MiSTer is an open source project that aims to recreate various classic computers, game consoles and arcade machines. It is a port of the MiST project to a larger field-programmable gate array (FPGA) and faster ARM processor. MiSTer utilizes a readily available FPGA development board called the 'DE10-Nano', which connects to your display via HDMI. It can additionally be expanded with various (mostly optional) add-ons such as a USB hub, SDRAM, audio and VGA out for most gaming requirements

2023.03.29 22:07 bakerbarberbarbie Preparing to become a SAHM

Tl;dr: If given the opportunity, how would you prepare to become a SAHM in a few months time?
Little back story, I have worked in customer service since I turned 15. The longest I've gone without working have been the two times I've been on maternity leave, and a brief period during the pandemic where my profession (hairstylist) closed. My partner and I have similar goals for our future, and that included buying a small farm with the intention of slowly turning it into a hobby farm/ market farm. Well not to count our chickens before they hatch, but there is a real potential for my partner to get a major promotion, that could realistically make me going to work unnecessary. I'm currently paying nearly my entire income to daycare, and a few small bills. We have very little in debit (a farm, one vehicle, student loans..) and almost no credit card debit.
My biggest concern is... I've never relied on someone else to pay for all of the bills. I watched my mother go through a horrendous divorce that nearly left us homeless bc my bio dad controlled all of the finances (even tho my mother did work) so I was cautioned to always have "your own money".
SAHM, do you pocket money aside for a "oh fuck" emergency? Are you given an amount to do "you stuff" that has nothing to do with bills? Where do you start this conversation?
Thanks for all the insight, Sincerely, scared future farmer?

2023.03.29 22:06 Dismal-Jellyfish SEC Alert! Chair Gary Gensler: "I am pleased to support the President’s FY 2024 request of $2.436 billion for the SEC, to put us on a better track for the future" "FY 2023 funding for the first time brought the agency’s staffing back above where we were seven years ago."

SEC Alert! Chair Gary Gensler:
Source: https://www.sec.gov/news/testimony/gensler-testimony-subcommittee-financial-services-and-general-government-032923

Highlights:

Full-time equivalents (FTEs) at the SEC and in individual Divisions. Overall SEC FTEs include all Offices and Divisions.
  • The SEC’s funding is deficit-neutral; appropriations are offset by transaction fees.
  • FY 2024 request of $2.436 billion for the SEC.
  • FY 2023 funding for the first time brought the agency’s staffing back above where it was seven years ago.
  • The SEC now is approximately three percent larger than it was in FY 2016
  • In FY 2023, the number of positions funded by Congress was 5,303, a much-needed increase of 400.
  • The FY 2024 request seeks funding for an additional 170 positions, as well as full-year funding for those staff hired in FY 2023.
  • Considering full-time equivalents (FTEs)—or actual time worked—the FY 2024 request would support 5,139 FTEs.
  • The SEC has 30 Divisions and Offices across our 11 regional locations and Washington, D.C., headquarters.

Enforcement and Examinations:

The Divisions of Enforcement and Examinations account for about half of the SEC’s staff. Without examination of compliance with and enforcement of our rules and laws, we can’t instill the trust necessary for our markets to thrive. Stamping out fraud, manipulation, and abuse lowers risk in the system. It protects investors and reduces the cost of capital.
Division of Enforcement
  • The SEC received more than 35,000 separate tips, complaints, and referrals from whistleblowers and others in FY 2022 (more than double FY 2016).
  • During the same period, the Division shrank five percent.
  • The Division brought more than 750 enforcement actions in FY 2022, a nine percent increase over the prior year.
  • Resulted in orders for $6.4 billion in penalties and disgorgement.
  • This year’s request would grow the team and get the Division to just four percent more than it was in FY 2016.
Division of Examinations
  • Conducted more than 3,000 examinations across our tens of thousands of registrants, from investment advisers to broker-dealers to exchanges.
  • Registered investment advisers grew by 22 percent—to about 15,000, up from approximately 12,500 in 2017.
  • During the same period, the number of private funds increased by 50 percent to approximately 50,000.
  • FY 2024 request would help the Division grow to 1,144 FTEs, allowing it to keep pace with the market challenges of the last decade.

Programmatic Divisions:

Corporation Finance
  • During the last three years, the number of reporting companies the Division oversees has increased by 18 percent to 7,836, primarily due to initial public offerings.
  • Merger activity has more than tripled 2020 levels in the last two fiscal years
  • Division’s staff is still approximately 17 percent below FY 2016.
  • Today’s budget request would grow the team to 454 FTEs.
  • With this increase, the Division still would be five percent smaller than it was in FY 2016.
Investment Management
  • Oversees more than 30,000 registered entities, including approximately 16,000 registered funds and 15,000 investment advisers.
  • The assets managed just by private funds, now at approximately $25 trillion in gross assets, have surpassed the size of the entire U.S. commercial banking industry of approximately $23 trillion.
  • The combined assets managed by registered investment companies, private funds, and separately managed accounts the Division oversees has surpassed $100 trillion.
  • Asked for funding to support 238 FTEs.
Trading and Markets
  • Division oversees more than 3,500 broker-dealers, 24 national securities exchanges, 99 alternative trading systems, 50 securities-based swap dealers, and seven active registered clearing agencies, among other entities.
  • Division is responding to an increasing number of public inquiries, up by more than 67 percent since FY 2019 to approximately 20,000 inquiries in FY 2022.
  • Requested 309 FTEs.

Economic Risk and Analysis

  • The Division of Economic and Risk Analysis supports the Commission in every role, whether it’s enforcement or examinations, monitoring the markets, or rulemaking.
  • In the Enforcement context, the Division’s staff is instrumental in identifying potential wrongdoing, assessing ill-gotten gains, and working to return funds to harmed investors
  • Analyses are included in proposing releases that are put out for public comment, and staff throughout the agency actively engages with the public to receive input, including on the economic analyses.
  • Requested 198 FTEs.

Additional Matters

Technology
  • Requested $393 million to support the Commission’s data analysis, cybersecurity, and other IT needs.
  • This request assumes full use of an additional $50 million from the SEC Reserve Fund for multi-year IT projects and programs.
  • To put these figures in context, this spending is dwarfed by what some of the biggest market participants spend in a month on technology.
Real Estate
  • The SEC has offices in Washington, D.C., and 11 other places.
  • The total cost in FY 2023 was five percent of budget.
  • Preparing to vacate one of three headquarters buildings in Washington, D.C., by the end of this fiscal year, resulting in a reduction of 210,000 square feet of space and approximately $14 million per year in savings.

TLDRS:

"There has been dynamic change in communications to and among investors, from Reddit forums"
The President’s FY 2024 request of $2.436 billion for the SEC is supported by Gary Gensler, with the SEC just now seeing headcount at numbers not seen since 2016.

Full remarks:

Good afternoon, Chair Womack, Ranking Member Hoyer, and members of the Subcommittee. Thank you for inviting me to testify today on the Securities and Exchange Commission’s Fiscal Year (FY) 2024 budget request. As is customary, I’d like to note that my views are my own, and I am not speaking on behalf of my fellow Commissioners or the SEC staff.
Protecting the Public for 90 Years
The SEC is critical to the American public. For 90 years, the federal securities laws—and our work to oversee them—have played a crucial role in good times and in times of stress. These laws, the first of which was enacted in 1933, benefit investors, issuers ranging from startups to multinational corporations, and the markets in the middle. The core principles of U.S. securities markets regulation have contributed to America’s economic success and geopolitical standing around the globe.
This agency’s clients are the 330 million Americans, your constituents who invest in their 401(k)s and IRAs, trade through brokerage apps, take out mortgage or auto loans, or use robo-advisers. They’re also Americans accessing the capital markets to fund their businesses from small to large, their new ideas and innovations. We oversee broker-dealers, stock exchanges, clearinghouses, mutual funds, asset managers, and public company issuers, among other participants in our financial markets.
It’s for the investing public and issuers that our staff must continue to drive efficiencies, help protect for financial stability, and modernize our rulesets for today’s $100 trillion capital markets as well as today’s technologies, in a manner consistent with our Congressional authorities.
Growth and Change in the Markets
We’ve seen tremendous growth and change in our markets. More people than ever are participating—trading and using tools and technologies that were unavailable even a few years ago.
For example, from 2017 to 2022, the number of clients of registered investment advisers grew 60 percent from 34 million to 53 million. During that same period, average daily trading in the equity markets more than doubled from more than 30 million transactions to more than 77 million.
Technology is rapidly transforming our markets and business models. These changes range from electronic trading and the cloud to artificial intelligence and predictive data analytics, just to name a few. There has been dynamic change in communications to and among investors, from Reddit forums to celebrity influencers. Further, we’ve seen the Wild West of the crypto markets, rife with noncompliance, where investors have put hard-earned assets at risk in a highly speculative asset class.
Such growth and rapid change also means more possibility for wrongdoing. As the cop on the beat, we must be able to meet the match of bad actors. Thus, it makes sense for the SEC to grow along with the expansion and increased complexity in the capital markets.
I am proud of this agency. I am proud of our dedicated staff. It has done remarkable work with limited resources. With funding to meet the scale of our mission, we can be an even stronger advocate for the American public—investors and issuers alike.
Further, while recent market volatility raises many important issues for policymakers and the American public, it is also a reminder of the SEC’s need to be adequately resourced.
Budget Request
I am pleased to support the President’s FY 2024 request of $2.436 billion for the SEC, to put us on a better track for the future.
To put this in context, with this committee’s help, FY 2023 funding for the first time brought the agency’s staffing back above where we were seven years ago. The SEC now is approximately three percent larger than it was in FY 2016. Meanwhile, the demands on our talented staff have grown dramatically.
The agency’s oversight function is vast. In addition to the approximately 40,000 entities I mentioned above, we oversee credit rating agencies, the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board, the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, the Municipal Securities Rulemaking Board, the Securities Investor Protection Corporation, and the Financial Accounting Standards Board.
In FY 2023, the number of positions funded by Congress was 5,303, a much-needed increase of 400. We’re now in the process of filling those positions. The FY 2024 request seeks funding for an additional 170 positions, as well as full-year funding for those staff hired in FY 2023. Considering full-time equivalents (FTEs)—or actual time worked—the FY 2024 request would support 5,139 FTEs.
As this committee considers its work, it’s worth noting the SEC’s funding is deficit-neutral; appropriations are offset by transaction fees.
The SEC has 30 Divisions and Offices across our 11 regional locations and Washington, D.C., headquarters. I’m summarizing below the budget requests for our six Divisions and will briefly touch on technology and real estate. For further details as well as a review of the other offices of the SEC, please reference the FY 2024 Congressional Budget Justification.
Enforcement and Examinations
The Divisions of Enforcement and Examinations account for about half of the SEC’s staff. Without examination of compliance with and enforcement of our rules and laws, we can’t instill the trust necessary for our markets to thrive. Stamping out fraud, manipulation, and abuse lowers risk in the system. It protects investors and reduces the cost of capital. The whole economy benefits from that.
Division of Enforcement
The SEC received more than 35,000 separate tips, complaints, and referrals from whistleblowers and others in FY 2022. To give context, this is more than double the number we received in FY 2016.
During the same period, the Division shrank five percent.
Even with limited resources, the Division brought more than 750 enforcement actions in FY 2022, a nine percent increase over the prior year. Our actions resulted in orders for $6.4 billion in penalties and disgorgement.
Meanwhile, rapid technological innovation in the financial markets has led to misconduct in emerging and new areas, not least in the crypto space. Addressing this requires new tools, expertise, and resources.
The additional staff will provide the Division with more capacity to meet these challenges, investigate misconduct on a larger scale, and accelerate the pace of enforcement investigations to resolution.
This year’s request would grow the team and get the Division to just four percent more than it was in FY 2016.
Division of Examinations
The Division of Examinations serves on the front lines to help ensure firms comply with the law.
In FY 2022, we conducted more than 3,000 examinations across our tens of thousands of registrants, from investment advisers to broker-dealers to exchanges, to ensure they are following their legal obligations to customers, including seniors and other vulnerable investors.
Importantly, the Division is the first line of defense for the investing public relying on investment advisers. Meanwhile, their numbers have grown significantly in the last five years. Registered investment advisers grew by 22 percent—to about 15,000, up from approximately 12,500 in 2017. During the same period, the number of private funds increased by 50 percent to approximately 50,000. This stretches thin the limited resources of the Division.
Further, we work in parallel with self-regulatory organizations to examine registered broker-dealers; in each of the last five years, we jointly examined nearly half of them—even as the number of daily transactions in the equity markets more than doubled.
Our FY 2024 request would help the Division grow to 1,144 FTEs, allowing it to keep pace with the market challenges of the last decade. The majority of this increase relates to full-year funding for those staff positions authorized and hired in FY 2023.
These additional resources would strengthen the Division’s ability to protect American families by addressing risks in the crypto markets, cyber and information security, and the resiliency of critical market infrastructure.
Programmatic Divisions
Next, I will turn to our three programmatic Divisions.
Corporation Finance
The Division of Corporation Finance oversees the disclosures of public companies so that investors can make informed investment decisions. It’s important for investors to receive useful, timely, and accurate disclosure.
During the last three years alone, the number of reporting companies the Division oversees has increased by 18 percent to 7,836, primarily due to initial public offerings. In addition, merger activity has more than tripled 2020 levels in the last two fiscal years. In contrast, the Division’s staff is still approximately 17 percent below FY 2016.
Today’s budget request would grow the team to 454 FTEs. With this increase, the Division still would be five percent smaller than it was in FY 2016. Nonetheless, additional resources would allow the Division to serve investors more ably as markets grow and evolve.
Investment Management
The Division of Investment Management oversees the funds and advisers that steward nest eggs for millions of American investors.
It oversees more than 30,000 registered entities, including approximately 16,000 registered funds and 15,000 investment advisers.
As discussed earlier, we’ve seen significant growth in the number of investment advisers and private funds. Further, the assets managed just by private funds, now at approximately $25 trillion in gross assets, have surpassed the size of the entire U.S. commercial banking industry of approximately $23 trillion.
Overall, the combined assets managed by registered investment companies, private funds, and separately managed accounts the Division oversees has surpassed $100 trillion. Given this growth in the markets, we’ve asked for funding to support 238 FTEs.
Trading and Markets
The Division of Trading and Markets serves on the front line for maintaining fair, orderly, and efficient markets. Market monitoring and supervision are essential parts of the Division’s activity—especially during times of market stress.
The markets and the market participants we oversee represent a significant and growing number of market transactions as well as volume of trades. The Division oversees more than 3,500 broker-dealers, 24 national securities exchanges, 99 alternative trading systems, 50 securities-based swap dealers, and seven active registered clearing agencies, among other entities. Further, the Division is responding to an increasing number of public inquiries, up by more than 67 percent since FY 2019 to approximately 20,000 inquiries in FY 2022.
In FY 2024, we’ve requested 309 FTEs to support this important function of the Commission.
Economic Risk and Analysis
Economic analysis is critical to all of the agency’s work. The Division of Economic and Risk Analysis supports the Commission in every role, whether it’s enforcement or examinations, monitoring the markets, or rulemaking.
In the Enforcement context, the Division’s staff is instrumental in identifying potential wrongdoing, assessing ill-gotten gains, and working to return funds to harmed investors.
The Division’s economists are involved in every aspect of the agency’s rulemaking.Proposing and adopting releases include economic analyses related to efficiency, competition, and capital formation. Those analyses are included in proposing releases that are put out for public comment, and staff throughout the agency actively engages with the public to receive input, including on the economic analyses.
FY 2023 has gotten us to modestly above where we were in 2016 for FTEs. Given the critical nature of the Division’s work, though, for FY 2024, we’ve asked for funding to support 198 FTEs.
Additional Matters
Technology
We live in transformational times. The amount of data analysis that the SEC processes in the Division of Enforcement alone has grown 20 percent year over year for the last three years. Cyber threats have placed our financial sector on high alert. As technologies evolve, it is important that the SEC’s information technologies follow suit.
Thus, we have requested $393 million to support the Commission’s data analysis, cybersecurity, and other IT needs. This request assumes full use of an additional $50 million from the SEC Reserve Fund for multi-year IT projects and programs. To put these figures in context, this spending is dwarfed by what some of the biggest market participants spend in a month on technology.
Real Estate
Another important part of our budget is for offices and leases. We have offices in Washington, D.C., and 11 other places. The total cost in FY 2023 was five percent of our budget.
Over the years, we’ve worked with the General Services Administration (GSA) to rightsize our leasing footprint. In the last nine years, we have shed 140,000 rentable square feet across our facilities. We are in the process of shedding another 30,000 rentable square feet in our San Francisco and Fort Worth regional offices.
Further, we are preparing to vacate one of our three headquarters buildings in Washington, D.C., by the end of this fiscal year, resulting in a reduction of 210,000 square feet of space and approximately $14 million per year in savings.
With the finalization of a new Collective Bargaining Agreement, we look forward to reassessing our facility needs and working with GSA on efforts to relinquish additional space it deems marketable in the coming years.
Conclusion
Nearly two years into this role, I am grateful to work alongside this remarkable staff and my fellow Commissioners to help maintain America’s capital markets—the best in the world. We can’t take our leadership in capital markets for granted, though.
The SEC is working hard day in and day out to keep pace with the dramatic growth and change in the markets. This FY 2024 budget request would give the agency resources to better protect the American public.
I thank the Committee for providing me the opportunity to summarize this budget request.
I am pleased to take your questions.

