2023.06.06 18:47 tyrone2714 [SOTC] My (affordable) watch collection
| So I've been obsessed with watches ever since my first watch years ago. My collection has grown from 2 to 5 in the past 2 years, which was supposed to be my cap, though I am considering a final, fancier addition to the collection From left to right, casual to formal we have: Invicta Pro Diver: Honestly was really surprised about the quality of this piece compared to the price, which was about half off as it was in a sale. I go to the beach semi-regularly and this is always my go-to, and a replacement for my Gshock that i lost (and barely wore, this I use a lot more) Pagani Design Chronograph: I wasn't to sure if I was going to like chronographs so I got this to test out the style after seeing JOMW's video on it. Personally I don't think this is for me but it's a nice cheap casual watch for jeans and a t shirt after work (plus at 43mm it's pushing my size limit) Casio Lineage: This is my most recent watch that I got half a year ago. The titanium is so comfortable and light which is why this is my daily for work. BWC did a video on it and I'm really glad I went for it Orient Golden Eye: The watch that got me truly obsessed, and was my first mechanical watch. The sunburst is gorgeous and I love seeing the open heart ticking away. That blue really pops in the light and I fall more in love every time I see it Seiko 5: My smallest and dressiest watch in the collection. The dial is gorgeous, and this watch is a great companion for when I'm wearing more formal wear. I'm honestly pretty proud of this collection, I think I have a decent range of styles for every occasion and outfit, all for less than the price of a Tissot Gentleman. I think 5 is also a good number without being over the top. I told that after the Casio that I would stop, but I feel my collection has two issues: 1) I would like something slightly fancier for special occasions. The Orient and Casio are tied for my most expensive pieces, so i would like something that feels slightly more luxurious 2) I wanted a 5 watch collection. I somehow failed to notice the box I ordered has 6 slots. I gaze at my collection in awe each time, and then that empty slot drives me mad. I tried sticking my broken smartwatch in there, then a $1 dollar Chinese watch, but I'd rather have an empty slot than one filled with a watch I don't love. Maybe filling that 6th slot will complete me, maybe I'm delusional and one step away from spiraling down the rabbit hole. What do you guys think? submitted by tyrone2714 to Watches [link] [comments] |
2023.06.06 18:20 Book_Golem Battle Report (Soulblight vs Kharadron)
Well, I've finally played a whole five turn game of Age of Sigmar, with the latest General's Handbook and everything! I want to get into the habit of writing up battle reports, so here goes.
The Armies
My 1000pt list was the following:
Bloodline: Vyrkos
Leaders Wight King on Skeletal Steed (Warlord) ++General (Hunter's Snare)
Necromancer (Warlord) ++Waste Away ++Ulfenkarni Phylactery
Vampire Lord (Warlord) ++Spirit Gale ++Vial of Manticore Venom (bonus from Battalion)
Battleline 20 Skeletons (Galletian Veterans)
10 Skeletons (Galletian Veterans)
10 Grave Guard (Galletian Veterans) ++Greatblades
Other 5 Black Knights (Warlord)
3 Vyrkos Blood-born (Warlord)
Grand Strategy: Empire of Corpses
Total Points: 975
This is the list I used in my last game, with the intent that I don't need to learn any new units this way. I still don't have any Dire Wolves, so that's an aspect of Vyrkos I won't be able to take advantage of.
My opponent was running Kharadron Overlords. As I recall, it was something like this:
Sky-Port: Barak Murder-you-on-the-charge
Leaders Admiral ++Arcane Tome
Aether Khemist ++ Spell in a bottle (Purple Sun)
Aetheric Navigator
Battleline (I assume) 3 Skywardens
3 Skywardens
3 Endrinriggers
Behemoths Frigate ++Cannon ++Flagship
Grand Strategy: Keep the Frigate Alive (and also kill all enemy flying units)
It's sort of the opposite of my list - everything is fast and small units, while mine's slow and large.
Mission and Deployment
The mission ended up being Jaws of Gallet, the one where each round after the first the player going second can nominate an objective to be removed. I set up the table as a ruined city, with quite a lot of small pieces of ruins terrain laid out on a mat covered in cobbled roads. I'd intended for this to be a way to get the terrain out of the box prior to my opponent arriving, but he was happy with the layout (and naturally got to pick territory). Plus it's nice to play on a map that makes cohesive sense!
I deployed somewhat conservatively - the small unit of skeletons hanging back to hold my home objective, Black Knights and the Wight King on the left flank to run up and take the Northwest objective on turn one, the Necromancer and large Skeleton unit on the right flank to push for the Southeast objective, and the Vampire Lord and Blood-born taking the centre. The Grave Guard went into the grave, having been too slow to really help in previous games.
My opponent put his Navigator and Frigate on his back objective (Northeast), and everything else in the boat. I immediately worried about how I was ever going to catch these jerks.
Round 1
My opponent got priority, and gave me the first turn. I immediately advanced on both flanks and up the centre, taking four Objectives and scoring the Cunning Manoeuvre Battle Tactic (for getting my Necromancer onto the Southeast objective, which was in both our territories). Spirit Gale and Mystic Shield both failed to cast, heralding a depressingly familiar start to my spellcasting for the game.
I jumped the Grave Guard out 9" away from my opponent's Navigator, hoping for a long charge to take him out early. Alas, a 7 rerolled into a 7, and they sat around in front of the entire enemy army looking very vulnerable instead.
My opponent got things rolling on his turn, disembarking the Admiral and Khemist and moving them towards the centre objective, taking it from me (as the Admiral counts as 2 models, and either not all of my vampires were quite in range or we miscounted). Meanwhile, the Frigate itself advanced on my Necromancer's contingent, blasting away some of his defensive Skeletons. The Navigator sat on the Northeast point, and started slowing/damaging my units and giving a movement boost to the Frigate like a jerk. Also, the Khemist killed some of my Grave Guard and dropped the Purple Sun on my Blood-born.
The frigate charged my Skeleton Horde (with some of them reassembling in front of it), and both units of Skywardens piled out. Here I made another mistake, forgetting that the Necromancer can offload wounds onto nearby Summonable units, and one unit of Skywardens decided that they weren't having any of that 5+ Ward nonsense and murdered him. Ah well, he wasn't much of a minion anyway. The Skeletons held out though, and put a wound on each of the Skywarden units.
Round 2
My opponent won priority and decided to go for the double turn. Oof.
The Navigator chipped a few more wounds off the Blood-born and the Grave Guard, the Khemist likewise fumigating my wights. The Frigate remained in combat, though one unit of Skywardens peeled off to deal with my backline Skeleton unit. The Admiral charged my Blood-born, killing them outright but straying into pile-in territory of my Vampire Lord, who proceeded to beat him around the head with a mace for a little bit. The Skeleton Horde remained "strong", recovering plenty of models in the combat phase and then being reduced to a single unit champion remaining. This could have gone a lot worse. (Good thing that conniving Necromancer was dead, I might have lost the Skeletons if he'd been offloading wounds onto them!)
