Hi managers, looking for compassionate advice.
I'm recently sober. I was a high-functioning alcoholic and very heavy drinker for over a decade, but recently I had bloodwork results that were not good—very high liver enzymes—and doctor has instructed me to stop drinking.
I work for a performing arts organization, which I'm noting because alcohol at my workplace isn't 100% completely avoidable: it's served at intermissions to patrons, it's served at special events for VIPs. But my role is in marketing, not customer service, so I don't have to physically handle it. But, it's around, and that's not going to change.
However, outside of that, there is very much a drinking culture amongst my colleagues. A few recent examples off the top of my head:

We finalized a major milestone in February, and my colleague (senior to me, but not my boss) poured a huge pour of whiskey for me and her to celebrate, and handed me the glass. It was about 2pm, we were onsite in the office. I was still drinking at the time, so I took the drink, and consented to it (and enjoyed it!).
Same colleague popped into my office recently at 11:50am, half-joking about a lot of half-empty wine bottles leftover from an event the night prior, and if anyone would like a drink. My direct manager half-kiddingly scolded her that it wasn't even past noon yet, and the typical "5 o'clock somewhere" jokes ensued. I didn't see alcohol consumed and I didn't partake, but others may have.
Our Executive Director (the big cheese, two levels up from me) constantly talks about needing or wanting a drink. There are lots of jokes and constant commentary about needing a "Don Draper desk" a la the television show Mad Men, where whiskey is readily available.
Generally, wine is around, and it's become a recent ritual to finish a long night after a live event drinking wine together, while still onsite in the workplace.

I am quite in control and at peace with my sobriety: once my mind is made up it's made up, and I can say without a sliver of doubt that I'm not the kind of recovering alcoholic who caves and indulges if alcohol is offered, or around. I am perfectly comfortable and confident saying "no thanks" or "not today". In other words, it's not actively/adversely impacting my attempt at sobriety.
However, I recently had a session with my therapist, where I talked about and unpacked why and where and how I drink. It led to work, and I shared some of the above anecdotes, and she was completely aghast. She strongly recommended that my direct manager should be reprimanding this behaviour (booze at work), and implored me to have a very honest conversation with my manager to enforce a no booze, and no joking about booze, policy.
Which... brings me here.
I don't know what to do, but I can't stop thinking about it. On one hand, other people drinking doesn't bother me, and booze at work is pretty normalized for me, for better or for worse (e.g. my last job was with a talent agency, and day drinking/wining and dining clients was "just the thing"), and as said I'm not tempted. I worry that if I were to have a talk with manager and say that I'm a recovering alcoholic and that booze can't be around, that this will reflect badly on me: that it will come across like I'm weak, struggling, an addict, and that my standing/reputation might suffer as a result. At the same time my therapist isn't wrong, and I'm now thinking (and overthinking) about other colleagues who might be silently struggling, or pregnant, or whatever other reason they might be avoiding alcohol, and might also feel discomfort about the atmosphere.

At San Diego Comic-Con in July, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson had other people raising eyebrows when he said that his long-awaited superhero debut in Black Adam would be the beginning of “a new era” for the DC Extended Universe naturally followed: What did he mean? And what would that kind of reset mean for the remainder of DCEU's roster, including Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, the rest of the Justice League, Suicide Squad, Shazam and so on.As

Black Adam neared theaters, though, Johnson clarified that statement in a recent sit-down with Yahoo Entertainment (watch above).

There's nothing so wrong with “Black Adam” that it should be avoided, but nothing—besides the appealing presence of Dwayne Johnson—that makes it worth rushing out to see. spectacles that have more or less taken over studio filmmaking, but it accumulates the genre's—and the business's—bad habits into a single two- hour-plus package, and only hints at the format's occasional pleasures. “Black Adam” feels like a place-filler for a movie that's remaining to be made, but, in its bare and shrugged-off sufficiency, it does one positive thing that, if nothing else, at least accounts for its success: for

Black Adam has finally ended the box office blues. It will be a Black Adam call, but based on the estimates, the year's biggest opener remains Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness with its $187 million start. Nonetheless, Wakanda Forever's $180 million opening is a huge one, being the biggest ever for the month of November (beating the $158 million of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire), the second biggest of the year, and the 13th biggest of all time (though it could go up or down a few slots once the actuals come out). It led an overall weekend box office of $208 million, which is the fourth biggest of the year and the biggest by a long shot of the past four months, with no other weekend since July 8 -10 even going above $133 million. This isn't the $202 million opening that we saw from Black Panther in February 2018, nor should we expect the amazing legs that were able to get that film to an astonishing $700 million. With that said, expect it to perform strongly throughout the holiday season, likely repeating the five-weekend number-one streak that the first film had, and it shouldn't have any trouble becoming the second-highest-grossing film of the year so far, beating the $411 million cume of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The audience response is strong, with the A CinemaScore falling below the first film's A+ but bouncing back from the B+'s earned by Doctor Strange 2 and Thor: Love and Thunder, which ranked among the worst for the MCU. an improvement over the recent franchise installations, with the aforementioned films coming in at 74% and 64% respectively on Rotten Tomatoes, both at the lower end for Marvel films, while Wakanda Forever's 84% is Black Adamr to franchise norms, though not meeting the high bar set by the first Black Panther' s 96%. The sequel opened to $150 million internationally, which Disney reports is 4% ahead of the first film when comparing like for likes at current exchange rates. Overall, the global cume comes to $330 million. Can it become the year's third film to make it past $1 billion worldwide despite China and Russia, which made up around $124 million of the first film's $682 million international box office, being out of play? It may be tough, but it's not impossible. Legging out past $500 million is plausible on the domestic front (that would be a multiplier of at least 2.7), and another $500 million abroad would be a drop of around $58 million from the original after excluding the two MIA markets. It'd be another story if audiences didn't love the film, but the positive reception suggests that Wakanda Forever will outperform the legs on this year's earlier MCU titles (Multiverse of Madness and Love and Thunder had multipliers of 2.2 and 2.3 respectively).

As for the rest of the box office, there's little to get excited about, with nothing else grossing above $10 million as Hollywood shied away from releasing anything significant not just this weekend but also over the previous two weekends. When Black Panther opened in 2018, there was no counterprogramming that opened the same weekend, but Peter Rabbit and Fifty Shades Freed were in their second weekends and took second and third with $17.5 million and $17.3 million respectively. That weekend had an overall cume of $287 million compared to $208 million this weekend Take away the $22 million gap between the two Black Panther films and there's still a $57 million gap between the two weekends. The difference may not feel that large when a mega blockbuster is propping up the grosses, but the contrast is harsher when the mid-level films are the entire box office as we saw in recent months. Black Adam, which is the biggest grosser of the rough post-summer, pre-Wakanda Forever season, came in second with just $8.6 million. Despite the blockbuster competition that arrived in its fourth weekend, the numbers didn't totally collapse, dropping 53 % for a cume of $151 million. Worldwide it is at $352 million, which isn't a great cume as the grosses start to wind down considering its $200 million budget. Still, it's the biggest of any film since Thor: Love and Thunder, though Wakanda Forever will overtake it any day now. Black Adam came in third place in its fourth weekend, down 29% with $6.1 million, emerging as one of the season's most durable grasses and one of the year's few bright spots when it comes to films for adults. The domestic cume is $56.5 million Fourth place went to Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile, which had a negligible drop of 5% for a $3.2 million sixth weekend and $40.8 million cume., in fact ) , which isn't surprising considering it's the only family film on the market, and it's Black Adam to grossing four times it's $11.4 million opening. Still, the $72.6 million worldwide cume is soft given the $50 million budget, though a number of international markets have yet to open. Finishing up the top five is Smile, which had its biggest weekend drop yet, falling 42% for a $2.3 million seventh weekend. Of course, that's no reason to frown for the horror film, which has a domestic cume of $103 million and a global cume of $ 210 million from a budget of just $20 million. The one new specialty title of note comes from a filmmaker we don't typically associate with the specialty box office: Steven Spielberg. The Beard's semi-autobiographical family drama Black Adam opened in four theaters in New York and Los Angeles to $160k, a $40k average. The film expands to 600 theaters the day before Thanksgiving, and it has the potential to break out in a way that none of the other season's awards contenders have. We're also seeing very solid numbers from Black Adam, which grossed $1.7 million this weekend for a seventh-place finish, bringing its cume to $5.8 million.