2023.03.29 22:05 umich82063 moving to dsm - would love some advice from a local!

hi! im moving to dsm soon from a (very) small town in western iowa. im 22f, a professional, and hoping to live around other young people (not necessarily college students.) id like to live somewhere where it’s easy to meet people and there’s options for bars and things to do, but not super busy/loud/lots of traffic. would also like to be somewhere i feel safe, but I don’t really feel that any part of DSM is particularly dangerous.
i have two apartments narrowed down: one in west Des Moines, and one on the south side (near southridge mall.) based on what i stated above, does anyone have any advice on which neighborhood/area may be the right fit for me?
neither location is necessarily better than the other for work.
thank you!!

2023.03.29 22:05 pusseestankcandle Just started Concerta - many questions!

Hi! I 17F (if that matters?) started using 18mg concerta. To be more accurate though - its just the generic methylphenidate-hydrochloride - i read that makes very little to no difference).
I wasnt sure what flair to use, i generally have a LOT of questions. I am very sorry if this is a chaotic post. This is my first experience with stimulants and have no one to talk to about it because the meds are very regulated in my country and i dont know anyone who has ever used them.
The first two days were kind of a success, i was very high energy, alert, could focus on task at hand and didnt feel so damn bored and unmotivated all the time.
I have not noticed any improvement in being able to pay attention to other people though. I would also get lost in my own head a LOT easier and it is a lot more intense.
I haven't noticed many side effects except for the first day i was feeling kind of tense and my palms tend to sweat now. I also get a bit of blurry vision but that doesnt bother me much.
Although I did not get more productive and my parents said they see no difference, the way I go throughout my day is different.
I am much more alert, typically Id get mentally drained after pretty much anything. The first two days I feel like I was just thinking a lot more clear. This alone would make my life so much more bearable, but I feel like im not having NEARLY as much improvement as people tend to have. I assume this is just what normal people feel like when they have coffee?
Now its my third day, I'm still very alert but I do not feel like the meds have as much effect as they did on the first two days. I suppose it is normal for stimulants to feel a bit different the first few days, but i feel like the third day being rather underwhelming already is too soon. Especially when my attention hasn't improved that much.
Here are some of the questions. I did some research - even wayyy before taking any stimulants - but couldnt find a satisfying answer to these, any answer or personal experience is very appreciated!
ANY answer to any of the questions is very appreciated.

2023.03.29 22:05 spark908 How to make intricately dual extruded meshes without manual depth creation?

Here is a link to pictures of the file I am trying to slice.
https://www.reddit.com/usespark908/comments/125z0xd/dual_extruded_zero_depth_object/

Hello Makers. I'm having some issues slicing an object for dual extrusion. I am relatively new to dual extrusion and I'm trying to nail down the process for creating detailed meshes for 3d printing. I'm wondering if it is possible to slice an object for dual extrusion without solidifying or creating depth to the object. Is there a way for Cura(Or another slicer) to automatically create depth for an object like this? Every time I slice it, more than half of the object is missing. It has many holes, many empty layers, and in general is just a mess. The objects are made using a separate by color, at the intersection of faces. They are near perfect opposites of each other to my knowledge. I'm not quite sure where I'm going wrong, but I'm hoping that I can create models like this without an extensive amount of manual editing.
In general I'm just looking to be able to import objects like this to Cura and have it recognize that infill should be printed on the inside of the object. Solidifying the object makes the shape successfully slice, but then the inside is hollow, and it prints it as a shell with no infill inside. Support as infill is a half baked solution for me. If I have sturdy supports inside, the supports created on the outside are difficult to remove. If I make the supports thinner and easy to remove, the supports on the inside might not hold up as well. I've tried extensive stitching, fill all holes, and a myriad of other "Mesh fixes" in Cura, with no working results. I've also attempted to slice it in Luban which yielded the same errors in nearly the same positions.

Thanks for your time, any and all help is appreciated. Dual extruding has been such a fun learning curve, I can't wait to nail the pipeline from imagination to reality with this stuff!

I can provide printer settings if needed.

2023.03.29 22:04 LudwigVonGaming My only source of true joy always gets taken from me by my mom, please help

Hello, new poster here. For the past few years my verbally and mentally abusive mother has been constantly taking away my laptop and phone as punishment for literally anything the makes her angry, which is basically my existence pretty much. The problem is, my laptop and phone are the only ways I have to contact my friends, and especially my beloved boyfriend. These people are so fucking important to me to the point where when they are ripped away from me against my will, I find it nearly impossible to be anything but a depressed husk. My friends are my biggest source of joy and without them, even with all of my other sources of happiness, it's still not enough to outway the pure sadness I feel being all alone. I need a way to be able to remain in contact with at least one because I can't fucking take this stress and sadness anymore. So please please somebody help me on finding a way to either stop my situation from happening or an alternative way to stay in contact with my friends. Thank you.

