2023.06.07 17:55 Ics965 First build in 10 years, does this look ok? Esp ram, cooling, and mobo. Any advice welcome

Hi all,
Making a gaming rig, nothing really unique here, just a lot of high end parts. Ive been doing a lot of research but i'm reaching the point of decision fatigue. It's absolutely insane how the market has exploded in parts/SKUs since the last time i built a PC.
1. What are your concerns?
Does all of this work well together? Specifically CPU/GPU combo, ram/cpu/mobo compatibility,
2. What are you trying to DO with your computer?
Gaming 4k/60fps, and FPS games 1440p/120fps.
Light photo editing
3) What is your budget?
<2600
4) What environmental constraints or priorities do you have?
Would like a small PC that I can mount on the underside of my karbly desk.
5) What else have you considered and written off and why?
I have another 1tb nvme, dell s3220dgf, MKB

2023.06.07 15:49 Ok-Temporary4466 Did they have Wendigo psychosis?

Some interesting reading from wiki-

Psychosis

In historical accounts of retroactively diagnosed Wendigo psychosis, it has been reported that humans became possessed by the wendigo spirit, after being in a situation of needing food and having no other choice besides cannibalism. In 1661, The Jesuit Relations reported:
What caused us greater concern was the news that met us upon entering the Lake, namely, that the men deputed by our Conductor for the purpose of summoning the Nations to the North Sea, and assigning them a rendezvous, where they were to await our coming, had met their death the previous Winter in a very strange manner. Those poor men (according to the report given us) were seized with an ailment unknown to us, but not very unusual among the people we were seeking. They are afflicted with neither lunacy, hypochondria, nor frenzy; but have a combination of all these species of disease, which affects their imaginations and causes them a more than canine hunger. This makes them so ravenous for human flesh that they pounce upon women, children, and even upon men, like veritable werewolves, and devour them voraciously, without being able to appease or glut their appetite—ever seeking fresh prey, and the more greedily the more they eat. This ailment attacked our deputies; and, as death is the sole remedy among those simple people for checking such acts of murder, they were slain in order to stay the course of their madness.[24]
Although in many recorded cases of Wendigo psychosis the individual has been killed to prevent cannibalism from resulting, some Cree folklore recommends treatment by ingestion of fatty animal meats or drinking animal grease; those treated may sometimes vomit ice as part of the curing process.[25]
One of the more famous cases of Wendigo psychosis reported involved a Plains Cree trapper from Alberta, named Swift Runner.[26][27] During the winter of 1878, Swift Runner and his family were starving, and his eldest son died. Twenty-five miles away from emergency food supplies at a Hudson's Bay Company post, Swift Runner butchered and ate his wife and five remaining children.[28] Given that he resorted to cannibalism so near to food supplies, and that he killed and consumed the remains of all those present, it was revealed that Swift Runner's was not a case of pure cannibalism as a last resort to avoid starvation, but rather of a man with Wendigo psychosis.[28] He eventually confessed and was executed by authorities at Fort Saskatchewan.[29]
Another well-known case involving Wendigo psychosis was that of Jack Fiddler, an Oji-Cree chief and medicine man known for his powers at defeating wendigos. In some cases, this entailed killing people with Wendigo psychosis. As a result, in 1907, Fiddler and his brother Joseph were arrested by the Canadian authorities for homicide. Jack committed suicide, but Joseph was tried and sentenced to life in prison. He ultimately was granted a pardon but died three days later in jail before receiving the news of this pardon.[30]
Fascination with Wendigo psychosis among Western ethnographers, psychologists, and anthropologists led to a hotly debated controversy in the 1980s over the historicity of this phenomenon. Some researchers argued that, essentially, Wendigo psychosis was a fabrication, the result of naïve anthropologists taking stories related to them at face value without observation.[31][32] Others have pointed to a number of credible eyewitness accounts, both by Algonquians and others, as evidence that Wendigo psychosis was a factual historical phenomenon.[33]
The frequency of Wendigo psychosis cases decreased sharply in the 20th century as Boreal Algonquian people came into greater and greater contact with European ideologies and more sedentary, less rural, lifestyles.[5]
In his 2004 treatise Revenge of the Windigo on disorders and treatments of the behavioral health industry in the United States and Canada that are peculiar to indigenous people, James B. Waldram wrote,[34]
...no actual cases of windigo psychosis have ever been studied, and Lou Marano's scathing critique in 1985 should have killed off the cannibal monster within the psychiatric annals. The windigo, however, continues to seek revenge for this attempted scholarly execution by periodically duping unsuspecting passers-by, like psychiatrists, into believing that windigo psychosis not only exists but that a psychiatrist could conceivably encounter a patient suffering from this disorder in his or her practice today! Windigo psychosis may well be the most perfect example of the construction of an Aboriginal mental disorder by the scholarly professions, and its persistence dramatically underscores how constructions of the Aboriginal by these professions have, like Frankenstein's monster, taken on a life of their own.
The 10th revision of the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD) classifies "Windigo" as a culture-specific disorder, describing it as "Rare, historic accounts of cannibalistic obsession... Symptoms included depression, homicidal or suicidal thoughts, and a delusional, compulsive wish to eat human flesh... Some controversial new studies question the syndrome's legitimacy, claiming cases were actually a product of hostile accusations invented to justify the victim's ostracism or execution."[35]

As a concept or metaphor

In addition to denoting a cannibalistic monster from certain traditional folklore, some Native Americans also understand the wendigo conceptually. As a concept, the wendigo can apply to any person, idea, or movement infected by a corrosive drive toward self-aggrandizing greed and excessive consumption, traits that sow disharmony and destruction if left unchecked. Ojibwe scholar Brady DeSanti asserts that the wendigo "can be understood as a marker indicating... a person... imbalanced both internally and toward the larger community of human and spiritual beings around them."[36] Out of equilibrium and estranged by their communities, individuals thought to be afflicted by the wendigo spirit unravel and destroy the ecological balance around them. Chippewa author Louise Erdrich's novel The Round House), winner of the National Book Award, depicts a situation where an individual person becomes a wendigo. The novel describes its primary antagonist, a rapist whose violent crimes desecrate a sacred site, as a wendigo who must be killed because he threatens the reservation's safety.
In addition to characterizing individual people who exhibit destructive tendencies, the wendigo can also describe movements and events with similarly negative effects. According to Professor Chris Schedler, the figure of the wendigo represents "consuming forms of exclusion and assimilation" through which groups dominate other groups."[37] This application allows Native Americans to describe colonialism and its agents as wendigos since the process of colonialism ejected natives from their land and threw the natural world out of balance. DeSanti points to the 1999 horror film Ravenous) as an illustration of this argument equating "the cannibal monster" to "American colonialism and manifest destiny". This movie features a character who articulates that expansion brings displacement and destruction as side effects, explaining that "manifest destiny" and "western expansion" will bring "thousands of gold-hungry Americans... over the mountains in search of new lives... This country is seeking to be whole... Stretching out its arms... and consuming all it can. And we merely follow".[38]
As a concept, wendigo can apply to situations other than some Native American-European relations. It can serve as a metaphor explaining any pattern of domination by which groups subjugate and dominate or violently destroy and displace. Joe Lockhard, English professor at Arizona State University, argues that wendigos are agents of "social cannibalism" who know "no provincial or national borders; all human cultures have been visited by shape-shifting wendigos. Their visitations speak to the inseparability of human experience... National identity is irrelevant to this borderless horror."[39] Lockhard's ideas explain that wendigos are an expression of a dark aspect of human nature: the drive toward greed, consumption, and disregard for other life in the pursuit of self-aggrandizement.
Romantic scholar and documentarian Emily Zarka, also a professor at Arizona State University, observes that two commonalities among the indigenous cultures of Algonquian language family speakers are that they are situated in climes where harsh winters are frequent and may be accompanied by starvation. She states that the wendigo symbolically represents three major concepts: it is the incarnation of winter, the embodiment of hunger, and the personification of selfishness.[2]

Boomerang Monkey
This part has to be included along with the Lych Soul rework with Paragons which is finally making it in this update after necessary delays. As Boomerang Paragon’s knockback hits so many times so quickly, we need to make it more reasonable when applied to targets that aren’t immediately destroyed.
Bomb Shooter
MOAB Assassin fills a useful role of a pure long cooldown ‘single target assassination’ in the game, but when compared to something like First Strike it feels a little lacking that it is unable to carry damage through MOAB Layers
Tack Shooter
Blade Shooter has always struggled to find much value without MK or as a step to Maelstrom, so to give it build value on its own we feel like this should be a part of the base value on the upgrade.
Ice Monkey
Lowest tiers of ice monkey are far too effective for their cost against ceramics, with this scaling well all the way to round 100, we feel like ice duration against ceramics needs to be reduced to counter this but for now this reduction will only apply until T3.
Glue Gunner
The Bloon Solver’s rework has been very popular, however, we’d like to have a better lead up into the new mechanics by introducing this earlier at the tier 4 now.
Sniper Monkey
This will allow Cripple MOAB to take out regular MOAB layers in one shot until round 100; for such a slow attacking single target tower we feel this will help top path flex, even if mostly for show.
Monkey Buccaneer
Reworking Grape Shot crosspathing as it gains far too much crosspath value by T2 but then is lacking in purpose at higher tiers, double shot will only work as one extra grape however Destroyer will now apply its full attack rate buff to the grapes and Flagship will equip aspects of Grape Shot on the mini planes.
Monkey Ace
Spectre is shifting a little of the ceramic bonus around into basic all damage at the cost of reduced pierce, which should make up for lack of single target damage while also making the pierce crosspath more necessary when being used for cleanup focus.
Heli Pilot
Even with the map-range advantage, rotors are weak compared to any other constant AoE circle like this. Chinook feels like it’s near a place we are happy with now, however we want another tiny nudge on cost while keeping cash generation value the same. Pushing some higher values on the last Comanche Commander changes as the missile attack is effectively such a small portion of the tower’s total damage late game.
Mortar Monkey
As the Rapid Reload crosspath has actually fallen behind in value compared to Burny Stuff for top path Mortars we want to try a slight stun duration increase as this buffs the base path with a larger benefit to Rapid Reload mortars as a stalling option. Mortar consistency is lacking at x3x making it tough to spend on even though x4x is fairly good, so some of the T4 rate is shifting down to help out with this. As the camo property has grown quite weak and currently Signal Flare is considered the best decamo tool, we want to push back slightly on its cost and by reducing the blast radius of the decamo area while emphasizing crosspathing for effectiveness there.
Super Monkey
As Engineer sentries do this already, newly spawned Mini Avatars from temples will now by default match the target priority of the temple.
Ninja Monkey
We’re changing the Ninja Monkey Paragon’s focus as a fighter against camo, as we feel like a greater strength and tactical value against camo will be the full reveal of all camos rather than all camo removal.
Alchemist
Alchemist Transforming Tonic is in a weird spot with the transformation unable to attack through walls when the base alchemist is able to. Also with this, including a QoL fix for the T5 that currently prevents transformed towers from functioning with target priority.
Druid
While the tornado doesn't do anything to MOABs, it still spends itself on them which wastes a relatively long cooldown, so addressing this flaw. Avatar of wrath doubles the base attack speed before any scaling is applied, but this hasn’t ever applied to the 205 Lightning, so taking care of that as well. Housekeeping - even deep in the forest, it does actually make life better.
Spike Factory
We’ve heard the feedback, so Spiked Mines get a tweak to get more mines exploding but with less pierce on each, to overall increase quality of life in more frequent use but less wasted pierce. This will help out with some of the problems it has scaling into late game super ceramics.
Monkey Village
A minor QoL for cheap Monkeyopolis creation, we included a small base amount of cash production to the generation formula.
Engineer
The 005 crosspath fix in the last update left XXXL Trap slower than previously even if crosspathed to 205, so we are increasing that base 005 slightly to match up the 205 crosspath again so that it isn’t any slower than before.
Beast Handler
As our newest tower to be added to BTD6, we went over feedback for every path and made a large number of adjustments addressing a variety of points.
Gwendolin
Removing the stacking aspect of Gwendolin’s burn damage over time, but increasing the damage as she levels up so that it actually scales up in power now.
Adora
While they are complicated individuals, Adora can now fully appreciate the sacrifice of the newest Monkeys in the struggle against the Bloons.
Admiral Brickell
We aren’t happy with strats that start looking like exploits with frequent sell-replace loops.
Psi
Psi’s stalling out of the end of round is an odd mix of useful / annoying / out of control, so we are for now capping this to a 3 seconds of overtime stalling. Psi’s Psychic Blast ability also has weirdly low pierce for a long cooldown ability with no damage, we are increasing the base pierce greatly but it no longer increases in pierce at Lv7 since the extra pulse brings more pierce anyway.
Event / Boss / Relic / Knowledge
Looking Forward
Five months of 2023 done and dusted, which feels to us like it has zoomed by, perhaps because the Auckland office where the BTD6 team is based has only just reopened after the severe flooding at the end of January. All of Update 36 and the majority of Update 37 were completed while again working from home, but we’re very excited to have the office repairs done, the flood wall almost finished, and the ability to work shoulder to shoulder again on fun new things for the monkeyverse! Here’s the latest gaze into the crystal ball:

2023.06.07 04:43 Ferregar Third Internal Drive Help

Hey y'all,
Working with a custom build for a friend who has to install a third Internal hard drive. It's a Western Digital Red Plus that's confirmed as compatible for internal use. I'm familiar with building, installing and updating hardware for a tower but it's been a while and this one is confusing me.
Drive is installed, SATA is plugged in to the power supply that's successfully powering the two other drives, and its data cable is securely from the drive to the motherboard. However the drive is not being detected.
Can I please get some spit balls on what may be causing the issue? Have specs to share if needed, and photos of the internal setup.
All help is appreciated 🙏

2023.06.07 02:49 KusseKisses Balanceit dog food recommending 1:1 meat to liver?

I'm in the process of charting out a balanced diet for an older dog. Using Balanceit's recipe maker, it's recommending nearly a 1:1 ratio of chicken meat to chicken liver, plus the vegetables and carbs. Does this seem right? I only ever heard of offering organ meats sparingly. Recipe below...
67g Chicken, broilers or fryers, thigh, meat and skin, cooked, stewed 78g Pate, chicken liver, canned 1.29g Nordic Naturals Omega-3 Pet Liquid 5g Oil, corn, industrial and retail, all purpose salad or cooking 59g Rice, white, long-grain, regular, cooked (BalanceIT.com) 7g Carrots, raw 9g Corn, sweet, yellow, cooked, boiled, drained, without salt 10g Peas, green, cooked, boiled, drained, without salt 1.88g Morton Iodized Salt 5.31g Balance IT® Canine (2.5 g/tsp)

Key New Features

  • New Paragon - The Magus Perfectus! (loves casting spells) Some of you know we teased this last year, but we needed more time to balance the art and design required to make this extra special, so we are very pleased to get this live! Wizard Monkey’s Paragon is designed to be a higher level strategic Paragon with powerful ability usage similar to the Doomship.
    • The core of the Magus is a toggle to and from a Draining Beam which deals very small single target damage but absorbs graveyard mana as it damages and destroys Bloons
    • While toggled off from the Drain Beam, Magus attacks with a powerful Arcane Spike that deals massive damage to MOABs and revives Bloons it slays, while a Dark Phoenix circles overhead attacking with Firebomb breath and a radial fireball attack
    • Phoenix Explosion Ability: can be cast to consume the Paragon’s entire graveyard to set all Bloons on screen on fire for 30 seconds and summon one Zombie ZOMG for every 9000 graveyard mana consumed
    • Arcane Metamorphosis Ability: can be used to consume all graveyard mana and transform the Magus briefly into an alternate form which decimates everything with a flame cascade attack; Metamorphosis lasts longer the more mana it consumes
    • Magus was designed for armchair play so it will fill and consume graveyard mana on its own, but our goal was to create more actively controlled Paragon for those who will enjoy microing between Beam on and off and choosing which awesome Ability to unleash and when

New Awesome

  • Happy Birthday BTD6 - On June 14th, BTD6 will celebrate 5 years of monkeytastic fun and strategy! • New Hero Skin - Jiangshi Sauda, a fun new cross-cultural look for Sauda brainstormed by the art team, mixing inspirations from a favorite show and Chinese folklore
  • New Map - Erosion
    • Community designed advanced map Erosion by “I am not an artist” ~ u/TheWiseTroll
    • TheWiseTroll’s original concept proposed land and water but when thinking about map colors and the little stories we think of behind each map, the concept of the polar bear walking back with the shrinking ice was too compelling to do anything else
  • New Quests
    • Birthday Party - Pop the Party Bloon as many times as you can before it escapes
    • Blade Sauda Nowhere - Try out Sauda and learn some of her skills
    • Patch’s Cheap Chimps Challenge - Beat Logs with as little cash spent as you can

  • Least Cash and Least Tier Boss Events
    • We’ve heard feedback about and have been wanting to shake up Boss rules, so here we go!
    • Applying new victory conditions to Boss Events completely changes the focus while still needing the damage output and type to handle each Boss
    • Time still matters, as the secondary time score will break any ties
  • New Trophy Store Items
    • Heroes: Geraldo Pack Mule pet, Quincy Spec Ops Drop In placement
    • Monkeys: Sweden Village Flag
    • Bloons: Party Hat Bloons
    • Game & UI: Vortex Avatar, Sunset Samba 64 Mix music track, Quincy Arrows banner

  • New CT Team Store items
    • Base Props: Treasure Chest
    • Icons: Overclock icon, Archmage Staff icon
    • Frames: Bloon From The Dead frame, Mage Hat frame
  • New Slider
    • Everybody loves sliders, right?
    • After lots of discussion on the team and a fair few player requests, we’ve added a ‘Projectile and Effects Scaling’ accessibility option to main menu Settings
    • This is primarily for accessibility to minimize the size and brightness of projectiles and effects, especially when the screen is crowded with Monkeys and Bloons
    • This is not directly a performance improvement feature, so please do not expect the game to run noticeably better - just noticeably cleaner
    • We tried not to remove key game state indicators but this is ultimately in player control - if you adjust the slider and effects and projectiles make it harder to play the game, please reset the slider until the game is working the way you want
    • It’s also really fun for silly screengrabs, so please post your favorites!

Hero Specific Fixes

Obyn Greenfoot
  • Resolved an issue where Obyn’s Wall of Trees when placed on an intersection looping back around on itself would not be able to hit the children of any targets that passed over it
Psi
  • Resolved a crash that could occur when attacking glued Bloons
Geraldo
  • Resolved an issue where selling Geraldo, and then re-buying him would show the description of the last-viewed store item from before selling him
Platform Specific fixes
  • PC: Beast Handler’s hotkey in the hotkeys menu has been moved up near the rest of the support towers
  • PC: Added a ‘ Monkey Special 2’ hotkey (for towers like Beast Handler, Necromancers & Ace Paragon). By default the Special 1 & Special 2 hotkeys have been assigned to PageUp & PageDown and ordered so that PageUp triggers the upper specialty, and PageDown triggers the lower one
  • Arcade: Resolved a strange one pixel wide black line that can appear above some text characters on the arcade font
  • Chromebook: Game no longer crashes if attempting to login via webview
  • Chromebook: Resolved an issue with bluetooth mice being unable to scroll