My family unit is essentially five people, myself, a 30 year old man, my older sister 35, our biological father, our younger step sister, 19, and our step mother.
I have issues with my older sister. Every time we're together there's inevitably a conversation that leaves me feeling horrible. I feel insane, like some part of me is convinced that I'm imagining it, or overreacting, ruining everything for everyone.
The most recent situation went like this, at a family gathering the day after a wedding, with my partner, a wonderful supportive person, my older sister talked to me about my relationship with a semi estranged biological mother that I have worked to repair a lot of damage from over a decade and a half from a divorce. Her tone was accusatory, the conversation had started from a comment I had made about how genuinely I had enjoyed time feeding animals on my mom's farm, and how I was excited to bring my partner along someday.
she starts with a "mom thinks you hate her", bad enough on it's own, I reply, slightly stammering, like someone deeply unprepared for the line of questioning I was heading into "I don't think mom thinks I hate her, I know I don't visit enough but-"
"then why don't you visit more, she thinks you hate her"
"I know I should, it's just a really, really, long bus ride and-"
"why don't you rent a car? You're an adult"
I am an adult, we had just spoken earlier, as a family several hours ago, about my difficulty finding a job after being laid off in January. She has labeled me as a hypocrite: How can a socialist have a new phone? I have never insulted her profession, lifestyle, or income. I had mentioned a savings account I could live off of, money I had been saving for years to maybe someday buy a place to live. Privately I ask myself if hearing this set my sister off, or just knowing that I spoke positively of Mom. Privately I tell myself I should’ve known this would happen, and it is my fault for stepping onto the landmine that takes my leg. My family would agree.
"It's still a long drive. I honestly wish Mom would visit sometimes"
"It's only 2 hours, that's not a long drive and you're making excuses"
"2 hours is a long drive for m-"
"No it isn't"
My expression changes. After a shockingly, inappropriately, short amount of time, sooner than I could say a word, my sister immediately says "what? What are you glaring at me for?" And offers a vaguely remembered taunt about me being angry. My sister has a decidedly aggressive manner of speaking, a tone which causes many sentences to be spit with a venom that says "you ruin everything", and a speed that very rarely allows anyone else to finish a sentence. Family members claim she maybe cannot help this, I am not sure I agree. My partner has witnessed all this and is aghast, stunned at the swiftness of the verbal pummeling I’ve taken.
My partner and I decide I need to go outside and get some air. As I leave, I can hear my older sister offer an explanation to my step mother "he just gets really mad at me all the sudden".
Mom visits me about once a year, I visit her once or twice a year, usually overnight. This is more contact than we've had in the past. I talk to my Mom, she doesn't think I hate her. We have less issues than ever, I value my relationship with her so much as I get older, taking my original family less for granted, and excitedly sharing the new music I create with Mom. She's not the biggest fan of the genre, but her appreciation is fun. It's still a sore spot, for who wouldn't it be? I can't functionally imagine a situation in which my sister, or anyone, doesn't know this will make me, or anyone, emotional. In fact, I think it transcends a personal emotional effect: this is rude. It's purpose is to inflict pain. If this is the story of a repeating cycle, one that always starts the same way is it foolish to think this?
Would I even feel the same way about this if it was a one off situation? It's impossible for me to imagine one single instance of conflict, the full picture a pointillism of antagonization. I could offer a hundred of these conversations up for observation, it would not make a difference, in all of them she would simply be confused. "He just doesn't like me" she mused "for no reason." I am so aware of my actions, so deeply committed to kindness. Outside of this small sample size, it is the first trait about myself many people would point to. In a survey, my family and the outside world would have completely opposing views of me. This dissonance causes so much unpleasantness, a tear in the fabric of conscious.
I walk outside into a forlorn state, a fortune teller with a gun to their head, Nostradamus in khakis, and I detail to my partner the events that will transpire the rest of the weekend. "I'll try really hard to bottle this up", I tell her, "but whatever happens: this is my fault". My partner asks why I don't just talk to my parents about it more. "It doesn't matter, the problem is me becoming emotional." My partner is in disbelief, unable to accept anyone could repeatedly witness these events and feel this way, I am assured “I cannot fucking imagine anyone in my family treating my little brother this way.” I believe her. I look down and say "Negative peace" to the ground, my sentences coming in partial fragments.
I couldn't speak, and sitting outside the gathering I see my step mom. She asks what's wrong, I reply, she says "I see" and goes back into the party. Later on, it torments me that I tried to share this with her and neither her, nor her daughter who I consider very close, could talk to me. Myself and my partner shut ourselves off from the group, a fact that will be thrown into my face like dynamite, choosing to hang out in a bedroom. No one has acknowledged any event to me, choosing instead to make a conscious decision to enjoy life with my older sister, who has turned on a dime into politeness and charm with our shared family. Knock on my door. All of them must know about the event by now, I’ve told my step mother and it's happened before, so many times. It’ll always happen, what good is me explaining it again? Accused of "closing them off" I maintain: I was just down the hall. It wouldn't have made a difference, my step mother works hard to remain impartial.
I felt like I could see the future. What always happens, happening again. Eventually I'll talk to my father. I can't help it, it's very hard to contain, her words can cut me so deep. And every time he acts like I'm a rude jerk for being upset. I don't need him to intervene, I've told him this when I apologize for being upset, I would be so helped by even condolence. I've been begging at this altar of paternal affection, I'm here to tell you: there is no God.
During a family dinner a year or more ago, the five of us, my sister complained about anxiety symptoms and I offered a suggestion: a combination therapy and anti anxiety prescription. I'm not a doctor: I was sharing it along with the information that it had worked for me, the first time I had told my parents I had even done therapy, frowned upon by our folks, I thought this offering of information would help ease her fears about seeking treatment.
She responds, loudly and in tears "I don't need therapy, I don't have anxiety like you, I'm autistic you fucking asshole"
She has used "autism" as a get out jail free card many times. Several members of my family are, some more severe than others. My cousins are deeply affected, most of the time choosing not to speak although when they do they can be very sweet. Her diagnosis came much more recently, a response to her seeking out a doctor after self diagnosing herself from the internet. The others are not as cruel, and I have never heard it used as a defense.
Growing up I had my own issues with mental health, I used to frequently become so terrified I'd vomit at different triggers. Planes, boats, a school bus, barfing away in near constant terror. Unable to peacefully sleep for weeks every time I learn something new, scared my appendix will burst and I'll die, scared my tonsils will fall down my throat and I'll die, I beg my parents to take me to have them removed. Not a normal thing, I now realize, I wonder if it matters. Diagnosed by a doctor with Generalized Panic disorder, ironically many, many years before my older sister would discover the hit and run potential of "you can't blame me, I'm autistic."
She cries and goes upstairs, the dinner continues silently. I ask my father if he thinks that reaction was warranted and he has little response.
He claims he did not hear it. A bold excuse, maybe he had a mouthful so I try to jog his memory. I feel like a psycho, being forced to detail a conversation that is still actively happening, that we were all a part of. After I tell him about the part where she calls me a fucking asshole, he demurs, and asks why I thought that wouldn't make her angry. I explain again, now for the third time, about how I only recommended she could try something based on a deeply personal experience that I also had, adding on this time an explanation about how the shared process of opening up typically inspires trust and brings people together. I do not feel this needs to be explained, but I gave it a try. I am emotional, upset, not hysterical, "I don't know, you're being dramatic." He says "Besides, I don't know what you want me to do."
I don't know what you want me to do. I've heard that sentence a hundred times, he simply cannot imagine "doing" anything, no action, no word, not a thought of participation into the conflict that has dominated every family event since time memoriam. "Try something" I say every time, like a wind up toy. The solution can not come from me, because then he can do it sarcastically. It's happened before. Words of comfort delivered with the trademark eye roll, a pat on the back given behind a snicker. I have told him this, how a simple "I'm sorry about that and I don't think you deserved it.'' would be an entire world.
This most recent time, after the conversation about our mother, I found myself in such a depression, I didn't speak for the rest of the day and just kept my head down in my room. Later I am informed this is offensive behavior.
The next morning when she was out I said something, I could feel my blood pressure rise and my body tense as it almost unwillingly slipped out of my mouth.
"[Sister] lectured me about mom"
My father immediately and angrily comes to her defense with a “You shut yourself off!” always playing the hero for his daughter, the problem is my reaction. The eye roll I received made me want to die. Complete rejection, disappointment in a look. He immediately assumes the offensive “You were in your room all day!” he says angrily, "You do this every time”. He looks appalled, enraged even. I was a door away, an act more offensive than anything, if you ask him, and he is unable, maybe unallowed, to knock on a door. Did my step mother inform him of our conversation? He was so prepared for this. “Why do you have to be all moody?" He sneers. But I've told him why, we had this conversation today, 8 weeks ago, 4 months ago, a year ago, 2 years ago. We have this same conversation, me and my father, and when he responds he always says "I don't know what you want me to do" I say it together with him, in unison, to make a point. It would be easy to just put an arm on my shoulder and say "I'm sorry that happened to you" but it never happens, the point is clear: I am being disruptive, and that itself is the problem.