Chapter 15: A Vile Night for the Living and the Dead

I injected some extra venom into the three dead bodies of the German soldiers before bounding over the wall and injecting venom into the nearest guard. He was standing by a metal building urinating when I quickly slammed my fangs into his neck and pumped venom in. He fell to the ground frozen but continued urinating for another few seconds. I fought off the urge to feed and instead let him live. He remained still, ten minutes passed, then twenty, then forty, until finally he stated to move again. Slowly he curled up into a ball and started clawing at his head. I watched as he hissed and rolled in pain for several minutes until finally stopping and lurched from side to side until he stood up in a hunched position. He stood, no longer a man, but a mindless beast, growling and snarling. Foaming at the mouth he turned to me and lunged like a rabid dog.
I let the power flow through me and raised a hand, “Halte.” (Stop) He fell to his knees and his face plowed into the dirt and gravel. Slowly he stood up, calm, just like the three men from earlier. Aside from his pants around his ankles, a new set of fangs, and blood red eyes, he seemed like any other fellow. “Mach dich anständig.” I commanded. (Make yourself decent) His head tilted to the side, as if to think about my order, then he reached down and pulled his pants up as well as fixing his belt and tucking in his shirt. This time I spoke in English, “Raise your right hand.” He did nothing. “Hebe deine rechte hand,” this time he followed orders.
“So, you follow my orders, but you have to understand them.” I said to him, even though he had no idea what I was saying. “Kannst du sprechen?” I asked. (Can you speak?)
In a low growl, the creature’s voice strained and twisted out a single reply, “Ja.” (Yes.) His cognitive abilities were limited but still there. In this state, thinking must have been rather difficult for it. It would never be a scholar, but it might make a fine warrior. Its muscles pulsated with every movement, but I heard no heartbeat.
“Ich möchte sehen, wie geschickt Sie als Krieger sind, gehen Sie und töten Sie so viele Leute wie möglich in diesem Lager.” I told it. (I want to see how skilled of a warrior you are, go and kill as many people in that camp as you can.) In a flash, it turned and ran towards the nearest group to us. It was not a quiet ordeal, it snarled and howled as it tore into their bodies with it hands and fangs. It didn’t fight like a soldier, with skill and trained techniques; it attacked like an animal. I heard their screams, and the confused shouts of others who witnessed the carnage, but they were quickly silenced too. Gun shots and yells polluted the air, until a few minutes later an eerie calm settled on the camp. A lucky shot had caught the beast in the heart, but the damage was already done. I counted thirty-three mangled remains. “A single monster is worth over thirty men.”
I left the camp and found the three dead men I had injected with venom fighting with one another as if they were rabid dogs. “Genug davon,” I used my power on them. (Enough of that.) They froze, one’s mouth was around another’s neck and black blood dripped from it. I looked them over, they were so different from the other one that someone could have honestly questioned if they were ever even human in the first place. They were shriveled up, like the creature in the morgue. Their greyish skin had become dried and cracked. Their eyes were a pale grey, with narrowed pupils, even though it was dark. I reasoned that they were either currently blind or hypersensitive to light. Their clothes had been torn to shreds from the fighting. One by one they let go of one another and faced me. “Kann einer von euch sprechen?” (Can any of you speak?) They all growled, but none said a word; like they understood what speaking was but were unable to actually do it. They truly were different from a living specimen. I looked at their bodies, each was covered in wounds, but none of them was healing like I would.
“Time for a test. Geh ins Lager und töte alle.” (Go into the camp and kill everyone.) Unlike the living one, these three were slow. They didn’t move anything like it did; instead, they scrabbled around on all fours like some kind of demonic dogs. Their fangs bared, they charged into the camp.
By the time the sun rose, I had performed several tests of this nature and had fifteen total creatures, seven created from the dead and eight from the living. The camp was in ruins, parts destroyed from battle, other parts were aflame. What was left was covered in blood and severed appendages; these creatures were viciously thorough. I could see unbridled malicious behind each of their eyes, so much so that it unnerved even me. They had my unsatiable hunger, but also a roaring fury. I don’t know how to describe myself, maybe as broken or vile, I know I’ve certainly been called worse, but them… they were evil. I knew they wanted to kill everything they saw, even me, but my abilities kept them in check. I couldn’t help but wonder… if I was a monster, what did that make them?
“How many beasts like you have I unknowingly released on this world?” I thought aloud. I decided that once the war was over, I would need to search everywhere I had been throughout my life and make sure I didn’t leave any behind. I may be long lived but I try to stay in the same ten countries; those are the countries whose languages I understand and speak. Which would be Romanian, Spanish, English, Russian, Mandarin, Japanese, German, Polish, and French.
I watched the sun just begin to peak over the mountainside and took shelter in what remained of one of the barracks. “Only one test left to perform.” I had given orders to all of the beasts, in fact I gave them all the same order… not to move, no matter what. The sun crested over the top of the mountain’s snow-capped peak and the light bathed the creatures. At first, smoke rose from their exposed flesh, then blisters formed, then each and every single one burst into flames. To my surprise, none of them moved, or even reacted to the fire and burns. I began to question if they could feel pain. The ones made from the living held out the longest, twice as long as the dead in fact, but within minutes all of the monsters were ash, not even the bones remained. A part of me was mortified at such a violent reaction to sunlight, another part of me was fascinated. I had spent time in sunlight before, it definitely has an effect, but nothing like that. I become weak, too weak to move if I stay in it uncovered long enough. Once during a test of my endurance, I even suffered blistering, but nothing like what I had just witnessed. “I must remember to run tests on this.” I told myself.
I turned my attention away from the ashes and corpses and towards my current situation. I was days overdue to meet up with the rest of the team, my partner was dead and rotting in the forest, and I have to explain how I managed to singlehandedly wipe out an entire German army encampment. I had at least half a day to think of a lie to tell that would be believable; that’s how long it would take me to rendezvous with the others. Since I was in the barracks, the was plenty of materials to wrap myself in, although some of it was burned it was still better than what I had now; a bloodied and bullet hole ridden German army uniform. I found a spare beige shirt and some light grey trousers; I traded the boots I had for a nicer pair of black, officer’s boots that had a much better fit. I also found gloves that went about halfway up to my elbow to protect my hands. For good measure I also put on a black button-up trench-coat and an old patched grey cloth hat; it reminded me of the type a newspaper delivery boy would wear.
Once I was as covered as I could manage, I set out and began my trek up the mountain to my comrade’s position. With blazing speed, I ran up the cliff, leaping over boulders and going in as straight a line as possible. I stopped only twice. Once to feed on a passing moose and again on a deer. By nightfall, I had the meet up location within sight. We had agreed on a signal that let them know that we were coming. If they were still there, they would see it. I was hopeful I had moved fast enough to meet the original deadline, but I was fairly certain I was still at least a day late. I pulled out a small square mirror from my pocket and aimed it towards their position. I placed my hand in an L shape and flicked the mirror up and down three times, then paused before repeating it twice; that was the signal that it was me and not an enemy. A few seconds passed and I saw a flash repeat the pattern from their position; that was the return signal. I walked slowly now, or at least at a normal human speed, and arrived at the campsite an hour later.
As I approached the camp, I smelt Reynolds and Baker before I saw them, one was in the camp and the other was behind me. I heard the chambering of a bullet into a rifle then, “hands up, and turn around.” It was Reynolds’s voice. I did as he instructed. As soon as he saw me, he lowered his gun and sighed. “Dang it, Alucard; you nearly gave me a heart attack. What are you wearing, and where is Akerman?”
“It was this or a German officer’s uniform that was a size too small.”
“Okay but where is Akerman?”
“He didn’t make it; he was shot in our escape. He’s dead.” I explained.
He lowered his head, “dang, that’s too bad. Was the mission a success at least?”
“More than expected, we took out the entire place, not just the artillery.”
“Whose there?” Baker called from the camp and poked his head around the entrance to the small cave.
“It’s Alucard,” Reynolds told him then slung the strap his rifle over his shoulder.
“Just Alucard?” Baker wondered.
“Yeah, Akerman didn’t make it.” Reynolds explained. Baker shook his head and performed a catholic cross, then pulled a cross neckless from inside his shirt and kissed it. “Alucard, you mentioned that the whole camp was destroyed, but how?” Reynolds asked as we walked over to Baker.
“I’ll explain while we pack up, let’s get out of here.”

Chapter 16: A Hero’s Welcome?

The lie I had decided on was simple, the artillery was close enough to the munitions that when they detonated the explosion took out half the camp. In the chaos Akerman and I had stolen two high caliber rifles and picked off as many as we thought necessary. Once we had done so we started to run, but one of the soldiers that remained shot Akerman as we fled. They seemed to believe me, and only asked a few follow up questions. “Why not run after blowing the artillery, why stay to pick off stragglers?” Baker wondered.
“We realized that there could have been someone who knew how to repair them, so we thought it was worth the risk… I still think we made the right call.” I said.
“Even with what happened to Akerman?” Reynolds asked. “We both took one look at the camp and knew it was probably going to be a suicide mission. Honestly, I’m amazed I survived.” After that they were satisfied, and we left the cave to go back to base. Just like last time, we traveled only under the cover of darkness, at least for the first half. Once we had left the danger zone, we felt it was safe enough to travel during the day too. That took a day off of our journey. Three days was all it took, and we were safely giving our after-action debrief to the captains and majors in their tents in the trenches. The fighting had stopped for the time being, but I could tell from the smell of hormones that tensions were still high.
Our debrief was given to Captain Lance, the man who originally gave us the mission, as well as Major Blanchet. We sat around a table, each giving our version of what happened. Once the others had finished, they were dismissed as they didn’t need to be there for the rest of it and were ready to shower and get a full night of sleep. Only The major, the captain, and I were left. I detailed the mission exactly as it happened up until the detonation of the artillery. I made sure to tell them the same thing that I told Baker and Reynolds, including the slightly altered details of Akerman’s demise.
“Perhaps we can locate Lieutenant Akerman’s body for a proper burial once we march through there.” Major Blanchet stated.
I was surprised to hear this, and it must have showed on my face because Captain Lance felt the need to explain. “With everything you have told us, the destruction of the artillery as well as most of the encampment, we have a clear shot to take the enemy by surprise.”
“They will be expecting an attack from the front, not the flank.” The major added. I was slightly worried, the camp was in ruins, but I neglected to do away with any of the bodies that I didn’t turn into undead. If they were inspected then it would be obvious that they were not killed by bullets or explosions, but it would seem as if they were mauled to death by animals. I even feed on some of them and allowed my creations to feed as well so I could observe, meaning many of the corpses would be without blood.
A soldier walked in and announced, “Major Blanchet, a letter has arrived for you sir. It’s marked urgent.”
“I can handle the rest of the debrief major,” Captain Lance said.
“Thank you, Captain,” the Major said and excused himself walking out of the tent.
Captain Lance turned to me, “tell me Alucard, is what you have told us today the truth?”
“Yes sir.”
“Then please explain to me why I keep getting the feeling that you are lying. Not about everything, but as soon as you and Akerman go off on your own I feel like that’s when the lies start.” He said and stood up.
“It’s the truth sir, every word.” I lied. The captain walked away from the table and turned his back to me to look at a chalk board with pictures and diagrams hung up on it by strings and clothespins. He removed several pictures and brought them back to the table.
Pointing at them as he spoke, he said, “these are stills taken by scouts of the camp you were sent to. Here is the artillery and here are the munitions building that our scouts spotted. They are nowhere nearly close enough to have detonated due to the TNT we gave you. So, something doesn’t feel right.”
“Sir, the scouts were wrong, or they moved the munitions building.” I told him. He was getting too aggressive, and I had decided to use my abilities to make him believe me. I didn’t want to as I prefer to only plunder around with enemy minds unless absolutely necessary. But then something I never expected to happen… did.
His eyes flashed a pale green and he spoke, “tell me the truth, tell me what happened at the enemy camp.” My brain felt foggy, and I began having thoughts enter my mind that I did not think, but I never lost control of myself. I fought and wrestled control of my mind back from the captain and his unforeseen power.
I was in control, but not of my emotions, “GET OUT OF MY HEAD!” I bared my fangs and slammed the table, breaking it in the process. Captain Lance quickly stepped back and drew his pistol, pointing it at my head. He lost his concentration, and his power left my mind, allowing me to regain my composure.
“What are you?” He asked. The captain reached into his pocket and pulled out a small silver cylinder. I watched as it melted and reformed into a long thin metal stick of some kind.
“Apologies,” I said and retracted my fangs, “I did not mean to yell, but if you attempt to use Mind Magic on me again, I will be forced to hurt you… badly.”
“You are not human, and you know of magic, I will ask again… who, or what, are you?”
“My name is Vladimir Dracula, and I am what you may know as a vampire. Now you will answer my question; did Merlin send you?”
His eyes widened, “you know of Merlin?”
“You didn’t answer my question.” I said.
His gun was still aimed at my head, “no, Merlin did not send me. I haven’t seen him in a very long time.”
“I take it that means you are one of his knights then, yes?” I asked.
He nodded, “I didn’t think vampires were actually real.”
“Well until a few years ago, I didn’t think that Merlin and King Arthur were real either, so no hard feelings.”
“If I put my gun down, are you going to try and eat me?” He asked.
“I don’t eat my allies; I do have standards.” He put his gun down and we both sat in our chairs at the destroyed table.
“So, what really happened at the camp?” Lance, who I found out later was really named Lancelot, asked.
“Up until the artillery, everything I said was true, but the explosion didn’t destroy the camp.”
“And Akerman?” He wondered.
“He really was shot and killed, but it didn’t happen like I said.” We sat there for an hour, I no longer had a reason to hide the truth, so I told him everything.
“So… you created undead monsters to destroy the camp, then you let them be killed by the sun?”
“Yes.”
“Did you do that to Akerman?”
“Of course not, he was an ally.”
“How did you get these abilities?” He asked.
“I don’t particularly feel like telling you my life story, just ask Merlin when you see him.”
“Speaking of which, when did you see him last, and where? I have been searching for him for a few years now, ever since my memories began to return.” He questioned.
“The last time I saw Merlin was in Italy back in the 1910s, and he was old then, so he has probably reincarnated by now.” He seemed disappointed to hear that. “Aren’t there supposed to be quite a few knights, where are the rest?” I asked.
“I haven’t located any of them yet.” He said. We talked a few more minutes about the mission, and what I knew about Merlin.
“I think that’s everything Aluca- uh... Dracula.”
“Just call me Alucard, in fact… forget you know anything about me. It’s what’s best for everyone.” I told him.
He took a deep breath and stayed quiet for a moment, “fine, but I’m keeping an eye on you.”
“Fine, but if you insist on watching me then I have a request. I work better at night, you’re a captain you should have the ability to switch me completely to night shifts.”
“…Fine, I’ll see what I can do.”

