cut to the chase," Alternate me said. She glared at me, staring into my eyes with her usual look of entitled anger. "Nicole, we're tired of chasing you. I'm going to make sure you die here, and I'm going to make sure those people watch it happen."
She pulled out a chrome blue handgun with a design I had never seen before. She walked past Billy, then stopped a couple meters away from me. She pointed the gun at my forehead. There was no higher level of dread I could feel. It was time. In the back of my mind, I knew something like this was going to happen. My alternate self was going to get me somehow, somewhere. Part of me doubted it, as I didn't know what I would've done if I were psychotic and angry. I felt like time was slowing down.
"What k-kind of gun is that?" I asked, expecting little to no explanation.
"It's a brand that gives you the illusion of slowed time while pumping your nerves and organs with sharp pinching robots until you bleed out," she said. "It's from a reality where pain is always ensured as anybody dies."
I shook. Of course she'd explain it with that much detail. I was going out in pain, because of course I was. My alternate self knows all the personal events that have built up to my fear of dying in pain. There was nothing I could say, nothing I could do.
"No," Billy said.
"I need this," Ian said.
A gunshot rang out, striking Ian in the head. He fell to the tiled floor. The people in the corner twitched. The older ones covered their mouths while the younger ones looked more distraught. Alternate me turned around.
"What the hell are you doing?!" she shouted.
"It's best if I do this alone," Billy said.
"Well… I… okay… it doesn't matter," alternate me said. "Don't shoot me."
"As long as you don't interfere, I'll leave you alone," Billy said.
Alternate me pulled the trigger. My stomach was struck an excruciating pain. A painful tingling ran up to my face and down my legs. Alternate me lowered the gun and stared into my eyes with her look of determination. The tingling grew stronger. The excruciating painful bites started on my intestines, making me twitch. I laid on my side, almost jumping at every bite. My stomach and kidneys were the next to be bitten. I wailed. The tingling had grown strong enough to make me lightheaded.
"When will this fucking end?!" I screamed.
The pain was too excruciating for me to talk anymore, so I accepted those as my final words.
Screams echoed from somewhere outside. Billy stepped outside and looked to her left. As the screams continued, she walked towards their source, out of my view.
"Billy!" alternate me shouted. She walked up to the front doors. "Stay there or each of you get what Nicole has," she said, looking at the five hostages. As she pushed the doors open, a white light illuminated everything in the room. Alternate me stopped and looked back at the source of the light. A dark haired woman stepped out. She looked the room over, which included her making eye contact with me. I didn't see a way out of what was happening to my organs, so I didn't bother to scream for help.
The portal woman looked at my alternate self.
"Can you explain to me what's happening here?" the portal woman asked.
"I'm defending myself against my fake alternate self," alternate me said. "Who are you?"
"Agent Arilyn Campbell," the portal woman said.
Arilyn held her gun up at my alternate self's forehead and pulled the trigger. A silver dart struck her. She opened her mouth, but froze before she could speak. Arilyn walked up to her, then she pulled out a handheld device. She held the device up to my alternate self's face. From my angle, I could see a brain was going on. Different parts of my alternate self's brain were lit up. A minute into the scanning, POV videos of walking down side walks, riding in advanced cars, and using advanced phones played.
"So you're the one who's from reality 57470.1 in relation to this reality," Arilyn said. "Let's look at your wrongdoings."
The cool POVs switched to POVs of planting bombs, running people over, throwing people in front of trains, shooting people speaking to an audience, shooting people in various government buildings, drowning people, pushing somebody into a portal, shooting somebody with a glowing blue gun… it wasn't until I watched the repeated portal shoves that I realized the ones in the videos before all had the same oval head shape and facial feature orchestration as me. I had watched my death a couple dozen times over.
Arilyn slid the scanner into her vest.
"I'm taking you in," she said. She put my alternate self's hands in cuffs. This was amazing! I guess there is a team or two out there! Arilyn sprinted up to me. She took a smaller handheld scanner out of her vest and held it up to my face.
"Fuck," she said under her breath. "I'll be right back. Stay here while I get you something."