My father is an Olympic champion of dismissal. On one family trip I was having a hard day, my older sister making many repeated small comments, criticizing looks, intelligence, morality and integrity. A hundred tiny knives. My parents, father and step mother, pull me aside to tell me that it's because in the conversation over breakfast I had referred to myself as the "athletic child" and that she had taken offense to that, she thinks I called her fat. In context, my comment earlier in the day was a joke to my family: "I got all the athletics genetics" I had jested in self deprecation, after all I had a couple semesters of high school tennis and I enjoy jogging. We were a trio of very nerdy kids, none of us able to throw or catch a ball. Two theater kids and a jazz guitarist. It's not a sore subject at all, historically, and it was said with appreciation, recognition of an obvious similarity we all share. I'm skinnier than my sister, we do not have the exact same build, but I didn't think she's overweight and I have never, ever, in my remembered life made a comment about it, disparaging or not. The idea of whether or not it's appropriate to torment someone all day for this slight is never raised, instead we pick apart what I said and I am left over explaining my comments again. Later, my sister shouts at me, red faced, as I am in line at an outdoor restroom "Owen! Move! You are always in the way!" My crime? There was a person behind me and I was taking too long to figure out the coin operated bathroom door (you have to put the coin in the slot. Still, rare to see, and not at all obvious to an American. I probably would've figured it out soon enough). Privately, away from the group but unfortunately with my father, I become upset by the days events and let slip a phrase in anger "shes been yelling at me since high school", a strategic blunder as my father can now pretend I'm actually angry about something that happened in high school, and he can successfully play it off as A, a ridiculous long time grudge that I'm being horrible and holding onto and B, denying knowledge of the situation. He tells me I should "save it for my therapist". It is extremely hard for me to square the reality that he thought I was simply out of blue cranky about something that happened a decade earlier, impossible to believe. "Save it for your therapist" became gasoline on a fire, and I will end up leaving this vacation early, constantly reduced to a single, lonely method of defense when allowed no other quarter: Fucking run.
The situation reminds me of another one, at a Thanksgiving just a year ago in which my step mothers brother is complaining about how raising the price of minimum wage will make burgers cost more, delivered as what seems to be a joke, although a miserable, unfunny one. I offered a reply "I guess you can afford to eat less burgers?'' I am told later, after I've left, totally unaware of any offense caused, he exclaimed a desire to punch me in my face for this comment. I do not think of this man as fat, he is larger than I am, significantly taller, with large hands. I think about how I too could get away with things if my physical size were imposing, impressive. I apologize profusely to my step mother, offering to call him up and formally apologize, told it's unnecessary. The idea of them all sitting in a circle, nodding politely at the punishment they think I deserve has haunted me since. I am never told of a word offered in my defense, despite again: I have never made a disparaging comment about anyone's weight. When I was a very young teen, I laughed at a magazine cover: “Addicted to food” it said. “How can you be addicted to food?” My twelve year old self sneered, “Dont you need it to live?” My step mother has struggled with weight and the face she made at hearing this, wordlessly and momentarily, was a memorable moment, a lesson a young child learned to not make comments like this. I never forget anything. I dropped many judgmental words from my vocabulary (words that were, unfortunately at the time, very common) decades ago because of her good influence. It does not matter. I am the thinnest dog in the pack, and so what I say is a slight to your unspoken insecurities.
In the most recent situation, my sister gets back and the conversation is dropped completely.
I am not addressed by any member of the rest of the group trip, besides my always loving partner, who my family talks past me to speak to about anything casual. They are stunned, I'm sure, that she's with me, an embarrassment. Privately she tells me that she finds their behavior, taking care to make sure she includes everyone, "repulsive", or perhaps "appalling" was the word, and it does bring me comfort. My dad waits a few hours to ask me a casual question, an attempt to paint over the previous conversation that opens me up from my quiet anger, his desire for me only extending to when I can behave. I respond in quiet, defeated, embarrassed, agonized, impotent anger "that's what you have to say to me?" And he resumes his previous eye roll. He takes the same dismissive voice "oh, you're still upset." He walks over to my partner and attempts to talk to her about something inconsequential, she is stunned at his flagrant mistreatment. That he would be bull onward, utterly unmoved by the days events as if determined to do this with the most collateral damage as possible: only as long as every wound goes to me.
I simply have lost the spirit of it. My stomach and back feel tremendous pain from the stress, I go nearly comatose. I can't eat, I can't hold onto water, and I spend the rest of the day shivering in the bedroom of an air bnb, being held by my supportive partner, waiting for our flight. I am in emotional ruin, I've explained it to them so many times I've lost count: every time this happens I feel the effects worse, like it kills a larger part of me. I want to stop dying.
My partner and I avoid talking to them. I have nothing to say. I look at my father like a stranger, so indifferent to anything, so willing to plead ignorance "how was I supposed to know you were being upset" He'll say.
We call an Uber and move to sneak away, heading to the airport to put distance between us and the show. I make a weak goodbye. "That's sad" my father says, barely looking up. Offered with no context, I am once again running away, ruining a family dynamic that without me is joyful, and bright. It has been made clear once again "bark, dog, you will only get hit." My older sister has said nothing to me since the incident. Is she gloating? Miserable? Secure in her victory or is it eating her alive? My younger sister too, says nothing, and I feel deep guilt about how much this hurts me. Is she too young? At 19, would I have blamed me?
My step mother steps up, finally ready to take action after years of silence, she makes her move. For a second I allow myself the optimism of thinking she’ll offer any word of solace or defense, but shes not the jury member I always thought, just another prosecutor. I ask her if she, as well, is mad at me. "You're a selfish, spoiled child who doesn't deserve any of this." my step mother says. Finally, we agree on at least one thing.
I have crossed the state in a historic blizzard to take care of this woman's pets after her original sitter, my younger step sisters boyfriend, had to suddenly leave them adrift mid vacation, with no one to feed the dog and cat, in the middle of a blizzard that delayed the trains by hours. As I wait for the thrice delayed train I play over my desire in my head: I will help them and they will know I’m good and then they will treat me differently. I do not speak of it.
They sit on a tropical island singing my praises, and it brings me nothing but internal conflict, how could you say these things and also feel the way that you show through your actions?. “You're the greatest, Im so proud of you” my step mother says from a tropical beach, my thermometer reads a cold negative 16 as I take out the dog. She later buys her daughter's boyfriend a car. They put a down payment on my older sister's house. I'm spoiled, they have done the pitiable charity of including me. I tell her I never want to hear from her again. You won't, she responds. I offer a final Fuck You, she returns it. I leave. She'll return to work next week to a classroom one of my truest and deepest friends has been taking care of, she had to ask me for his number. He describes her remedial teaching job as "incredibly easy, lighter schedule, less students, no lesson plan." compared to the usual substitution. Later, her own mother will take her to Indonesia, again. They go on trips to a tropical island every year, oftentimes more than one. I even got invited once.
I do not offer this sentence, full dissolution, lightly, nor commonly. It is not the chorus of these events, but a recently added and seriously taken bridge. I understand the pain of being disconnected from family all too well: my father's father has disowned him, and myself, in a letter addressed to "resident". It is an early, defining memory of mine, hard to place on a timeline, decades ago and a small child. I was too young to understand the reasons, if there were any, but I remember my rudeness was written. Problem child since birth, always and forever. Born “resident”.
The only times I've brought it up, separation, come after equally miserable conversations. It came from me as an offer, a plea that I have to, in any way I can, claw away from this misery that eats me alive. My step sister is young, and I feel deeply badly for her, but she is her mother's and has her own issues. She would list them off for you: "Depression, anxiety, PTSD from my father, gluten allergy." PTSD to my left, autism to my right. I am adrift in a sea of mental health experts with magnifying glasses pointed at my face in chorus "what the heck is up with you? I don't get it."
I've never felt I had the strength to follow through on it, for I am so needy. I despise my weakness immensely, that I crave their approval, the comfort of something I'm so held at arm's length away. The last communication with my father was a request that if we were ever going to speak again it would be with a licensed therapist present, but I'm cautious. Why arm them with that? It feels like something that would easily backfire, they’ve practiced their response to everything here so shockingly often I can recite the script. Do it in front of a total stranger, easy. And they’ll be given the vocabulary! “We’re sorry if you feel gaslit”, they’ll say, “but you're a spoiled child who doesn't deserve any of this.” They’ll then find factual inaccuracies, sputtering “technically, the island is almost a whole degree north of the tropics” anything that lets them believe the issue isn't the obvious, gigantic one that we can all see. Clipping the hairs around your brain tumor so you can do your bangs in the morning. Putting the turn signal on while your car hurtles off a cliff. A spoiled child, I wrack my brain to think of what they’ve given me other than reasons. The other way, the easy way out, seems so kind in comparison. My father, his father, the uncles, aunt, cousins who no longer contact. My father himself being the youngest child from the first marriage confuses me, did he feel like this? Is there am ugly streak in my DNA, reaching through time for generations? Will I too someday develop the same callus for someone that relies on me? His mother died, and his father remarried, and I remember thinking they were my grandparents in only my earliest memories.
I have in the past, unironically said my dad “Rules”, so good at being a homey it pains me more how much disinterest he has in being a father.
Now, writing this, here, it feels like a light. A chance for both parties to forgive, and heal, and not keep opening wounds and I think maybe I understand my grandfather a little. Maybe it's not unimaginable this would be for the best. I feel a giant void of longing in me for the family dog, a giant black Labrador named Link, who has had more love for me than most things on this earth. When I think about not ever seeing my family again, the thing that hurts most is never getting a chance to say goodbye to this beautiful, sweet creature. But other than that? The inside of me is greeted with a calm finality I have never known, and I feel the sweet release of sensing something is over.