Chapter 17- 1915

Everything went back to normal after that, I was issued a new weapon to replace the one I lost and for my actions and the success of my mission Major Blanchet gave me a promotion to Lance-Corporal. Captain Lance was able to get me moved to night shift as I requested, and true to his word he kept a close eye on me by also joining night shift. He had me switched to his platoon so that he would be my superior. We stayed out of each other’s way as much as possible, as long as I followed the orders I was issued by my Sargent, he seemed happy. Although I think having me around still worried him, but he seemed to trust that I wouldn’t eat any of the men.
The enemy had been attacking sporadically, short bursts to test our defenses. I was patrolling one night, not getting ready to hunt just watching for enemies, when I heard a few officers talking about news from all over the world. It was the first time in a while we had gotten any news at all, and most of it was bad. Zeppelins were dropping bombs on England’s coast, a submarine blockade had been declared by Germany against British shores, Britain had responded to a call of air from Russia against Turkish attacks, Russia suffered heavy losses after the battle of Masurian Lakes, and Germany had released hundreds of tons of poison gas against allied French and Canadian troops.
“Can you believe this, it’s only July and the world’s already on fire?” One of the men said.
“It’s been on fire, we are only just now hearing about it,” the other man replied.
“You two realize we are in the middle of a war-zone in a foreign country and have been for nearly a year right? We already knew the world was on fire because we have been in the middle of the flames.” A man, who was not a part of the conversation and simply interjected, said.
The other two stayed quiet for a moment, “…good point.”
I walked over to them, “where did you hear about this from?”
“I heard I from Captain Lance, and he said he read it from a stack of newspapers that got shipped to us.”
“Thanks,” I said and went back to my patrol. After my shift finished, I went to find these newspapers. I was just as interested to read what was happening as everyone else was. If Captain Lance had them, then they would probably be in the officer’s tent, or the communications tent. I checked the officer’s tent first. Captain Lance was there drinking coffee and reading a letter. Things weren’t as tense between us as they were at first, but that didn’t make them comfortable. “Captain Lance,” his eyes lifted from his letter, and I noticed he gripped his mug slightly tighter.
“Yes?”
“I was told that a shipment of newspapers arrived, are the men allowed to read them?”
He relaxed a bit and loosened his grip, “oh, yes, but they were taken to the mess to be put on display. We figured that was the best way for everyone to get a chance to read them without having everyone coming and going from the tent all day.”
“Thank you,” I said and left. The “mess” was at the back of the trenches. Really it was just a shack that cooked everyone food and handed it out on steel trays. I walked there and next to the shack was a wooden fence that was not there the last time I was here. It was about shoulder height and over twenty feet long. But the biggest eye catcher was that every inch of it was covered in newspapers. They had been nailed down at the top and sides so that people could flip them over and read the backs. A crowd of five or six people was gathered around the fence, some reading the same page, others were reading alone.
I’m not one for sentimentality, but there was something I wanted to know: how my home was doing. I was born in a small Russian village that I later learned became a small Polish town called Osowiec. I had heard that Russia was having a hard time against the Germans, and I wanted to know more about it. “Anybody see anything about Russia’s front?” I asked.
“Over here Alucard,” one of the men said and jerked a thumb at a page next to him.
“Thanks.” The article was about how the Germans had been trying to take several key positions over the last few months. The Eastern front was apparently nothing like it was here in the West, there were no fights ending in stalemate, no truces, and nothing even close to civilized combat. We had heard that the Germans were employing chlorine gas attacks in mass, but no one here had ever experienced it. It was commonly employed on the Eastern front, as well as other unsavory tactics. Then I read it:
German forces are still attempting to take multiple forts across Russian provinces. Retreats have been ordered from many areas, but some still remain. Most surprisingly is Fort Osowiec in Russian Poland. This fort has held its ground longer than anyone has expected it to, German troops try almost daily to take the fort but to no avail.
My home was under siege. It was surprisingly distressing to read; everyone I knew from there has long since died over a thousand years ago. Yet, those words bounced around in my mind, I couldn’t seem to let them go. Days passed, and I grew more anxious the more I thought of it. Perhaps it was some long dormant territorial instinct passed on from the beast that transformed me, the Bestia Krwi, or maybe it was some flicker of my former human life crying out. Either way, no matter how I tried, I simply could not put it out of my mind. I needed to act, lest I lose my sanity thinking about it. I decided to talk with the only person I could about it… Captain Lance.
I went to his private quarters and knocked on his door, which was a privilege the officers had that the rest of the men did not. Most of us made do with old blankets to keep our privacy, and to keep the bugs out. “Enter,” his voice called from inside. I opened the door and walked in. His quarters were bare, except for a single bed and trunk at the foot of it, as well as a desk laden with paperwork. It was a small and dimly lit room, but being so empty, it did not feel claustrophobic.
He turned and seemed rather shocked at seeing me, “Alucard? Did you need something?”
“I need to talk to you about something.” I said seriously and closed the door behind me.
“What’s wrong?” He asked and spun his chair around to face me.
“I think I need to leave for a while.”
His eyes widened, “What happened?”
“Nothing, I just have business I need to attend to.” He relaxed, perhaps he thought that his worst fear had been realized and I had eaten one of his men.
“What kind of business?”
“My home, where I was born, is under siege from German forces. I feel I must go and do something.”
He scoffed, “what do you plan on doing against an entire siege?”
“I don’t know, but I feel I must at least try to help them.” I felt like a sentimental fool; I knew I could do nothing against an entire army, yet every cell in my body screamed for action. The captain looked at the pile of paperwork on his desk and sighed.
“A soldier cannot simply leave his post… however, you are not a normal soldier.”
“I imagine if I were you would never even consider such a request, but let’s be honest… I scare you.”
“More accurately, what you might do to my men scares me.” We looked intensely at one another, as if daring the other in some way. “I will approve it on one condition.”
“Condition?”
“When you leave… don’t come back. I will tell everyone who asks that you grew ill and were rendered unable to fight and were shipped home. So, when you leave, stay gone.”
I thought for a moment, “…agreed.”