She took her device out of her vest and opened a portal. She ran into it, leaving me with my frozen alternate self and the shocked looking hostages. My shirt was soaked in tears. My nose, my hands… were red. I threw up on the floor. The portal reopened, then Arilyn sprinted out with a glowing red handgun. She knelt down in front of me, pointed the gun at my stomach, then pulled the trigger. A force hit my stomach. As I squirmed some more, the biting stopped. The tingling began to decrease. The tingling was going back down to the wound. Yes! Arilyn put the gun in her vest, then she pulled out some eye drops she put into both of my eyes. Within a minute, I was in a state of euphoric calmness I hadn't felt in years. Arilyn finished up by putting a bandage over my stomach.
"I'm going to get you to a surgeon for some repairs," she said.
"You're awesome," I said, slipping further into a euphoric high.
Arilyn stood up and walked up to my alternate self. I was glad this was ending, and that I was going to get to stay alive. Arilyn's equipment looked quite advanced. Maybe she was from my alternate self's home reality. That would be quite the narrow-minded assumption, however, considering all the advanced realities there has to be.
Arilyn opened another portal, beside my alternate self. She then grabbed my alternate self by the hands and dragged her into the light.
Three minutes after having left, the portal opened back up. Arilyn stepped out with a look of relief. I made eye contact with her. She looked into my eyes with a look of concern. She closed the portal, then she opened a new one to my left. I noticed right then the hostages in the corner were staring in my direction… likely at the portal, with looks of determination on their faces. Concern accompanied the determination when a certain growling noise echoed in from outside. From the sound of it, it wasn't too far away.
Two paramedics came out of the portal with a stretcher. I was carried onto the stretcher, laid down in a direction giving me a view of the front doors. The growl got louder and louder. A tentacle creature ran in front of the doors, stopping as it saw me. Chills ran down my spine, even despite the medical drug I was put on. It's appearance was still so uncanny. As the paramedics looked me over, there was a bang at the doors, followed by a clicking sound. The hostages' eyes widened. There was another growl, and with that, the hostages got up and ran towards the portal. The paramedics moved to either side of the stretcher and wheeled me through the portal.
"We don't have room for them," said the medic behind me.
On the other side, the portal closed right behind the medic pushing me, revealing a concrete wall. It was over. Well, sort of. I was wheeled down a concrete hallway with windowless steel doors. I was taken into one of the rooms. A surgery room, where I was asked a couple questions about medication, then I was given an anesthesia pill.
"Where am I?" I asked.
"It's best if we let Agent Campbell choose whether to give you that information," the medic said as he put an oxygen mask on my face.
Some time later, I woke up near a waiting room. A flat TV hung off the ceiling above me. A news channel was on. A female reporter talked about released footage of a cyberterrorist's terrifying memories of shooting hostages in the head. Apparently the footage was released via the Freedom of Information Act, and that they captured the terrorist's memories using a brain scanner called HICS.
Am I in some future reality or something?
The date was on the top of the screen, but only the month and day. June 18th.
What year is it?
In the midst of my confusion, Arilyn stepped into the room.
"How are you feeling?" she asked.
"Better," I said. "A little bit drowsy too, of course."
"Well once the anesthesia wears off, I'll take you back to your reality," Arilyn said.
Great! I was finally going back to the comfort of my home reality. All I needed to do was start the discussion about multiverse journalism. I'm going to hold off on going to the darkest realities for about a year, so until then, I plan on going to the tamer realities.
"I just have one question," I told Arilyn.
"Yes?" Arilyn asked.
"I want to become a journalist," I said. "But I want to record the events of different realities. Is there an extra reality hopping device I can have?"
"Well, I could work something out," I said. "But only because when you were asleep, I scanned your memories and saw many of the realities you have gone to. You have much more experience than I do, and it seems you have learned from your reality hopping mistakes. I know I've learned from mine. Hold on a second."
Arilyn stepped out of the room. Once she was gone, I remembered Billy. She said some things, then she left the building. Hopefully she was caught as well. If Arilyn caught my alternate self, she had to have caught Billy too, right?