hi all!
i’ve been working hard to clear up my skin over the last few months. nothing too crazy, just the usual whiteheads, blackheads, and left over redness when they subside. however, over the last couple of months, i keep getting pimples on my lip line. they’re tough to hide & it’s difficult to put pimple patches on them — it’s also an area of my face i haven’t really struggled with repeatedly until very recently.
i’m hoping to hear possible causes and solutions to this issue, especially from those who have dealt with it themselves.
i’ll drop my routine just in case anyone can identify a product with clogging qualities, but as far as i can tell, none of them should be too problematic. i have combo skin.

“I want the job,” I said.
It was two years ago, but I can vividly recall every aspect of that interview. The innocence of those four words. The stillness of the gallery. My befuddled reaction to Amy Andrews — the gallery owner whose questions unsettled me. Her composure never waned.
“Are you a spiritual man, Mr Hull?” Miss Andrews asked.
“Yes,” I answered. “Are we talking about the art? I can’t say I’ll be able to give philosophical or religious insights.”
“Don’t worry,” Miss Andrews replied, smiling. “I’m not trying to trip you up. In a way, my question doesrelate to the paintings, but perhaps not in the way you might expect.”
“I just want you to know that I was a police officer for many years before working as a security guard at the embassy,” I said. “I have plenty of references.”
The gallery owner raised a hand, smiling politely. “I’ve seen your CV. I promise that you don’t have to fight your corner, Mr Hull. I know you’re physically capable, but this job takes a toll on a mental level.”
I nodded my head, ignorantly believing that I understood her. “I know. I worked many solo night shifts at the embassy, but I can handle it.”
“That’s not what I mean,” She replied. “Do you know why my gallery exhibits a permanent display of my sister’s artwork?”
“To honour her memory,” I said. “I saw that news clip a couple of years ago about her admittance to the local psychiatric ward. Harper Andrews, right? I’m sorry. That must have been tough on your family.”
“Not as tough as Harper found it,” Miss Andrews replied. “Her artwork tells the story of her decline into sickness — not sickness of the mind, but sickness of the soul. She faced something and captured it in these paintings to protect humanity.”
Hearing her speak, I thought Amy seemed just as unwell as her sister, but I would soon learn that it was no delusion. Every night on the job is terrifying, but none so much as the first. And I’ll never forget Miss Andrews’ parting words as she walked out of the door.
“At night, the paintings must be closely guarded. Left unobserved for too long, they can… Well… Just make sure you keep watch.”
What is this? Night at the Museum? I mused.
No. Far worse than fiction.
The first hour of my shift was blissfully mundane. Basking in the blue glow of the gallery’s security lighting, a perturbing painting eyeballed me from the far wall. It depicted a lanky, pencil-thin man with frightfully long legs and a pair of white eyes which seemed to follow me around the room — as all freakish eyes in paintings do.
As I strolled around the gallery, following Miss Andrews’ strict rule of regularly observing the paintings, I took a closer look at the white-eyed man. I shivered at his janky jaw, which hung abnormally loosely. He wore jet-black trousers, but his monstrous, bony torso was shirtless, and he was the farthest a man could be from looking human. I stopped to read the plaque beneath the painting of the haunting figure.
The Exacter
The one who exacts torture. He longs to break free. He will devour mankind.
I hurried past the painting, reasonably certain that nobody would ever dream of stealing artwork so horrifying — no need to guard it too closely. But the gallery didn’t exactly become more joyous as I continued my round. They were petrifying. I should’ve given the paintings more than a cursory glance before applying for the job position.
Another painting portrayed a young girl, no more than ten years of age, who wore a bright-red pinafore, plaited brunette hair, and a blank face. Not figuratively. Blank. In place of eyes, a nose, and a mouth, there was only skin. Taut flesh, painted with smooth brushstrokes that made Harper’s intentions abundantly clear — the artist had not accidentally smudged the face. She had purposefully neglected to give the little girl any features.
Harper’s Youth Dies
As we age, we slowly come to life. We sin. They know that. They know everything.
There were countless paintings of dreadful scenes too. Cities in ruin. The end of the world. Endless infernos of melting flesh — and they were the lucky ones who were offered a swift mercy. The survivors in the apocalyptic paintings were tortured in gory, gruesome ways by dreadful, inhuman men like the one in the first painting.
I usually have a strong stomach, but something about those paintings filled me with unbearable dread. The apocalyptic art seemed so visceral. As I viewed it, I was certain I heard the screams of the last humans on Earth. Felt the heat of the flames on my skin. Saw the Exacters move.
And then there was a painting of the art gallery. The plaque read:
Prison
They entered our world, so I locked them here.
Feeling suitably terrified, I scurried to the sofa by the gallery’s entrance and plopped myself down. I work a day job, and the night shift is just my way of making ends meet. The exhaustion of that jam-packed day finally hit me. It was only when I sat down on the sofa that fatigue walloped me like a wall. My eyelids closed.
An hour later, a thrumming sound startled me awake. I twisted my head to see a notification on my phone, chuckling in relief. I opened the message from Cara, my wife, welcoming the distraction from my isolated, soundless night shift. But it was an odd message.

I was telling my mum about your new job, and she said you should look for another one. Apparently, there are always adverts for the night shift on Facebook, and her friend’s husband had a mental breakdown after one shift. He won’t talk to anyone about what happened.

There was another thrumming sound, but it wasn’t a vibration from my phone. It was a muffled voice. My head snapped up in time to catch a silhouette vanishing behind one of the gallery walls. I managed to stifle a scream, but I lost my composure and clammed up. I contemplated running out of the gallery, but something stopped me, and it wasn’t the prospect of being fired.
It was those paintings of Armageddon.
I rose to my feet, using the flashlight on my phone to illuminate the dimly-lit gallery floor. That muffled sound repeated again, haunting me — a ghostly groan of some emotion I couldn’t quite place, but I knew it terrified me. And when I rounded the corner, I found myself facing something utterly inexplicable.
The girl from Harper’s Youth Dies. A young version of Harper, I could only assume. I trembled on the spot as she took clunky steps towards me with frail, near-skeletal legs. She continued to groan, seemingly speaking beneath the flesh that covered her entire face.
“I can’t understand you,” I whispered in horror as the ghastly girl stopped a foot in front of me.
I found myself leaning forwards, driven by a force beyond my control, and then the most horrifying thing happened. My cheek twisted to the side, allowing my ear to melt through the phantom pool of the girl’s face. I screamed silently, terrified to find that I was unable to move my body or utter a sound.
Then, with my ear beneath the flesh on Harper’s horrendous, featureless face, I could finally hear the words she had been repeating in a muffled, ghoulish voice.
“Why did you close your eyes?” The malformed ghost asked in a distorted cry.
My body was suddenly hurled to the floor, and the little girl fled into the shadows. My eyes shot to the far wall, and I found that my gut achieved the impossible — it sank to a deeper realm of fear.
He was gone. The Exacter was a blank canvas. The horrible entity had escaped its painting.
Harper’s disembodied voice whispered beside my ear, scaring the life out of me. “Find him. He’s hiding.”
I looked up at the ghostly girl’s painting. Harper had returned to the canvas, but she was adopting a different pose. Her index finger was pointing at the painting of the art gallery. I yelped in fright, seeing what she had noticed. Behind one of the painted windows on the empty top floor of the building, that inhuman man stood and watched me.
Legs shaking, I walked across the gallery to the set of stairs in the back corner. They led to an out-of-bounds floor — Miss Andrews made that abundantly clear. But she also made it clear that I had to keep my eyes on the artwork, and I failed at that. I didn’t really have any options.
Quivering, I crept up the creaky wooden stairs to a floor that was littered with unhung paintings. The frames were shrouded in white sheets. And at the far end of the room, illuminated only by the moonlight which poured through the murky glass panes, I saw something truly terrifying.
The Exacter.
He stood as tall as the ceiling, and his large form was crouching over an uncovered painting. As I crept closer, I saw what had captivated the terrible creature. It was one of Harper’s apocalyptic paintings, depicting a world in flames, and the Exacter was melding its shrivelled, unclothed arm with the canvas — much as young Harper sank my ear through her flesh.
However, as I approached the abomination, casting my flashlight upon him, its flesh started to sizzle, and it unleashed a hideous hissing sound. At first I thought the light hurt it, but then I realised it had become aware of the guard’s watchful eyes upon it. I finally realised the power of keeping watch. I knew why I was there.
“Cast it away,” Harper’s voice whispered.
“How?” I cried.
The man spun around, and I screamed at the sight of his wretched white eyes. They were worse in the flesh, and he was far larger than he had appeared in the painting. The entity lunged at me, coiling its bony hands around my neck, squeezing the light out of my soul. I slipped into the darkness, and the Exacter howled at me — a howl that sounded like a boat’s horn.
“Tell it to return to its cell,” Harper croaked. “Tell it that you won’t stop looking at it until it does what you say.”
I wheezed, watching flickering images in the Exacter’s blank eyes. Prophecies of a direful destruction — a fiery vision of mankind’s end at the hands of this terrifying apparition and its demonic army. He intended to scare me, but the thought of such a horrific future only motivated me to keep my eyes open.
“I won’t stop…” I said, slowly choking. “… until you stop.”
Inhuman flesh burning beneath the weight of my vision, the Exacter screeched in fury, but I thought the world might already be doomed. If I’d passed out, I would’ve left the demon unguarded and free to wreak havoc upon mankind. But in some favourable twist of fate, it released my neck, and I fell to the ground — it, too, must have been close to death.
I crawled downstairs, and the canvases were filled with paint once more. Everything was back in its place. And the strangest thing is that I didn’t hang up my hat. I didn’t call it a day. When Miss Andrews came to the gallery at six in the morning, she seemed fully prepared to watch another traumatised guard quit the job.
But I didn’t. I couldn’t. Not after what the Exacter showed me. Too much is at stake.