2023.03.29 22:04 ohsus Do I (26 F) reach out to my old best friend (26 F)

My best friend of 12 years and I got in a huge fight 3 years ago and haven’t talked since. I know you’re only hearing my side of story but I’ll try to be as transparent as possible. We have completely different lifestyles and views. When I was younger we got along amazing, however, once we lived together it started going downhill. She would get mad at me if I didn’t want to go out to clubs or if I would hang out with other people. I finally moved across the country with my then bf now husband and she flipped out. When I bought my first house she wasn’t happy for me. When we would FaceTime she would randomly ask if my bf and I fought and one time she kept complimenting his muscles when he was in the background. Finally, I brought up how I was feeling about her behavior and she lashed out and started listing all the things I’ve ever done wrong. I acknowledged what she said and that I’m not perfect and am always willing to work on myself. That was until she called me racist?? My husband is Hispanic and I am the furthest thing from that. I literally have no idea why she said that and I got really really mad. At that point I blocked her on everything. Now, over the years I have felt sad because she wasn’t always like that and she was an amazing friend and I don’t know what made her change. I’ve been considering adding her on socials just to stay acquaintances and be able to keep up with each others lives because I do still care how she’s doing and I still value the friendship that we had. I have a young daughter now and am careful who I let in my life because I am really happy and don’t want negativity or drama. I don’t know if I should add her and reach out? What would you do? In my heart I know I didn’t do anything wrong and she has issues but I’m having a hard time just letting go forever. I think time away from each other was good but idk if she’s matured. My dad still has her on socials and she’s always partying still (idc I just feel like she might not have changed and she doesn’t respect lifestyles that aren’t the same as her). Thank you for listening to my rant. I think about our friendship all the time and I don’t know what to do.

Im guessing shes signing that when she communicates about it she feels terrible and embarrassed? I do not know the 5-handshape sign she is signing – does that mean many times? And near the end she sigbs that she wishes that people with pcos could do something – i do not know that sign either. Could someone help me please?

2023.03.29 22:02 FriendlyStranger566 I wish i could commit suicide

I wish I had the balls. I wish I wasn’t afraid of dying so that I could commit suicide and be gone from this place. From this world. I genuinely hate everything. There is nothing holding me here anymore. I can’t take it anymore to wake up and just feel awful every single day. I don’t see the enjoyment in life anymore. I haven’t for a really long time now. I really try. Truly I try every fucking day to make my day better by doing something I enjoy but everything backfires. Nothing feels right anymore. Nothing works anymore. I can’t do a single thing that doesn’t end up ruined. If I want to go on a walk in the forest nearby cause that always makes me feel better it ends it fucking storming. Want to go to dinner with my family? I end up ruining it and my mom basically told me she wants nothing to do with me. Want to do something fun with my boyfriend cause that always makes me feel better. I end up crying alone on the street cause he walked away when I started crying because of being so depressed and ended up being approached by a strange man asking where I live and pushing me to go with him. My boyfriend was nowhere near me and just fucking left me in that situation.
I truly are trying to feel happy again. See the enjoyment in life again. I really am trying to not hate myself for certain things I did in life. Not blame myself anymore. Accept things that happened in my childhood. I have therapy two times a week for a year now. I picked up my hobby’s again. Made more friends and actually talk to people. Started going outside more. I just don’t get what I am doing it for. For this mediocre life?

2023.03.29 22:02 wlog9 How to break into MLOps Engineering roles

Hello, I'm a data scientist with over 2 years of experience. Over this time I've realized that training models to make predictions and exploring data is not something that motivates me in a job. Instead, I want to build things.
I've been reading about MLOps practices and I feel that a role in MLOps engineering would be perfect for me since it combines ML models and technical/engineering tasks. In particular, I'm very interested in the deployment, monitoring and maintenance of ML applications.
I'd like to switch jobs in the near future and would like advice on how to break into this more software engineer like role (compared to the role of a data scientist). What is a good project that I can make to showcase my abilities to recruiters? Are there any leetcode problems-like ways to study for coding interview questions that may be useful for a MLOps engineer position interview?
Thanks!!

2023.03.29 22:02 Embarrassed_War_4887 Should I expedite my passport?

I have international travel plans August 10 (though I need to visit family near the airport at least a couple days before my trip) and current processing times say 10-13 weeks for routine processing, and 7-9 weeks for expedited processing. I also read that it can take up to two weeks each way to ship to a passport agency, that’s that’s potentially another 4 weeks. I’m going to go in tomorrow 3/30 to submit my application. If I allow 17 weeks that puts me receiving my passport at the very end of July. My question is, do we think that my passport will arrive within that stated time frame or could it take longer than that? If it might take longer I should probably expedite but I really would rather avoid the $60 fee.
Also, if I apply with routine processing now but decide later to expedite, does that expedited processing time start from when the passport agency received my application or from when I pay for expedited shipping?
And if your passport doesn’t come in time and you have to go to a passport agency super last minute before your trip to get a quickly issued passport, how much does that cost? Do you have to pay the fees again?
I’m also wondering if you are having trouble not getting your routinely processed passport and you contact your state representative and they are able to expedite it for you, do you have to pay for the expedited process or do they do it for you/get it waived?
Does anyone have experience with any of this?

2023.03.29 22:01 linoleum_trim ADVICE NEEDED re morning sunlight optimization protocol

ADVICE NEEDED re morning sunlight optimization protocol
Some of you Hube-o-nauts may remember me from earlier posts questioning how to maintain forward motion optical flow whilst simultaneously looking at the sun during morning walks. TL;DR: didn’t want to walk backwards due to lack of mouse studies supporting its effectiveness, decided to leave my family and migrate continuously eastward by foot (couldn’t find good mouse studies supporting beneficial effects of sedentary family life on circadian rhythm).
The map above recounts my self-optimization journey thus far.
I’m about to face an impediment (in the red circle) at some point in the next few days of my eastward migration walk. Seemingly can’t walk any further East. Considered swimming, but concerned about:
1). lack of mouse studies showing beneficial effect of morning sunlight viewing whilst *swimming* (as opposed to *walking*, for which there *is* ample evidence both empirical [see: Larson, A.’s seminal 1997 paper “Neurochemical effects of continuous morning sunlight viewing whilst maintaining forward optical flow in mice”] and anecdotal [see: well, we don’t need a study to see how many morning sun viewing forward walking mice are wildly successful small business owners and/or healthcare professionals]). 2). I’m not a strong swimmer (see orange circle on map documenting my near drowning at the confluence of the Missouri and Mississippi rivers).
Any thoughts on my next steps? I have about $150,000 in my checking account from secretly selling my family’s house a few days ago.

Watch THIS Wednesday March 29, 2023
Happy Watch This Wednesday, Hive! How does everyone feel about last week's season premiere? We're all EARS for your ongoing questions, theories, and speculation. If you haven't already, check out the The Hive After Dark and our weekly recap episode, both available to watch or listen to in the usual places at YellowjacketsHive.com. Only a couple more days until we get Yellowjackets episode 202 - "Edible Complex." Stay-tuned for discussions here, of course. If you're in need of some other shows to watch while we patiently wait for Yellowjackets to return this week, here you go! Onto the shows...

Missed this one - MUST-WATCH!

  • Swarm (Amazon Prime) premiered earlier this month and for some reason it wasn't on my radar. Well, now it is BIG TIME. Another TV podcast pointed out we may like it, and I'm SOLD! It's creepy, disturbing, and it even includes actual bee buzzing audio tracks throughout which is super creepy and strange and I love it. I had no idea Swarm was loosely based on true stories of internet rumors, including inspiration drawn from Beyonce's hive. Definitely worth the watch! I know it's good when I'm not even looking at my phone while I watch. Billie Eilish (who I also love) makes an appearance this season, and her character is based on a real cult. Between the buzzing, upcoming cult and creepiness - this is a must-watch for Yellowjackets fans. Prove me wrong... I'd love for us to cover this show with another TV podcast - contact us if that's you and then I'll just need to convince Emily to watch it {hint hint, co-host ;-)}.