On my turn, I removed the objective my opponent's Navigator was sitting on. That'll tech him! I also used the Genera's Handbook Heroic Action Strike At The Opening to fight in the Hero Phase with my Vampire Lord, dealing a little more damage to the enemy Admiral. That guy is very durable! More skeletons regenerated, though tragically my Grave Guard weren't close enough to my Vampire Lord to recover any models. I also managed to actually cast Spirit Gale this time, chipping wounds off every enemy and slaying one Skywarden from each unit thanks to previous damage.
My cavalry swept in from the left, taking back the centre control point and giving me more lovely victory points. I had the Wight King hang back an inch or two to continue contesting the Northwest objective too. In the combat phase, many Skeletons reassembled, and my Vampire Lord weathered a beating but finally finished off the Admiral (immediately recovering damage taken thanks to The Hunger), scoring me The Choicest Vintage. Also, the sole surviving Grave Guard charged the Khemist, though failed to do anything of note.
Round 3
I won priority. Time for a counter double turn!
This turn I forgot to pick a Battle Tactic. My opponent was kind enough to let me pick one randomly when I remembered at the start of the combat phase, but there was no chance of completing This One's Mine by then.
A few key things happened this turn. First, I was reminded that Objectives in Age of Sigmar are sticky, and you don't have to leave units on them. Second, my opponent removed my backline (Southwest) objective, freeing up my Skeletons to move even if it wasn't sticky. Thirdly, my opponent got fed up of the Purple Sun and dispelled it - it was sitting in the centre of the board and making it risky for him to move his troops nearby, while I was basically ignoring it. (I failed to cast anything so his Navigator had a dispel left.)
I began moving my Skeletons towards the centre, while the Skeleton Horde continued to regenerate itself (and also move to retake the Southeast objective, now that it had enough models again). My Black Knights continued to sweep eastward, flattening the Khemist with 7 Mortal Wounds on the charge, and my Vampire Lord charged back South to deal with the separated unit of Skywardens, wiping them out in a single round.
My opponent Flew High with the Frigate, transporting the remaining unit of Skywardens and the Endrinriggers close to the Northwest objective. His Navigator slowed my cavalry contingent to a crawl, and plinked the last Wound off the Grave Guard in the Hero phase - I responded by immediately re-summoning them at the end of the Movement phase to contest the Northwest objective (and to distract from everything shooting my Wight King).
The Grave Guard ate a lot of fire, though not enough to save the mounted Wight King from taking enough fire to kill him too. That hurt, I needed units that can actually do damage. There wasn't much (or any?) combat this turn, just a lot of my important units getting shot. Ouch.
Round 4
I won priority, and so we didn't have a double turn this time!
On the other hand, my opponent removed the Southeast objective, leaving my Skeleton Horde hanging around a big hole in the ground rather than delicious loot. This turn, with thin pickings for Battle Tactics, I chose Endless Nightmare - unfortunately, my big unit of Skeletons was up to 14 models by this point; I'd need to revive four in the Hero Phase and then pass the 25% chance to reassemble the other two in the Combat Phase.
I pushed my forces towards the centre of the battlefield, my Vampire Lord flying 11" to catch up with the two units of skeletons, and my Wight King popping back out of the grave to get even more control on the central point. The Black Knights attempted a long charge at the Frigate, hoping to wipe out one of the units inside with a good set of Mortals, but even with a reroll they couldn't make it in. To make matters worse, I only revived one Skeleton in the combat phase, failing my Battle Tactic. All in all, I scored only a single point this turn, and things started to look grim.
In my opponent's turn, he chipped wounds off my cavalry with the Navigator again, shot the Black Knights off the table, and disembarked the Skywardens to take the central Objective. There was also a bunch of shooting at my Wight King, but in cover and with Finest Hour up he weathered the storm this time.
Round 5
My opponent won priority again, leading to the most double turns I've seen in a single game of AoS. I also completely forgot to remove an objective this round, leading to extra points scored for my opponent - whoops.
The Skywardens went Northwest to contest that objective against emerging Black Knights - my opponent had to choose between running (and preventing my Knights from taking the objective from him if they emerged on his turn by contesting it) or not running (and hoping that their ranged weapons would be enough to sweep the Knights if they showed up this turn). He chose not to run, resulting in only a single Skywarden being within 6" of the Objective. As it was, the Black Knights did not emerge this turn (I rolled for it though, which was probably a mistake).
The Frigate and the Endrinriggers then charged Wight King and both units of Skeletons. With everything together, (and a series of unlucky saves) the Wight King died again, leaving my opponent in control of both objectives. It was going to come down to the Vampire Lord to save the day.
On my turn I selected Eye for an Eye as the only Battle Tactic I really had a hope of completing. I needed to kill either the Frigate (unlikely, but wins me the game at this point) or the Endrinriggers (much more likely, but I wasn't sure it'd be enough), while also getting enough skeletons onto the central point to take it and getting my Black Knights back to take the Northwest objective. Yikes.
I started strong by casting Grinding Teeth of Gallet on the central Objective, catching the Frigate, Endrinriggers, and my Skeletons (oh no, not the skeletons). And then I flubbed all the rolls, resulting in no Mortal Wounds to anybody. Total effective spells cast this game: 1.
Next up, I moved the Vampire Lord into position for a 3" charge into the Frigate and successfully brought back the Black Knights! That's the Northwest Objective taken care of, along with my Grand Strategy.
Finally, the combat phase. The Vampire Lord made his charge, and immediately rolled five misses for his attacks. Oof. So much for taking out the Frigate. Due to poor positioning on my part, both units of skeletons had to split attacks between the Frigate and the Endrinriggers, though the Horde did manage to pile in close enough to the objective to take that for me too. It came down to the wire, but with Crimson Feast and All Out Attack active, the Horde also managed to kill off the last two Endrinriggers, scoring my last grasp of points!
Final result: 22 - 22, Draw
Phew!
I definitely made mistakes this game, but so did my opponent. I'm happy with the result - there were a lot of things that happened that could have swung it one way or the other, and in the end a draw honestly feels like a hard-fought victory!
Learning points
Battle Tactics are a really fiddly part of the game. I don't even have the six Vampire ones memorised, never mind the eight other options! That's definitely going to be a sticking point for me learning this game properly.
I really like the Vampire Lord, though I can definitely see why people like taking Legion of Blood for them - extra casting ability and more attacks would both have been very useful in this game. They're also not quite as damaging in combat as I keep thinking they are, which is something I'll have to keep in mind.
On the topic of casting: oof. One successful spell over the course of the game is not what I'd been hoping to see. Granted, some of those were dispelled by the Navigator, but I think I missed casting well over half of them in the first place - and losing the Necromancer early on didn't help with that. I feel like I'd like to be the magically dominant faction in most matchups (outside Tzeentch or Lizardmen), so more wizards might be the way to go. Or at least the Arcane Tome on the Wight King.
Vyrkos really didn't do much for me this game, though what it did do may have kept me in it. The 5+ Ward on the Skeleton Horde helped out on turn one, when the most damage was incoming; while the Wight King counting as seven models forced my opponent to make some riskier plays to take the central objective from me. I never managed to chain activate heroes and units, and as mentioned earlier I don't have the models for summoned wolves yet. I think I'll try out Legion of Blood next time for better Vampires.