I was very close with my Grandma, she was my comfort. She passed away and My parents were at the hospital with her during her last moments while my big sister (13f) was watching my brother (6) and I (5). We had a dinner of KD (Kraft Dinner mac n cheese.) and juice. My sister sent us to bed after a short call to my parents. They had told her my grandma had passed, but she didn't want to be the one to tell us, she decided to send us to bed early. Me, being full of my favourite dinner I passed out pretty quickly. Yes I was young, but I watched my grandma going from a lively person too bedridden in a short period. I knew she was sick, but I was still too young to know what death was.
I remember waking up to use the restroom and as I swung my legs over the bed, I promptly stopped seeing a purple translucent mass standing in my doorway. Like purple see-through clouds. I loudly called out for my sister as I stared at the anomaly. My first instinct of fear fading quickly. The mass started to move towards me, but I wasn't afraid anymore. Merely curious, I reached my arm out to touch and my hand went right through the cold purple mist. I knew who it was, I don't know how. I knew that was my grandma, I can't explain, but it felt like her. Just then my sister rounded the corner with a sour look on her face. She got mad at me for waking her up for nothing. She didn't see her, but I did. I kept telling her grandma was here, right beside me. Looking slightly confused and creeped out, she just told me to go to bed, nobody was there, but I knew. I knew she was saying one last goodbye. My sister left the room but not without a quick "shut up and go to bed." The mist eventually dispersed and I was left cold and tired. I was dumbfounded by the whole experience, but I was so tired I didn't think too much into it and just laid my head on my pillow and fell back asleep, completely forgetting my pee break altogether.
The next experience I remember, I was about 10yo at the time. We were living in an old Victorian style character house beside a busy highway in town and my brother and I shared the upstairs' loft. It was by definition; a creepy old house. Weird small crawl spaces and nooks and crannies. It had those old single pane windows that would rattle loudly in the wind, and old scraped wooden floorboards the creaked with every step. It was looming three stories high that looked like it was slightly crooked from the front. A large fenced backyard with apple trees and a big Oak tree that looked as if had been there since the beginning of time. There was decent amount of kids around the block that gathered at our house. Only because our parents didn't care what we did as long as we weren't breaking things or being loud inside. Most of the time we'd be outside riding our bikes, rollerblading, playing our "one of a kind" game hide and seek tag, which is pretty self explanatory. Occasionally, we would play good old hide and seek in the basement when it was rainy or gross outside. The broilelaundry room specifically, so we didn't get yelled at by our parents for causing chaos. We also played it in the dark, for more of a "scary" effect. I usually hid in one spot. It was the crawl space behind the hot water tank, raised up so it was a flat surface across the hot water tank to the crawl space. It was a large L shaped room, the small crawl space on the opposite side of the entrance. I remember easily where to go and how to get there without any light. It was always creepy, but in all darkness it didn't freak me out as much. This one particular rainy day, I was crawling back out because some of our friends complained that there were too big to get there and how I was cheating (I was cheating, don't come after me). I went to put my hand out on top of the hot water tank, as I wanted to swing my legs down. I started to lean forward and support myself with my left hand, when it felt as if I was pushed. Hard, from behind. My face collided with the hot water tank where my hand was supposed to go and I instantly got a fat lip. I could taste my blood and I let out a loud wail. My brother was at my side immediately. Once He felt the blood dripping down my chin He ran to turn on the lights. As He turned them on, I was staring straight at the crawlspace, tears in my eyes and looking into the darkness. As the lights flipped on, I saw what pushed me. It was black. Really black. Crouched in the far corner. It was only there for a split second, and gone the next. I had brushed it off, the thought of my mother distracted me. I knew She wasn't going to let us play down here in the dark now that I had gotten hurt. That very night after dinner and asleep in my bed was when the dreams started.
Our bedroom was a weird configuration. More so to accommodate the roof as it was basically the attic. There were lots of dark spots and shadowed places. It also had a door to the outside that attached to a small balcony and stairs leading all the way down to the first floor, us being on the third and top. I had my bed pushed into one of those corners. There was the wall to the outside. My bed pushed up against it, tucked tightly into the corner and flush with the standing wall, which jutted out into a small hallway-like corridor and led to the outside door. My bed was fit very snuggly in there, and reminded me of a four post bed frame. I even hung up cheap blankets on the walls for the same affect. My mother didn't love the location of my bed, but she knew I was a big girl and could make my room the way I wanted. She was just terrified people were going to break in through the door and kill us. I always remember her coming up to make sure it was locked, as when we played sometimes we would unlock it and forget about it. (We lived on a busy highway in a busy town.) She did the same this night, coming up to make sure it was locked, and making sure we were actually sleeping. I would stay up late reading with my little handheld flashlight my brother gave me. He was tired of me making him keep the lights on so I could read. While I was sitting there, engrossed in my book. I could a here ticking sound. I didn't pay too much attention to it, like I said before we lived on a highway, it got noisy sometimes. It progressively got louder and louder. My brother yelled at me to stop. I told him I wasn't doing anything. He didn't believe me of course, just told me to shut up and rolled over in his own bed, shoving the pillow over his face. I rolled my eyes and continued my reading. The ticking eventually stopped, and I drifted off to sleep with my book in hand and flashlight still on. I had dreamed of our house. I was playing hide and seek tag with my friends and brother. Such a fun time, running, laughing and playing. It was all so real, it felt like colours were brighter and more unrealistic. I was distracted with the beautiful incantation of my normally bare, creepy and sad looking home. It wasn't until I turned around to see that it was no longer my friends chasing me, but it was the black being playing with me. This fucking thing was on all fours, chasing me. My steps faltered slightly, and I got a good look at it. What I saw I will remember for the rest of my life. It was humanoid, solid black, and kind of shiny looking. Like it was coated in thick tar. Not at all see-through. It left no remnants of the black tar on the ground, though it looked like it was just a moving substance. I gapped at it. Even crouched on all of its long limbs I could tell it was big. But nimble, its arms extended to hands and it was moving solely with the tips of it's fingers brushing the ground. It didn't really have facial or body features, just slick, moving, black. It scared me so much, I came to the conclusion we weren't playing anymore as I took in it's demeanor. It was coming at me with such force it made me pick up the pace to full on sprinting. My face went from silly smiles to dread. It was trying to get to me, crawling on all fours, up walls and down them sideways, defying gravity by itself with it's weird shaped spider-like arms and fingers. I was now terrified. Thinking of escape only, I climbed up the stairs to my bedroom. First thing I ran for was my bed. Stupid, I know. Instead of an empty bed, I found my sleeping body. I was confused, but I'm right here? I paused and thought as my arms already reaching to touch my abdominal area, making sure I was me. I touched my body, and quickly stepped back. I felt myself touch my body. This was all very confusing. I looked behind me and the black being was nowhere to be found. I desperately searched the walls and roof. I took some light tentative steps over to myself, still scared but feeling my heart rate start to slow. I looked at me, laying there asleep, I was distracted by this whole ordeal. I remember thinking I didn't think I looked like that. A familiar noise caught my attention and I looked at the door, and saw it. It was tapping its black nail on the glass of the door, making a loud ticking sound. It was getting louder and louder. The dead bolt was locked to my relief. Until I watched as it takes it's black hand and starts slowly its hand in the air, turning the deadbolt on the inside. I panic. I run to my brothers bed, looking for his safety and comfort. Panicking, I see He's not there. My hands are sweaty, so I wipe them on his blanket. I didn't know what to do. So I freeze. This was too much for my 10 year old mind. My back is to the rest of the room and I'm trying to pretend it wasn't there with my eyes secured tightly shut. I listened closely so I didn't miss the footfalls. I heard nothing.. I un-scrunched my face, opening my eyes tenderly. I was so afraid I had realized that I wet my pants somewhere along the way. Reluctantly I forced my body to move. I carefully turned around to find the door open. The black being was not coming for me anymore, but slowly crawling up unto my bed. I watched as it carefully placing its hands and feet up my bed and around my sleeping body. It's head was dragging along my limp self, up my stomach and chest to my head while it creeped up the sheets. Pressing its forehead to mine, it lowered itself so it was laying on top of me. It swallowed my little body whole, paying no attention to me standing over on the other side of the room. I felt everything like I was physically laying there. I wasn't, I was standing right where I had been, by my brothers bed. I could feel the cold slimly feeling head while it slid up my body, leaving a frozen trail of wetness. I shivered, looking down to see if there was black tar on me. Feeling all of this and disgusted with the consistency, I looked over to where my body had been on my bed. I couldn't see my heart stripped PJs anymore. Just utter blackness where my body should have been. A cold like plunging into glacier water had overtaken my body and I began feeling weak. I felt so stupid. I lead it right to me, how dumb can I be? Idiot. Feeling my legs give out underneath me, and my head hit the floor. I don't remember anything after this. I do remember waking up with my book tucked neatly underneath my pillow along with my flashlight which was now off, and the outside door wide open, letting in the crisp fall morning air. I did notice some bruising on my wrists and stomach. I told my mother about it and she just told me it was a bad dream, and got mad at me for opening the door. I told her repeatedly that I hadn't done it but she ignored me. I didn't show her the bruises. Only because I could see the fear in her face. I feared that she would think that I was crazy, or that she wouldn't want me. And maybe I was nuts.
The black being was with me all the time now. It started out small, far in the distance but eventually came closer. It was simply there. I'd see it standing behind my parents at dinner, or in a corner in class. At soccer practice in the field. I never got used to it. It never said anything, despite me asking why when I was alone. I would give it glares, I would yell at it sometimes, or cry, or both. It never did or said anything back, it was just there. Watching me. In my dreams it would crawl to me. I never led it to my sleeping self again, though I would occasionally fall asleep in the wrong place and forget I was two different beings at once. I didn't know what would happen if I did lead it there. I didn't know what happened last time but I don't think it was good. I just ran and ran and ran until I woke up. My grades began to drop, I woke up tired all the time. Mostly, I would stay up as long as I can. All night if I could, anything to escape the running. I took to drinking my parents left over cold bitter coffee. I would space out staring at the thing. It would stare back. My parents took me to the doctor, a therapist, and a sleep specialist, that was interesting. I didn't want to go, but I was forced. They made me sleep in one of their facilities. It was an uncomfortable feeling sleeping somewhere I didn't know, knowing that the Thing was staring at me from across the room. Waiting to chase me in my dreams until I wake, and then rinse and repeat. I resented it. They let my mother sleep in the room with me, on their spare cot like bed. I fell asleep, and it chased me around the facility. In the morning the specialist said that from the minute I entered my deep sleep, my heart rate would go up drastically and did not mellow until I woke up. He also said my sleep REM sleep and regular sleep was not normal for a child of my age. The diagnosed me with insomnia and nightmare disorder. They sent me home with mild sleeping pills. I didn't like them. They made me groggy and it was really hard to run away in my dreams. My parents tried though. I loved them for that. Anything to help me with whatever I was going through. I tried much more when I was awake to pretend everything was okay. To ease their anxiety over me. I stopped telling them about the nightmares. I didn't know how to explain it without it coming out in child talk and getting dismissed. I was also worried I'd get taken away from my family, taken away from my everyday life and put in a insane asylum. So I just endured it, saying nothing.
After a year of this, we moved again. I was not very excited, knowing the Thing would follow me. But as always, life goes on and we moved. I loved the new house, even though it was very run down. Much more than our old house. Shitty drywall and paint was flaking off the walls, with old creaky boards all throughout. They were once painted a grey colour, which was now chipped off in the middle of hallways and rooms revealing the rotting wood boards underneath. A larger attic space upstairs with wood panelled walls and small short winding hallways and doorways became our bedrooms. Both doors to the two bedrooms upstairs were cut in half and opened separately. My older sister slept downstairs with my parents in the two rooms down there. But I didn't see the black being here. It didn't follow us into the truck, and it wasn't anywhere to be seen. I was very excited, and my parents noticed an immediate change in my demeanour. They saw me smile genuinely again. I slept in blackness, not dreaming of the black thing, not dreaming at all actually. It was nice. Honestly I would take blackness over running from fear every night. I did miss dreaming, but anything was better than that Thing chasing me. It didn't last long though. I was about to fall asleep one night, around a month or two after we settled in. I was happy and full from dinner, reading my book, fighting sleep until the next chapter so I could start another tomorrow. When the top part of my door opened, I was perplexed, not afraid. Nothing was there so I stood up to close it, and it wouldn't close. I tried and tried to no avail. I gave up. It must be stuck I thought. Having never opened it before, I assumed there was a reason it opened and wouldn't close. I went back to my bed, giving in and falling asleep. I dreamed I had woken up. Something was tapping on my mirror across the room. My first reaction was annoyance, being woken from my black slumber. I looked at it from tired eyes, half open and groggy. There it was, crawling out of my mirror. It started as a small black dot, slowly morphing into a 3D picture of the black being. It had found me. All this time it was searching for me. I was now wide awake, and I was frozen. I couldn't move from my spot on the bed. I watched as it crawled towards me, slow and calculated. It stopped in front of me. "Come." Gurgled noise came from its nonexistent mouth, along with a sickening demonic growl that made me shiver. It had never spoken before, I didn't think it could. It motioned its black hand towards itself and moved its head towards my window, the one that opened out onto the roof. I don't know why, I didn't want to. But my body started moving against my will. I stood up and it jumped on the bed behind me, to the floor, then back again. It advanced behind me, herding me on all fours. Quickly, back and forth in a sideways manner, moving closer and closer towards me like a large human spider, until I was climbing out the window. It was a cold night. I was shivering. I looked back to watched it climbed out of the window from the ceiling. Hands like sticky pads, like gravity had nothing on this thing. It continued towards the spine of the roof, its pitter patter of fingers tapping eloquently . I followed it unwillingly, my body reacting differently than my mind. I wanted to run, to hide, anything but follow this thing. My body robotically went anyway, paying no mind to my brain telling it to stop. I was at the top, on the edge facing the dimly lit pothole riddled road two stories up when I finally gained back control from the thing. I looked around for it, trying to find it. It scampered from underneath the roof, slinking by my toes, moving almost fluidly from upside-down to sideways until it perched beside me. "Jump" it commanded. No way I thought, but my body was already positioning itself closer to the edge. I looked at it. It seemed to be staring at me, though I couldn't see its eyes. It didn't have any, it was like staring into complete liquid darkness. This horrible ungodly thing had me in a trance. I was screaming at my body to stop. Trying to move just a finger, a toe, a twitch. Panic stricken all over my face, I could feel my heart pumping blood fast through my veins. All I could think was; I'm going to die. Today, Now. My body wasn't listening, it was moving, getting ready to leap off the roof. Nothing to save me, I decided to let go. I was tired of fighting. The last year and a bit was just too much for me. It cocked its head to the side as I leaped. I regained control as I plummeted to the ground. I had let out a blood curdling scream as I fell, waving my arms and legs in an attempt to land on my feet. I don't remember hitting the ground, just falling forever. When I woke, I was laying with my feet facing my head and my knees bent at the wrong angle, my body laying overtop of itself and bent at odd spots. I couldn't feel anything. My head was laying sideways on the concrete as I stared with wide eyes at what had caught my attention. It was the purple mass engulfing the black being. Swallowing it whole, it looked as if it was being pulsing and being sucked up like a vacuum. The black thing was becoming less and less visible until it was all purple and faintly glowing. It hovered for a moment, then I watched as it walked over to me and laid inside my body. It filled my whole being with light, I could feel light. Just as quick as it happened, it was gone. The black being, and my grandma. The next thing I know I blink and my mother is cradling my head, tears cascading down my face as She wailed like I've never heard before. My brother and sister huddled together in the background staring in distress at my funny looking legs. My father was on the phone with the ambulance. I started to feel all of my broken limbs and the amount of pain from jumping off of a roof. The pain was excruciating, I eventually blacked out.
The next time I regained consciousness I was in a hospital bed two weeks later. My mother was beside my bed and had fallen asleep cradling my casted arm and hand. I had broken both of my knees, my arm and wrist. 5 fingers were broken, and I had a severe concussion. I was in a coma for 13 and a half days. I recovered after an extensive amount of surgeries. I only regained thigh feeling in my left leg so for awhile I walked with arm supports. I don't see my grandma anymore. I believe She's the one who saved me. I owe my life to her. I haven't seen the black being since I was 10 years old.
Until yesterday. I was sleeping next to my husband. My boy, who is 3 1/2 and learning words comes in screaming early this morning. He kept yelling "Bwack." and urgently pointing towards our bedroom door while slapping my arm, begging to be picked up and coddled. I rubbed the sleep out of my eyes and glanced toward the doorway as I reached for him. I stopped midway, much to my little boys displeasure. There it was, standing in the doorway. Black tar like substance dripping onto the carpet in large clumped piles. I screamed so loud the neighbors called the police. My child screamed in response to my fear. I passed out. I think it was from the shock, or maybe over exhaustion of having a child. I don't know what to do anymore. It's 4 in the morning while I type this. My husband and child fast asleep beside me. The black thing is right beside me. Breathing ragged, choked breaths. The cops left after my husband explained I occasionally have night terrors. That's what I told him they were, I couldn't have my husband look at me like my family does. Nobody believes me. And it's coming for me. It's just waiting right there for me to fall asleep I can feel it. I'm terrified. I hope I'm wrong. I can't have my little man go through this. So I'm going to go to sleep now. I'm going to kill it. I have to. I have no other choice, I will protect my family at all costs. I'm staring into its oily and slithering face. Reaching into my bedside table and grabbing my handgun, I never took my eyes off of it. It cocked it's head to the side, like it had done that very night 14 years ago. I cradle my gun to my chest, close my eyes, and hope it comes with me.