Balance Changes

Boomerang Monkey
This part has to be included along with the Lych Soul rework with Paragons which is finally making it in this update after necessary delays. As Boomerang Paragon’s knockback hits so many times so quickly, we need to make it more reasonable when applied to targets that aren’t immediately destroyed.
  • Boomerang Paragon knockback amount reduced 3 > 1
Bomb Shooter
MOAB Assassin fills a useful role of a pure long cooldown ‘single target assassination’ in the game, but when compared to something like First Strike it feels a little lacking that it is unable to carry damage through MOAB Layers
  • x4x MOAB Assassin ability passes through MOAB layers
  • x4x MOAB Assassin ability explosion centers around the impact target
Tack Shooter
Blade Shooter has always struggled to find much value without MK or as a step to Maelstrom, so to give it build value on its own we feel like this should be a part of the base value on the upgrade.
  • x3x Blade Shooter pierce increased from 6 > 8
Ice Monkey
Lowest tiers of ice monkey are far too effective for their cost against ceramics, with this scaling well all the way to round 100, we feel like ice duration against ceramics needs to be reduced to counter this but for now this reduction will only apply until T3.
  • 000 Ice Monkey freeze duration reduced by 50% on ceramics
  • All T3 Ice Monkeys increase freeze duration on ceramics from 50 > 100%
  • 203 Icicles crosspath now gains camo prio
Glue Gunner
The Bloon Solver’s rework has been very popular, however, we’d like to have a better lead up into the new mechanics by introducing this earlier at the tier 4 now.
  • 4xx Bloon Dissolver now creates puddles on track leading up to Bloon Solver, puddles deal 1 damage, all other stats and crosspath benefits are the same.
Sniper Monkey
This will allow Cripple MOAB to take out regular MOAB layers in one shot until round 100; for such a slow attacking single target tower we feel this will help top path flex, even if mostly for show.
  • 5xx Cripple MOAB damage increased from 80 > 280
Monkey Buccaneer
Reworking Grape Shot crosspathing as it gains far too much crosspath value by T2 but then is lacking in purpose at higher tiers, double shot will only work as one extra grape however Destroyer will now apply its full attack rate buff to the grapes and Flagship will equip aspects of Grape Shot on the mini planes.
  • 210 Grape Shot total projectiles reduced from 10 -> 6
  • 310 Destroyer also reduced from 10 > 6 grapes
  • 310 Destroyer now increases grape attack rate twice as much, matching increase to the regular attack
  • 410 Aircraft Carrier planes radial attack now fires an arc of grapes instead of darts
  • 410 Aircraft Carrier planes radial Emission Angle 360 > 90
  • 410 Aircraft Carrier planes radial projectile count 8 > 6
  • 410 Aircraft Carrier plane grape projectile speed 100 > 200
  • 420 Aircraft Carrier planes radial projectile art: dart > hot grape
  • 420 Aircraft Carrier planes radial damage type Sharp > Fire
  • 400 Aircraft Carrier plane radials damage 1 > 2
  • 4xx Aircraft Carrier missiles now follow tower target priority
Monkey Ace
Spectre is shifting a little of the ceramic bonus around into basic all damage at the cost of reduced pierce, which should make up for lack of single target damage while also making the pierce crosspath more necessary when being used for cleanup focus.
  • xx4 Spectre Dart damage increased 3 > 4
  • xx4 Spectre Dart ceramic bonus reduced 2 > 1
  • xx4 Spectre Dart pierce reduced 15 > 10
  • xx4 Spectre Bomb damage increased 2 > 3
  • xx4 Spectre Bomb ceramic bonus reduced 4 > 3
  • xx4 Spectre Bomb pierce reduced 30 > 20
  • 302 Razor Rotors will now benefit from the faster firing crosspath
  • 3xx Razor Rotors cooldown rate 0.75 > 0.5
  • x4x Support Chinook price reduced from $10500 > 9500
  • x4x Support Chinook supply crate cash generated reduced $1650 > 1,550
  • x4x Support Chinook max uses per round reduced from 3 > 2
  • xx4 & xx5 Comanche mini's follow the target priority set on their main Heli
  • xx5 Comanche Commander missile damage 7 > 15
  • xx5 Comanche Commander missile moab bonus 5 > 8
  • xx5 Comanche Commander mini's missile dmg 5 > 15
  • xx5 Comanche Commander mini's missile moab bonus 5 > 8
  • 4xx The Big One stun duration non-MOABs increased from 0.5s > 0.75
  • 5xx The Biggest One stun duration MOAB increased from 0.3s > 0.5
  • 5xx The Biggest One stun duration BFB increased from 0.2s > 0.3
  • 5xx The Biggest One stun duration DDT increased from 0.2s > 0.3
  • x3x Heavy Shells attack delay reduced from 1.08 > 0.81
  • x4x Artillery Battery attack rate buff reduced from ¼ to ⅓ (remains the same rate: 0.27)
  • xx3 Signal flare cost increased $700 > 800
  • xx4 Shattering Shells price reduced from $11,000 > 10900
  • xx3 Signal Flare decamo radius reduced from 50 > 43
  • 103 Signal Flare decamo pierce increased by 5 > 10
  • xx4 Shattering Shells burn DoT deals moab bonus +5
Super Monkey
As Engineer sentries do this already, newly spawned Mini Avatars from temples will now by default match the target priority of the temple.
  • 4xx Sun Temple's Magic Sacrifice mini Sun Avatars when placed will spawn with the same target prio as their parent tower
Ninja Monkey
We’re changing the Ninja Monkey Paragon’s focus as a fighter against camo, as we feel like a greater strength and tactical value against camo will be the full reveal of all camos rather than all camo removal.
  • Ascended Shadow now grants global camo detection for all your towers
  • Ascended Shadow no longer strips camo from Bloons with every attack
  • Ascended Shadow main attack gains bonus to camo +6
  • Ascended Shadow Flash Bomb Explosion gains bonus to camo +20
  • Ascended Shadow Flash Bomb Shurikens gains bonus to camo +16
  • Ascended Shadow Sticky Bomb Projectile gains bonus to camo +3200
  • Ascended Shadow Sticky Bomb Explosion gains bonus to camo +700
  • Ascended Shadow now deals 25% damage to all non-Boss MOABs that spawn
Alchemist
Alchemist Transforming Tonic is in a weird spot with the transformation unable to attack through walls when the base alchemist is able to. Also with this, including a QoL fix for the T5 that currently prevents transformed towers from functioning with target priority.
  • x4x Transforming Tonic transformed alchemist can now ignore line of sight
  • x5x Total Transformation towers transformed by the x5x will keep their Target Priority
  • 3xx Druid of the Storm’s Tornado no longer targets MOAB-class Bloons
  • x3x Druid of the Jungle no longer pops Lead Bloons without 130 crosspath
  • x3x Jungle Vine follows target prio of tower instead of strong
  • x3x Jungle Vine defaults tower to strong priority when purchased
  • 205 Avatar of Wrath base Heart of Thunder attack rate increased 2.3s > 1.15
Spike Factory
We’ve heard the feedback, so Spiked Mines get a tweak to get more mines exploding but with less pierce on each, to overall increase quality of life in more frequent use but less wasted pierce. This will help out with some of the problems it has scaling into late game super ceramics.
  • 4xx Spiked Mines pierce increased from 12 > 20
  • 4xx Spiked Mines explosion pierce reduced from 40 > 30
  • 4xx Spiked Mines DoT damage increased from 1 > 10
  • 5xx Super Mines explosion pierce remains at 60
  • 5xx Super Mines DoT damage increased from 1000 > 2500
Monkey Village
A minor QoL for cheap Monkeyopolis creation, we included a small base amount of cash production to the generation formula.
  • xx5 Monkeyopolis income formula now includes a base +$2500 minimum
Engineer
The 005 crosspath fix in the last update left XXXL Trap slower than previously even if crosspathed to 205, so we are increasing that base 005 slightly to match up the 205 crosspath again so that it isn’t any slower than before.
  • xx5 XXXL Trap attack cooldown reduced from 5.8s > 4.6
Beast Handler
As our newest tower to be added to BTD6, we went over feedback for every path and made a large number of adjustments addressing a variety of points.
  • 3xx Great White thrash rate benefits from speed buffs
  • 3xx Great White damage increased 4 > 8
  • 3xx Great White max extra damage from merge increased 8 > 16
  • 3xx Great White max attack rate buff from merge increased 0.20634 > 0.38
  • 3xx Great White extra thrash knockback duration from merge increased 0.1 > 0.2
  • 4xx Orca thrash damage increased 20 > 30
  • 4xx Orca thrash max extra damage from merge increased 40 > 60
  • 4xx Orca max attack rate buff from merge increased 0.37829 > 0.38
  • 4xx Orca thrash radius increased 20 > 24
  • 5xx Megalodon price reduced from 55,000 > 45,000
  • 5xx Megalodon thrash radius increased 30 > 36
  • 5xx & x5x Beast handler paths are now overclockable
  • x4x and x5x Max Merge Bonus: Overkill damage on MOABs now distributes to the children of that target
  • xx1 Gyrfalcon path deals +1 damage to Regrows to stop accidental infinite regrow farms
  • xx3 Golden Eagle pierce increased 12 > 15
  • xx3 Golden Eagle pierce range increased 24 > 30
  • xx3 Golden Eagle ceramic pierce penalty reduced from +3 > 1
  • xx3 Golden Eagle Max Merge Bonus: Now grabs MOABs with pierce penalty +14
Gwendolin
Removing the stacking aspect of Gwendolin’s burn damage over time, but increasing the damage as she levels up so that it actually scales up in power now.
  • Lv6 Gwendonlin main attack DoT stack count 0 > 1
  • Lv6 Gwendonlin main attack DoT damage increased from 1 > 2
  • Lv9 Gwendonlin main attack DoT damage increased from 1 > 4
  • Lv10 Gwendonlin main attack DoT damage now increases by 1 per additional level
Adora
While they are complicated individuals, Adora can now fully appreciate the sacrifice of the newest Monkeys in the struggle against the Bloons.
  • Lv7 Blood Sacrifice can now be used on Beast Handlers
Admiral Brickell
We aren’t happy with strats that start looking like exploits with frequent sell-replace loops.
  • Upon Selling Brickell - all of her placed Mines are now expired along with her as well
  • If no Bloons are left unpopped on screen aside from ones Psi is currently holding & destroying, these Bloons will be destroyed after a maximum of 3 seconds
  • Lv3 Psychic Blast pierce increased from 50 > 200
  • Lv7 Psychic Blast pierce increased from 100 > 200
Event / Boss / Relic / Knowledge
  • All Lych Soul variations can now be stunned/slowed by paragon tier upgrades
Looking Forward
Five months of 2023 done and dusted, which feels to us like it has zoomed by, perhaps because the Auckland office where the BTD6 team is based has only just reopened after the severe flooding at the end of January. All of Update 36 and the majority of Update 37 were completed while again working from home, but we’re very excited to have the office repairs done, the flood wall almost finished, and the ability to work shoulder to shoulder again on fun new things for the monkeyverse! Here’s the latest gaze into the crystal ball:
  • Update 38 Key Content
    • New Boss - Phayze: another all new Boss concept and play style, not giving any other hints apart from the name itself
    • Summer fun: a new Brickell hero skin and a waterpark map aimed toward Intermediate to help keep northern hemisphere summer cool
    • Quests: continuing to build new quest system features and adding a few new Quests to the list
  • Update 39 Key Content
    • Map Editor: under construction since last year with internal systems testing happening during 38.0 development, we are super excited to put map creation tools in player hands on as many platforms as possible when it goes live
    • New Hero - Spirit Walker: another unique design that we’re sandboxing already to make sure it has as much balance and art iteration as possible, again no hints other than the name
  • Update 40 Key Content
    • New Paragon - Monkey Sub: we’ve tagged sub as the next Paragon, so tell the Navarch to stop hoarding all of the Portable Lakes!
    • Stretch Goals - Boss Rush Team Event and CT Themes: lots of unknowns 3 updates out but we have strong plans for a new Team event and new parameters for Contested Territory that will make each CT more dynamic - anything that we don’t get done by end of year will have strong groundwork for next year
  • Console
    • Getting closer to submission on Xbox and PlayStation but this has been slow going. We’ve added another programmer and are working even more closely with platform partners to get through our last issues and launch as soon as possible, but that’s likely at least another 2 months. Switch is still a consideration depending on response to Xbox and PlayStation, as it will require additional bespoke development.

2023.06.07 01:14 Tigerlily535 36 F Looking to meet new people and who doesn’t love mail from a friend.

I am hoping to connect with new people around my age. I have always loved anything to do with animals and nature. I have a plant collection and garden that give me lots of joy. I also have many pets who I am happy to talk about. I mean seriously so many shenanigans to share as they are always up to something and the possibilities for cute pet photos is endless. I also enjoy reading mostly fantasy, sci-fi and romance (cliché I know, but I don’t care I love it 🥰 ) but open to a lot of different things. I also enjoy crafty things and have many different craft supplies. I always love an excuse to buy cute paper and stickers. I was born and raised in Ontario, Canada. Open to a penpal from anywhere in the world but some ability to speak English preferred. That said I love learning about new languages and cultures and would put effort into learning as well. I’m hoping to find meaningful connections and love deep conversations. If you have made it this far congratulations 😂 I don’t think I’ve talked about myself this much ever. I am a funny and unique individual once you get to know me. I have a flair for the dramatic and have been told I’m a great storyteller. I’m in the process of writing a book called Chronically Healing: Learning to Live after Diagnosis which documents my health journey over the course of my life and what I’ve learned along the in hopes that one day it will help encourage and inspire others along their journey as well. I will write the odd poem or craft the odd song as well. Music has been and still is a huge part of my life. I enjoy many different types of music and always love learning about new bands/ artists. So please give me all the suggestions. I don’t have a preference for gender and am a safe space and ally for anyone in the LGBTQIA community. I believe we are all connected and that we all must come together instead of fighting with one another. I am looking for someone to share the mundane day to day happenings and making my trips to the mailbox more fun and interesting. With everything happening today it would be nice to spread some joy and kindness. I’m confident this will find who it was meant to. Can’t wait to get to know you.