I almost completely wasted the Grave Guard this game. A unit of ten Skeletons would have done better in their position. I think I need to keep them in the grave a little longer - if I'd brought them out a turn later they could have easily deleted the Navigator for me. (They were still useful for taking fire, but I'd rather not spend 140pts to do that when 85 would suffice!)
Kharadron Overlords are frustrating to fight against, but also Skeletons seem to be a great counter to them - coming back in the Combat phase means you can regenerate a lot of the damage that they do with shooting.
The Navigator is an incredible utility piece too - moving ships, dealing Mortal Wounds, and most annoyingly halving the speed of my units to stop them getting where I needed them to go. I know it's only based on rolls of one and six, but with a reroll each turn (from a command, I think? Or possibly an artefact.) he was able to get both effects off every round damaging multiple units.
The Frigate was cool, if infuriating. My opponent attempted to drop bombs with it in the movement phase exactly once, and came to the same conclusion I did about moving across enemy units: it's basically impossible. Doubtless there's some professional strategy for doing it consistently, but it looks to me like you'd have to start 3" away and fly over no more than 1" of model to get the frigate to fly over a unit given its base size.
We completed the game in somewhere over three hours. Not bad given that I'm still learning all the rules, but definitely something to work on.
Anyway, thanks for reading, and I hope this was enjoyable. I'm always open to advice - I know I've got a lot to learn about how the army works!
Next step: paint all the skeletons!

2023.06.06 18:18 CHEEZYSPAM I've been listening to the new album over the weekend on repeat, here are my unsolicited thoughts. Has your opinion changed?
"Life is but a Dream..." seems like a drastic departure from what we've heard from A7X in the past, but I would say this is a companion piece to The Stage (especially with tracks like COSMIC and Beautiful Morning). So if you didn't love The Stage and the direction they took in their last album, I can see how people wouldn't love, or downright hate this one.
I'm a big A7X fan since Waking the Fallen was released 20 years ago (damn where has the time gone!?) So to expect that the band is going to sound the same after all that time is unrealistic. They have matured both in age and musically.
They lost (IMO) the 'soul' of the band when Jimmy died and have been struggling to find their purpose ever since... The band's library could easily be separated in the category of "before Nightmare and post Nightmare".
Side note: Their white (self titled) album is my favorite to date, while Hail to the King is my least favorite/least memorable album.
Speaking of The Rev... I was surprised to read the notes that the band used contributions from him! I'm interested to know what specifically was written by him. Lyrics, themes, drums, etc.?
I feel like they're on some acid trip since The Stage, that's not a bad thing, it's just different than what we know of them. I'll openly admit when I first heard "Nobody" on the radio, I wasn't initially all that impressed.
However, I have listened to LibaD all weekend and on the 2nd listen, I was hooked. I love the weirdness of some of the songs on here. From the System of a Down inspired Game Over to the driving beats on We Love You "More power, more pace, more money, more taste...more more more", it's so much fun. Cosmic and (O)rdinary sounds like beautiful leftovers from the Stage and I like thematic connection it has between the 2 albums. (D)eath is amazing... I don't know how else to put into words how much I love this song and how Shadows sings it all Sinatra crooning style. It sorta feels like they were in a NIGHTMARE and are slowly waking up and feeling their way through the fog.
In the end, I have no doubt this will be a love it or hate it entry. I feel like they definitely needed to express themselves creatively, but time will tell if they've gotten it out of their system? Will they continue the trend? Or go back to a heavier sound on the next album (which would be my guess). Love the band, love Life is but a Dream... I hope you do too or that you'll discover and learn to appreciate it over time.
What are your thoughts?

2023.06.06 18:14 Lord_Guyis Season 2 Episode 22 Anime and Manga Differences
Alright, here are the differences and comparisons between the anime and manga for season 2 episode 22. Standard disclaimers: 1. this is pretty much spoiler-free, I will only talk about the portion of content from the manga that was covered in the episode. 2. a difference one way or the other is not inherently a good or bad thing. I'll probably dislike the anime's changes, but those are my judgements, you have yours. 3. I am comparing the official english versions of the material that I have easily available to me, as such I'm comparing 2 different translations, I'm aware the two JP versions almost certainly have identical wording in most parts (and that Netflix is just using the manga lines, for the most part). With that said, let us begin.
This episode covers all of chapter 96 (including the cover page), all of 97 (though the order of it is mixed around), and the cover page for 98. Totaling 58 pages.
- Anime cut a quick reaction from Drott when the men yell at him to just finish Thorfinn off: "Shut up! Quit talking!"
- Cut bit from Drott thinking about how Thorfinn feels weird to hit: "...must be because he's so light..."
- Anime: "He's twisting his neck and hips just before Drott's fists hit him, thereby dispersing the impact away from the core of his body." Manga: "Just before the fist lands, he twists his neck or back to deflect the damage toward his center." So anime says its going away from his center, manga says its toward his center. Surely just a translation thing.
- Anime cut out a bit of a match cut when Einar remembers Thorfinn talking about finding the first resort. Going from Thorfinn's bleeding face back to his healthy face back in that scene when Thorfinn actually said that. Second one of these that the anime has cut (first was back at Canute talking with Harald/Sweyn's head)
- Tiny thing, in the anime Snake gets off his horse on the left side, where in the manga he gets off on the right side.
- Anime cut out a shot of Thorfinn noticing and looking over at Snake when he arrives, and Thorfinn then tripping which leads to him getting hit solidly by Drott. Second time the anime has cut out Thorfinn tripping in a fight (this was also cut/changed in the Snake fight).
- Anime: "You idiot. You're unbelievably softhearted. If talking could've resolved this, we'd have done that already." Manga: "You fucking idiot... You never even asked us... If we could settle this with dialogue, I'd have done it ages ago. I almost can't believe what a soft-hearted fool you are..."
- Anime: "Are you sure about that?" Manga: "Would you really?"
- Anime added a couple shots of the crowd reacting to Thorfinn yelling at Drott.
- Anime added a shot of Einar gripping Snake's arm tighter and a shot of Snake reacting to that.
- Another tiny thing, in the anime we hear Thorfinn getting hit 3 times over scenery/crowd shots before we fully cut back in and Drott hits him the 98th time. In the manga, there are the sounds of 6 hits over these shots.
- In the anime, Olmar is standing between Snake and Einar when we see him after the 98th hit. In the manga he's elsewhere in the crowd
- The quick shot going over the crowd after the 100th hit is fully mirrored from the manga, even flipping details like a man's forehead scar.
- Anime added Olmar into the shot following that^ one that goes over Einar and Snake because as stated earlier, he's now in between them in the anime where he wasn't in the manga.
- Anime cut out a shot showing Thorfinn wobble on his feet a little after the 100th hit.
- Anime: "I can't hit someone when I'm trying to negotiate for peace." Manga: "Who negotiates for peace by beating a man?" LOVE the manga translation here, always loved this line so I'm not huge on the anime version, though I know it's saying the same thing. Just a bit less impact, for me.