Commentator: Paddy, eyes WIDE OPEN, realising his chance is here and now… to prove to Kalamity… to prove to everybody here in the FBE… that he is not just a joker, he is not the bottom of the pack… he is here TO STAY!
Charges towards Miller in the corner who pushes his forearm up and sends Paddy flying onto the apron but Paddy lands on his feet and gets his balance on the apron…
Miller with a punch, but Murphy blocks, strike of his own… BLOCKED! A HUGE SLAP to the chest of Murphy by Calcote !!! Paddy falls to a knees on the apron as the tide continues to turn in this bout!

Paddy’s eye bulge as he rolls up out of the pin and pushes the hair back that’s stuck to his forehead! Sensei… leans back and raises both arms in victory on the outside as he comes up the stairs and through the ropes to greet Murphy!!!!
Ring announcer: HERE IS YOUR WINNER…. IN THE SHINING LIGHT LEAGUE BLOCK A MATCH....... PADDY, MURPHY!!!!
Sensei goes for the samurai handshake but Paddy pulls him in for a hug before the master raises the students hand in victory, FINALLY!
Paddy climbs the turnbuckles and raises both of his arms into the air, and points to the sky!
Sensei begins to leave the ring but Paddy stands still, looking at Miller and offers the handshake… Miller accepts as the two competitors show their respect to one another! Calcote rolls out the ring holding his neck as Paddy then asks the ring announcer who is now standing back in the ring for the microphone!
The announcer reluctantly passes it over as Murphy taps it twice and addresses those watching live and at home!
Paddy: Hard work, pays off! Hard work, pays off! HARD WORK. PAYS OFF! When you go face to face with the World Class WORKING Class Gentlemen, and you come out the other side with your hand raised in victory. THAT*, is when you* KNOW, hard work PAYS OFF! 2023.03.29 20:18 Panasit WARNING! Close All Your Windows on Bugs' Night!

I woke up to what felt like a long tree branch in my bed. I tried to brush it off, but couldn’t. Curious, I grabbed it and tried to feel what it was in the dark. It was long, like a rope. Then I realized that one end of it was sticking to the side of my neck.

Then, I heard: JOOF! JOOF! JOOF! JOOF! Slurp! Slurp! Slurp! Slurp!

Frightened, I jumped and turned on the bedside lamp. What I found was this organic cord on my bed. It looked like a thick tree branch but its texture felt like a string bean. One end was attached to my neck, but I couldn’t find the other end.