2023.06.07 00:00 Clerk_Sam_Lowry Trip Report- 13 days Tokyo/Kyoto/Hakone/Nagoya (Ghibli Park) /Hiroshima with a 2 year-old toddler. (plus day-trips to Nara and Osaka)

Trip Report- 13 days Tokyo/Kyoto/Hakone/Nagoya (Ghibli Park) /Hiroshima with a 2 year-old toddler. (plus day-trips to Nara and Osaka)
I love reading other peoples' trip reports and thought it might be useful to share my experiences travelling with my wife and toddler in Japan. We used Shinkasens for most of our travel between cities but did rent a car in the middle so that we could drive to a rural Onsen and then to Shirakawa-Go from Nagoya. (We also briefly rented a car to visit 3 plaaces around Hakone, too).
First of all, traveling with a toddler in japan is great. Our kid loves trains and busses and got tons of attention and shouts of "KAWAI!!" from friendly people everywhere we went. She even got a lullaby sung to her by a Japanese grandmother as she dozed on a city bus in Kyoto. She never had to pay for any bus fares or train fares. (technically she was a "lap baby" on the Shinkansens).
We read a book of etiquette before we went and it was very useful to know. I am sure most of these tips are stickied elsewhere , but things like "don't point with one finger, always grasp cups with both hands, don't wipe your face/mouth with the hand-cloth, don't talk loudly in restaurants or on trains, keep yen bills neat and flat and use the trays provided when paying for things," etc, were good to know before we went. We brought and carried a "point-and-say" translation book but only used it once; generally Google Translate worked great for images of menus and signs. (and many restaurants have English versions of menus, or use digital menus on iPad that can switch to English. ) Google maps handled most of our navigation needs without issues too, both via train and car. We parked the stroller outside most restaurants or folded it and brought it just inside the door if the weather was bad.
Prep work --
The only major prep work we did before leaving was to buy our JR pass and alert our banks to the dates that we would be in Japan so that our credit and debit cards would work. We had no problems getting cash from the ATM machines at 7-11 or at the Airport. We reserved all hotels/AirBnB/Onsen/Car Rentals beforehand. Also bought SkyTree tickets before departing. We stayed up until 4am to get a ticket to Ghibli's Grand Warehouse -- fortunately only one ticket was needed since our child was under 4 and my wife wasn't interested. We rented a mobile hotspot device from Sakura Mobile before leaving America and it was waiting for us at our first hotel in Tokyo. We dropped the hotspot and charger in a mailbox in a pre-paid envelope before leaving Kyoto.
Major tips -- no need to pack lots of snacks or water each day , since vending machines and 7-11 stores and similar are ubiquitous. Do pack paper towels/ Napkins and extra plastic bags for carrying wet diapers and trash, as public trash cans are almost non-existant. (and when they do exist, they are often just for aluminum and PET plastic bottles) Throw away trash where you bought it, (for things like satay skewers) or bring it home to your hotel. The "pack-it-out" mindset takes a little getting used to, but the results -- a society seemingly without litter-- are superb. Having a lightweight , easily foldable stroller made this trip much easier. Our child often slept in the stroller, and being able to quickly collapse and carry it was key to getting up and down the many sets of stairs in the train stations. It also occasionally doubled as a luggage cart for us. Packing light is key; we picked hotels and AirBnBs that had laundry options to allow us to carry a minimum of stuff. (and no need to bring laundry soap; the washing machines dispense it automatically) My wife wished she had a Japanese-style suitcase with 4 roller-wheels, but I think we did fine with our backpacks , etc.
In general, we didn't have much trouble finding things for my daughter to eat; she loves noodles and dumplings, and even got really into red snapper sushi one night. (basically she loves anything she can dip in soy sauce). Chicken Karage was usually an easy thing to find and feed to her, as were the egg salad Sandos, fresh fruit, and various rice balls from 7-11. Oddly, she also really loved the "pickle-on-a-stick" things that were pretty common in outdoor markets. (I think we got them in both Kyoto and Osaka)
Flights - we flew JAL to from LAX to Narita outbound, and returned on JAL (operated by AA) from Hiroshima to Haneda to LAX. The outbound flight was great; the JAL service was impeccable and they gave my child a model airplane which kept her occupied for hours. We gate-checked our folding stroller on the outbound flight -- the gate clerk put into a plastic bag for us just before departure,
The return flight (operated by American Airlines ) was a step down, but still fine. Transferring planes at Haneda for the return was a little more of a hassle than we had expected becuase you have to exit one terminal, walk a while, exit the building and then get on a free bus, and then go back through security at another terminal. On the plus side, the Haneda international terminal has a padded play area that my daughter liked near the duty free shops. Becuase our return journey was two flights, gate-checking the stroller was not possible, but instead, after measuring its size, we were able to keep it as a carry-on for both legs. (had it been larger, JAL said they would have met us at Haneda with an airport loaner stroller, something we saw other parents using in Hiroshinma and Haneda)
Highlights from each city (focusing on things that my child loved)
Tokyo -- our first night in Japan was a little disorienting: the Tokyo metro station is like a gigantic multi-layer mall-labryinth, and since none of the maps seem to show the "big picture" finding our way to the correct exit lugging luggage was a bit of a challenge the first time . We went back down that night for our fist meal, and by the next day we were practically experts, and were even able to find our way to Ramen Street (on level B1) for lunch and --after waiting in line for about 20 minutes-- slurp some great noodles.
Our first morning we wanted to visit the imperial Palace Gardens, but discovered it is closed on Mondays. Stil, just seeing its moat and stone walls was impressive. We walked to the Children's Science and Technology Museum near Budokan, and our duaghter loved operating cranes and turning cranks of giant Rube-Goldberg machines. (some with bowling-ball sized steel balls moving around). Most of the exhibits were in Japanese, but the fact that this wasn't a common tourist destination made it interesting to visit. On the way home for naps we ate at a random underground food court under an office building and learned how to order a food ticket from a machine for eating at a restaraunt. (a key skill!)
We next headed up to the Owl Cafe in Akihabara, mostly as an excuse to have a visit to Akhiabara, and found it was closed, but seeing the electronics stores and nightlife of Akhihabara was fun. As you might expect, my daughter loved getting Gacha Balls from vending machines (both in Akihabara and everywhere else )
Our second day we spent the morning hunting for the legendary "Elephant Playground" (worth the hunt!) and then went to the nearby Tokyo Childrens' Toy Museum. This was a fantastic combo, and I would recommend anyone with young kids in Tokyo do both. From there we walked to Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden, which was a wonderful oaisis, full of picknicking families and couples. We explored the tropical greenhouse and then had a well-needed rest under a tree near a tea-house in the traditial japanese garden section Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden also was conveniently close to the Shinjuku rail station, which was imporant because we had Sky-Tree tickets that evening, and we headed there directly. We didn't have time to do any shopping or visit the two museums recommended to us near the skytree (Tobacco and Salt and the Tobu rail museum) But we did have what I consider my favorite meal of the trip: beers and gyoza and molten-lava hot takoyaki at a tiny( 6- seat) izakaya a few minutes south of the Skytree. (i'd recommend it by name but it was completely in japanasese and I am not sure I can now accurately ID it)
The third day we visted the Tusikiji outer fish market -- we got there early and and it was quickly full of tourists and good food. (many different kinds of grilled things on sticks, as well as raw oysters, etc) I was amazed that the public bathrooms there were sparkling clean -- as they were throughout almost the entire trip. My daughter loved getting an ice-cream drink at John Lennon's favorite coffiee shop (Yonemoto). On the way back thorugh Ginza we bought an enormous fig wrapped like the crown jewels from one of Japnan's famous fruit-gift stores. It cost about $9, but was absoulutely delicious. (it was crazy to see $200 watermelons and $170 muskmellons in the same store)
We also took this time in Ginza to do one of the things on my bucket list -- buy an overpriced gift fruit from a fancy Japanese store. We bought the second cheapest thing in there - a single giant fig, and I think it cost about $9. (totally worth it!) . it was just fun to ogle $80 spherical watermelons, and other beautiful, but incredibly expensive fruit.
Later that afternoon visited/saw Shibuya crossing, ate decent and very inexpensive sushi at a 3rd floor conveyor-belt restaurant, and went to Harjuku. (not in that order) Harajuku was chaotic fun, but equally fun was the long peaceful forest walk to visit the Meji Ginku shrine that starts just outside Harjuki station . By now we were experts at tossing coins, bowing, clapping, and praying in the appropriate cycle. (something the 2 year old seemed to quite enjoy). We also knew from our guidebook that we were supposed to walk only on the sides of the path at Meji Ginku -- the middle is reserved for the Gods.
NAGOYA/GHIBLI - We took a direct bus from Nagoya station (cash accepted, Pasmo Cards also accepted) out to the sprawling expo grounds that surround the Ghibli exhibits. Our 2.5 year old loved Studio Ghibli Parks Gand Warehouse, particularly the miniature town where she could run around and pretend to drive a train and serve beer at a drafthouse. There was a furry Catbus to sit on, (of course) as well as another padded Catbus to jump around on for a few minutes with shoes off. Totoro is the only Ghibli character she knows well, and she loved finding hidden Totoros and (and a giant bar-tending one) around the Warehouse.
Arguably, Ghibli park was a little disappointing for us two adults , becuase it was pouring rain when we visited making the long walks between areas less than fun. And despite having moved heaven and earth to get a timed ticket, there still were long lines (~40 min) for areas inside the "Grand Warehouse." It was interesting for me to see the sketches and reference photos a used to make each cell of Ghibli animation realisitic ... but it was annoying and crazy that most areas of the warehouse totally forbad taking photographs. Much of the rest of the Grand Warehouse was just lines for people to take selfies in front of recreated scenes from the movies for posting on social media.
We had watched or re-watched all the Ghibli movies prior to our trip, so we were well prepared, but overall I would say that if you can't get tickets to go to the Grand Warehouse, don't feel bad. (There are many many more magical and wonderful things everywhere else in Japan, and your 2 -year-old will love them just as much. )
HAKONE/SHIRAKAWA-GO/ HIDA (Onsen)
We took a Shinkasen south from Tokyo to Hakone, and spent a day there with a family friend who showed us an ancient tea-house along the old imperial road, a famous Shinto shrine, a deliicious meal, and of course, Mount Hakone with its black eggs, sulfurous fumes, and melty black ice cream. The toddler loved the eggs and the ice cream, of course! For me, sitting and eating tea and mochi in the deep forest along the royal road was like being transported back into a historical Kurosawa film.
If you visit Hakone, I would encourage you to get into the woods and do some hiking. It's a gorgeous area. Apparently the japanese love to drink and tour Lake Ashi on a pair of pirate ships. which added a comic aspect to our visit to the much-photographed Hakone Shrine's Tori gate.
We knew we wanted to visit the truly rural areas of Honshu, so we reserved a night at a remote Onsen near Shirakawa-Go. The drive from Nagoya was stunningly beautiful, traffic was light, and because we had rented a toll transponder along with the rental car, we could just breeze through the toll-booths (which are located at the off-ramps) . Seeing the untouched mountains coexisting with sleek new road tunnels and breathtaking shining bridges made me realize how decrepit American infrastructure has become.
IT was a bit stressful to drive on the left hand side of the road, but conversely, It was great to be able to pull over at will. For example, we could stop at at a small town outside of Nagoya for a delicious prix fixe breakfast at "cafe Pierrot" and again later to see and visit a beautiful riverside Shinto shrine along the road. The car gave us the freedom to and be able to just stop and explore and let our child play in the shallow water surrounded by green hills. Driving in the rural areas wasn't too bad, and doing so let us see a whole other world that we would have missed had we stuck to the trains. For example, we visited a delightful outdoor morning market in the village of Miyagawa and bought fresh produce and some delightful snacks (including fish-shaped custard-filled mini-donuts) from the vendors followed by an impromptu picnic along the riverbank.
On this portion of the trip we also got to experience the Japan's wonderful rest-stop cuisine -- you use a ticket machine to select some items, hand them to a chef behind the counter, and in a few minutes your number is called . We had some delicious Japanese pizza (shaped like a elongated, puffy taco ) fragrant beef curry, and a "Miso Katsu" dish too.
Later we would stop at another rest stop and discover that it had an absolutely epic set of slides and tunnels built into the hillside. You borrow a plastic sled and then slide about 150 feet down a green carpet. It was hearwarming to see how kind and welcoming the japanese children were to our daughter, helping her to slide and showing her how to play and explore the tunnels. Arguably this was my child's favorite part of the entire trip.
Shirakawa Go was great fun for the whole family -- it was definately touristy, but it was great to be able to stroll and relax and learn about Japan's past. (Parking closes at 5pm, though!) We had only a few hours there but I think we would have enjoyed an entire day of strolling and snacking and learning. Interestingly all the parking attendents there seem to be senior citizens.
Our Ondsen was in a small farming comunity outside Hida, surrounded by orchards, mountains, and rice paddies. We were the only non-japanese that we saw there, and it was a little challenging to keep our toddler ccorralled during the formal meals (served in a common area, not in our rooms). As expected, the indoor slippers provided were a bit small for my size-11 feet, but we had a great time in a beautiful, secluded place.
Staying overnight got us a ticket to also visit the large and well-maintained municipal baths just up the road. (each side of which had about 7 pools of various temperatures and medicinal properties) There was a wonderful hiking trail that looped through the deep forest around the town. One of my biggest regrets of the trip is that we did not have more time to hike and explore these lush, pristine mountain woods -- I think I enjoyed our hikes here as much as I did the onsen baths.
The driving portion of our trip ended on the western coast of Honshu, at Kanazawa, but we didn't see much of that city other than a gas station and the rental car return before taking the "thunderbird" train down to Kyoto. (not quite as fast as some shinkasen, but very comfortable).
KYOTO and day-trips:
We had three delightful days in Kyoto, along including day trips by rail to Osaka (to see the market, eat okinomiyaki, and climb Osaka Castle) and Nara (to walk aound and feed the deer in the park and then the koi at a a beautiful botanical garden, stroll through another temple, and to eat the best Udon noodles of the trip while siting outdoors in the forest. In Nara, we also stumbled upon a wonderful Beatles-only vintage record shop called "B-Sels" on an upper floor just across from Nara station, and listened to a street performance of Shamisen music at the station itself. Nara, like Shirakawa-Go, was full of busloads of tourists, but that didn't make it any less of a great experience for us.
Kyoto itself was wonderful to explore on foot -- I won't go into exhaustive detail, but our child loved walking and being pushed in the stroller to various Temples and loved the view from Kyoto tower. (and the Gatcha ball souvenir tower even more!) . She liked the path through the bamboo forest (crowded with tourists) and loved "hiking" through the beautiful and less crowded gardens of Tenryu-Ji temple -- part of which has remained unchanged since the 14th century. We skipped the monkey park.
In Kyoto proper, we walked through Chion-In Buddhist temple , took our shoes off and bagged them, and observed a ceremony -- it was interesting to see how similar it was to ceremonies in America, with the same incense, syllable recitation, and wood-block time-keeping interspersed with bowl-gong ringing .... but on a much grander scale. The size of the wooden buildings is epic, rivaling the stone cathedrals of Europe. Because of the large numbers of steps to get from the massive Sanmon gate to the main building of the shrine, my wife and I took turns exploring and let the toddler play along the paths of the temple's small tea-garden next door.
Hiroshima-
Finally, we spent the last two days of our trip in Hiroshima. It was shocking and surreal to get off the train underground and suddenly be hit with an overwhelming smell of burning -- there was construction work all around Hiroshima station and I don't know if it was from digging pylons down into subterranean ashes, or just from some other more modern aspect of the construction As someone whose worldview was shaped by reading Barefoot Gen as a child, visiting Hiroshima was an important and somber part of our trip.
It was interesting to see that the bulk of the visitors to the Peace Museum visitors seemed to be Japanese school groups. Of course, most of the photos and exhibits museum went "over the head" of our 2/yo child. (she wasn't frightened, just not interested). She did enjoy ringing the peace Bell outside and seeing the collections of paper cranes. We bought books to help share the experience with her again once she is older.
In any event, Hiroshima is a charming city showing no outward signs of being apocalyptically devastated (except at the Peace Memorial Dome) and there is an excellent restaurant district just around the corner from the main train station, with many small restaurants that are open late.
The people and proprietors of Hiroshima seemed particularly kind to us; it's more relaxed there than any of the other cities we viisted. Our chid loved was the "Children's 5-day Science Museum" about a quater mile away from Peace Park that has a lot of hands-on exhibits and two stories of climbing tunnels. We did not do the planetarium there, as it is in japanese-language only and we had limited time.
For us, the highlight of our time in Hiroshima was taking the long ferry to Miyajima directly from Peace Park and then wandering around the narrow streets of Miyajima in the afternoon and evening. It was great to see the oyster beds being worked from the ferry and then later dine on delicious grilled and fried Miyajima oysters.
Our child loved the ferry rides and wandering around Miyajima (there are deer there too) but she also slept for much of our time on the island. The return ferry was part of the JR rail network and so we could use our JR passes for that. (its a short, straighter route).
All in all, Japan was very kid friendly, as long as you can quickly and easily fold up your stroller, and we loved our time in every city we visited. (and could have easily spent much more time in any of them).
Other Thoughts: We bought the Japan Rail Pass, but probably didn't save much money by doing so; My wife estimates that we about broke even with the number of shinkansen, trains, and ferry-rides we used. It was a nice security blanket, though, to know that if we missed a train it wouldn't cost us anything. (but we never missed any trains) . For non JR-line trains, we used a pair of "PASMO" cards. Pasmo cards can also be used at other random retail places as a stored-cash card. When you go through the gates, you must look for ones that say "IC" if you are using a Pasmo card and tap against the NFC pad with it. Using Pasmo is nice because the card is durable (unlike the paper JR Pass) and you can load up enough money for multiple trips on the card.
We use T-mobile, and our plan included 5 GB of "high speed data" while in japan but we weren't sure we would have good service for our rural drive, so we gout a WiFi hotspot from Sakura Mobile. This worked fine -- and its speeds was always faster than T-Mobile's coverage when tested. The hotspot generally would last about 20 hours on one charge. But honestly T-Mobile's Japan coverage was probably good enough that the hotspot was an unnecessary expense; we often used it instead of the hotspot and only came close to the 5GB limit on our last day. If I were on a tighter budget, a shorter trip, or knew I wouldn't be in remote areas, I would skip the Hotspot and just use T-mobile.
TLDR: Tokyo Toy Museum is fantastic for little ones. Ghibli Park (Grand Warehouse) is fine, but our kid probably had just as much fun on many other Japanese playgrounds. If you do choose to drive, don't miss the Japanese rest stops which can be fantastic with fresh food and jungle gyms and slides. Our kid may remember little from the trip except the toys she took home from GATCHA balls, but we have a lifetime of memories gained. Don't miss the Udon in Nara at "Mizuya Chaya", just outside the beautiful Manyo Botanical Gardens.