- Not a difference between the anime and manga, but note that the anime actually says hnefatafl now. Season 1 had Askeladd say shogi (both out loud and in the subtitles) where the manga said hnefatafl (even the JP version of the manga has furigana saying to pronounce "shogi" as "hnefatafl" in both scenes). First they actually start saying "Thing" this season and now we got "hnefatafl". Good job, season 2.
- Anime added the visual of the original Thors-Thorfinn "you have no enemies" scene. Manga just trusts that we'll remember one of the most important scenes in the series and I appreciate that. Hell, we got it retold to us just earlier this season, didn't need the reminder.
- Anime: "I don't have any enemies." Manga: "I have no enemies." I've also seen that netflix's version says "Nobody is my enemy." And yeah, I prefer the manga version.
- Anime added a quick shot of Olmar reacting to that^ line.
- Anime cut a small panel of Snake and Olmar reacting to the warriors making way for Thorfinn, Snake going "Whoa..."
- Anime: "We're going to see the man who starts wars. Don't you have things you want to say to him, too?" Manga: "We're going to meet the man who started this war. You've got some things to say to him, I expect."
- Anime: "You bet I do. A whole mountain of them." Manga: "I'll give him a piece of my mind! Several pieces!!" I have always felt this line in the manga was a little silly.
- In the manga, when Thorfinn and Einar walk towards the meeting with Canute, Thorfinn is holding his shoulder. The anime just has him walking with both arms at this sides.
- From here we've entered chapter 97. As I stated up above, the anime has shifted around a lot of the lines in the conversation. It would take too long for me to try and detail every little shift the anime has done here so for simplicity's sake, I'm just noting that all here in this one point and I'll be going in the order of the anime here from here on.
- Anime: "Pater..." "Don't look. If you find Pater among the dead, you won't be able to remain calm." Manga: "What if...amid those bodies...lies Pater...?" "Don't look. If we find Pater there now...we will hate Canute."
- Anime added the flashes of Thorfinn's POV from cutting Canute and seeing Askeladd's body back at the end of the Prologue.
- Cut exchange between Canute and Wulf as Thorfinn and Einar approach: "He does not seem to be armed." "No, but he is no ordinary man. Be careful of him."
- In the shot showing the two's eyes, in the manga the focus of the Canute shot is the scar on his cheek, which is not shown at all in the anime shot. I guess those flashes of Thorfinn cutting him were supposed to cover for that?
- Anime-original line for Canute: "No...for what happened to Askeladd."
- Anime: "I'm sorry about the scar on your face." Manga: "...Please forgive me...for your scar. I was possessed at the time."
- Cut line from Einar after hearing Thorfinn attacked the king: "...Ha Ha! You're one hell of a man, my brother!"
- Anime: "You've come to say some commendable things." Manga: "And you've become much more eloquent since we last met."
- Anime added the flash of Askeladd killing Sweyn. YES anime, I REMEMBER
- Cut line from Thorfinn after Canute notes that four years is enough time to change a man: "You've changed, too. You have the face of a man in power."
- Cut line from Canute that was in response to that^ line: "Hah... You sound just like Askeladd." So the anime and manga have there own different mentions of Askeladd.
- In the manga, when Canute explains how Ketil's family "started this", the visuals are a collage of panels from when that happened. The anime just has imposing shots of Canute.
- Anime: "Ketil's son Olmar killed ten of my men because I wouldn't make him one of my thegns." Manga: "Olmar, son of Ketil, displayed his incompetence, and then was angered when I did not make him my thegn...in the end, he slew ten of my men."
- Cut lines from Einar to Canute: "Olmar is a coward. He could not possibly kill a man. You set this all up, didn't you?"
- Cut lines from the vikings in the crowd and Wulf: "...Do you hear the shit he's spouting...?" "Stop. His majesty does not deny it."
- Cut line from Einar to Canute: "I bet you've never held a hoe in your life."
- Anime added the visual of the tilled field while Einar's talking, which is the same visual Einar sees back in episode 1 when Ketil asks if he'd like to come work on his farm.
- One more cut line from Einar to Canute: "Well? What do you have to say for yourself? Boss of the vikings!"
- In the manga, when Thorfinn mentions what Canute said back in Gainsborough he fully quotes Canute's lines, whereas in the anime Thorfinn more just summarizes what Canute said.
- Anime: "Do you still believe that?" Manga: "Do you still think that way? Do you still want to build a paradise?"
- Anime: "The commander who leads a thousand ships and ten thousand men." Manga: "I command a thousand ships, a million men."
- Anime cut some quick reaction shots of Thorfinn and Einar as well as the vikings and Wulf right after Canute commands the waves to stop.
- Anime cut a tiny bit from Canute's lines talking about his power: "Yes, it is meager."
- More cut lines from Canute: "Because beings who have forsaken love...are ordained to suffer."
- Anime: "But that is what humans are. Commiting sins as we wander lost is precisely what humans do." Manga: "Yet this is what makes us human. To sin and lose one's way-that is the human condition."
- Difference of visuals on these^ lines, in the anime it's an old viking tapestry, whereas in the manga it's a panel of men fighting that is drawn in pencil making the visuals strikingly different from the pen and ink drawings around it.
- Cut bits from Canute's lines: "I am the emperor of the vikings. And I defy the rules of God."
- Anime: "I'm gonna knock this guy on his ass." Manga: "I ought to knock you off your feet!"
- Anime: "Building a paradise, my ass!" Manga: "The idea that this will create a paradise is laughable!!"
- Anime added a quick shot of Thorfinn looking at Einar after he yells at Canute.
- Anime added a shot of Einar growling some more after Thorfinn stops him.
And that ends this one. Quite a solid episode though I, of course, have my gripes. Not a big fan of all the flashes of past events, like I said, I remember, and I appreciate the manga just trusting me to do so. Before you argue that it's been so long since season 1, it had been a similar amount of time (if not longer) between the chapters coming out in the manga. 40+ chapters between the end of the prologue and these chapters, at the least that's right around 4 years (and again the "you have no enemies" was already brought back up earlier THIS season). Aside from that I also really don't care for the art style of whatever animator was in charge of the big scene with Canute and then Einar yelling at him. They are clearly very skilled, but it just looks really ugly to me. Otherwise I did feel that all the important moments did land as they should have, so it was overall very solid.

2023.06.06 17:44 batikwitch22 I'm so fucking sick of this economy
Vent
Before I start I want to say that I have a reliable, stable roof over my head. We were able to afford a Costco run the other weekend so there's meat in the freezer. We're not going to go homeless or starve. My husband has a reliable job that works 50 hours a week so he gets 10 hours of overtime every Friday. He gets paid $23/hour. I'm not asking for help, just venting.
I'm a massage therapist. I've been doing this for about 10 years. I had a fantastic clientele at the spa that I worked at. I was so sick of working for somebody else, though. There's always drama and my boss started doing shady shit with our taxes and commisions. At the much encouragement of my clients, family, and friends, I opened up my own practice this past February. It has not gone as planned. Everything was so great until summer. Nobody has money anymore.
