2023.06.07 18:09 Circuit_Deity De School Set Reports: 28/4 , 29/4, 5/5 and 3/6
Long overdue set reports! I promised one for Pariah’s set on 5/5 a while ago and never followed through - here they all are, spurned by my return to our favorite basement after a month abroad. Consider it a miracle that I recall enough to write this up 😵💫
Friday 28/4:
Arrived at around 2:30am, and stood in the no tickets line as always(I find it is usually shorter and quicker than getting a ticket). My favorite selector there(sassy, “let’s see those IDs loves!), and in within 10 minutes.
My roommate, partner and I first spent some time in the garden smoking and socializing, but quickly made our way down for Orphx, who were finishing up their set - a bit slower(134bpm?), hypnotic, great live set and loved watching those two work in unison. Nothing that got me into stampede mode but nice to hear a bit more of a classic Detroit sound in the basement.
UVB took over and things began to blur for us - the M my partner and I had taken earlier started to make itself known and we fell into the groovy trap UVB set for us. Dancing separately but as one, feeling like you’re the only person dancing in your own little black hole on the dance floor. Such a lovely feeling opening your eyes when the beat gets harder and seeing the crowd writhe together.
Around 6am I was helping a person clean up their bottle that fell from the front right bass boxes when a friend in their group(clad only in a full body harness, you were v hot btw) offered me a wet wipe as a return favor. His smile was so genuine and lovely, and the wet wipe revived me! Such a nice little moment on that dance floor, it’s these kind of moments I seek out on these nights 🖤
Refreshed and full of love, we kept dancing until close, UVB delivering a booming, relentless set without it getting tiring. Seeing DJs like him playing reminds one that certain people just have the ability to master a soundsystem - kick after kick without it getting mushy and boring.
A lovely closing and a nice bike ride home - first one for me this year where the weather was warm and beautiful. A little joint and lots of rest to close out my consciousness for the day.

Saturday 29/4:
Rested a little and brought my partner to Schiphol, attended a fun BBQ in Leiden, and then return to Amsterdam with an itch to dance again. UVB’s closing had left me unsatisfied and with a need for more untz untz.
Arrived again around 2am, same situation as the night before. Met an Irish couple in the line(I say couple tentatively as they claim they’d broken up a month before but were still all over each other), and gave them some leftover party favors before making an Irish exit(like a magical drug fairy).
Went downstairs to Ben Sims shepherding the floor into a raucous scene - wonderful crowd that evening, who were all letting go completely. I joined a group up front who I see often(tall femme person with leopard print hair, lingerie top to bottom, tall skinny masc with slicked back hair and 00’s style Oakleys - forgot your names if you guys are on here!), and danced danced danced.
Kerrie took over for Ben around 5 but I felt the groove wasn’t there; she played very hard, a bit too much, and the bass felt very muddled. The type of techno you’d get at Verknipt - fun to dance hard to for a little while, but unsustainable. Nonetheless, I stayed until closing, driven by some kind of stubborn determination to see the night out twice in one weekend.
On my way out, I saw the Irishman I’d met earlier, standing sadly by the bathroom entrances. He’d been shrugged off by his companion, and was distraught. Gave him a hug and a pep talk, and cycled home. A kind of melancholy reminder that not everyone has a good night.

Friday 5/5:
Was very ready for this one! Had felt soooo shit the previous week after my double header, so when I woke up Friday with the dance bug, I knew it was meant to happen. Enlisted my roommate/trusty dance partner to join me, and we arrived a bit early, 12:30am or so. Did so because I wanted to catch the tail end of Loek Frey, who I’ve become quite interested in, seeing some of his online sets.
He was playing a slow, hypnotic set, full of bleeps, bloops, and intertwined melodies. Great slow start in the basement - sound was good and I’d love to see him play a later slot in DS sometime! Just know he was holding back some banging because of the time slot.
After a toilet and smoke break my roommate and I decided to stay upstairs for Roi Perez’s set - what a lovely decision! It truly felt like a night at Pano where everyone is happy, celebrating, in unison. People waving and smiling at each other from across the room, Roi gleefully leading us into the morning. If you were there and you saw a tall, black haired man losing it on the raised podium, that was me. There was a moment went Roi transitioned into a song(ID unsure) with heavy gospel vocals, and the light person took the cue and suddenly the bright yellow spotlights flooded him with light from behind - a moment I’ll never forget. He appeared like some kind of angel of techno, delivering us to hedonism and salvation.
After he finished, with light peeking in the windows behind, my roommate and I thought about leaving on a good note and skipping the migration down to the basement - but we stayed, and I’m so glad we did.
Pariah was still in his first hour downstairs, keeping it easy and danceable, but not apocalyptic. However, this quickly changed. The last two hours downstairs were the most insane sonic experience I’ve never had the pleasure of witnessing. It was like what we had just experienced upstairs had gone to the dark side; a seething, undulating mass of noise that shouldn’t have been music but yet made us DANCE!
Pariah showed us what an absolute master of sound design he is - I felt like there were times he wasn’t even selecting a track, just isolating the perfect different waves and then slowly combining them into an overwhelming beat that drove the crowd crazy. So many moments that night when insanity broke out - cheering, stomping, arms all in the air. It was like he was playing a live set in the style of Stef M, but on CDJs. Unbelievable.
When the set ended, the crowd cried for more and he cried back “I’ve run out of tunes!” I saw more people come up to him after and thank him for the set than I’ve ever seen for another DJ there before(myself included). My best club night ever, by far.

Saturday 3/6
I’d said in a thread here that I was going the night before, but my roommate and I weren’t feeling it after roomie night with the others, so we saved our energy for Saturday.
