2023.06.07 17:13 remog /r/Drupal will be going dark from June 12-14 in protest against Reddit's API changes which kill 3rd party apps.
Don't Let Reddit Kill 3rd Party Apps!
As advocates for Open Source and open technologies, these changes affect us all and represent a disturbing trend across various services and companies across the web. This is why I feel
Drupal should join in taking this stand.
The remainder of this is taken from the post on
Save3rdPartyApps:
What's going on?
A recent Reddit policy change threatens to kill many beloved third-party mobile apps, making a great many quality-of-life features not seen in the official mobile app permanently inaccessible to users. This change also effectively kills all bots and tools used by Moderators and communities across reddit.
On May 31, 2023, Reddit announced they were raising the price to make calls to their API from being free to a level that will kill every third party app on Reddit, from Apollo to Reddit is Fun to Narwhal to BaconReader.
Even if you're not a mobile user and don't use any of those apps, this is a step toward killing other ways of customising Reddit, such as Reddit Enhancement Suite or the use of the old.reddit.com desktop interface .
This isn't only a problem on the user level: many subreddit moderators depend on tools only available outside the official app to keep their communities on-topic and spam-free.
What's the plan?
On June 12th, many subreddits will be going dark to protest this policy. Some will return after 48 hours: others will go away permanently unless the issue is adequately addressed, since many moderators aren't able to put in the work they do with the poor tools available through the official app. This isn't something any of us do lightly: we do what we do because we love Reddit, and we truly believe this change will make it impossible to keep doing what we love.
The two-day blackout isn't the goal, and it isn't the end. Should things reach the 14th with no sign of Reddit choosing to fix what they've broken, we'll use the community and buzz we've built between then and now as a tool for further action.
What can you do?
Complain. Message the mods of
reddit.com, who are the admins of the site: message
reddit: submit a support request: comment in relevant threads on
reddit, such as this one, leave a negative review on their official iOS or Android app- and sign your username in support to this post.
Spread the word. Rabble-rouse on related subreddits. Meme it up, make it spicy. Bitch about it to your cat. Suggest anyone you know who moderates a subreddit join us at our sister sub at
ModCoord - but please don't pester mods you don't know by simply spamming their modmail.
Boycott and spread the word...to Reddit's competition! Stay off Reddit entirely on June 12th through the 13th- instead, take to your favorite non-Reddit platform of choice and make some noise in support!
Don't be a jerk. As upsetting this may be, threats, profanity and vandalism will be worse than useless in getting people on our side. Please make every effort to be as restrained, polite, reasonable and law-abiding as possible. This includes not harassing moderators of subreddits who have chosen not to take part: no one likes a missionary, a used-car salesman, or a flame warrior.

/cscareerquestions will go dark on June 12 for at least a week in protest of Reddit's API changes that will kill third party apps, such as Apollo, RIF, and others. We will start with a week but may extend later on. We want to balance our protest with the needs of the community.
I wanted to cross-post this but ironically Reddit's cross-posting is broken at the moment.

2023.06.07 17:05 kjmci /r/CitiesSkylinesModding will be going dark from June 12th in protest against Reddit's API changes
Hello, Mayors and Modders
Starting at 00:01 UTC on Monday 12/06/2023,
/CitiesSkylinesModding will be "going dark" for at least 48-hours. This means we will set the subreddit to private and you will not be able to access it, view posts, or add comments.
y tho?!
This is part of a
broad-ranging protest against Reddit's plans to implement prohibitive API costs for 3rd-party apps and services - in some cases expecting app developers to pay
20x more per user than Reddit themselves earn.
Although you may not personally rely on these apps and services (we know that around 45% of our members use the first-party Reddit iOS and Android apps), they're critical to the way you and others experience Reddit:
y us?
When considering whether to participate in this action, the moderation team reflected on the nature of the Cities: Skylines community. Specifically, we were reminded of the creativity and ingenuity on display every single day which has been enabled by embracing open software principles and a spirit of collaboration.
Imagine for a moment:
- How limited the modding and asset-creation scene would be if Colossal Order made access to the editors a paid-for feature?
- What the game would be like if content creators had to pay Steam a fee for every 100 downloads of their mods or assets?
- If the game would have given rise to so many popular YouTube creators (some with millions of subscribers) if Paradox required a cut of their revenue?
- How much longer our games would've been broken after each update if the modding community preferred to "close-source" their mods, making it impossible for new modders to take over and patch abandoned mods?
- Whether the original game would've had such enduring popularity to warrant the creation of a sequel if the situations above had occurred?
Our game and community has been made so much richer as a result of the principles of fair and open access, so it feels right that we support activity to promote those same values for Reddit itself.
wat now?
There is
an open letter you may wish to read and sign.
Other actions you can take:
- Email Reddit or create a support ticket to communicate your opposition to their proposed modifications.
- Complain. Message the mods of /reddit.com, who are the admins of the site: message reddit: submit a support request: comment in relevant threads on /reddit, such as this one.
- Spread the word. Rabble-rouse on related subreddits. Meme it up, make it spicy. Bitch about it to your cat. Suggest anyone you know who moderates a subreddit join /ModCoord - but please don't pester mods you don't know by simply spamming their modmail.
- Show your support by participating in the Reddit boycott (especially by not using the Reddit iOS and Android apps) starting on the 12th of June.