It didn’t hurt until I started tugging on it. Even more so when I tried to yank it off.
I was scared. I followed this cord and it came from outside through a very small opening at the bottom of the sliding door to my bedroom’s balcony. I was suddenly overcome with a feeling of dread.

You see, tonight was ‘bugs’ night’. I hurried home as soon as I saw flying ants circling lampposts at dusk, knowing that if I don’t close all the 59 openings of my house, my floor will be covered in thousands of dying insects as early as 7 PM. Unfortunately, I missed one opening.

It was still dark outside. I turned on the balcony light and that was when I saw him.

He appeared to be an old man with white hair sticking up. He was squatting, but if he stood up straight he would probably be 8 feet tall. His huge boney arms and legs made him look like a giant spider crab.

His eyes were in a shape of a large egg and were completely black.

His mouth was a long tube, which started out straight but eventually became this twisted cord that squeezed its way into my bedroom and attached itself to my neck.

I tried to process what I was seeing. Then, the old man's cheek started to puff and deflate, puff and deflate.

JOOF! JOOF! JOOF! JOOF! Slurp! Slurp! Slurp! Slurp!

I could feel my blood being drained. I then remembered a neighbor who was found dead in her home two months ago. She died due to a huge amount of blood loss and the police didn’t know what happened.

I took out a knife from my cabinet. I slammed it hard. I knew I had to cut it off before my mind took everything in.

The cord retreated out of my room. The tube-mouth old man scampered sideways like a crab and disappeared into the darkness.

I sanitized my neck and watched for signs of infection. I will go to the doctor at sunrise, but, I had to do something I had put off first.

I screamed at the top of my lungs.

Remember to close all the openings of your house on bug’s night. Something might find its way in.

2023.03.29 20:18 realestDante RoN Titan Armor Set

Is it me or does it seem like it doesn't exactly match the style of the other two? There's a visual duality there, but I feel like it's.. Less? the crop top chestpiece that's kinda flat in the collar area, the flat carboard crown looking piece on top of the helmet, the jank thigh and leg things that look like jars.
The design langauge is there but only just. It doesn't scream titan either as it's super bottom heavy, with the skinny upper arms and pronounced crop top. I like it but I don't at the same time. The hunter and warlock sets are gorgeous and the titan set is good looking but so misshapen and proportioned funny.
I don't know if we'll ever get another 'dark' armor set but I sure as hell will feel like they really fumbled the ball on this set, thats also my favorite design language, the vascular, tormentor, rhulk, nezarec looking dark beautification.
How does everybody else feel about this? At least people that are genuinely interested in the gear we get and spend hours playing with shaders and mixing things. I personally feel discouraged with the set we got for Titan.

Chapter 1: Insight
I stepped into my apartment, placed my back to the door and sighed in relief. Thank God I was home. I hadn’t been for the past few days. I was at the hospital watching over my sister with our parents. Just when we were starting to get our hopes up. Just when we thought she was going to make a full recovery, she took a turn for the worse.
It all felt more like a curse than an affliction. My sister went from a healthy, happy-go-lucky teenager, to a fever-stricken soul, stranded somewhere between the land of the living and nonliving. She had a sudden case of sleeping beauty syndrome. The doctors didn’t know for sure, but they suspected the strange bite on her neck was the culprit. Two neat puncture wounds rationalized away as an animal bite. We all knew what it really was, it’s just that no one wanted to be the one who was crazy enough to say it.
It was like her body was slowly wasting away. Was she becoming undone, or perhaps something else altogether? Eh... Who knows. I did know one thing for sure, it was all too grim and preposterous a reality for my parents to accept. No matter what the doctors tried or how hard mom and dad prayed for her deliverance, she just kept getting worse while acting stranger.
It was like she had been pulled from the world, and we had all been pulled right along with her, into a strange new world that made no sense. Her doctors told us that at the rate she was deteriorating, she didn’t have much time left. God. I wish this was the part where I told you, “I became a superhero and saved her life.” Maybe in my own roundabout way, I did become something of her savior.
The truth is, what happened to her, I... I never saw it coming. Did vampires really exist? I couldn’t tell you how much or how long this question had tortured my mind. I was going to do some serious digging and get to the bottom of this. Because if there was any way to save her; to stop her from fading, I swore to find it.
My phone began to ring. It was my parents. They were at the hospital, keeping vigil at her bedside. I shook my head while thinking about how much of a toll her sudden illness had taken upon them. They were both so virtues and upright. Their faith in God had really been shaken. I turned my phone on silent mode. I-I didn’t want to talk to them. I needed time to grieve on my own.
I wanted a beer. No, I needed a beer. Something cold and inebriating to free my mind from the pain of watching my little sister slip away. I’m surprised I made it this long without dipping into my reserves, I thought to myself as I reached into the fridge and grabbed a cold one.
I just sat there at my kitchen table. Reliving as many memories of us together as I could. There were so many. I... I adored her more than life itself. She could do no wrong. Her smile... it... it haunts me. My God, I never knew pain like this. I had never followed my parents down the “righteous path.” I always considered myself a person of logic and reason. Simply believing in a higher power wasn’t enough for me, neither had it ever been enough to ease the void of loneliness within me.
But after this, how could I not believe in God? How could I explain away my grief? All I wanted was for this to all make sense. Maybe it was her time? Even if it was, why like this? Why so tragic and bitter? There were just too many reasons why I stopped believing. Crazy thing was, right now, I desperately wanted to believe. I wanted to close my eyes, clasp my hands together, and pray for a miracle. I tried but couldn’t bring myself to do so, no matter how strong the desire. There was no God, and a crisis wasn’t my chance to retreat.
I had seen the dark side of faith. The way my parents justified what happen to my baby sister by saying, “God has a plan” made me sick to my core. Just thinking about it made me nauseous. My faith had been stretched to the breaking point a long time ago. This was just the sad culmination of a collision between faith and obstinacy. The explosion went off like a bomb in my head. The pain was truly limitless... I just hoped her death didn’t turn me into a serial killer. I smirked at my own inane, insane thought before downing my beer.
I grabbed another beer to drown my sorrows in. Just then, there was a sudden knock at the door. The slight but unmistakable tapping surprised the crap out of me. So much so, I almost spilled my beer. I figured it was my ex. She had planned on stopping by a bit later to return my key and to pick up the last of her things.
When I looked through the peephole, I saw two people standing there in black suits. The sight threw me off and made me briefly sick to my stomach. Little did I know, I should have followed my gut instinct, but instead, I foolishly opened the door.
“Hello, Mr. Graham. My name’s Agent Adams. This is my partner, Agent Harris.”
Before I could process what was happening, Agent Harris extended her hand and said, “Pleasure.”
“Um... You too, I think? I guess? Hope I’m not in any trouble?” I told her.
“You’re not,” she smirked.
“Who are you guys again?”
“We work for the government,” she said.
“The FBI?” I asked.
“Ugh. Everyone says that. I guess it is the suits,” Agent Adams grumbled. He shook his head in annoyance before adding, “We work for the Department of Homeland Security. DPI for short. It’s the paranormal division.”
“Who again?” I asked him.
“Eh. The Department of Paranormal Investigations,” he clarified with something of an attitude.
“Huh. Never heard of it,” I spoke.
“Can we come in, Mr. Graham?” he asked.
I thought about it for a moment. I didn’t like this Agent Adams guy. He gave off a bad vibe. My first mind was to tell them to kick rocks, but I decided against being so brash and rash just in case they had a warrant. I wasn’t thinking straight. My sister’s woes weighed too mightily on my spirit. Before letting them pass, I did ask to see some identification. I’m not that stupid. Had to be sure they weren’t pulling my leg.
Agent Adams flashed his badge with a slight grumble. Agent Harris had no problem letting me see hers. She was at least pleasant, I thought while examining her government ID. I also wondered why someone so young and attractive had been stuck with someone so old and unattractive. I bet she hated her partner, I thought to myself with a smirk, as I let them pass through the door.
Agent Adams took a seat at my kitchen table without me offering. His partner looked at him a bit perplexed before waiting until I said, “It’s ok. You can have a seat.”
“Thank you,” she replied.
“So, what brings two DPI agents to my home? You sure I haven’t done anything illegal?”
“Hmm... Maybe there is something you’d like to confess, Mr. Graham,” Agent Adams spoke.
“I don’t know. Maybe I have an old parking ticket or something minor like that.”
“We don’t handle citations,” he replied.
“Sorry. Dumb question.”
“Apology rejected,” he uttered.
“Uh-hm. Forgive my partner he can be a bit—"
Agent Adams brought his hand to his chin. His abrupt gesture caused his partner to pause mid-sentence and look over at him. The two exchanged glances. He paused for a moment more before saying, “That’s a nice brand of beer. I haven’t had a cold one in a while.”
“Would you like one? I have plenty.”
“Sure.”
“Really?” I asked.
“You offered. I accepted.”
“Uh, what about you, Miss Harris?”
“It’s Agent Harris. And no.” She looked over at her partner with a raised eyebrow, “Can you not drink on the job? It’s unprofessional.”
“Fine,” he grumbled before reaching into the inner pocket of his suit coat to retrieve his vape pen.
“Are you sure? Like I said I have plenty.”
“I’m sure. I am the senior agent after all. Probably should set a better example and all,” with a wink he added, “If you survive, I’ll come back and take you up on that offer, Mr. Graham.”
“How do you know he’ll even want to participate?” his partner asked. I could hear the annoyance in her tone. She groaned before telling me, “Sorry about that.”
Agent Adams let out a heavy cloud of steam. He studied me a fair bit longer than I was comfort with. Especially someone like him, whose eyes were grey enough to sting. He took another hit from his vape pen. This time blowing the steam in my direction. His wrinkled face blocked out by the heavy cloud as he said, “Oh, he’ll join, alright. He’s not in any position to refuse.”
“That’s pretentious,” she grumbled.
“Hah. It’s the truth.”
“What the hell is this about?”
“Your sister, Mr. Graham,” he said.
“What about her?” I asked.
“We know what happened.”
“Um. Okay? Creepy.”
“Uh, what my partner is trying to say is that we might be able to help. I reviewed her chart. I think I know what the problem is,” Agent Harris explained.
“What can a couple of government agents do that a team of doctors haven’t already tried?” I asked.
“Your sister. She was bitten by a vampire, Mr. Graham,” Agent Adams stated. He paused for a moment to study my reaction before adding, “You seem like a clever guy. I’m sure you already suspected as much.”
“So, they do exist,” I mumbled to myself.
“Yes. The vampire who attacked your sister was probably desperate. He broke what are a set of well-established rules called Blood Codes.”
“Really? Vampires have rules?”
“There’s always rules, Mr. Graham.”
“Whatever. And where is this freak? I wouldn’t mind getting my hands on him.”
“He’s already been dealt with.”