Usual time of arrival, around 1:30am; walked right in - also the first time I’ve had one of the security guards make a comment about the stickers on my phone case(“Ik hoef t niet voor jou te uitleggen, hé?”). Felt good, haha.
Went straight downstairs right when DJ Shahmarab was handing off to Crystallmess - who demonstrated good DJ skills but I felt not a great connection with the dance floor. It seemed we were all eager to get into a dance trance, but they kept transitioning to very hip-hoppy edits and it was hard to get into a groove. An interesting style to hear in the DS basement, but not really my thing. Thusly my roommate and I spent a good part of this set socializing upstairs in the garden.
Went back down to catch Juliana Huxtable, and felt a similar style, but with more extended periods to dance - a bit more boomy and thumping with more classic techno elements. Danced until around 6:30 when our bodies told us it was time to head home!
Overall not as notable as the aforementioned nights, but still fun to be there on a quieter night, and I saw my friends(leopard print/oakleys) again!
Garmin step count: 38,970
Now really looking forward to SPFDJ this weekend and Het Weekend later this month!
Love to hear if any of you guys were also at these nights and have similar or contrasting experiences!
😘😘🖤

2023.06.07 17:31 ToughSeaworthiness67 Odds of a Studio Series Transit?
As many are probably aware at this point, transit has been cut from ROTB. Though in a recent interview with the director, it was revealed that the VFX for the scene were complete, and that the scene was removed for being deemed “too dark”.
Since the planning, design and production of most figures happen a couple years before the intended release, do you think it’s possible to see an eventual Studio Series Transit, given transit was intended to be in the movie until a couple months ago?

HELP
So I have no experience in sound design or anything but I need help with a project. My husband wants to have a sound wave of our baby's first cry as a tattoo and I was hoping for father's day to get the sound wave made so that he can get the tattoo whenever's he ready. I have a video from the operating room (yay c section) but I want to isolate our son's cry out. Can anyone on here do that for me or point me to somewhere that can? Thanks in advance!

2023.06.07 17:26 BuildingSupplySmore What would you need to replicate those cheap flat pack wood kits?
Hey there, I was hoping to learn more about laser cutters, in some layman terms.
I've always loved those little flat pack model kits that are in toy stores and box stores. They're usually thin wood with a dark edge, so I assume most of them are laser cut.
It appears you're able to make gears and small assemblable parts from these, by cutting notches the same thickness as the wood sheets.
I've never used a laser printer before, but I have drafting and architectural design experience (mostly AutoCAD for 2D stuff, SketchUp and Revit for 3D). I also have machine shop experience, mostly lathe work.
I've always thought it would be fun to design my own flat pack model kits and assemble them myself, but I don't really know what that would require.
I'm probably unsure of some really obvious stuff, so be patient with me, haha.
To achieve those model kits, I think you'd need:
A computer Monitor Design Software Laser Cutter Wood materials
I would assume the software for these laser cutters is pretty easy to run, but I'm not sure what software they use, and if it's anything like AutoCAD.
And do you basically work on a "sheet" the size of your laser cutter bed, draw your cutouts, then press "go" and it just starts cutting?
Do you have any good suggestions for what laser cutters might fit what I'd like to do?
And what thickness wood panels are those models?
I was hoping someone on here might already be making these or something similar and could give me some tips. And if I'm missing anything else required for this sort of setup.
It's not something I plan to do anytime soon, but it's something I think would be fun to save up for.
I also thought it could be possible to laser cut a cassette rack, since they're light weight, and the biggest hassle in making them is all the shelf cuts.
Thanks.

2023.06.07 17:13 endersgame69 Adopted By Humans VII C19
My life before Earth was a dreamless sleep. A thing that is in a very real sense, a kind of death. I did not feel for the longest time, like I really existed. What I mean is… I was a tool that worked. Not much else. All of us were.
The dlamisa guiding the AI construction. The programmer who created new software. The geneticist who had to oversee the dying to identify useful genetic mutations that might be useful in improving our species ability to survive.
And the student who aspired to rise to the heights of government… yes… even those at our highest levels of administration, our ‘council’ was no different than I or anyone else. I have to say, I never thought I would give my species credit for this over humanity, but at least our senior leaders were as dead inside as the rest of us.
They weren’t exploiting us to bring happiness to themselves, they shared in our common hopeless trudging, whereas most human dictators freed themselves but enslaved their people.
The upshot to this of course was that my quiet revolution, that which was undermining everything of the last few thousand years, would, I believed, be as embraced by them as by everyone else.
I’m sure there were people investigating me by now, and while I doubted it even occurred to Livingston, I’m fairly certain that somewhere in the halls of power on Dlamias, somebody set me to this with the specific intent that I be killed by the Praeda. They, not having recognized the value of the changes radiating outward, would have seen the first hints of it, seen me as a disruptive outlier, and decided a dangerous mission was the best way to handle me without creating an interplanetary incident with an allied state.
Essentially it’s what they did with Bonny Red and all the other scouts. Send the problem elements to useful but dangerous jobs and sooner or later they’d be killed off and there’d be no more problem.
Understanding this terrified me to my core, and when Fauve arrived for dinner that evening, I addressed the Walkers and told them what I suspected.
“How sure are you of this?” Fauve asked, her eyes were narrow as she searched my face, Byron and Boatswain, were speaking silently through their expressions as she asked me, but I could tell they reached the same conclusion.
Michael, thankfully, had finished early and was enthralled in a virtual game and so, heard nothing from his room. William and Rebecca were quiet too, but I could see this definitely hit them hard.
“As sure as I am that I’m still going.” I answered. “This is exactly the sort of way my homeworld likes to deal with ‘problematic elements’. And I have been a very problematic element for some time now.”
“And we adore you for it.” Rebecca insisted, “But what does that mean for us?”