I have no money. I poured my small savings into my business. I didn't even go all out. I thrifted or curb shopped (free!) a lot of it. My husband pays the monthly bills while I pay the groceries, gas, the sitter, and anything else our 4 year old might need. I've been living off of my credit card. Husband has started covering groceries and my usual areas too. Grocery runs used to be less than $50 a week, now it's $100 a week for the same items. We do our best to be frugal. We don't eat steak and lobster. I buy meat from the almost expired discount section. I don't buy berries anymore because they're too expensive. Bananas are cheap. I lied on the self checkout at how many avocados I had because my son is going through a phase and it's all he wants. I eat one piece of toast with one egg, half an avocado, and homemade cream cheese (that got too expensive, so did butter). Now milk prices are going up again. At least I found some free seeds so we've started a vegetable garden. The rabbits ate the first couple shoots though. Fencing, even secondhand, is expensive for me right now.
I can't sleep because my bedroom is so hot. We have air conditioning but I put my son in the coldest room and I'm in the warmest, husband is in the middle warm room. My room is south facing and that side of the house is never shaded. I found $20 on the ground this morning in the parking lot. I cried because I could go get a box fan so I can maybe sleep. I had to buy one for my grandma last year and I remembered it being $10-15. I got to the aisle and cried again because it was $23.
My son needs cotton pajama shorts. He's getting terrible heat rash and ezcema in the summer. The awful quality store bought polyester pajamas do not help. Why do the girls sections have cotton clothing but not boys??? I'm a very good seamstress. I looked for a shorts pattern and cried again because the patterns used to be $2 and now they're $9. I can't do that. I've not been the best, historically, at making my own patterns. I know the theory so I'll just have to try again. Let's hope I don't mess up with the $5 cotton thrifted sheet too much. I literally don't have the money to buy another one. Most of the sheets nowadays are polyester anyway.
I market myself, I swear I'm doing what every person suggests to grow my practice. Summer is usually slower for massage. Everybody is taking vacations. It's just so incredibly frustrating to have boomer clients that are just so out of touch. My younger clients that can actually afford massage are the ones supporting me right now, as little as it is. My prices for my business are right with what the average massage costs ($90 for a 60 min). I can't raise them anymore.
I'm sorry, I'm not asking for help. I've got a roof over my head and food in the freezer. This is just so overwhelming. I'm going to look for a second job. Even though it'll take time from my son I just don't have an option right now. I have to make more money. Every time I go to the store it's more expensive. Heavin forbid student loan payments start again. Or my 200,000 mile Honda breaks down for good. I just had to spend $400 to fix it last weekend. Out of savings, again. My mechanic says it should be ok but I'll definitely need tires for winter. He's a friend and could tell I'm stressed about it all. He hugged me when I left and said he'll always do his best to take care of our vehicles. He's got his own busy household too, though.
I'm just...tired. Worried. Scared. I just can't believe how expensive everything has gotten. Even thrift stores and marketplace is more expensive.
Oh and my feet grew a whole size so none of my shoes fit anymore. I've got weird feet and birkenstocks are my go to. The sandals that I've had for 5+ years now give me blisters. All my shoes do now. Good luck finding decent shoes at size 11 at a thrift store.
I'm tough, we're tough. It's ok to have dry seasons because then you get creative. Someday this will all be a memory. We're gonna be ok but right now I'm so fucking sick of all this.

2023.06.06 17:40 Phallus_Maximus69E Hitman: Contracts - The Dark Hitman
Recommended.
Hitman: Contracts can be summed as "The Dark Hitman". The ambience of this game is oppressive, with dark environments and terrifying music. This is presented with improved mechanics and a better game flow. Contracts is not as epic as the last one but it has an identity of its own, shuffling from slow, dark moments, to action pieces.
This game was rushed and it shows, with an underdeveloped training section and weapons cache, weird graphics and glitched animations (especially the fiber wire ones). The game was also too short so Codename 47 missions were remade (not necessarily surpassing the originals). Contracts is noticiably easier than Hitman 2: Silent Assassin, as gameplay is more consistent, but the fun in this game is to try the many different approaches to missions.
The game starts with 47 dragging himself from a hit gone wrong, wounded by a gunshot. He falls on the floor and keeps fading in and out of conscience throughout the game, with actions taking him back to some of his previous missions; starting with the Asylum in Romania. You start from Dr. Ortmeyer's office and go through a place turned upside down, with patients running around, falling from ledges or dead on the ground - riddled with bullets - and SWAT teams running around looking for you. This game was heavily inspired by the classic "Léon: The Professional" and, because of this, SWAT teams are very present with 47 having many opportunities to slip past dressed as a SWAT commando. In one occasion you even take part in a SWAT assault in Rotterdam - which is very cool.
The sneak mode was fixed, with a more appropriate moving speed enabling the player to approach the enemy from behind. Enemy AI was improved, thus reducing random violence towards the player to the point of it being just an occasional nuisance rather than a constant source of frustration as in the previous game. Agent 47 can now run once in a while without being attacked and even 47's walking pace has been sped up, thus making gameplay more dynamic. The suspicion meter stopped being a slot-machine and is now actually useful.
The sniper rifle case was re-introduced (Thanks God!) stopping those awful missions were you had to slip by with a gigantic sniper rifle amid civilians in random paths. The Walther WA2000 Sniper has now a silencer and can be used with much more convenience.
The game introduces the options of poisoning (both lethal and non-lethal) that became a trending pattern in the series. Another refinament is the circular inventory system, that is really helpful. The system for replaying the missions is pretty bad, however.
Balcony jumps make a return and are used all the time. Changes in remade missions are made because "47 remembers them differently", like the balcony next to Frantz Fuchs room being on the opposite side, but like with nanomachines, this is also used as an excuse for lazyness and oversights.
Graphics took a dive and character models look more square and are noticeably uglier than in previous installments. The Rotterdam strippers are the worst examples, coupled with an awful voice that is far inferior to the original - Sandy deserved better. The guns are really weird, painted in silver and looking like toys.
Lei Ling, remembered as Mei Ling (a nod to the Metal Gear series), is now reimagined as a younger woman, with a teenage voice - not my cup of tea - but is more responsive in-game, keeping up with you instead of presenting those boring escorting tasks. The bartender doesn't want to speak with you because 47 is feeling stomach pain due to his bullet wound, but this surely impoverishes the game's dialog as devs were cutting corners. They even forgot to translate Lee Hong and Tzun/Zhun in the restaurant -
and 47 never says he needs to use the bathroom! The cinematics blend in the chaotic police build-up around 47 with transitions to the different mission settings. The soundtrack is dark with great immersion. In one mission you go deep into a dominatrix party in Romania, with people dressed in leather partying amid a butchery. Maps are also big and you can get lost. One of the most iconic missions in this game is The Beldingford Manor, where you have two separated buildings, the stable and the manor (which has lots of secret passages). Not only that, being tasked to rescue the son of a millionaire following the plot of Richard Connell's The Most Dangerous Game, you have to do it with a dark, gloomy soundtrack, presenting some phantasmagoric laughter in the back.