2023.06.06 23:28 HamwichSandwich m19 lost weight unhealthily 2 years ago and gained some of it back need advice on how to keep it off and look better overall

for context i m19 5’10 210 (currently) have bipolar disorder and have suffered from BED (binge eating disorder), bulimia and body dysmorphia for a long time something i went to treatment for and have since been on a journey of overcoming. In 2021 i got put on bipolar medication and one of the side effects of this medication or one of the realizations i got out of it was that i was a 235 lb 17 year old who didn’t know how to eat properly, didn’t take care of himself, and was constantly making himself sick in a vain attempt to cure what i thought the main problem was (my weight). I realized i needed to make a change.
In the months following that epiphany i had about my life i lost 50 lbs, with my lowest weight being 183 in october of 2021 down from my highest weight of 235 in april of that year.
The way i lost weight wasn’t the healthiest it was a lot of behaviors that i wouldn’t recommend and that i’m very lucky didn’t take as much of a toll on my health as they could have, such as stimulant and laxative abuse, going on eating disorder twitter and hoping that the people there would call me a fat f*** and give me the motivation i (thought i) needed to lose 50 lbs. This worked in the short term but was absolute hell for my self esteem.
At the end of the day i never reached my goal weight of 180 and instead of looking good i looked sickly and pale.
(pictures included in another post that i will link to soon)
Not to give too much detail but i ended up having to go to a rehabilitation center for my eating disorder where they helped identify the reasons behind my purging and it helped but i gained back to around 205 (because it was winter and they didn’t let us do any physical activity or go outside at all, i can explain further in the comments) when i got out and i was- well not as devastated as i thought i’d be. But still, it did feel like a step backwards.
I ended up going to an outpatient program after and through just eating consistently breakfast lunch and dinner and walking a lot (cardio seems to be my thing) i went back down to 190.
I stayed at 190 for about 4 months until my doctor switched me off one of my medications and the binge purge cycle started to creep itself back up after a couple weeks. I was drinking a lot of milkshakes at this time. I went up to 215.
My doctor recently prescribed me a new medication about 2 weeks ago that has suppressed my appetite a lot and as a result of that plus consistent work in the gym this past 5 days i have lost 5 lbs.
I’ve included some pictures of me at various weights including now, pre “epiphany”, and the 2 ish years i flip flopped between the different weights.
I need advice, any advice, on how to cut back and gain muscle, maybe what look/build i should go for based off my stats and how i look.
I’m willing to be loseit’s personal project, i feel i have potential, but i also have no clue what i’m doing in the gym or with the food i eat, etc.
For reference of what i’d like to go for im really into 70s/60s bohemian or disco clothing and attire, but i also like the hippie or grunge aesthetics (ik they are very different) (well except for the dirt).
TLDR: I want to be loseit’s pet project or at least i want some advice that can help get me where i want to be. Any advice at all, gym wise or other wise is appreciated

^ not sure if this is allowed but this post has the photos of me i wanted to share

2023.06.06 20:20 igorekk handpicked for Berlin in May (mostly startups/career related)

After skipping April, here are some inspiration snippets from Berlin, Germany and wider. Career and other cool insights. Here is March.

Week of 1st (May)

  1. 🤔 Do you know any shortcuts/tips/tricks on how to get an appointment at Ausländerbehörde? If so, please share in the comments or drop me an email. Thank you so much!
  2. 🚃 Lost something on public transport? Here is the website to deal with it. It will be sold at an auction if you do not pick it up in 6 weeks. These are done quarterly, and see you at Auktionshaus Beier in July because I need some AirPods.
  3. 🚗 Germany is extremely dependent on the automotive industry and their exports. Don’t quote me on that, but the big ones make roughly 1/3 of their revenues in China. Now, look at these charts and think: What sets modern cars apart? What does it mean for Germany? Soon, the brand will be the only differentiator.
  4. 🙌 Pragmatic Engineer (Gergely Orosz) gave me a nice shoutout tweet. A must-follow if you are interested in tech/engineering. One of my recent favourites is this interview with Steve Yegge, which is full of interesting insights.
  5. 🤖 If you are like me, you maybe feel worried that your ChatGPT prompt game is weak (especially after reading all those "prompt influencers" milking the trend on the bird app). A while ago, I even linked to a “Prompt Engineer” as a future profession. But according to Ethan Mollick's Guide to Prompting, we do not have much to worry about. In a nutshell: just try things out and then repeat.
  6. 📦 eBay-Kleinanzeigen, one of the best German websites (😅) with 40M monthly users, will finally rename to Kleinanzeigen on 16.5 after being sold to Norwegian classifieds specialist Adevinta in 2021. Most of it will stay the same; I am delighted my “Top Zufriedenheit” status will also be migrated.
  7. 😔 Bad news: N26 is laying off 71 (4%), Knister Grill (Munich) insolvent; Flink shrank for 8k (down from 21k!) employees since April 2022.
  8. berlin choice of the week: activists vandalized a few luxury shops on K’damm, and of course, the commentariat delivered again on all sides of the spectrum. Also, BVG has a new type of tram that looks like a car. 😅
  9. ✈️ This week I learned that BER Terminals 1 and 2 are connected. You can use any security control to access gates at both terminals.
  10. 💬 Briefly: SellerX (Berlin) is rumoured to be in a sale process; HelloFresh and Delivery Hero are, unsurprisingly, growing slower: check their Investor Relations pages for details and take it with a pinch of salt; Bosch plans to purchase TSI Semiconductors' assets for $1.5 billion to enhance its semiconductor business with silicon carbide chips; Finn (Munich) CEO Max-Josef Meier resigned after harassing several female colleagues on a company event.