“Maybe nothing, maybe everything?” I sort of asked, and reached for my glass of wine. I drank half the glass and stared down into the dark red remainder. “If you pulled out, I could explain privately to the Presider, but to be honest, I think you all have a better chance at this than anyone.”
“Really?” William asked.
“Yes.” I said, deadpan. “There are probably a few thousand people who have any experience working with aliens. Only a few hundred total who live with them. Only one household has generations of multispecies experience, and besides that?” I pointed toward Rebecca, “A master of genetic science.” I pointed to William, “An engineer building the first space station in history to be able to construct designs from multiple species.” I gestured to Fauve, “A media expert who has been learning her trade more or less from the time she was fourteen and who has amassed knowledge on how to ‘connect’ with nonhumans.”
I huffed, “When you get right down to it, the Walkers have become outliers, anomalies on Earth, with a breadth of experience that make you indispensable… but this is dangerous. You’re venturing into a place where you’ll be met with great suspicion and probably a lot of hostility. I don’t want anything to happen to you, so normally I would say not to go.”
“Normally?” William asked.
I drank the rest of my wine and held out my glass, Boatswain grabbed the bottle closest to him and tilted the bottle over to refill it, the sloshing noise made my ears twitch with anticipation. If it weren’t for the somber discussion, my tail would have been wagging.
“Yes. If we fail, at least we have a good ship to escape in and the good Captain will be able to go nearly anywhere. At least this way, if things go wrong, we have a way to escape. But on a planet? We’re trapped.” I shook my head, and Boatswain reflexively let out a very defensive growl at the prospect of hostilities.
“You might be safer going, than staying…but you should go in knowing what to expect. From what Bonny Red says, the attacks are sporadic and focused on outlying and obscure areas, this is the same thing that happened when the war broke out last time. My people, and many others, started trying to weaken their neighbors in secret before the Rogue World would pass us by. If some species are doing that again, I doubt it will be nearly as hard for fighting to break out this time.” I drank half my glass and set it down.
Fauve, for her part, was sifting through her datapad, I wondered what she was up to, but I didn’t have to wait long to find out.
“Wow…” She whistled and flipped her datapad around. “Even Chi’cagoa Rea didn’t look this bad.” She was looking at photo records of the old war, it was hardly classified information, and was well documented for the most part, but most of the information was very divided from one species to the next, each one concerned only with their side and their perspective.
It was only now after life on Earth and seeing their amalgamated records of perspectives that I realized the value of gathering all views of events together, and how myopic we really have been for a very long time.
“We’re still going, of course, am I right, mom, dad?” Fauve asked.
William was sullen for a moment. “Yes. Yes definitely.” His face was grave, his eyes steadily focused on the table, but not really seeing it. “The first ships will be ready soon, if violence does break out I can make sure Michael gets a spot on the escape ships, and he’ll be safe with Iskandar’s family. I suppose we could have him stay with my sisters or cousins but… better for him to be closer to the familiar.”
Rebecca made her own thoughts known soon enough, “If something happens to us out there, what then?”
None of us liked that idea, but it had to be addressed. Losing his entire family would be a horrible thing.
But at the same time, we had the best chance collectively of making sure that didn’t happen.
“Are we sure we shouldn’t just bring him with us?” Fauve asked. “Hear me out,” she said as her parents opened their mouths, she held one hand out from her body in a gesture for them to stop and listen. They did, and Fauve went on, “He’s in just as much danger here as he is there, the only difference is the time between one danger and the next. And there at least we have a ship to escape on, one that won’t leave him behind. What if he stays here and there’s a problem with construction? What if someone doesn’t give him a spot on a ship even if we reserve one. We won’t exactly be able to file a complaint now, will we?”
Her question was thick with sarcasm, and her point was as sharp as Boatswain’s teeth.
“The Red Spark is exceptionally well armed.” I added, “It’s also one of the fastest ships in the galaxy. She might be right, it might really be the safest place in all this. Plus it is technically a neutral ship, they’re less likely to fire on it.” I pointed out.
Of course I would be negligent in my duties if I didn’t properly discuss what happened at the dinner table from an academic perspective. Notably, the discussion took place away from Michael. He was still a young boy, lacking in maturity despite his relative sharpness. As such, parents often make decisions without consulting them, there are exceptions, and I will say that they would often talk to him about what he wanted and did not want for himself.
However, it was a matter of course that on issues far beyond a child’s knowledge that he would be ‘told’ what would happen and then have it explained. Discussing it away from him minimized confusion. I compare this to Fauve’s stubborn insistence on speaking to the press when she was fourteen.
The distinction of four or five years for human young is considerable, in the middle teen years, independence grows dramatically and decision making becomes that much more important for them. I had little doubt that, were Michael of the age now that Fauve was then, he would have been party to this discussion and his wishes would have carried great weight.
Further, it is noteworthy that it was William who first addressed the question of whether the family would go. Mild as he was, he was a more impulsive thinker, it seemed to me that in their marital relationship, William spoke first, and then Rebecca, after considering matters at greater length, would address the subject with thoughts of her own. Whether this was an echo of the patriarchal society of the past or of their impulsive versus deliberate personalities was impossible to say. But in studying humans I noticed that while impulsivity was common enough in both sexes, it was more pronounced in their males, not only in frequency but in grandiosity.
I theorize that this serves a similar function to the less intelligent animal life in which males must compete for attention from potential mates, such as by having brightly colored feathers or fur. Human males may therefore be prone to speaking or acting first in the hopes of garnering favorable attention.
Of course, they’re a cultured people, intelligent and with wildly varying personalities, thus I also note that the most effective mated pairs ‘blend’ their natures into productive ends. Rebecca’s tendency to speak ‘after’ him, reflected her preference to think for longer, but as on this occasion, she applied her thoughts to his to come to a viable solution.