Anyway, I have a lot of work to do. I'm posting this from an alternate reality on a computer that's able to send signals to different realities. It's pretty cool. I might not give any updates for a while, if I ever do. If I never update again, don't worry. I'm just busy.

Only one Narlabore raised herself out of her shell, and she was the only one who seemed to fully be aware of her surroundings and circumstances.
"Best as we can figure it, without the Queen and without a sufficient critical mass of Narlabore, the Narlabore are more or less... mentally subnormal is probably the nice way to put it. The working theory is they've got a low key collective intelligence, but the primary node in that intelligence is the Queen, and if the male of the hive is another Narlabore, the King add to that network. It's pretty rare that the King of a hive isn't a Narlabore per galactic records. So these girls... save that one there...." Diana points to the more aware Narlabore. "...Just straight up don't know where they are or what's happening to them, or why. If there were enough of them, the Hive would, we think, produce a new Queen. Or if the Queen was intact, she could produce more members of the hive. Knock out both and the hive is effectively neutralized. The one somewhat lucid Narlabore moves slowly over to join them at the wall, her milky white, purple tinged skin on full display as she raises herself up from her armored shell. A red light blinks at her throat, and her voice comes out, first in the shrieking, high pitched language of the Narlabore, and then a second time from the apparent voice modulator in her throat in a somewhat robotic, but still feminine tone.
"We are here Dian'a'Lawson of Hive Crimson'Te'Ar."
Diana doesn't even blink at the strange pronunciation of her name. Apparently she'd talked with Kal'thwet'e before.
"Kal'thwet'e, do your fellows have enough food? Drink? Is there anything else you... need?"
"The sleepers are cared for sufficiently. As is Kal'thwet'e. You do honor to your hive. Many would not care for their enemies as you."

There are Narlabore hives with positive relationships with the galactic community. Perhaps... refugees? Or at the very least they'll have the kind of specialists who can tell if Kal'thwet'e is screwing with us or not."
"That's pinning a lot on the council's flunkies skipper."
"Yeah but this is literally their job, and for all the shit we give them, the council cops aren't that bad in the grand scheme of things. Especially not on matters of procedure and protocol, and this is a matter of procedure and protocol."

Until we can find someone who knows their ass from their elbows and can help... but also reckon the matter of justice for a hive mind. I'm not sure any human can truly do that. Was it all the single despot? Or did say, those who were hunting the children Sir David rescued have some degree of culpability. Moot point perhaps as they're dead... but if it was a group desire..."
Jerry shakes his head firmly.
"No. We're not going down that rabbit hole. Someone has. Someone has sorted this crap and enshrined it in galactic law long ago and I am not going to waste our resources repeating work. You and your people have better things to do. I have better things to do, and if I don't have better things to do, then I should be doing the most important thing of all and spending time with my newborns."

Despite the blockbuster competition that arrived in its fourth weekend, the numbers didn't totally collapse, dropping 53 % for a cume of $151 million. Worldwide it is at $352 million, which isn't a great cume as the grosses start to wind down considering its $200 million budget. Still, it's the biggest of any film since Thor: Love and Thunder, though Wakanda Forever will overtake it any day now. Black Adam came in third place in its fourth weekend, down 29% with $6.1 million, emerging as one of the season's most durable grasses and one of the year's few bright spots when it comes to films for adults. At San Diego Comic-Con in July, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson had other people raising eyebrows when he said that his long-awaited superhero debut in Black Adam would be the beginning of “a new era” for the DC Extended Universe naturally followed: What did he mean? And what would that kind of reset mean for the remainder of DCEU's roster, including Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, the rest of the Justice League, Suicide Squad, Shazam and so on.As