Premiering picks of the week

  • Doogie Kamealoha, M.D. (Disney+) — Season 2 premieres on March 31. While this is the exact opposite of a series like Yellowjackets, my whole family loved the first season, me especially given I was OBSESSED with the original Doogie Howser, M.D. with Neil Patrick Harris. I literally had his poster on my wall as a kid. This is a cute watch, and it takes place in Hawaii which is my spirit location (like a spirit animal but a location, lol).
  • The Power (Amazon Prime) — The show is described as "teenage girls suddenly and mysteriously develop a special power that allows them to electrocute people at will." SciFi isn't normally my thing (with exceptions), but this looks interesting and has Toni Collette and John Leguizamo in whom I both love. Thought the teenage girls would also appeal to Yellowjackets fans.

Upcoming premieres of interest (in date order)

  • Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (Amazon Prime) The final season premieres on April 14!! Here's a flashback to that time I actually bought the Tupperware placed in the show. Brilliant product placement with easy monetization! I love creative marketing.
  • Firefly Lane (Netflix) Season 2 part 2 will close out the series and will air on April 27, a couple of months earlier than planned. I didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I did (not a huge Katherine Heigl fan, but I do LOVE Sarah Chalke). Never read the book, but am considering it after the series ends at the recommendation of one of our readers/commenters from last week.
  • The Afterparty (Apple TV+) Season 2 premieres on April 28 and I can't wait for this one! Season one was easy to watch and very funny with a little mystery mixed in. It's an easy watch.
  • Fatal Attraction (Paramount+) Season 1 premieres on April 30 and I may try it.

Casual, weekly, and occasional watches

  • A Million Little Things (Hulu) The final season is now in progress, new episodes drop weekly. It's moving a little slow which is even more indicative that it's a good time for this one to end. I feel like some of the storylines are contrived and just too forced. Looking forward to the end.
  • Abbott Elementary (Hulu) It continues to be a solid family watch. Comedy genius.
  • Bel Air (Peacock) Season 2 premiered and I've been watching with my husband and son. We enjoy it and look forward to the rest of the season, which now also features former The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air star Tatyana Ali who is NOT be playing her former role of Ashley Banks. Note, this is an adult drama series vs. the original which was a family-oriented sitcom. The reboot was definitely made for adults and original fans versus made for a younger, current day audience.
  • Bones (Hulu) I randomly started watching this as background/filler TV when I'm doing laundry, cleaning, falling asleep etc. Great show and I can't believe I've never watched it! For a show about bones and murder, it's pretty funny!
  • The Company You Keep (ABC/Hulu) I'm absolutely loving it and look forward to watching each week. Definitely worth a try if you're in the market for a weekly watch.
  • Daisy Jones & The Six (Amazon Prime) If you've read my prior posts you saw that I enjoyed this but don't think it's as edgy as the book. I finished all of the episodes. It was definitely entertaining but just not as good as the book. There's chatter of a possible second season or spin-off, which is surprising given it was dubbed a Miniseries. If you haven't read the book yet, I HIGHLY recommend you do after watching and I can almost guarantee you'll enjoy it more than the show. Order it here. You can also listen to the actual album from the TV band! Brilliant marketing.
  • East New York (CBS) This one tends to be more background TV. There's a lot of overacting but overall the stories are watchable and I tolerate them. I can see this moving off of my list when the season ends.
  • Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (HBO) - John Oliver is one of our quintessential weekly watches, I love a good take on news with a comedy spin.
  • The Last of Us (HBO) WHAT A SEASON FINALE from a couple of weeks ago; I'm still reeling over it! I'm on the edge of my seat for a second season; Pedro Pasal and Bella Thorne are both just so incredible. Major props to this series adapted from a video game - something I never expected to fall in love with, especially since I swore off post-apocalyptic zombie shows after I dropped off of TWD in Season 8. I'll keep this one on the list for a few more weeks for those who may discover it here and opt to watch.
  • Lucky Hank (AMC) Loved the first episode, now I need to find a way to keep watching it as I don't have AMC. If you have it, let me know what you think of the subsequent episodes. "From the executive producers of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, Bob Odenkirk is Lucky Hank. An English department chairman at an underfunded college, Professor Hank Devereaux toes the line between midlife crisis and full-blown meltdown, navigating the offbeat chaos in his personal and professional life – oddly proving tantrums get better with age." AMC Not to mention Mireille Enos from The Killing is in it! I LOVED LOVED LOVED The Killing and can't wait to see Mireille on my screen again with Bob Odenkirk who is also one of my faves. Rotten Tomatoes has it at 94%.
  • The Mentalist (HBO) My son has adopted this show as a new favorite so we've been watching it together a few nights a week. It's good, though dated; I've always been a fan of crime and detective shows so it checks that box for me.
  • Mythic Quest (Apple TV+) As someone who doesn't play video games at all I questioned whether or not I'd be into it, but it's more like The Office in that it's a comedy that takes place in a workplace. They just happen to be video game developers/producers which makes for an interesting story. The cast includes Rob McElhenney of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, along with Charlotte Nicdao as Poppy Li (LOVE her character), comic relief Jessie Ennis as Jo, and others. Worth a watch, there are 3 seasons in total, we're almost done with the available episodes.
  • *NEW\* Nancy Drew (HBO) Fun fact about me, one of my favorite possessions is a stunning full collection of the Nancy Drew books by Carolyn Keene. I acquired it after being interviewed by the seller to ensure I would not be turning around and reselling the collection. I passed the test! It's taken me too long to watch the series, but thanks to a nice nudge from one of my besties and fellow Nancy Drew fans, I finally started. I'm on episode 4 and loving it so far! It's a great balance of keeping some things from the book and making it more modern. There's a ghost element, but it's not "too much" it's just right.
  • Poker Face (Peacock) Season 1 ended a few weeks ago but I'm going to keep this here for anyone looking for a new show. It's an easy one to watch, infusing a perfect amount of mystery and comedy into it. Natasa Lyonne is a freaking genius. A fun watch for Yellowjackets fans.
  • Shrinking (Apple TV+) Love this series, and the first season wrapped up nicely. Shrinking was renewed for a second season. I'll take this off of my list next week but will keep it for now to encourage others to watch. 5 Stars from me.
  • *NEW\* Top Chef World All-Stars (Bravo) The 20th season of this quintessential cooking show takes to London with worldwide contestants this season. I gave up on Hells Kitchen seasons ago, but have generally kept up with Top Chef*.* I love Padma, Tom, and Gail!
  • True Detective (HBOMax) My husband randomly put on Season 3 a few weeks ago and I'm in! I enjoyed the first season but never got into the second. I just can't stay away from murdery shows. We're casually watching when we can.
  • True Lies (Paramount+) I only watched this one because Steve Howey (Kevin from Shameless) stars in it. The first episodes are okay, but it didn't draw me in quite the same as another recent premiere (kind of similar) The Company You Keep did. Some movies should maybe be kept as movies was my first thought. Still haven't got past episode 3.
  • Survivor (CBS) Season 44 started on March 1 and wow what an interesting group of contestants! I'll drop my projected winner here soon.
  • UnPrisoned (Hulu) — Season 1 premiered on March 10, starring one of my favorites, Kerry Washington! The pilot was good, I enjoyed it, but did find myself scrolling a bit. I've been watching subsequent episodes in the background and it's not bad, just not exceptional either.
  • Will Trent (Hulu) I've gotta say I have gone back-and-forth on this show, but it's a now a permanent fixture in the weekly watch category. This past week's episode was a good one!
  • Wynonna Earp (Netflix) A friend of the podcast is part of this fandom and introduced me to the series, and I'm still pretty early into it but it's a fun watch. If you were a Buffy person, odds are you will love this.
  • Yellowjackets (Showtime) Season 2 made its triumphant return on March 24 for Showtime app subscribers and March 26 everywhere else, with times noted above. Rotten Tomatoes has it 100% certified fresh! Be sure to connect with us at YellowjacketsHive.com for updates and our recent content for you to consume. LEND US AN EAR, WILL YOU?
  • You (Netflix) After taking this off of my watch list, I decided to give it another shot with You's 4th season after I had a hard time getting into the first couple of episodes. I'm glad I did; the twists have been enjoyable and I still have a lot to go. I guess Joe Goldberg is just too hard to give up...