Being family to me, I didn’t want to see them fight… but at the same time? The academic in me wishes they’d disagreed so I could gather more data on how they would have resolved such a profound disagreement.
Insofar as Fauve, her vocal opinion on the matter was heard by both parents, who at her bidding restrained themselves from interrupting her. Hearing someone out is of paramount importance to human society, and one of the most disrespectful things you can do to another is to refuse to listen to their words.
It said a great deal about the quality and amiability of their relationship with their daughter that they listened so closely to what she had to say. Too, it says something of her that what she had to say was so eminently sensible.
Of course, I still had to deal with the fact that somebody was trying to get me killed… if in a very ‘impersonal’ sort of way. But I had no intention of dying, and if anything, I was already thinking ahead as to how I might use this situation to further my rebellion, and bring about the destruction of everything I had come to loathe about our way of life.
In the end, they would thank me for it, of that, I was profoundly certain.

We could only listen while everything was explained to us, and… there was quite a lot. If you are really curious, the archives of our meeting were recorded by both the human Presider and by Livingston, who recorded the details of the meeting and their thoughts on the matter in their autobiographies.
The particulars are not necessary here.
With that understood, there are a few matters of relevance that I will mention and add my thoughts to.
First was the covert nature of the meeting. Given the nature of Rebecca and William’s work, not to mention the role of myself and Fauve’s media activities with the Barnum Cooperative, a secure ‘hard line’ was installed in the Walker household.
These ‘hard lines’ were exceptionally rare and were used exclusively for only the highest level business. The human Presider even had a single room expressly with nothing but these ‘hard lines’ leading to the embassies of multiple alien species. Those of us in the ‘Rapax’ category were, according to what I could glean from the news, spoken to most often.
Not that they told us in detail, but mentions of meetings and conferences with other species was still novel enough that it bore a mention, and at an off the hand ‘back of the napkin’ calculation I would say roughly seven out of ten such reports on a monthly basis involved meetings with other predators.
At least four out of ten from that total were with my own homeworld, unsurprising as we were the first species to discover Earth and humans…or encounter, if you hear the humans tell it. But more importantly trade was growing rapidly between us, so dealings were more frequent.
It all grew from there.
And now here we were on a hard line with the Presider and my world’s Ambassador Livingston and I was living out history again.
The details of this meeting that are relevant here, I will relay in their words.
“We will be dispatching one squadron of our warships to the Zenlu system, the world there… it doesn’t have its own name as far as we know, but according to intelligence it is fairly primitive. There are three predator species with thick space routes to it, the slenga, retarians, and triterons. They’ve managed to live two warp routes away from one another for three thousand years without fighting each other.” The Presider let that sink in, I wasn’t immediately familiar with them… but the system sounded familiar.
‘Probably something Bonny Red mentioned in one of her stories.’ I assumed, and he went on, bringing up the map and pointing to the location.
“The system is large enough to host a squadron from each of the Hundred Terrors and more besides, and we will be discussing the ‘recent events’ that have become a cause for concern.”
He didn’t need to explain what he meant, we all knew. Thanks to the increased cooperation between our two governments, we both knew that our automated probes, autoships, and a handful of physical worldbound or moonbound settlements had been attacked.
And if it happened to us both, and if it was happening to the ones we’d so recently classified as ‘Praeda’ then the chances were good it was happening on a far broader scale.
Who could blame anyone for the high tensions?
Truth be told, it makes me think all the fuss over my ‘games’ was a little…excessive.
“And while that is happening?” The Presider shifted his focus to Livingston, and as if they had prearranged for this moment the two spoke at the same time.
“You will be going too.”
“To Zenlu?” I asked. “And who? Me?” I put my hand over my chest. That was a lot of travel, plus… “But what about my doctorate? I mean, I haven’t even finished all my research? I still haven’t even seen a human male go through puberty yet, I’ve heard that is a very dramatic time and-”
“No.” Livingston interrupted.
“The rest of you…and you.” He leveled his finger at myself, then at the rest of the Walker family.
“And not to Zenlu. You will be going to the Sagittarii system star designation WR one-zero-two.” The Presider answered.
I noticed that it seemed like the Presider and my world’s ambassador were finishing each other’s sentences. There was no good way to ask however, whether this was because they got along as well as they did or whether or not it was because the two shared the exact same frustrations with various…
Shenanigans, and were just used to going back and forth in this way.
I suppose that knowledge is lost to science forever.
The Walkers looked at me as I sucked in my breath.
“What?” William asked. “Why does that matter?”
“That’s your designation for a star system, it’s the hottest star in the galaxy, about thirty-thousand light years from here, and it’s also a ‘thick space’ hub for the majority of the Praeda designated species in the known galaxy. Home to multiple space stations and it is considered to be neutral ground for all who go there. It’s where ‘The Common’ meets.” I explained, and William cleared his throat.
“What is ‘The Common’?” He asked.
“In your terms, Mr. Walker, you might call it ‘The Praeda Common’ like your old ‘League of Nations’ if I remember your history, a place where the many species can converse with one another to work out differences. However, unlike your League of Nations, only those evolved from prey species or ‘Praeda’ to use your term, are allowed as members. Rapax might visit, but only on one single, neutral ship.”
“I… I don’t understand. Why are we going? I have work and…” Rebecca started to object, but ceased when William’s hand found her shoulder. His touch with her was typically very gentle, and this was no exception. But I noticed that in conversation, they usually had a bit of separation in their space, and neither initiated physical contact until after the discussion was over…except if it was serious.
So when he touched her shoulder, she understood he felt something far more serious was afoot, and the Presider explained.