Week of 8th (May)

  1. 🚂 If you have decided to take on €49 ticket, Exberliner prepared a nice list of suggestions for excursions from Berlin. Worth a save!
  2. 🤑 Here is a summary of research on money and happiness. I like Nick’s conclusion: Increased income is associated with greater happiness for lower-income individuals. For high-income, unhappy individuals, further income is unlikely to increase happiness. For high-income, happy individuals, while more income could enhance happiness, the effort required may not be worth it.
  3. 😔 Bad news: CleverShuttle (Berlin) insolvent; Shopify 20% of employees (most of German org).
  4. berlin choice of the week is an interesting Reddit AMA from an U-Bahn driver from a year ago.
  5. 💬 Briefly:
  6. Getir wants to own them all and is reportedly buying Flink—enjoy it while it lasts;
  7. Tier reportedly selling itself;
  8. Vice News, a former alter news source loved by millennials and eventually copied by everyone, is in serious trouble;
  9. TeamViewer from Ba-Wü posted 13% YoY growth (151M);
  10. SAP wants to enter LLMs with an investment into Aleph Alpha—it will surely be expensive;
  11. Lilium (Munich) needs/wants to raise €250M;
  12. founder of once-hyped Gorillas, Kagan Sümer, is building something new in HealthTech called Mirror (no website yet);
  13. his other three colleagues founded meal-as-a-service for restaurants, Tasty Urban.

Week of 15th (May)

  1. ✌️ Here is another reminder to check out my article with 40+ questions you can ask at the job interview. Disclosure: not written by ChatGPT!
  2. 👻 Like all the startups beyond Series B, Bolt also plans to become profitable soon, specifically in the next 12 months, and then IPO in 2025. They might also do payments? More at Reuters. Meantime, Lyft, another Uber competitor, is firing 1100 employees.
  3. ⚡️ Remember all those predictions on the Russian gas and the collapse of Germany? Here is an interesting article about the concept of substitutes in economics (the fallacy: “When the average person thinks about a 40% reduction in natural gas supplies, they implicitly assume that each natural gas-dependent industry must cut its usage by 40%.”), but it is also worth reading the comments for differing opinions (= free markets are BS.)
  4. 👀 Besides your burgers and curries, Lieferando started to deliver 100 different MediaMarkt products inside the Berlin ring (useful if you urgently need a phone charger or a phone, lol? and bad for their competitor Arive). Food & high margin product delivery is probably here to stay, but groceries? I think not.
  5. 📚Blinkist, a Berlin-based app that always felt like cheating to me, was bought by Go1 from Down Under; nobody asked me for my opinion, but a good time to exit with all the Generative AI knocking on the door! Now I should probably go back to my book.
  6. 🌊 Have you ever heard of Seaflooding? Me neither, but it reads like a great idea. Flooding parts of the Sahara to reduce the ocean levels? Plus, make some energy on the way? Let’s do it!
  7. 👟 Adidas is stuck with €1B worth of Yeezy sneakers since the man lost his mind, but, amongst other batshit crazy stuff, found a purpose in antisemitism. They plan to sell them gradually and partially donate the proceeds. (€, 🇩🇪) What a problem to have.
  8. ⛴️ Exberliner delivers again! Berlin has plenty of ferries; I see myself using some in the summer. This article also made me think I need a “handpicked Berlin bucket list.”
  9. 😔 Bad news: nobody is publishing news about layoffs anymore! There are three options: 1) all layoffs are done; 2) all layoffs are silent; 3) nobody is laying off. I vote for 2). Infarm leaving Berlin & Europe; okäse (Köln) insolvent.
  10. berlin choice of the week is this DDR map of Berlin from 1988; comments deliver as usual.
  11. 💬 Briefly:
  12. swedish Northvolt plans to build a battery gigafactory in Schleswig-Holstein (and employ 3k people) with support from the state and Bund - careers;
  13. Revolut’s CFO is leaving, which is never a good sign, especially after problems with acquiring a banking licence in the UK. On a more positive note: they will start to sell ETFs via Berlin’s Upvest;
  14. Trivago, the troubled aggregator of the aggregators, changed almost their complete board;
  15. VW will restructure Cariad, its software arm, replacing its CEO with Peter Bosch (ex-Bentley);
  16. Google did not release Bard in the EU because of GDPregulation worries;
  17. Unstoppable Finance (Berlin-based crypto play) wants to get a banking license in 2024;
  18. Mobileye will do automated assistance and navigate-on-pilot functions for Porsche;
  19. FS Italiane ordered 40 locomotives from Siemens worth €300M;
  20. Rheinmetall is planning to start production in Ukraine.

Week of 22nd (May)

  1. 🚴‍♀️ If you have ever wondered how many bikes pass a certain checkpoint in Berlin, you have your answers here. (via this post on berlin)
  2. 👀 I found out about Himmel Unter Berlin, an exclusive invite-only exhibition. I did enter the waitlist, but if I could be your +1, please let me know. 🙏
  3. 💸 After eight years of rental price caps, landlords (incl. mine) just seem to love ignoring the rules and ask for too much rent! (🇩🇪) Analysis of 6K cases in 2021 shows that 98% were overcharged. Hah.
  4. Bitpanda, an Austrian crypto investing platform, jumped on the AI hype train and will invest $10M in an AI chatbot. Ok.
  5. In Saxony, AfD’s Sebastian Wippel brought the topic of chemtrails to the state parliament. What’s next, Flat Earth?
  6. Sifted reports that Bolt is close to buying Tier. There are still some micro-mobility companies left, but I am still unsure how such a seasonal business can be profitable long-term. Bolt is betting on many horses, and only time will tell if we will still see so many scooters lying around in 2 years. Related:
  7. ☝️I previously recommended Matt Levine and his Money Stuff, and this week he wrote about blitzscaling of Uber being possibly illegal. The VC-subsidised “winner takes all” mentality caused partial destruction of competition and could be considered predatory pricing. Worth a read (second chapter)!
  8. 😔 Bad news: nothing to report. So instead, data from last week’s poll: 26% (41) of voters know 10+ people laid off since April 1st, and 38% do not know anyone. The rest (36%) are in-between. Hard to draw conclusions, but clearly, silent layoffs are happening.
  9. berlin choice of the week is a flat directory of smaller real estate companies. Good luck if you are on a search now.
  10. 💬 Briefly: Tesla will start spending on marketing (inevitable with all the competition); ThyssenKrupp wants to IPO its hydrogen unit Nucera (careers) in June for 4B; Cara Care founder Jesaja Brinkmann ALSO behaved inappropriately towards female colleagues at a party in December and is OUT; Intel also wants to invest in LLM developers Aleph Alpha from Heidelberg; after Mercedes also VWis leaving Russia; DB ordered 73 new ICEs (🇩🇪) for €2B and wants to hire thousands—careers; ATU was hacked (🇩🇪)—I wonder if my car data is LOST or STOLEN.

Week of 29th (May)

  1. 📉 Germany is, because of a second negative quarter in a row, officially in a mild recession (GDP fell by 0.3% for the last quarter). Well. On the other hand, some startups (esp. renewables) were hiring extensively last year, as the analysis of Sifted shows. To me, Helsing from the Sifted list sounds promising, but ask them if they have a product already. Careers.
  2. 👎 Most of the Google/Amazon/other reviews are useless. First, a lot of them are fake and second; they can be bought, and third, they are skewed because the majority of people never review.Gergely Oroszdid an extensive analysis of Glassdoor reviews after layoffs and I think the whole thing proves the point that looking at them is useless and a waste of time.
  3. 💩 OpenAI founder Sam Altman said they might pull ChatGPT out of the EU because of the regulation shortly after he also told US regulators that AI should be regulated. I guess only his regulation is the correct regulation?
  4. 🛒 Instead of selling itself to Getir, Flink raised €150M from existing investors (they took a haircut to the highest valuation at €2.5B, now at around €1B). In addition, they are letting 100 employees in HQ go and are pulling out of France after their €100M Cajoo investment (🇩🇪, €). On top, Aldi Süd will experiment with delivery around Mülheim (🇩🇪) this July. Are you bullish or bearish?
  5. ☝️Big organisations are often arrogant and inefficient. It recently happened again to Microsoft, as reported in this anecdote where Satya Nadella scolded his R&D team. Another good lesson that the size and throwing money at things often doesn’t work.
  6. 😅 One of the weirdest political debates I have seen since in Berlin is around the closing of Friedrichstrasse for traffic. Now it will be open again from the 1st of July. But hey, what is the point of just closing a street without planting trees and making it much more pedestrian-friendly? They did it in many other cities, and it worked. Half-assed attempts make no sense.
  7. ✈️ Here is a longer profile in German of Ryanair and its success (🇩🇪) after their annual report. They are profitable, are expanding their fleet and want to hire 10k.
  8. 🧨 Before joining N26, you might want to read this great analysis from Miriam at Sifted. Bullish or bearish?
  9. 🐟 Here you have an Insta post of some of the best lakes around Berlin, which you should pair with this temperature monitoring when the time comes. From my perspective, the time is not here yet.
  10. I tried what3words a couple of times, and I remember thinking, “Wow, what a great idea”, before going back to using Google Maps. This week I learned they burned £119M to generate £2.5M in revenue in the last six years. What a time to be alive. This, kids, is what a vitamin looks like instead of a painkiller.
  11. ☄️Great news. There is probably no imminent danger of getting erased by an asteroid: We still have at least 1000 years left on Earth unless we destroy it ourselves first!
  12. 😔 Bad news: Circus (Hamburg, 35/25%); Meta 6000 (unknown for Germany); Moss(Berlin, 30), Flink (Berlin, 100).
  13. 💡 Speaking of layoffs: I have previously linked to “how to act” guidance, but it was not as good as this LinkedIn post from Mayuri Reddy. Read it and share it.
  14. 🇹🇭 I have never been to Thailand or Thai Park yet, and this is changing soon; Exberliner has tips on what to eat in Thai Park. I am going with Pad Thai. See you around!
  15. berlin choice of the week is this discussion about Pfandpiraten and how much they can earn. Fascinating! “They estimated that about 928,000 people actively collect Pfand in Germany. Of them, 56% make less than 4€ a day. Of them, 28% collect enough that it is their primary income.”
  16. 💬 Briefly: Solaris Bank is raising fresh money (€50M); Klarna moved its goal to reach profitability this summer to “this year” and is reportedly “on track”; Flix is expanding like there is no tomorrow: India will be its 42nd market; Neeva, a Google search ads-free alternative full of ex-Google execs, is no more; Meta was fined a record €1.2B for illegal data transfers from the EU to the US beating the previous record of €746M by Amazon.
-------- You can get these weekly. Thanks for reading and feedback.

2023.06.06 19:34 rndrumm Need next step Advice with how to navigate company Leadership in Healthcare regarding working hours per week for RN's and/or out of box thinking. It's like navigating a negligent/abusive relationship.

Hi Helpful REDDIT Humans,I wrote this letter, below the numbered points, for the Betterment of the Group, along with the input of my co-workers. I uploaded this letter to the Town Hall site for the February 10th, 2023 meeting for reduced hours or think out of the box for the retainment of staff. We are burnt out and no one is listening. I don't even think they even read the letter we submitted below. I modified some of this for protection. We are a Union workplace, I have not involved the Union.
  1. We followed up a month later in March to Mike, Jeff, Liz and our manager Kelly (who likes to please leadership) and asked if they have come to any decisions, and also said if we could set up an appointment with any of them and it was CRICKETS.
  2. Two weeks later we followed up again and invited any of them to our floor to talk to us. Again, met with CRICKETS. No one is replying to us.
  3. We sent a 3rd follow-up a week later and asked to meet or they come to our floor. This time I included the National President of our company.
  4. We finally got a response when we sent it the the National guy!!!! The state Leadership, Mike and Jeff and Director Liz were not happy about this and We finally got a response that said that we have been spoken to by management several times over the last few months regarding there will be no changes to the FTE. This is how they are going to retain nurses for the current shortage.
  5. I replied that he received misinformation and no one came and talked to us. I asked 10 of my co-workers if they recall anyone talking to us about reducing hours or working 4-10's and no one recalls anyone coming to our floor.
  6. Director Liz comes down to our floor the next day for our 0720 huddle unannounced huffing, puffing and pissed. She has her arms crossed and said she s here to talk but nothing is going to change. So we asked if we can try out 4-10 hours shifts. She said yes, but no reduction in FTE or the use of PRN's (as needed nurses).
  7. I asked my manager Kelly for a blank schedule with how many nurses a day we need for the week, we took all the vacation requests for June and made it work using 21 nurses and no PRN staff!! We needed only 4 PRN nurses for the end of June to grant everyone the time off they asked for!!!!!
  8. I submitted it to Director Liz and AGAIN had to follow-up a week later of what they thought. I asked my manager how the meeting went and she said they are running the numbers and I told her to please send this information out because the staff, at this point is demoralized. She did and it has been 2 weeks.
  9. THIS IS WHERE WE NEED HELP. They just want us to go AWAY. This is very dysfunctional and neglectful. What is our next step? It has been 4 months of this.