Every Hitman has "THAT" mission, which is the Bjarkhov Bomb (aka "The obligatory Russian mission") in Contracts; that while impressive, with snow falling and multiple NPCs walking around in different outfits (including hazmat suits), is too big for its own good and has some annoying tweaks like the first target having to be poisoned in order to be garroted in the bathroom; but if you mistime it, he sits there for an outrageous long time, forcing you to restart - why not simply use regular poison? Another problem is the distance from the submarine to the plane, which can cause an alarm (which can cause two alarms in one because of course it did...). Bjarkhov also suffers from incredibly lazy writing, with the first target being one of the Fuchs brothers for no reason at all. The flag of Chechnya appears in evidence in the mission, so why not make the arms dealer a Chechen or any other sympathizer for that matter?
The game is short, with half its missions being remakes. The Colombian missions weren't remade, since players hated them so much. This was a wasted opportunity, since all missions are remembered at night and under constant raining. A jungle infiltration under the cover of darkness and rain would really fit in here.
There are some interesting easter eggs and nods to the player, like the opium pipe in the Meat King's party having Lee Hong's Red Dragon triad symbol. The haunted part of the Budapest hotel, or the hidden stuff in Hong Kong; but the best one is Dr. Ortmeyer's card in Lee Hong's office.
Aside from technical problems, the veteran player will mostly just ace every mission and beat the game in one day (like I did), but it is fun to keep testing the new ways Contracts presents. The final mission, Hunter and Hunted, does not deliver the promised showdown the cinematic was hinting at but the ending sure pumped me up for the development of the story. I really wanted to run to the tv and watch The Professional again!

2023.06.06 17:26 Outside_Ad_9691 Beating the Wither early game? Easier than you think!
Suppose you want to fight the Wither. But it's early game and you don't have good enough weapons/armor yet. Well, despite what you think, this isn't as big of a problem as you think. You can beat the Wither with no armor (with no real risk to your health) and a Wooden Sword or some other weak weapon. This sounds impossible...but not if you make a Fikitrap.
But what IS a Fikitrap, anyway? Well, it's a term I came up with. It's a way to trap the Wither so that it stays in one place. Fikibreaker is a guy that plays Modded Minecraft. I got the idea for this trap by watching one of his videos on YouTube, so I named the trap after him.
Anyway, here's how to do all this:
- You might want to to pack some food. Not too much; 2-5 loaves of Bread or something similar should be enough. This is in case the Wither stings you a bit (which may not happen often) and takes away a small amount of health.
- Make some weapons. Doesn't matter what you make - you can make a Stone Sword or even a Wooden Sword. Heck, you can even use your bare fists if you want. Though, I'd recommend making a weapon with Looting on it, and try to make it all the way to Looting III. Why? In Minecraft, certain enemies can drop rare but very valuable items (like Wither Skeletons and Wither Skulls). And in Modded Minecraft, those rare items can be very powerful. This goes for bosses, too, like the Wither; since bosses are tougher enemies, any rare items they may drop may be extra powerful. Depending on what modpack you're playing, slaying the Wither with a high Looting level can net you items such an Infinity Booster Card (an AE2 addon item) or even a second Nether Star (I don't know if that's a thing; I don't remember getting a second Nether Star in any packs I've played, but that could be a thing in some modpacks). The easier way to get Looting III (at least, to me) is to make a weapon with Luck III using Tinkers Construct, which is a part of lots of modpacks (I'm referring to Tinkers Construct 2. With Tinkers Construct 3, getting the max level of Luck is significantly harder; in TiCon 2, you just need 360 Lapis, but in TiCon 3, you need a Name Tag and a Rabbit's Foot, among other things. I'm not familiar with Tinkers Construct 1's mechanics, as I don't think I've interacted with it enough). Luck is a trait Tinkers weapons/tools have that acts like Looting on enemies and Fortune on blocks/ores. Anyway, if your Looting III/Luck III has low durability, use another weapon instead to take away most of the Wither's HP; use your Looting weapon for the killing blow.
- This part is the most important part. Get 11 Witherproof blocks. It doesn't matter which kind. In most modpacks I've played, making Witherproof blocks is not really that hard. Some include Reinforced Obsidian from Tiny Progressions or Tinted Glass from Mob Grinding Utils (not to be confused with vanilla Minecraft Tinted Glass, which I don't think is Witherproof).
- Build the Fikitrap. If you don't know how to build it, go to this link. Fikibreaker did a playthrough of Stoneblock (the first Stoneblock. He played Stoneblock 2 too, but that's not what I'm talking about). This link refers to Episode 13 of his playthrough. At about 4:30, he places down the trap. It's obvious how he builds it from the video, but I' going to describe it anyway (in case the link doesn't work for some reason): Step 1) Find a place not near your base. You don't have to go that far; just find a place far enough away so that the Wither's initial explosion doesn't destroy any of your base. You also don't want any passive mobs around within line-of-sight of the Wither (like Villagers you want to trade with or farm animals) because he may target them as well as you. Step 2) Place down 1 Witherproof Block. Let's call this the Base Block. Step 3) Build a 3x3 platform above the first block. Make sure there's a 2-block space between this platform (no more, no less). Let's call this the Middle Platform. Step 4) Place the final block directly above the center of the Middle Platform. Let's call this the Top Block. Make sure there's a 1-block space between the Middle Platform and the Top Block. And that's it! Build complete!
- Build the Wither so it get stuck in the trap. To do so, build the Wither sideways (this is also demonstrated in the video, by the way). Build it so that the Wither's tail rests on top of the Base Block. But if you want Wither Roses, before you even build the Wither, you can place weakened animals/other mobs near the Fikitrap. Be sure to lower their health to about a heart or half a heart so that they'll die in the forthcoming explosion. You can build a box around the Fikitrap so the animals won't run away.
- As soon as the Wither forms, run away out of the blast radius. If you did everything correctly, the Wither's heads should be stuck in the Top Block, its body stuck in the Middle Platform, and its tail stuck in the Base Block. It should not be able to move from that spot. It should only be able to turn around and look in different directions; that's the only amount of movement it should be able to do.
- You could craft armor, but it's a waste of time. The Fikitrap should keep you relatively safe. Even Leather Armor is overdoing it.
- Immediately after the explosion, just go and beat up the Wither. Make sure your health is full, first. Collect any Wither Roses that may be around. Normally, you'd want to inflict heavy damage on the Wither to beat him as soon as possible before he kills you, therefore you'd want to use a strong weapon like a Diamond/Netherite Sword/Axe. But in this situation, it doesn't matter, as the Wither is unlikely to be able to hurt you much (if at all), so you can just whack away with you Stone Sword/bare fists/what have you (and this is early game, so a Diamond/Netherite weapon is out of the question anyway, because it's too expensive or impossible. You don't have to rush; take your time. Well, actually, you may want to rush just a little bit because the Wither does damage to himself by doing damage with the flying head attack it likes to use, which can't travel outwards to hit anybody and hits himself instead; if he kills himself before you hit him with you Looting/Luck weapon, that'd be disappointing. Well actually, with Modded Minecraft, getting such a weapon early might be possible, depending on your mods/modpack). Make sure your Looting III/Luck III weapon deals the finishing blow.
- When fighting the Wither when he's stuck in the Fikitrap, you should be relatively safe. The only ways you would take damage is if a) you stand too close and take AOE damage or b) he hits you from a lucky angle with his flying heads. In that case, those few pieces of Bread should be enough to heal you up.