“It seems impossible, I realize this. Normally we would field armies of diplomats, normally we would start making negotiations early, we would do… a lot of things. But there is no precedent for this in recorded history, there is but one example I know of, and I’m using that as my inspiration… in the hopes that it might work.” He paused and drank a glass of water, and if I may say for the sake of history, he looked very weary.
Humans age faster than dlamisa, but in that moment, looking at their presider with his wrinkled face and weary expression, it seemed he’d aged fifty Earth years before my very eyes. I couldn’t help but pity him.
“I won’t make you go, I won’t even ask Livingston to order it of you, Bailey Walker.” He said, a strain like a taut string underlay his voice as he spoke. “But centuries ago, there was a time of great hatred, fear, and loathing between the people of this place, in the country that once stood here, and a place on the far side of the world. A land that lived behind a curtain of iron, both sides lived in terror of one another… both armed with the kinds of weapons that would eventually nearly destroy us. And there was a young human girl who wrote to their Premier, like their Presider. She asked him ‘if he would vote for peace or war’.”
The Presider chuckled a little, “The story goes that he actually wrote back. The story spread, and as it happened, the young girl and her family went to the far side of the world and met the people there, and her words echo down to me today. She said, ‘They’re just like us.’ It did not end the darkness, but it did thaw out the ice between the two a little. My hope is that if we send a handful of people, people we know want nothing but the best for us all… that maybe, if my colleague will pardon the expression, if we ‘humanize’ ourselves to them… then perhaps we will no longer seem like monsters in the darkness to their eyes or…whatever they have.”
I would later check in to the Presider’s story, it turned out he was right. Such an incident did truly occur in the nineteen eighties of their old calendar.
“Knowing that… will you go?” He asked.
“What if something happens?” Rebecca asked, “We’ll be trapped, what if they do us harm, or take us hostage?”
“It is…possible.” Livingston acknowledged, “But we will make it clear that this will be an act of war, and like your old ‘League of Nations’ they have no ability to compel the others to go along with anything. Plus you will reside on the safest ship in the known galaxy.”
“Wait-” I said, but just then a connection buzz rang out, and another face appeared on the projection.
“Aw’right ye land lubbers, ye listen up good, me an me crew’ve been right busy for a fair bit, but we’re in bound fer Earth and we’ll be there in half an Earth Orbit, little delay over me original plans but…shenanigans bein what they be, it cannae be ‘elped, savvy? So, are ye goin or are ye not?” Bonny Red said at once.
“I’ll go.” I answered.
A nod passed between husband and wife, and the two said at once.
“And so will we.”
And just like that, it was settled.

2023.06.07 17:05 Boronian1 Appreciation and questions post
Hello,
I just finished the fourth book and aim to read the fifth one before July to be ready to dive right in the latest one :-)
I really enjoy this series a lot!
Not just the fast paced action, I especially love the world building. It is noticeable how extensive it is, it is not just a dungeon with a random level for every book, there is much more to it. From early on we get glimpses about the politics behind the dungeon but that gets more prominent and more important by every book. It isn't just anymore about surviving, it is so much more. And there are so many players, the AI being one of them which is great!
I loved the idea and persecution of the Dungeon Anarchist's Cookbook. I am a sucker for history and this is even better.
But beside the game also shines with its humor and pop culture references. A lot of the descriptions are funny but also scenes and interactions. Though it is not all lighthearted fun and I really appreciate that. And not just how dark and manipulative the dungeon can be, but the backstory of Carl's story to which we get small glimpses is really interesting. I want to learn more about his family and how that formed him. It is very enticing.
The crazyness of it all has to be mentioned too. The different scenarios and ideas for every floor, for all the quests and the twists, the classes, the items, the skills, the names, the descriptions,... There are so many things and it is all so much over the top, but in the best way. And it just gets wilder with every book!
I like the writing style a lot where you are following one character but you are not privy to 100% of their thoughts, so you know they plan something but you don't know what... it keeps the tension high :-)
My questions:
- What is the set of predetermined conditions for the cookbook to appear? I would love to know if it exists at all. Probably just a throw away line when the book got introduced but it really piqued my interest.
- How did you come up with all the crazy stuff, Matt?
- And how much of the dungeon and the world have you designed before writing the first book? I am sure some things change often enough of course to fit better the story you are writing at the moment.
So, thanks a lot
hepafilter for writing all these books, I really really like them!

2023.06.07 16:39 SpacePaladin15 The Nature of Predators 122
First Prev Patreon Arxur POV of the Cradle Series wiki Official subreddit Discord ---
Memory transcription subject: Captain Sovlin, United Nations Fleet Command Date [standardized human time]: January 15, 2137 I was claiming an unwanted milestone with this voyage; I was certain I was the furthest below water of any Gojid, who hadn’t already been dead and sinking, in history. Some predators were monitoring their scanners for the slightest sign of activity, though I was told an entire team was dedicated to sonar monitoring in a separate chamber too. Sitting in a dark room with headphones for hours, with no idea what was happening, sounded awful. The supervisory officials and secondary team here got a much better deal.
Additionally, fire control technicians oversaw guidance systems on the bridge. Most of their work was grounded in electronic and digital concerns. From what Onso had told me, this vessel had underwater missiles which were connected to the ship computer by wires. Once the payload got close enough to the target, an onboard homing mechanism took over.
By watching the various stations, I was beginning to decipher bits and pieces from their screens. Judging by the learning curve, anyone with training in starship sensors could adjust to sonar after a few days, in a pinch. Onso seemed aware of most duties, having studied up on the intricacies; I was grateful for his explanations. All the same, it was of some comfort that Tyler, Samantha, and Carlos were in unfamiliar territory too.
“We’re getting close to the presumed location of the Farsul base,” Carlos whispered. “There’s no telling what they’re hiding down here. Maybe it’s everything that’s been done to every species!”