2023.06.07 17:02 Aqua-Regis Subreddit Blackout - June 12th: Save Third Party Apps
Meep morp its time for a blackout
Yes as some have asked, the mods for
LabourUK have decided we will be joining the
subreddit blackout starting June 12th and ending June 14th.
For those of you who mostly use reddit via a browser or the official app and are out of the loop, reddit has planned some changes for its API availability and pricing, which will effectively kill the third party app space.
Another, lesser known use of the API has been by academics, who have previously used this access to understand foreign interference campaigns, to generating tools to help with content moderation. The current situation risks cutting them off too.
Why should you care if you dont use a third party app yourself? Because this will make life difficult for a lot of people such as moderators who rely on third party tools (or just a UI that doesn't suck to moderate with) but perhaps more importantly will also have a negative effect on people who rely on these apps for better accessibility options.
What can you do? - Complain. Message the mods of /reddit.com, who are the admins of the site: message reddit: submit a support request: comment in relevant threads on /reddit, such as this one, leave a negative review on their official iOS or Android app and add your voices to discussion threads about this change, both here and on the original blackout thread.

2023.06.07 16:59 absolutehelmet67 [Landlord NY] Price Negotiation
I purchased my first duplex from an old landlord. I was happy with the price and it’s worked out great so far. He let me know that he’ll contact me when he decides to sell to give me a bit of priority. Obviously some incentive in this for both parties. No realtor fees for him, pretty straight forward and it works out for me since the rental market is competitive where I live. He recently contacted me letting me know the address and time frame that he’d be selling a few properties and there’s one I’m particularly interested in that he’s selling early next year. He didn’t list a price though. It’s far away so hard to know how the market will be but should I ask him for a ballpark or give him an offer?
Details: -City did a reassessment of all properties for 2023 and assessed it at 75K -relator sites asses to at 80K - he purchased it in 2020 for 59K -2 units

- Complain. Message the mods of reddit.com, who are the admins of the site: message reddit: submit a support request: comment in relevant threads on reddit, such as this one, leave a negative review on their official iOS or Android app- and sign your username in support to this post.
- Spread the word. Rabble-rouse on related subreddits. Meme it up, make it spicy. Bitch about it to your cat. Suggest anyone you know who moderates a subreddit join us at our sister sub at ModCoord- but please don't pester mods you don't know by simply spamming their modmail.
- Boycott and spread the word...to Reddit's competition! Stay off Reddit entirely on June 12th through the 13th- instead, take to your favorite non-Reddit platform of choice and make some noise in support!
- Don't be a jerk. As upsetting this may be, threats, profanity and vandalism will be worse than useless in getting people on our side. Please make every effort to be as restrained, polite, reasonable and law-abiding as possible.
Some thoughts as it pertains to our sub:
Yes, I know the scamphlet will allegedly be released during that time, but if history has taught us anything, this will be just another case of Kitty Sanchez repeatedly flashing Michael Bluth and screaming “this is the LAST time, Michael!” - there probably isn’t going to be anything released on the 12 (yesterday, wasn’t she asking people to submit their shipping address by the 16?). I understand not everyone might want to have the sub dark because of that.
If I can add another thought, if hell freezes over and she actually does drop the “book” of 100 pages and 59 chapters on the 12, it might be a nice coincidence that we’re offline. At this point we’re the largest group by far that’s giving her any type of attention, and you know she’ll be checking here obsessively that day. And there’s nothing she loves more than attention. We can always take screenshots and post them after the protest. :)
Anyway, what does everyone else think?