- Take your Nether Stars and anything else the Wither may have dropped. If you have Project E, then you can dupe the Nether Star and may not have to fight the Wither again! You should see if any of the other rare items it may have dropped have EMC value as well. If you have Mystical Agriculture, you may want to invest in crafting Nether Star Seeds and a Nether Star Crux needed for the seeds to be able to grow; for this, you need, at most, 6-8 Nether Stars. Actually, the Crux needs Insanium Essence to craft; you can get that by fighting the Wither a bunch more times to get lots of Supremium Essence to craft into Insanium Essence. Or you can dupe Tier 5/6 Inferium Seeds in your garden and put the extra seeds into Cyclic's Uncrafting Grinder.
- For aesthetic reasons, you may want to patch up the hole that the Wither's explosion left behind. Surprisingly, though, you'll find that the Wither has done a lot less environmental damage that what he's usually capable of in normal situations.
And that's it! With the Fikitrap, that's all it takes to beat the Wither early game. I hope you liked my latest guide and that it is useful to you!

2023.06.06 17:26 ChemistCapy Konstantinos Mavropanos analysis and discussion
| NOTE: This is a continuation of a scouting series I'm doing, where I highlight players who could fit well at villa. Thank you everyone who commented on the last one. I really enjoy making these so I appreciate both your kind words and your criticism, which I hope you'll see I have taken to heart to improve this analysis. Just to be, as some people complained, there is currently NO transfer link/rumor between Aston Villa and Konstantinos Mavropanos, he is simply a player I like and think we should consider. The departure of Ashley Young has left quite a few villa fans speculating that the club will be after a new right back. In Emery's style of play during possession the right back tucks in, effectively playing as a center back in a back three which can be a challenging role to play. Although Matty Cash has been very good when he has played/been fit, the fact that a 37 year old Ashley Young kept him out of the side, combined with his increasingly worrying injury record means he is a player which the club might try to improve on. Which either means he gets sold or moved to the bench (I'm not sure and truthfully I wouldn't mind either option). That begs the question, “who is the right player to play that RB role?”. One option would be to play Konsa there. Konsa has shown in spells he can play this position well and this has the benefit of letting Villa play Diego Carlos alongside this season's incredibly successful partnership of Konsa and Mings. This isn't a bad solution at all however in my eyes there are two issues with it, firstly, we cannot be certain about the impact of playing Konsa as a right back on the existing partnership. Any changes to the tactical setup (such as shifting him to RB) might have consequences for the effectiveness of Mings and Konsa as a defensive duo. To me it seems risky if not illogical to alter the setup that has enabled them to succeed so far. Secondly we’ve only seen Konsa play in this new position a few times for a short period of time. Although I don't doubt his abilities, over a whole season he might not be as good as we think now. Instead I think we should look at a player who has really caught my eye and whom I think would be perfect for this position: Konstantinos Mavropanos. Mavropanos plays for VFB Stuttgart as a right sided center back (team switches between a back 3 and back 4 formation). I would describe Mavropanos as a super aggressive defender, who is very comfortable holding possession as well as passing. Previously he played for Arsenal in the prem and both fans and pundits were excited, however a combination of his young age and injuries meant it never worked out. He will have known Emery from his time there before he was sent on loan and ultimately sold. Konstantinos Mavropanos is an incredibly strong defensive player, exhibiting a level of aggression that sets him apart from many players. This front foot defending is especially clear with how he defends against transitions. In the case of Aston Villa, Mings and Konsa have typically dropped back and absorbed pressure during transitions, aiming to slow down the attack and shepherd the opposing players to allow their teammates to provide support. Mavropanos on the other hand actively seeks to thwart attacks before they even have a chance to develop, employing an assertive and proactive style of defending. I have done my best to show this in some pictures but this is quite hard so I recommend you watch some match highlights to see this better. https://preview.redd.it/ctlvdvwx0f4b1.png?width=2304&format=png&auto=webp&s=d473f5ed1305e81eb82512f6368e4ef0f47e9c9e Here you see there is a quick transition against Stuttgart where there are 2 defenders (with 3 coming back in support) against 3 attackers. While his teammate keeps dropping and tracking the runner, Mavropanos turns and sets his feet before tackling the dribbler and regaining possession for his team (dibbles past a man too but that's just an extra). It's worth noting that Mings has also started adopting this approach under Unai Emery, particularly evident in matches like Brighton at the end of the season. Being able to stop attacks before they start is incredibly useful when we play such a high line and commit so many people forward as there is less support from team mates. When facing a slow build-up, Mavropanos, Mings, and Konsa, demonstrate similarities in their defensive profiles, with Mavropanos sharing a comparable style with Mings. His tenacity and physicality allow him to dominate in various defensive aspects, Mavropanos excels in winning tackles, interceptions, and aerial duels, statistically surpassing both mings and Konsa by a significant margin in these categories as shown below. https://preview.redd.it/vbbgr6951f4b1.png?width=726&format=png&auto=webp&s=a24b7554eb7b51b5e686668a866b023e5f97d166 It's important to consider that these statistics may be slightly inflated due to his increased defensive workload, his team will play in a Bundesliga relegation playoff today, combined with his more aggressive defending and differences in the difficulty of each player's respective leagues. That being said, these stats still go to show that Mavropanos undeniably possesses an exceptional defensive skill set. Mavropanos is a great fit for the hybrid RB role compared to most other CB’s as, alongside his defensive stability discussed above, he possesses strong ball-carrying skills, dribbling ability, and ability to advance the play. These qualities make him stand out among most other CBs who are typically less comfortable doing these things. https://preview.redd.it/0fcgl0x61f4b1.png?width=1258&format=png&auto=webp&s=4cf8830ccbfae6dba72d6b03ccbbacaa9a88c174 Above you can see Mavropanos is comfortable driving with the ball at his feet in a very similar manner that you might expect Matty Cash to do. As a matter of fact he actually has more touches than matty cash in the defensive penalty box, defensive third, midfield third and attacking penalty box with the Pol only outperforming him in the attacking third with 6 more touches per average (did not show a percentile comparison as they are different for RB and CB). Additionally Mavropanos completes .63 take on per game which is very good for a CB and despite the lowever success % this is understandable too as he is more advanced than most other center backs. The same concept applies for how often he is disposed as when he is playing more advanced he doesn't have the safety of his goalkeeper to pass back to like most other center backs so this isn't a number to be alarmed at. Again for this reason his long and short passing statistically doesn't look great but it's fine and actually I'd argue 86% and 88% completion rates of short and medium passing considering his more advanced/risky passing is very respectable. He has a phenomenal technique when it comes to long passes, something we miss at the moment from the center back position unless Diego Carlos is playing. His ability to cross the ball also offers another dimension to the team as most of our crosses come from the left, and Matty Cash in my eyes at least has never been a great crosser of the ball. More importantly however Mavropanos passing range and ability align well with Emery's positional-based and ball-recycling system as he can not only help maintain possession but also can contribute to the fluidity of Villa's gameplay by starting a quick transition with a well placed long ball or suddenly attacking himself. https://preview.redd.it/taiusr281f4b1.png?width=706&format=png&auto=webp&s=cc8e5682f04449044c985a7d61b0c4576724734e Furthermore, Mavropanos's attacking ability is noteworthy. His presence in the box is reminiscent of a striker, and his shooting ability confirms this impression. He can strike the ball from long range very well and due to his height and size is also a real aerial threat. Villa aren't great at corner and set piece situations but his addition to the team I'm sure will improve greatly in this regard. Despite registering only 2 goals and 1 assist in the Bundesliga this season, his non-penalty xG of 4 suggests he may have been unlucky and, his contribution of 37 shot-creating actions from the center-back position is impressive. Considering all these factors, I feel Mavropanos emerges as an ideal candidate for the hybrid center-back/right-back role. He not only excels as a strong defender but also possesses the necessary skills to contribute effectively in the attacking phase. With his remarkable technical prowess and adaptability, he would be able to seamlessly transitions between defensive duties and actively support the team's offensive efforts, providing a fluidity and element of unpredictability that would greatly benefit any team. Thank you all for reading and id love to hear what you think. submitted by ChemistCapy to avfc [link] [comments] |
2023.06.06 17:21 aleks313 I'm a student working on a J-1 Visa. My employer refuses to let me have a second job.