Onso flicked his ears. “A proper database would help with bringing our culture back, exactly as it was. They’re the historian species, so it’s a good place to go digging. They have a weapon as great as any Kolshian tech: information. The baseline for every civilization that has ever lived.”
“I wonder what they have on humanity. Perhaps one or two things that are true?” Sam snickered.
Tyler pinched the bridge of his nose. “What made them so certain we died in nuclear Armageddon? How much did they hide about us?”
“I don’t know, but my ship’s doctor wrote a paper in an ethics class about why it was morally just to execute you for your aggression. They didn’t teach anything good about you,” I offered.
Samantha beamed with mock excitement. “Wow, what a splendid ethics class, and a rousing thesis by the good-hearted doctor! Meanwhile, our physicians swear an oath to do no harm. I’m glad that prey are so much more well-versed on right and wrong.”
Tyler struck a puzzled expression. “I took an ethics class in college, before I dropped out of that shit-hole to piss off my old man. Best decision of my life. Anyhow, there were some interesting dilemmas they brought up in that class. The trolley problem is about if it’s ethical to ever do harm, but for good, you know?”
“I don’t. What’s the trolley problem?” I asked.
“There’s a train going down a track toward five people. You can pull a lever so it only hits one dude on another path instead. Should you?”
“Why does anyone have to get run over by a train? Did Onso make this garbage up?”
The Yotul flashed his teeth with a growling sound, pinning his ears back against his head. I didn’t see why my question was objectionable; he was the one with an affinity for outdated trains, to the detriment of advancement. The marsupial made a point of lamenting railroad destruction when we first met.
“Oh, fuck off.” Tyler rolled his blue eyes, and raised his hands in exasperation. “Your ethics classes wanted to genocide our whole planet!”
Carlos nodded. “And us predators talk about killing the least amount of people. Even I see the irony.”
“The Federation has no redeeming attributes,” Sam hissed. “Guess we’re gonna get to see Baldy’s real culture soon. Then we’ll know if the rest of the galaxy used to have a brain.”
My spines bristled, at the thought of uncovering the original Gojid culture. While I knew that the Federation committed similar atrocities as omnivorous and predator races, it was still painful to think of our real history being flaunted in front of me. What if the Terrans could throw past atrocities in my face, and hammer home the fact that a species’ empathy wasn’t a prevailing factor against cruelty? I couldn’t imagine how it felt for the predators to continually defend their past.
If our past culture was depraved, I don’t want it rebuilt or brought back. We could’ve been like Onso’s kind, killing our own people over food. The fact that I was worried about our discoveries meant I’d accepted the ludicrous idea that the Farsul had institutions beneath the waves. Perhaps I trusted the humans too much, but it was a rare occasion when they were off the mark. They’d been a reliable source of information, even if they weren’t often forthcoming. I studied Captain Fournier as he presided over the bridge; his words on submarine capabilities left me shaken.
Understanding why the predators behaved with such a laissez-faire attitude toward extinction was a moot point; worrying for them was the emotion I couldn’t squash. I knew the three humans from my shuttle were all from different tribes on Earth. If we won this war and peace prevailed in the galaxy, what was to stop the Terran settlements from pointing doomsday weapons at each other again? Would Samantha and Tyler be trying to kill each other?
There were certain crevasses in humanity’s history that were like a mirror, when the comparisons were spelled out in plain fashion. However, in this area, I wasn’t worried about similarities being unearthed. There was an inherent difference in our species’ aggressivity that was evident, given our contrasting sensibilities. It bothered me, knowing that Terrans were not suited to long-term cooperation with each other.
“Can your aggression ever truly sto—” I started to blurt.
A sonar supervisor barked words in a commanding voice, after receiving a broadband communique from her team. “Two matching acoustic signatures, 200 meters out. We’ve put a tracker on them and forwarded the data to weapons.”
Captain Fournier clasped his hands behind his back. “Two contacts, 200 meters out. We’ll log the sound patterns in our database. Maintain battle readiness and prepare to fire on my command.”
With enemy submersibles sighted, the crackpot underwater base theory looked more plausible. Onso’s eyes lit up, as the human shipmates coordinated various actions. I could see a security feed of the torpedo bay, where predators were prepared to physically load replacement weapons from racks. The munitions looked massive, even compared to a predator’s unyielding frame. Other Terrans were tending to pre-loaded tubes, hooking up communications cables.
The wires do seem a little primitive, but it’s stealthy and immune to interference. The predators have extravagant tech, yet it’s only used when it’s optimal. Much of the necessary procedures and checks could be done by weapons specialists on the bridge. Captain Fournier growled the order to fire two torpedoes, and fire control ejected the munitions through the muzzle doors. Without a viewport, I could only judge the launch’s success from received data. From what I could tell, the twin projectiles were propelling themselves in the wrong direction.
Onso had noticed my confused gaze. “Yeah, they’re aimed off-kilter, just at first. Makes it difficult for the enemy to tell where the missile came from…to track it. It’s like interfering with targeting on a starship.”
The Yotul’s explanation proved correct again; fire control routed the torpedoes back on course, after their initial journey. The Farsul submarines were oblivious to the incoming weapons, and with our minimalist noise, they might not detect anything until their vessels were annihilated. The predatory nature of this sneak attack wasn’t lost on me. The humans operated unseen, not alerting foes to their presence until it was too late.
The cables were cut once the torpedoes were in seeking range; the warheads’ active sonar was inescapable in close proximity. The pings tipped off the exact enemy locations, and allowed last second course corrections. Human engineering was perfect in orchestrating a kill, as I never should’ve doubted. They’d risen to every challenge hurled at them, from bringing drones into spatial warfare, to shield-breaking missiles. The ocean was an old, familiar hunting ground to them, so this fight was both natural and intuitive.