THIS IS THE INITIAL LETTER WE SENT IN FEBRUARY:
To: Mike - Regional President Jeff, MD - President, Executive Medical Director From: Gastroenterology Staff - RN’s and MA’s Re: Flexible Schedules to Reduce Burnout and Increase Quality of Life Hello Mike and Jeff Thank You for holding this Town Hall meeting for the Region employees. We would like to take this opportunity to share with you our thoughts, ideas, feelings, and concerns regarding our life here in GI. Please know, GI is a wonderful place to work, our team is dynamic and patient care is fulfilling. As healthcare professionals, we are always looking for ways to improve patient safety and member satisfaction, improve our efficiency and make Kaiser Permanente Thrive. Our concern and frustration are that the required full-time employment (FTE) is unThriving many of us into the ground. It is demoralizing and makes it challenging to create a work-life balance. We have tried going the normal route of speaking to our managers. We have been told by Kelly our manager, that GI leadership says to talk to the Union, and we have spoken to the Union ad nauseam about this. A petition was circulated in the three GI departments to garner support for addressing FTE, which is below and shared with Nate our Union representative. Nothing has come of it. Union Reps have spoken to Steve, who is Kelly's Boss and it ends there, we have no idea if he presents it to Liz, who is the Ambulatory Surgery Center Admin. We are trying a new route, going from the top down. Our People Pulses reflect our dissatisfaction on several levels, but we never get to go over them as a Department to see if we can make improvements and talk about issues. We feel as though we are not Seen or Heard. Company has approximately spent $160,000 training Eight nurses that have left for three 12 houfour 10 hour shifts or went PRN THIS YEAR. Because Five/8 hour days are not sustainable. It takes approximately 2 months to train a nurse to get them up and running and a year or two to feel seasoned in GI. It is very stressful for the department to keep training people only to have them leave because the FTE is a 1.0 and then they realize the required hours are not sustainable. At the end of our workday, and work week we have very little time or energy to take care of family, home responsibilities and ourselves. As RN’s and MA’s our jobs in GI are very dynamic, physically, mentally and emotionally demanding. Physically we are constantly moving beds in and out of rooms, adjusting beds and patients for each case, getting patients ready for their procedures, making beds, and restocking supplies. During procedures some patients require a great deal more hands-on, applying pressure on the abdomen to help the doctor advance the scope through the colon, upper endoscopies may require us to hold hands, and or bracing the patient to help the DR. perform the procedure. Mentally we always have to be on. We are always assessing patients. Pre-oping patients many skills and assessments. During intra-op we are constantly assessing patients for safety and ensuring patient comfort, documenting the many patient assessments, and medication administered all while taking biopsies, cauterizing polyps, inking sites in the colon, dilating the esophagus, getting through tortuous colons, etc.
Also, many of the patients are anxious/angry or are being diagnosed with cancer and other GI diseases, all of which require extra care and can be emotionally draining. Our many work demands are unique to this department. Demands, that make us both love our job and also a need to create a balance of self-care to help us fulfill the Kaiser Permanente Mission. Quite simply, many of us are burnt out: There is increased absenteeism - which costs Company $ Increased employee turnover - which cost Company $ Increased employee workplace stress between employees - which costs Company $ Decreased employee trust, loyalty, motivation and morale - which costs Company$ Decreased employee productivity - which costs Company $ Harm to Company's Reputation and decreased respect for the organization’s mission and vision - which costs $ Please consider that St. Joe’s has openings for part-time work with benefits. GI in Oregon has 4/10 hour shifts, so does GI in California, California barely has a lot of 1.0’s, So it can be done, and it has been done at Kaiser in the past. Please consider changing the required FTE to 0.8 for Full Time/and the flexibility for 4-day/ 9-hour shifts, and 4-day /10-hour shifts for the RNs, and MAs. This would be beneficial and the staff would have the flexibility to schedule healthcare appointments for themselves and their families, get their car fixed, take their pets to the vet, increase their quality of life, and decrease stress. As we prioritize patient care, we also want all of our coworkers to have the ability to take care of themselves and their families. We have attached a screenshot of the seniority lists at all three GI locations. I think it's important to mention the inequality of FTE distribution across the three locations- Franklin has a much higher number of over all 1.0's, 13 total. All the 1.0 staff are getting resentful of fellow co-workers' lower FTE. Franklin alone has lost 5 - 1.0 just that have left Franklin GI this year. People who left (or are leaving) that were 0.6-0.8 FTE who then had their positions posted as a 1.0: Robin 0.7 last day 3/3 Heidi 0.6 People who left due to being unhappy with a 1.0 FTE in GI: Matthew - moved out of state Sara - went to KASC Lone Tree - 3/12’s Sara - went to KASC Franklin - 3/12’s Jane - went to Minors Lone Tree - 4/10’s Anna - went to Minors Rock Creek 4/10’s Jason - left for reduced hours outside of Kaiser Heidi - just gave her notice and is going to Ortho PRN Chanda-left procedures to do fibroscans With a 10-hour day shift this would allow us to; call patients, scrub schedules, and have a list of patients that can come in the next day when we see an opening. For example, a doctor had 3 cases fall off that cost Kaiser $3,000 - $1,000 per 30 minutes. We have about a 11 percent no show rate at Franklin, we could improve that by calling patients and filling in the gaps if the patient cancels with another patient. Scrubbing the schedules and increasing profits for Kaiser..there are so many ways we can be more dynamic and profitable. We can start a little earlier to set up our rooms, right now we have 15 minutes. Since Kaiser is coming down on the Doctors to do more and more and more, they are coming into our rooms earlier and earlier because Kaiser is making them do more in the same amount of time. It’s RUSH, RUSH and RUSHing all around. Please let us know how we can help support our case for a .8 FTE and/or 4 ten hour shifts. Thank you for your time and attention to this matter as it is very important to many, if not all of the RNs in the Colorado GI departments. If this doesn’t make it to the Town Hall, would you please respond to us regarding your thoughts about our letter, People Pulse, and maybe a visit to our Unit? It would mean a lot to hear a rationale instead of deaf ears and the word NO all the time, Or we can’t change it, because your schedule revolves around the Doctor’s schedule. Why is it so hard to TRIAL and/or TRY DIFFERENT schedules out to see if it makes an improvement? Thank you for your time and for listening to us, GI Colorado The letter below was from GI, circulated July 2022 Dear Company, We, the Employed Registered Nurses (RNs), Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) and Local 7 Healthcare Professionals, are respectfully requesting that full time employment (FTE) hours be reconsidered.
As committed employees of Company, we share the mission to deliver quality health care to every member. Our training to assess and care for our patients demands we be at our best with every patient contact, prioritizing patient safety and wellbeing. Currently new Registered Nurses are being hired at a 1.0 FTE, whereas RNs in the past have been hired at .9 and there are long term RN’s that are employed at a .8, .7 and .6 FTE. A five day, forty-hour work week does not allow for a balance between work and life, and limits flexible scheduling options for many RN and APP positions.
Kaiser invests a considerable amount of time to train newly hired RNs, and APPs. These new hires are initially excited to be a part of a respected and prestigious organization. They soon learn that the demands and inflexible scheduling are not conducive to creating a balance between career and family responsibilities or interests outside of work. We are hearing from our colleagues that they will not apply for a position that requires a forty-hour work week. We are losing good people to other organizations so that they can maintain a work life balance. As RNs, APPs, Local 7 Healthcare Professionals who value our careers as health care providers for Kaiser Permanente Members, we respectfully request that full time employment be flexible and part time positions be offered to allow for a work life balance. We are available to have an in person meeting to discuss this in further detail. Thank you for your serious consideration, GI https://www.thepermanentejournal.org/doi/10.7812/TPP/05-092 Some takeaways from the article: “If we’re not taking care of ourselves, then how can we take care of our members future and to our reputation,” from the late Bernard Tyson. He goes on to say, “They are critical to our future because we depend upon people to deliver our health care. Sure, technology and well-calibrated equipment are also key tools in health care delivery, but it’s the people who bring the experience to life for our members and key stakeholders. Plus, in order for us to be respected in our field and viewed as America’s health leader, we must walk our talk.” Supporting a work environment that promotes employee health, wellness, and work-life balance is directly aligned with KP and Labor Management intentions and goals. KP leaders will continue to demonstrate our commitment to the wellness of our workforce by caring and respecting the physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being of employees and physicians.” Work-Life Balance: Care Instructions - https://healthy.kaiserpermanente.org › health-wellness As America’s health leader, we must walk our talk. https://www.theskimm.com/money After dealing with labor shortages and employee burnout, companies are taking things up a notch with work perks in 2023. And we’re not just talking about lunch stipends or ping-pong tables in the office. It’s called proactive rest. And it’s more than just taking your vacation days. Because waiting until you’re burned out to take care of yourself is so 2022. What is proactive rest? Proactive rest is how some companies are stepping up to prevent employee burnout at work, according to a Gartner workplace trends report. Instead of only relying on PTO, workplaces are adjusting their policies to give their employees breaks and flexibility. It's similar to active recoveries in fitness — rather than taking a full day of rest from working out, you might opt for a walk or some stretching instead. At work, proactive rest might look like: No-meeting blocks. When your company designates certain hours or days for no meetings. Flexible lunch breaks. Meaning, employees can choose when they take their breaks. Mandatory breaks. And that could be in addition to lunch. It may look like “wellness time” for you to take naps in the afternoon. Four-day work weeks. As in, getting the same amount of work done in fewer days — with no pay cuts. Office closures. That could mean a week-long company-wide break or summer Fridays. So you can switch from “TGIF” to “TGIT” from June through September. View post on Instagram Why is proactive rest important? Prioritizing rest can help companies boost productivity. It may sound counterintuitive, but a Gartner survey found a 26% increase in performance at companies that incorporated proactive rest. Plus, it could incentivize people to apply for jobs at these companies — and even slow turnover rates. Because burned out employees are more than three times likely to look for new jobs. For employees, burnout is still extremely common. And being able to get ahead of it can help avoid having to recover from burnout later on. Building rest into the work calendar can help encourage employees to actually use it. Because Americans aren’t the best at taking their PTO, even when it’s offered. And they typically put in extra hours: The average employee worked nine unpaid hours per week in 2022. If it sounds like hustle culture, it is. While it may be helpful for climbing the corporate ladder, it might come at the expense of your mental health. View post on TikTok theSkimm Companies are taking extra measures to keep employees’ mental health in check in 2023. Because free office snacks just aren’t cutting it anymore. And having the freedom to take care of yourself now can prevent you from struggling down the road.

2023.06.06 19:21 samfoto_ I am 27 years old, make $63k/yearly, live in the suburbs of Minneapolis, MN, and work in marketing.