I am currently working in Massachusetts on a J-1 Visa. This is my third time coming for summer work, and every summer I take up 2 jobs. This year I'm working with a new employer as my primary job (my work visa depends on this job, if I get fired and my sponsor agency CIEE finds out, I get deported).
This new job had a change of management during spring, which I was not informed about. Together with the management there were many changes to the rules and employee benefits, the main one being that we can no longer get a second job. Management said they would give us about 60 hours of work a week, to compensate for the lack of a second job.
I have student loans to pay and need to help my family (my parents lost their job during Covid and have only been working sporadically since), 60 hours a week (paid at minimum wage) is simply not enough for me to cover all those costs. In previous years I've worked an average of 90 hours a week, and I wish to do that again. However, management told me they don't want me working for another company, and that they would give me very different schedules every week to make it impossible for me to work a second job.
In addition to this, the company I'm currently working for is doing very shady things. For example, they told me they won't withhold any taxes from my paycheck as "J1s don't pay any taxes" (which is wrong). They also refused to pay me the hours I worked because I lost my social security card (I still provided them with my Social Security Number which I had written down on a separate piece of paper). They are making me work night shifts, which is a breach of contract for the sponsoring agency (CIEE).
Yesterday I called CIEE to ask for a change of my primary job, and I told them everything that was said in the paragraph above. They did not take me seriously at all, and told me that I could "talk to the employer and fix the problems". Every attempt at communication with management has only gotten me more passive aggressive responses, and worse treatment by colleagues (Another colleague of mine was heavily yelled at by other employees for voicing his concerns with the company).
What can I do here? Does my employer have the right to deny me a second job? What can I do about my sponsoring agency not taking the problem seriously?

2023.06.06 16:51 CarlBanks138 Help confirming some finds from an unexpected Jefferson Nickel grab
Hey everyone,
Visited my mom out of town last weekend and she mentioned she had a couple of smaller nickel rolls in her jewelry box that she'd saved from who knows when. They were already opened and resealed, but I quickly scanned a couple and saw some 1980's dates but nothing too crazy. Last night I got a chance to take a look at the rest of them, and I want to verify that I found what it looks like I may have? I've included pictures below as well as the relevant link to the variety I believe it might be. My digital microscope takes horrid pictures, so please excuse the phone cam shot of another screen. Not a good look, I know - but the alternative came out so much worse.
1964-D nickel 1/4 I think this is

1964-D nickel 2/4 Going with -

1957-D Thoughts are -

Also - I think this happens to be a 1964 SMS nickel? Edit: Just saw the proof coins for them wouldn't have an S, so that's my mistake it seems
Phone shot with comparison between the two 1964 pieces as well as the font and obverse
Imgur Link with better quality pictures All this plus about 20-30 FS nickels ranging from 1981-1999 (as well as some non-FS earlier dates).
She's not a collector, but I'll have to ask if she got them from someone because even without the ones I mentioned above being correct, that's too fortunate for a random pull. Thanks for any help!

2023.06.06 16:36 elbattinson [QCrit] THE OTHER GIRLS, YA Supernatural Romance (75K)
This is my Nanowrimo project that I’m currently doing my first revision pass on. I know that comping Twilight is a no no but it’s also what I read in preparation for starting this project. I wanted to write sapphic Twilight. I’m always unsure of what stakes to include in query letters. I hit most of the novel’s major stakes below but the entire first act is mostly internal conflict that transitions into external conflict by the second act and I’m never sure how to word that in query format (any advice is appreciated!) A stake I was iffy on was whether or not to include that the main character is coming into her sexuality, because whereas that is a subtle pull to the story, it’s not what I wanted to focus on beyond the other factors in the manuscript.
Any advice is appreciated! I'm still very new to query writing and despite lurking here for ages and previously posting a QCrit for a now scrapped project, I always feel like a deer trying to walk on ice when I'm preparing my query. ***
Dear, Agent.
Seventeen-Year Old Harper Bloom has everything. A spot on the cheerleading team, perfect grades, and the adoration of her peers of course. She even has a cute boyfriend. A really cute boyfriend. Everyone loves high-school clichés and she checks her own boxes one by one until she carves out the life she wants at Silver Creek High. At least- she does until she finds out Chris is cheating on her.
Maybe taking a tire iron to his car about it isn’t Harper’s best idea, but it’s how she deals with his betrayal. With Spirit Week and homecoming hot on her heels, she has to decide what kind of ex-girlfriend to be: The sobbing mess or the stone cold bitch? Losing Chris feels like a relief, but he still ruined her shot at the perfect senior year. Harper’s chances at recovering from this unforeseen roadblock are fleeting. She planned her senior year around her cliché docket from choosing to date a football player in the first place all the way to prom. Life seriously can’t throw her another curveball or she might lose it.
Enter curveball number 2, Kate Babineaux. The new girl. She’s tall, dark, and irrevocably beautiful. Kate is everything Harper isn’t: an effortless girls’ girl. Kate slides into her life like the puzzle piece Harper didn’t even know she was missing. Even Jeni, Harper’s best friend, seems to agree. For the first time in Harper’s life, she has the friend group she’s always seen on the TV shows she binged as a starry eyed kid. All that’s missing is the romance, real romance, not the crap Chris was trying to sell her.
Everything changes when Jeni goes missing. Chris’ ever increasing temper reaches a new height, Mr. Crawford starts dodging her questions, and Kate’s darkness extends beyond her appearance. The police say everything is fine, but Harper knows better. If she wants any answers she’ll have to go into the woods herself to hunt them down and Harper’s always kept her eyes on her prize. The only difference now is her adjusted rulebook, the woods, and what Kate’s been hiding from her.
THE OTHER GIRLS (75,000) is a YA Supernatural Romance that combines the supernatural elements of Twilight with the coming of age themes of Ladybird. I’m currently in my senior year of my English degree at [University]. In my spare time when I’m not wish fulfilling what baby gay me would’ve loved reading, I’m taking care of my dog and binge playing The Sims 4.