Sonar screens lit up with bursts of noise, painting a story of metal cracking like a dropped fruit. The power of our munitions contributed to the explosion’s loudness too; that level of energy output was anything but quiet. Stealth was no longer necessary though, with our submarine’s proverbial fangs planted in the Farsul’s throats. I could imagine the two submerged vessels being spliced into shrapnel, as the detonations clashed against their plating.
Captain Fournier conversed with the sonar supervisor, before turning to the bridge. “Two confirmed kills. Continue on a descent course, in the direction of those ships.”
“We go toward them, we’ll find the base,” I muttered.
Onso wagged his tail. “We find the base, we save the Yotul. We rid ourselves of their influence once and for all!”
Samantha raised an eyebrow. “Assuming they don’t wipe digital data or blow up the base, when all is lost. They love scorched earth, lightly suggested by the whole exterminator hoopla. Better destroyed than used by predators.”
“You are irony-poisoned.” Carlos shook his head lightly. “We get to the Archives, and we find what we can. Even if they wipe servers, who says our techies can’t recover it?”
Our submarine descended ever deeper, pressing ahead toward the real Farsul Archives. Talsk’s moon was falling above us, and space fleets were clashing around the deorbiting body. All the same, the real battle was a handful of stealth ships here, dishing out silent strikes. We remained vigilant for other enemies, knowing we were close to the base’s suspected location. If they spotted us first, then they would have a chance to strike before we could.
Is there any way to defend against an oncoming torpedo, if the Farsul have such weapons? It seems like you never sense them coming, and you can’t…look out a window. Captain Fournier pursed his lips. “Sweep the area with an active sonar ping. We need to get a read on the terrain and hopefully, the base’s exact location.”
The sonar supervisor relayed the orders, and Onso tensed up a little. The Yotul whispered to me that active pings gave away our position, by transmitting our own sound into the water. However, sailing blind into unknown territory could end us crashing, or missing the base altogether. We had to hold our breath, and pray the Farsul wouldn’t pick us up. Their capabilities were unknown, but they must possess listening devices for deep-water travel to be possible.
Knowing that we were more than a thousand meters below water, I didn’t want to find out what would happen to us if the ship imploded. It was impressive that it wasn’t crushed by the outside pressure already, come to think of it. At this depth, atmospheric pressure couldn’t be suitable for land lifeforms. That was a fear I didn’t need to dwell on.
The acoustic energy illuminated the terrain for our sightless submarine, allowing the predators to map their surroundings. I listened to the bridge chatter, as they scrambled to classify nearby points of interest. Echo sounding confirmed we were close to the ocean bottom; it was level apart from a few elevation shifts. Deep-sea invertebrates sprouted skeletons on the sea floor, wherever space was available. The most promising sign was a wide area of unusual signal absorption, which was believed to be the base.
As nervous as I was about getting attacked, well out of any sun’s eye, it seemed like we’d gotten away with the emitted ping. Perhaps it was foolish to assign human competence to the Farsul. Why would they expect to see other vessels
on the seafloor, armed with a predator’s tech? How could a prey animal even think of using detection methods, which hunted other ships down for making the slightest noise?
The sonar supervisor stiffened. “Torpedo in the water!”
Oh stars. At least the humans had picked up a telltale propulsion system from the torpedo, but that meant the Farsul knew we were here. While there were other UN submarines en route, none were flanking us or backing us up. The predators better have some insane defensive tactics, or we would wind up in a million pieces. I didn’t like the prospect of my lungs being crushed.
“Brace yourselves for inbound munitions!” Captain Fournier growled into a microphone. “Return fire toward the source.”
The Farsul submarine was patrolling just shy of the Archives base, and wasn’t, to our knowledge, joined by any comrades. While taking immediate defensive steps, the Terrans dubiously focused on getting their own torpedo into the water. Skepticism marked itself on my face, but Onso leapt to the predators’ defense. The Yotul claimed this counterstrike was to prevent the enemy from firing again. I could feel my heart crawl into my throat, as our own projectile was spit back with haste.
Our submarine reoriented itself in the opposite direction, away from the base, and fled at maximum speed. The incoming torpedo had the edge in speed, so it seemed futile to run away. I guessed that the munition had limited fuel; even so, its tank wouldn’t run dry quick enough. We dove as close to the seafloor as we could risk, and the sharp descent almost made me tumble down the bridge.
The Farsul’s torpedo was gaining ground, threatening to sink us. Captain Fournier, just like his counterparts in the stars, was cool under pressure; he waited for the munitions to lock onto us. The bearded leader shouted for a sonar decoy to be deployed. As the deceitful device jetted away, I squinted for clues on nearby screens. Per Onso, it unleashed a cloak of bubbles and jamming frequencies, scrambling the missile’s sonar-seeking systems.
“Did it w-work?” I wrapped my claws around Carlos’ arm with the bear tattoo, remembering not to cling to Samantha again. “I hate water. I’ll take death by vacuum any day.”
Carlos squeezed my paw awkwardly. “I don’t know if it worked. We always hope for the best, but no combat situation is a guarantee. Just breathe, buddy.”
Our submersible attempted to skirt the torpedo’s search area, while it was hung up on the false targets our decoy provided. We veered well off to the side, and ensured absolute silence. The
Deep Core looped back around, tiptoeing past the range we’d been chased from. There was no sign of an inbound contact following us. I realized we had successfully fooled the munition’s homing logic; I released Carlos’ arm at last.
Perhaps it had been wise of the Terrans to impart a shot back. Our foes were too preoccupied to send more trouble our way; one torpedo was enough. Those thoughts reminded me that we had taken offensive actions to counter theirs. Sniffing out the vessel that attempted to sink us was a priority. The torpedo we’d fired at the Farsul submarine hadn’t found its mark, as the enemy managed to pull nifty evasive maneuvers. However, their engines stirred up ample noise, with that sudden haste. Though they had avoided our first missile, I thought we had a clear target for our next round.