New & other shows I plan to watch but haven't had time:

  • *NEW\* Class of '07 (Amazon Prime) — Season 1 premiered on March 17 and this one wasn't on my radar until my friend Shari of TeenDramaWhore texted me the trailer and commented, "This looks like the comedy version of Yellowjackets," so naturally here I am adding it to my list! I put the first episode on the other night and fell asleep, but that had less to do with the show than it did my stress and exhaustion from that particular day (IYKYK...). I will try this one again, for sure.
  • The Flight Attendant (HBOMax) season 2 Is it even worth it? I heard it wasn't great...
  • Jack Ryan (Amazon Prime) I absolutely loved the first two seasons and am eager to get caught up on season 3. While I had initially thought I'd only ever see John Krasinski as Jim on The Office, I've gotta say he's rocked the role of Jack Ryan, the total opposite of Jim.
  • *NEW\* The Night Agent (Netflix) — Season 1 premiered March 23 on Netflix. "While monitoring an emergency line, a vigilant FBI agent answers a call that plunges him into a deadly conspiracy involving a mole at the White House." I'll give this one a go - though with True Lies and The Company You Keep, I fear it may be one too many action shows in my rotation (though Netflix does coin it a "mystery, the trailer look very action-y.)
  • *NEW\* Rabbit Hole (Paramount+) Season 1 premiered on March 26. According to Paramount+, "Nothing is what it seems when John Weir (Kiefer Sutherland), master of corporate espionage, finds himself at the center of a shadowy conspiracy." I love Kiefer and this seems to be right up his alley given his time on 24 and Designated Survivor.
  • Restaurants at the End of the World (National Geographic / Apple TV+) — Season 1 premiered on March 21. Kristen Kish (whom I loved on Top Chef) hosts, and "travels the world in search of the people, places, culture and traditions behind the world’s most remote restaurants." This will be a great background show once I start.
  • Succession (HBO) I've only watched a few episodes but it's been on my list to binge. Apparently I didn't get it watched in time for the season 4 premiere which happened on March 26. This season will be the last one for the series. Succession has won 13 Emmys and continues to be the talk of the TV town, I've gotta get on it! With them out of the way, hopefully that will open up some Emmys opportunities for our beloved Yellowjackets.
  • Truth Be Told (AppleTV+) season 3 Can I watch season 3 without having watched season 2? I just couldn't get into the last season.
  • *NEW\* Up Here (Hulu) — Season 1 premiered on March 24. Now, I'm not normally a "musical rom com" person, but I do adore Mae Whitman from her days on Parenthood (that and Brothers and Sisters were my This is Us before This is Us) so I do plan to watch and see if the pilot draws me in enough to continue. My husband is not into musicals, so I'll really have to find time to fit this one in.

New season release dates, some TBD, all on my radar*:

  • The Bear (FX/Hulu) — Good news! We finally have a teaser and season 2 premiere date! There are 10 episodes coming at us this summer, and I cannot wait!!
  • Cobra Kai (Netflix)
  • Cruel Summer (Hulu/Freeform) It looks like we can expect season 2 this summer, plenty of time to catch up on season 1!
  • The Handmaid's Tale (Hulu)
  • The Morning Show (Apple TV+) Based on our Google search, "Apple TV+ hasn't released an official release date for The Morning Show season 3. Filming just wrapped on February 9, 2023, so you can likely expect season 3 to premiere in mid to late 2023"
  • Only Murders in the Building (Hulu) We plan to cover this series in a podcast crossover episode coming in the next month or so. Stay-tuned!
  • Severance (Apple TV+)
  • Virgin River (Netflix) Rumor has it Season 5 will premiere in July 2023.
\If you've seen news on premiere dates for these please comment and drop a link!*

2023.03.29 22:00 spacklepants I can’t share fun stuff in my life without sounding like I’m bragging.

Just visited some friends who are expecting their second baby. Very happy for them. But it seems like the only things we can talk about are the baby, the other baby or our husbands’ jobs. Our upcoming trip that my husband is excited about and proud to be able to afford (he worked his ass off his whole life to bring himself out of poverty) is barely asked about. I mean I don’t expect outright enthusiasm but it came up and after one question (where are you going) we moved back to the aforementioned topics. Nowhere near the same attention we offer to their upcoming birth and current kid. It just makes me feel so awkward. Like I’m not bragging. I’m just excited! And I can’t share that.

2023.03.29 21:59 QuestionsAccount2286 Tamed a feral cat. Now I'm moving. What to do?

I spent COVID making friends with the feral cat that lives under my apartment. Now I'm leaving the country and don't know what's best for him.

NOTES UP TOP: I'm pretty sure he was already a TNR so that's not a concern (probably 3 to 5 years old). This is also an area with very few strays - so no turf wars that I've seen. And the apartment is literally on the beach - I've never seen him go near a road.

Initially, I just wanted to make friends (and for him to have an indoor option for when the weather was particularly bad), so I spent a long time (and a lot of chicken) making friend with the little guy. But it escalated and now I'm his best-friend and he spends half the day inside. He doesn't let anyone else get near him but lets me hold him like a baby and does typical house cat stuff... BUT he also still freaks out if I don't let him outside when he asks for it (and he's only used a litter box once). He's still fully feral for anybody that's not me. The neighbors like him (as a mouser) and leave food out for him but he runs away terrified (or fights me) if they approach.

If I thought he could be happy as a house pet, I would just find him a good home. But the only life he's known is this beach house and I don't know how well he would adapt to being in a city.

I'm moving to Germany and definitely can't have a cat in the temporary housing I'll be in while finding an apartment. I haven't ruled out the idea of coming back for him (after I find an apartment) but I don't know if it would be cruel to move him across the world like that. I'm also not really big on pets and would prefer not to have one - the only reason I'm considering it is because I hate the idea of this poor creature being sad.

He lived just fine for years before I got here and I don't know for sure that he doesn't have a colony (I've seen other cats in the past but it's been about a year since the last sighting). I'll be taking him to the vet before I leave regardless just as good measure.

My question is really about what the kindest move is. Right now he is a feral cat that is well established in his territory and gets some food from locals in exchange for mousing BUT also has spent the last 1.5 years getting daily cuddles from me and spending most of the day sleeping in my apartment and gets daily canned food and treats, etc..

I deeply regret taming him. It happened slowly enough that I never stopped to consider the consequences. I've tried to help him make closer friends with the neighbors but the second someone else is around he goes feral again.

What's should I do?

2023.03.29 21:59 Ieatflowers68 Just an average Brit looking for advice on a solo holiday in Boston.

Alright.
I’m looking to travel to your lovely city for a solo 10 day trip sometime in late May or early/mid June.
I’ve never been to Boston, but it caught my interest primarily because it’s lathered in history, at least by US standards ;), because it seems to be compact enough to get around via walking and public transport, and because I heard you lot love a good drink, (again, by US standards).
First things first, I’m wondering where to stay. I want decent proximity and access to the city centre via public transport, but not too expensive (no more than $150/night ideally). After a quick search on AirBnB I’m currently thinking Inman Square area or the area around Boston College, as these come at around $120 /night for a room in a shared house.
I’d be interested to know if these areas are recommended, and if there’s good public links to and from the city (especially going into the evening and nighttime)? Would a hotel be cheaper potentially?
I like anything to do with history, so museum or historical tour recommendations would be appreciated.
In terms of nightlife, I hear you have a pretty good pub scene which I plan to make use of. What sort of closing times do the bars and pubs have, and is it best to head to the city centre for drinking, or are there lots of bars and clubs on offer further out too? And as a single man with a British accent, it would be a shame not to make use of my Love Actually charm (if you haven’t seen it type in ‘Love Actually bar scene’) to meet some lovely ladies. I’m not expecting it to be quite like in that film, but I imagine having the accent will get me some level of interest from the ladies, will it not?
Finally, weather looks pretty good for this time of year (by English standards), so I’m assuming tshirt and jeans/shorts will suffice in May/June weather, but please correct me if I’m wrong.
Anyway that’s all from me. I appreciate the time you took to read my post and hopefully enlighten me about your city.
Cheers!

2023.03.29 21:59 Num83rs0 Awkward Personality

Just a quick and weird question, in my province stripping, strip clubs, and everything related is illegal. Recently I had my strip private dance and I was trying to not be awkward about it, but the girls were having fun and laughing as I kept asking them questions what's not allowed or even where I should put my hands cause I had no idea.
Is this kind of newbie awkwardness frustrating for dancers or is it actually enjoyable? Cause I couldn't tell if they were having fun or making fun of me lol.
P.S yes I get awkward and nervous giggles too.
P.P.S Yes i am also a male. :/