Black Adam has finally ended the box office blues. It will be a Black Adam call, but based on the estimates, the year's biggest opener remains Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness with its $187 million start. Nonetheless, Wakanda Forever's $180 million opening is a huge one, being the biggest ever for the month of November (beating the $158 million of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire), the second biggest of the year, and the 13th biggest of all time (though it could go up or down a few slots once the actuals come out). It led an overall weekend box office of $208 million, which is the fourth biggest of the year and the biggest by a long shot of the past four months, with no other weekend since July 8 -10 even going above $133 million. This isn't the $202 million opening that we saw from Black Panther in February 2018, nor should we expect the amazing legs that were able to get that film to an astonishing $700 million. With that said, expect it to perform strongly throughout the holiday season, likely repeating the five-weekend number-one streak that the first film had, and it shouldn't have any trouble becoming the second-highest-grossing film of the year so far, beating the $411 million cume of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The audience response is strong, with the A CinemaScore falling below the first film's A+ but bouncing back from the B+'s earned by Doctor Strange 2 and Thor: Love and Thunder, which ranked among the worst for the MCU. an improvement over the recent franchise installations, with the aforementioned films coming in at 74% and 64% respectively on Rotten Tomatoes, both at the lower end for Marvel films, while Wakanda Forever's 84% is Black Adamr to franchise norms, though not meeting the high bar set by the first Black Panther' s 96%. The sequel opened to $150 million internationally, which Disney reports is 4% ahead of the first film when comparing like for likes at current exchange rates. Overall, the global cume comes to $330 million. Can it become the year's third film to make it past $1 billion worldwide despite China and Russia, which made up around $124 million of the first film's $682 million international box office, being out of play? It may be tough, but it's not impossible. Legging out past $500 million is plausible on the domestic front (that would be a multiplier of at least 2.7), and another $500 million abroad would be a drop of around $58 million from the original after excluding the two MIA markets. It'd be another story if audiences didn't love the film, but the positive reception suggests that Wakanda Forever will outperform the legs on this year's earlier MCU titles (Multiverse of Madness and Love and Thunder had multipliers of 2.2 and 2.3 respectively).

As for the rest of the box office, there's little to get excited about, with nothing else grossing above $10 million as Hollywood shied away from releasing anything significant not just this weekend but also over the previous two weekends. When Black Panther opened in 2018, there was no counterprogramming that opened the same weekend, but Peter Rabbit and Fifty Shades Freed were in their second weekends and took second and third with $17.5 million and $17.3 million respectively. That weekend had an overall cume of $287 million compared to $208 million this weekend Take away the $22 million gap between the two Black Panther films and there's still a $57 million gap between the two weekends. The difference may not feel that large when a mega blockbuster is propping up the grosses, but the contrast is harsher when the mid-level films are the entire box office as we saw in recent months. Black Adam, which is the biggest grosser of the rough post-summer, pre-Wakanda Forever season, came in second with just $8.6 million. Despite the blockbuster competition that arrived in its fourth weekend, the numbers didn't totally collapse, dropping 53 % for a cume of $151 million. Worldwide it is at $352 million, which isn't a great cume as the grosses start to wind down considering its $200 million budget. Still, it's the biggest of any film since Thor: Love and Thunder, though Wakanda Forever will overtake it any day now. Black Adam came in third place in its fourth weekend, down 29% with $6.1 million, emerging as one of the season's most durable grasses and one of the year's few bright spots when it comes to films for adults. The domestic cume is $56.5 million Fourth place went to Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile, which had a negligible drop of 5% for a $3.2 million sixth weekend and $40.8 million cume., in fact ) , which isn't surprising considering it's the only family film on the market, and it's Black Adam to grossing four times it's $11.4 million opening. Still, the $72.6 million worldwide cume is soft given the $50 million budget, though a number of international markets have yet to open. Finishing up the top five is Smile, which had its biggest weekend drop yet, falling 42% for a $2.3 million seventh weekend. Of course, that's no reason to frown for the horror film, which has a domestic cume of $103 million and a global cume of $ 210 million from a budget of just $20 million. The one new specialty title of note comes from a filmmaker we don't typically associate with the specialty box office: Steven Spielberg. The Beard's semi-autobiographical family drama Black Adam opened in four theaters in New York and Los Angeles to $160k, a $40k average. The film expands to 600 theaters the day before Thanksgiving, and it has the potential to break out in a way that none of the other season's awards contenders have. We're also seeing very solid numbers from Black Adam, which grossed $1.7 million this weekend for a seventh-place finish, bringing its cume to $5.8 million.rrtrter