However, it was not necessary to expend another weapon on this nefarious submarine. The Terran torpedo missed its target the first time, but it doubled back for another pass without warning. On the second attempt, it struck true into the hapless Farsul’s frame; another hostile was ravaged in the blink of an eye. The humans had a perfect sinking score, proving themselves to be the more devious prowlers.
I doubted the Farsul expected anyone to get this close to their lair; all we had to do was poke at their defenses from a few angles. If this mop-up was representative of our disparate power, the other UN submarines must be closing in on the base too. In space, losses and hardships could be inflicted upon the predators. However, land and sea appeared to be their chief dominion, where their exceptional talents put them miles ahead of the competition.
The oceanic path to the Farsul Archives had been cleared, and soon, humanity might begin to reclaim the actual history of the multitude of Federation species.

2023.06.07 16:33 coolnavigator Light vs Darkness
I'm going to start this post by asking a series of rhetorical questions, then diving into the meat of what I want to say.
- What is the secret of the master mason? Darkness.
- What is the secret of the black cube (or Saturn)? It represents the measure of the world, or the body, or the holy grail, where the spirit resides.
- What is Satan or Saturn? The god of the body.
- What is the body? The lower form. The lower intellect. The lesser.
- What are materialists? People who worship the lower form, who deny the upper form.
- What are Satanists? Materialists.
- What are 'dark priests'? Materialists, Satanists.
- What is "Illuminati"? People who "illumine".
- What is "Lucifer"? The god who brings light.
- What is "Prometheus"? The god who brings fire.
- What is light? What is fire? Intelligence.
- What symbol does Jesus Christ, Buddha, Dionysus, Apollo, Bacchus, and many others represent? What we call "christ consciousness", where "christ" or "cristos" means "annointed oil". What is the annointed oil? It is the flowing over of neurons and hormones in your body that can be achieved by avoiding the pleasures of the body, which is to "avoid Satan". Not because "satan" in these myths/teachings is objectively bad (although those who preach him as the one true god are definitely bad), but because the path of the body is destructive of the process of enlightening your mind. No one is suggesting you have to always practice this. It's a door you have to go through, to experience and learn from. Truths are remembered, not forgotten.
- Why do people want to bring these symbols to us? To raise our level of consciousness.
Now, I hope I have explained this concept very clearly. People get very confused about Satan and Lucifer. They think these symbols represent the same thing. They do not. They are opposites. There are people in this world who support light and people in this world who support darkness. The people who support darkness are the baddies. Also, the people who support false light are the baddies too.
Now, I want to explain one other point of history which may be illustrative of the confusing nature of exoteric symbolism and why you cannot rely on merely translating symbols to decide who is who. You have to judge by actions, not mere symbols.
The Illuminati was a psyop by the people of the light. They were tricking the people of darkness to believe that they were on the same side. This was part of the American Revolution. Spymasters George Washington and Ben Franklin infiltrated the British Freemasonic circles and ostensibly created another Freemasonic group which they called the Illuminati, so that when the American Revolution kicked off, the British people believed it was their own design. They made it appear like any other "color revolution" or "Young _" group staging a fake revolution to cause chaos and weaken dissidents. This happens all over the world, over and over again through history. It's happening in the present day with our work in Ukraine and the Middle East, and it was happening in the 1800s all over Europe with the "Young _" groups (eg Young Turks).
So, American loyalists, who truly despised the crown and the old guard aristocrats (and this is verifiable by judging the actions of the founders and the system they set up), pretended to be among the old dark priests of the British/Catholic Freemasonic brotherhoods, hence giving time and space for the American Revolution to actually succeed. Early on, British soldiers did not assassinate the American generals/leaders because there is a sacred code in these brotherhoods to not kill fellow members. By the time the British realized the revolution was real and this was all a facade, America was already well on its way to victory.
If you would like to read further on this topic, I suggest How the Nation Was Won by H Graham Lowry and Treason in America by Anton Chaitkin for starters. You will have to dig a bit farther for some conclusions I've made above, but you will understand this logic once you understand the complexities of these groups.
I wanted to make this post primarily to get people to stop saying that the Illuminati is the cabal running the world. It's completely fictitious, but the dark priests love to keep the lie going because it distances truthseekers from understanding the truth. They love it when people think Lucifer is evil, or when Lucifer is portrayed in an evil light (Lucifer is NOT Satan). They love it when people turn to superstition and believe the concept of god lies outside of themselves. They love all of these things because they are then able to control your entire reality through "magic", which is simply the ability to manipulate people's subjective awareness of reality, through psychological operations, drugs, sex influence, and other means. All nasty tricks, but none of them so enormously complicated that you couldn't understand them if the method was simply revealed to you. That's how all magic works: it only seems impossible when you don't know the trick.
At the very heart of the turnings of world politics/government, it is light vs darkness. Actual, truthful expressions of light are the good, and all darkness and false expressions of light are the bad.
Sidenote: no one who self-identifies with the Illuminati is actually good, to be clear. They are tricked by the "false light" of the dark priests who protect their deepest secrets for only the highest of their initiates, wherein they reveal that darkness is at the top of their ladder, not light. But still, labeling these people "Illuminati" is wrong in the same way that labeling the world elite as Scientologists is wrong. It's a symbol of a lower rung that the elite use to control their minions. If these so-called "Illuminati" that you see in music and film were actually illumined, they would not be sharing Satanic images and ideas. They would be sharing ideas of raising your level of consciousness. They don't. The self-claimed Illuminati are materialists and thus not keeping to the true symbols of which they claim to represent.

2023.06.07 16:28 coolnavigator Light vs Darkness