2023.06.07 16:58 JustBoatTrash The Housing Market Is Tilting in Favor of Renters
https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2023-06-07/housing-market-is-beginning-to-tilt-in-favor-of-renters The US housing story of 2023 is one of two markets moving in different directions. For buyers, dwindling supply and a modest uptick in demand has meant home prices are on the rise again , even with 30-year mortgage rates hovering around 7%. The rental market is trending in the opposite direction, with rising vacancy rates as new apartment buildings hit the market and put downward pressure on rents - at least in metros where there's been a lot of construction in recent years.
This is creating a short-term opportunity for frustrated would-be homebuyers, especially in metro areas that have seen the most construction. In places such as Nashville, Charlotte and Austin, where rent growth is sluggish and lots more supply will be coming on line, these folks can get a great deal on a new apartment now and hope the market for homebuyers is better next year.
Construction Boom
The number of apartment units under development is closing in on 1 million, topping the record set in 1973
Recent trends suggest the divergence between the two markets will continue for several month, peaking in the third quarter. That’s when the inventory of homes for sale is likely to be down on a year-over-year basis and the rental market potentially suffering with a national vacancy rate higher than at the peak of the pandemic and asking rents that may be down on a year-over-year basis.
Dwindling supply and continued labor market strength should support home prices, while a couple of factors should weigh on apartment rents. The first is that vacancy rates continue to rise at a rapid rate, according to online marketplace Apartment List. Vacancy rates typically stabilize before rents do, and the peak in vacancies might not occur until the first half of 2024. Second, the rental market is a seasonal business, with lease signings slowing during the winter months. Any landlord heading into winter with an excess of vacant units will face the prospect of those units staying vacant until spring, not generating any revenue. This may lead landlords to offer incentives this fall to mitigate that possibility.
That means at least some would-be homebuyers have a compelling option to consider. Buying a house is currently very unaffordable on any historical metric, and the lack of inventory only seems to get worse. Whereas in markets where a lot of apartments are being built it's getting increasingly common to see incentives such as one to two months of free rent for new tenants, and my view is incentives will be even greater six months from now. If there were ever a time to consider renting rather than buying, it's now.
One caveat for buyers is that while they might have an easier time waiting a year, there’s not likely to be a glut of newly built supply like in the rental market. Also, employee incomes continue to rise, increasing purchasing power, and millennials continue to age into their prime home-buying years. According to Redfin, the average monthly payment that homebuyers are taking on has risen 15% over the past year to a record, due to some combination of home values holding up and higher interest rates.
So, for people deciding whether they should buy or continue renting for another year, the good news is that the apartment market is generally becoming more favorable and should continue that way for at least a few quarters. We could even see some pandemic-type deals toward the end of this year as landlords decide between eating the costs of rising vacancies and offering sweetheart deals to lure new tenants. The bad news is that while the math on buying is bad at the moment, it's not clear when or even if it will get better. We could easily be in the same situation a year from now as we are now -- still not very much inventory, mortgage rates still around 7% and home prices up another 5%.

2023.06.07 16:55 macmoosie This subreddit will be joining in on the June 12th-14th protest of Reddit's API changes that will essentially kill all 3rd party Reddit apps.
What's going on?
A recent Reddit policy change threatens to kill many beloved third-party mobile apps, making a great many quality-of-life features not seen in the official mobile app permanently inaccessible to users.
On May 31, 2023, Reddit announced they were raising the price to make calls to their API from being free to a level that will kill every third party app on Reddit, from Apollo to Reddit is Fun to Narwhal to BaconReader.
Even if you're not a mobile user and don't use any of those apps, this is a step toward killing other ways of customizing Reddit, such as Reddit Enhancement Suite or the use of the old.reddit.com desktop interface .
This isn't only a problem on the user level: many subreddit moderators depend on tools only available outside the official app to keep their communities on-topic and spam-free.
What's the plan?