Assets & Debt
Retirement balance: $13,286.43 (I make a small monthly deposit into my IRA. I do not have a 401k at the moment as I'm focusing on saving)
Mortgage loan remaining: ~$162k
Savings balance: ~$20k
Checking balance: ~$5k
Credit card debt: $0 (I pay off monthly)
Student loan debt: $17,539.32 (BFA Photography)

Income
Income Progression: After graduating, I started in Customer Service making $36k. Some coworkers at my next job recommended I get a certification in Salesforce Marketing Cloud as something to do during COVID’s early month. The company paid. It helped me get into the marketing field. My first marketing job was $50k/yr. On my second with about a year and a half of experience. I want to change fields but do not have the experience necessary to do so. If I stay at my company I may have the opportunity to try the field I want within a year or two. My work-life balance is amazing so I’m sticking with it.

No side gigs or other income.

Total: ~$556

This is NOT a typical week! Lots of medium things that added up happening at the end/beginning of a new month. That's life! When I buy things I use regularly, I often buy 2-3 more than I need at a time so that I don't have to get them as often. Unless J and I are together, I don't go out to eat to save money. I'm very lucky to work from home and save a lot of expenses that way. My job is pretty low-key and quiet most of the day, so I didn't detail too much about it this week.

Edit: I forgot to mention above that J and I are not buying a house together, I'm helping him look. We really go to open houses for fun right now as he isn't thinking about buying until late this yeaearly next year. Interest rates are insane right now! I have a super low rate and am not looking forward to losing out on it some day.

2023.06.06 12:06 Necessary-Feedback76 VIC: Engine builder wants more money for sight-unseen engine. Delayed with no end date.

Apologies for text slab.
I've got a modest older car that i wanted to swap out the engine in. it's a like for like swap.
An online contact recommended a nearby shop he'd used for the same. This shop specializes in inboard speedboats, for which this motor is used a lot. It was reasonable to expect they were capable.
Last year in November I went to their workshop, and discussed my needs, and got a letter-headed write-up of the motor they'd supply, and a cost.
This write-up didn't include a delivery date, but i and was verbally told February, I put $2k down on a total $6000 bill.
These values, my name and address were written on the above document. I don't recall signing anything.
Flash forward to now, and a lot of excuses; COVID, parts delays etc. At some point I got an SMS that it'd be ready 4 weeks after Easter, which didn't happen
The last slipped date was a few Mondays back; he started telling me he wasn't hearing back from some part he'd sent to a workshop. I started pushing to come in and inspect what's done, and he got really shitty, says he's often at his other businesses, and also that if I was to come in he has to clean up and tools down etc. felt really evasive. I haven't seen anything to confirm the engine exists.
He also backed down on fitting it, which was originally verbally agreed, but not documented.
As of the last week, he's reaching out, apparently he's got the above missing part in, and also has a trade account with some new part provider, so can change the original offering (for $500 more) i was interested, and said so over the phone.
Then on Monday he reached out and kept talking up the build, but then said but he's holding a lot of projects and cash light, so can i pay him an extra $2k now, instead of on handover. He also says he has a contact who can do the install for $1k extra at completion, and do it in the last week of June.
I told him cool, put all this in writing as well as a completion ETA, and I can transfer you money. he sent across an SMS photo of a new Document with the parts changes, the proposed payment breakdown of the nos $6.5k, and the installation as an additional bottom line item
"ENGINE REMOVE AND REPLACE, OUTSIDE QUOTE OF $1000 CASH ADDITIONAL PLUS... ANY NECESSARY UNSERVICABLE ITEMS FOUND IN REMOVE AND REPLACE"
basically everything except for the completion date, I flagged this and he re-sent including
"REVISED ETA WOULD NOW BE CAR INTO OUR PREMISES SAY 21/06/2023 ISH" (Sic)
I replied that I'd call him tomorrow to discuss, and he's tried to call me twice. At the risk of throwing good money after bad, if I was to proceed at all, it would be to pick the engine up and arrange a workshop to install (have a quote already) and only if there was a written completion date I could hold to.
As it stands a date for entering his workshop feels very risky, and the phrasing makes me fear he could then basically hold it hostage/never be working on it/find a thousand things that "must must must" be fixed.
What are my options to: a) walk away from the whole thing (doubt i could get any money back, he also holds about $500 in parts i own and dropped off, Could he sue for a contract breach? b) one reason he's pressing to do the install on site, is so he can take the car out for an engine run in etc, which i suspect he may hold as a warranty condition, can he do this?

2023.06.06 10:43 vesnin_sergey Tarweek — a guest house in Tara for group training and sports training camps

Tarweek — a guest house in Tara for group training and sports training camps

Weekend in the Tara Mountains - Tarweek Guesthouse

Milan Miletich invited us to relax in his home on Mount Tara in Serbia. There was no need to beg us to go to the mountains. Two weeks later, we found ourselves there, and now I am writing a detailed review of the trip and the place.
Before the trip, we saw a lot of photos of the location and scrolled through the Instagram of the house (yes, the house is not simple and has a profile on Instagram!) The place is called Tarweek.

Can you get to Tarweek?

There is a bus to Bajina Bašta (Bajina Bašta) from the central bus station in Belgrade. If at the bus station ticket office, you were sent to the bus driver to get a ticket, don't forget to buy a ticket at the ticket office to get to the buses. This fee is for the use of the bus station infrastructure. If the key is sold at the ticket office, you can pass the turnstile with it.
The ride to Baina Bashta takes 4:30 hours. Halfway there is a cozy roadside cafe with a store and restrooms. The drivers will sit for a soup plate; you have 20 minutes for a snack. The hot meals are simple and wonderful.
In Baina Bashta, Milan Miletic will call you a cab home. Tarweek is actually at 1000 meters and along the winding 20+ kilometers. It is unlikely to get there.
There is a serpentine with beautiful views. Halfway up, you'll have a dam and a few kilometers of fantastic views of Lake Perućac (Jezero Peruquac). If the cab driver likes you, he will stop at the observation point and give you a moment for a photo.

These views are already enough to make the 5-hour drive here. But actually, the most exciting thing is ahead!
A cab will take you to Predov Krst, and you will find yourself in front of Tarweek - Planinarski dom na Tari.

What is Tarweek, and why are you most likely to be here?

Tarweek is a big house set up for group classes. It's big enough for 20 people. But if you need to, they'll put more people in. I once had 28 people living there.

https://preview.redd.it/taxgbdqgyc4b1.png?width=1000&format=png&auto=webp&s=a1282fa56186d4e8b81c358acc0f994e0205e4fe

The first floor is the dining room and porch with a fireplace. This is where they study when it's cool and raining.
But the most exciting thing is the outdoor activities.
I'll tell you about nature separately because that's the main thing to come here for!
What kind of activities are there in Tarweek? Any kind.
  • Athletic trainers hold training camps here.
  • Coaches teach classes.
  • Language teachers conduct language courses.
  • IT people are taking a break from civilization.
  • Companies hold team building and corporate events.
  • And shamans pump up their shamanic levels.
In Tarweek you can do any group training. In general, any! The essence is that the group gathers away from the city, away from civilization, in the woods, and works hard on what is needed.
At Tarweek, you can relax with a large group of people. Or you can not rest but plunge on a run or walk the slopes of hiking trails. It's where hiking fans go. Because Tarweek is the heart of Tara National Park. Many viewpoints have heady views of mountains, canyons, and forests. And you'll have to get to these viewpoints on your own: several (tens) of miles and hundreds of feet up.

Kids? Pets?

It's heaven for kids in Tarweek—a whole day in nature. Master Milan's son won't let you get bored and won't let you get lost. An authentic Indian vacation at Grandma in the Village is only ten times more enjoyable! Extremely healthy!
With pets can!

What are the living conditions at Tarweek?

Before you move in, they will discuss meals with you. There is a professional kitchen with cooks. They will buy groceries for you and feed you as you order. Vegan, gluten-free, and other self-limiting topics are worked out. But the food is so good, you'll ask for the illegal stuff yourself! It happens regularly; I didn't come up with anything.
The living conditions are thoughtfully Spartan. No one will make you wash in the creek; your room has a shower, toilet, and hot water. A bed and clean linens are provided. But to live by two or three. The laundry is centralized in a washing machine. Have breakfast, lunch, and dinner on schedule: and go to the nearest store 25 kilometers and 700 meters down the serpentine.
You will have a communal table and classes in front of the fireplace or the pavilion by the hearth.
You will have the most delicious air. You will have glorious food. You'll have nothing to distract you from your goals. Nothing will distract you from why you are here.

The Nature of Tara

The nature you find yourself in is the essence of this place. The nature of Tara is what you are here for. Tara is covered with forest: pine trees mixed with deciduous trees. The temperature here is very comfortable in the summer compared to the heat in the city. We caught a rainy day, and it was beautiful! We saw a sunny day, and it was terrific!

Forests and valleys with meadows surround Tarweek. There are hiking and trekking trails in all directions from the house. There are so many that you'd have to live here for two months to explore them all and walk twenty trails every day. Walking the entire Tara is a challenge!
We've been running. We walked after our runs. We saw some lovely places! Where the experience makes you reflect when you haven't seen that before.
We were told that we had been to pop places. And the leading beauty is farther and higher.
Describing it all in words is useless. I'll show you what I took with my iPhone over the weekend. What's sad, the camera doesn't capture the volume, the smells, the scale, and the spirit of the place.

What did we do on Tara?

Since we came to visit as friends and not for training, our leisure time was our concern. We ran the trails. I wanted to try trail running; I tried it. Gravel roads with varying difficulty climb and descents, continuous oxygen cocktail, and thin air 1000 meters above sea level. After the training, you eat, sleep, and do nothing—a concentrated, uncluttered rest.
The kids had two happy days.
We cleared our minds and crammed a week's worth of life into two days. Suddenly you realize that sitting at sunset with a cup of tea and watching a cloud puff up on top of a mountain is what happiness is all about. It turns out that you don't need much to be happy.
You can walk, talk about everything in the world and fit into one day three times more time and events than in everyday life. All the problems and worries remain about 1000 meters below, and here you have everything to be happy.

How do you organize something in Tarweek?

If you're a coach, trainer, or business owner, and you've got a group session in mind, and the only question is location, consider isolating your mentees so they can get a better handle on your knowledge. I can't think of a better place to do this than Tarweek.
Everything I've been told about past training camps is a consistent win-win success. Tarweek has proven itself, supports, and develops, and the guests get a concentration of knowledge and skills that are hard to pack into a more convenient form.

2023.06.06 04:01 Johndoop First PC Build (in a long time)

First PC Build (in a long time)
Hello! It has been over 10 years since I built a PC, and now that I can afford the specs I want, I’m a bit concerned I’ve lost track of optimization. I’ve compiled this component list focused on an RTX 4080, and I was hoping to hear any feedback about the parts I’ve selected and if there might be any synergy issues with them put together. I’m no engineer, and I worry I’ve overlooked something (I already have peripherals like mouse/keyboard/monitor, FYI).
• MSI Gaming GeForce RTX 4080 16GB GDDR6X PCI Express 4.0 Video Card
• Intel Core i5-13600K - Core i5 13th Gen Raptor Lake 14-Core (6P+8E) 3.5 GHz LGA 1700 125W Intel UHD Graphics 770 Desktop Processor
• ASUS TUF Gaming Z790-Plus WiFi D4 LGA 1700 (Intel 12th&13th Gen) ATX Gaming Motherboard
• CORSAIR Vengeance RGB 32GB (2 x 16GB) 288-Pin PC RAM DDR5 6000 (PC5 48000)
• WD_BLACK SN850X NVMe M.2 2280 2TB PCI-Express 4.0 x4 Internal Solid State Drive
• DeepCool Liquid Cooler LS720 360mm 4th Gen Dual-Chamber Pump 3100RPM 300w
• CORSAIR RMx Shift Series RM1000x Shift Fully Modular 80PLUS Gold ATX Power Supply
• CORSAIR 5000D Airflow Tempered Glass Mid-Tower ATX PC Case
Looking to run Windows 11.
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!