“I would if I had to,” I affirmed without hesitation or reservation. I suppose I only spoke so confidently and assuredly because I thought it was a hypothetical. I mean this was the government after all. They would never ask me to do anything crazy, right? But then again, I would’ve told you you were crazy if you would have told me vampires were a real thing before my sister was attacked by one. Still, his question was odd. And the more I thought about it, the more it disturbed me.
Agent Harris chimed in, “Um, Mr. Graham, I’m sorry. I don’t know why my partner said that. You shouldn’t have to kill anyone. For you, it’s probably more a matter of participation than annihilation. If we did require you to do such a thing, rest assure, we’d provide you with all the materials necessary to succeed. Before you ask, we’re on your side, Mr. Graham. We want you to see your sister once the games have concluded.”
“The games?” I asked.
“Yes. If you enter our game, we’ll save your sister’s life. No questions asked,” she replied.
“What kind of game?”
“The Adventure Games.”
“The what games?”
“Adventure Games,” she smirked.
“What’s the catch?”
“Well, the games could be dang—”
Agent Adams quickly butted in before Agent Harris could reveal the truth. “There’s no catch, Mr. Graham. None whatsoever. Don’t listen to my partner. She can be a bit too detail orientated.”
“The devil is always in the details,” I muttered.
“But not a cure for your sister,” he coldly replied.
“Hey. What is that supposed to mean?”
“What do you think? Do you want to waste time going over the fine print, or do you want to step up to the plate and save your sister?”
I thought about it for a moment. “Eh. How do I know I can trust you to keep your word? I mean the government isn’t exactly super trustworthy.”
“Know what, I like you, Mr. Graham. Tell you what I’ll do. Humph. If you agree, we’ll transfer your sister to our facility, right away. That way she can get a jumpstart on her treatment program before you even set foot in the games,” he checked his wristwatch and added, “We can get her there by midnight. Let’s see... hmm... typical turnaround for blood sickness is what? Maybe a few hours if we play our cards right?”
“Six to eighteen hours is more accurate,” Agent Harris clarified to her partner’s chagrin.
“Close enough,” he grumbled.
Agent Harris ignored him. Turning her attention back to me, she said, “I have some good news and some bad news. Which would you like first?”
“Give me the good news.”
“Ok. Based on her chart, it looks like her affliction has progressed beyond normal blood sickness. Once we administer the antidote, she should be fine, but there’s always a chance she won’t make it. I’m sure our techs back at the lab will make the process as painless as possible for your sister. This is what I can do for you if you decide to join the project. I promise we’ll have her call you before you leave for the games.”
“Great. Where do I sign?” I asked.
Agent Adams put away his vape pen. “You don’t sign. You signing something doesn’t matter. We’re dealing with information above top secret, Mr. Graham.”
“Whatever,” I shrugged.
“There is one other thing,” Agent Harris said.
“The bad news, right?”
“Right,” she nodded.
Agent Harris looked over at her partner. She was careful not to reveal anything more until he nodded his head in approval. Some of the info they had already revealed was pushing the line above top secret into ‘black protocol’ territory, or what agents at DPI called “above top secret classification.”
Agent Adams nodded before quickly returning his attention back to vaping, retrieving the addictive device almost faster than he had put it away.
Agent Harris cleared her throat. “I’m sorry, Mr. Graham. Your sister’s illness has progressed too far. We can save her, but she won’t be human anymore. She’ll be a vampire. The transformation is irreversible I’m afraid.”
“Really? A vampire?”
“That is correct.”
“Jesus. I need a smoke,” I said as I jumped from my chair and grabbed the pack of smokes sitting on my kitchen counter. I lit one up and began pacing back and forth like a madman. With a bit of reluctance, I turned to Agent Harris and grumbled, “How fast can we get this done?”
“Now, if you agree.”
“That fast, huh?”
“Yes. We already have a team standing by. One phone call from us and they’ll began the extraction.”
“I already told you, I’m in.”
When I reaffirmed my commitment, Agent Adams looked over at his partner with a smug “I told you so” expression. He stood and extended his hand for me to shake. “Good choice, Mr. Graham. You’re a real champ.”
I shook his hand while glaring into his eyes. “You guys better not be trying to pull a fast one.”
“We wouldn’t. You’re not that important,” he smirked before blowing a cloud of steam into my face. “Goodbye, Mr. Graham. I’m sure I won’t be seeing you around,” he sarcastically added before heading for the door.
I shook Agent Harris’ hand. She removed her shades and told me, “Good luck, Mr. Graham.”
“What do I do next?”
“Pack light and wait.”
“Really? That’s it?”
“Yeah. We’ll be back in a couple of hours to take you to prescreening.”
“Sounds fair.”
“Good to hear.”
“So, what are these ‘Adventure Games’ anyway?”
She placed her shades back on. Her expression distant and cold. “Sit tight. We have to make a few arrangements and finish up some paperwork on our end before I can reveal any information. I’m sure the paperwork will get approved by the time we come back for you. Once this happens, I’ll explain everything you need to know.”
I just stood there dumbfounded by the moment. I could hear Agent Harris discussing Agent Adams’ conduct as they let themselves out and began making their way down the hall. Apparently, Agent Harris was disappointed that he had asked me for a beer. She pointed out that this was an obvious workplace violation, and how he could be terminated for his conduct. He found her chiding amusing and told her he had no intentions on drinking on the job. When he made this claim, she was incredulous and asked what possessed him to even ask in the first place.
I could barely hear them at this point since they were standing by the elevator. But I believe his response was something on the lines of, “I wanted to read his reaction. If he handled himself wisely, I knew we wouldn’t have a problem recruiting him for the games.”
“And if he reacted poorly?” she asked.
“Well then, your little behavioral profile would have been wrong, and we would’ve had a head start on finding his replacement,” he told her.
I closed the door in disgust. I had no idea what I was getting myself into, or if they could even be trusted. I knew it too. That cliché feeling had reached all the way down to my gut. My conscience... the good angel on my shoulder was telling me to run.
With a heavy heart, I chose to ignore the voice. My sister’s life hung in the balance. Sometimes in life you had to take risks. My choice to go along with these agents and their dubious claims wasn’t a tough or noble act. It was one wrought from desperation. What were my options? Not joining meant my sister would waste away until it was too late. Phew. This was a lot of pressure. My back was against the wall literally and figuratively.
I let out a long sigh and mustered the courage to begin packing. I hadn’t gotten much sleep either. Hopefully the car ride to wherever we were going would be a long one, and I could get some much-needed rest, I thought to myself as I shoved way too many things into my bag.
Tears escaped from my eyes. I had to stay the course. I had to hear her voice. I finally broke down and prayed to God, asking him to look over me. I still didn’t believe. I don’t know why I did it. I guess out of hope or necessity. My sister meant the world to me, and my parents, I don’t know what they would do if she perished.

Another Angel walked into the room, through one of the endless doors surrounding the perimeter.
The Angel cleared his throat, “God?”
God didn’t turn around, He kept His head dipped low into his desk, His white beard brushed a pile of parchment.
The Angel—named Michael—sighed then snapped his fingers: the younger angel disappeared in a puff of smoke; the last note they plucked whispered through the room. Adjusting his wings like a cloak around him, Michael spoke again.
“God, it’s happened again. The man ate the fruit.” The Angel rubbed his temples and watched the back of God’s head through grimaced eyes.
God momentarily stilled, then slowly ushered the Angel closer: His movements cracked through space like a mountain crumbling above them. Michael crispy walked to God’s side, expertly dodging the moving instruments.
“…I keep re-running the model in my head—over a trillion times—and every time he eats the damn thing!” Said Michael in outrage, “…we’ve….em… possibly miscalculated, with this world.” His wings fluttered noiselessly at his sides, and his clasped hands revealed dark blue veins winding up chiseled arms.
God didn’t look up, instead He took a golden pencil from a drawer and a sheaf of translucent paper. Then, very slowly, God wrote two words.
God handed the note to Michael, then snapped His fingers and was alone in the room.
Michael, now back in the Angles lab, sat down at his mahogany desk. Other, less important Angles, fluttered about him.
Making sure no one watched, he placed his golden spectacles gingerly on his nose, and furtively opened God's note. Two words shone under the lamplight.
“…Men’s Folly?” Mouthed Michael curiously. The note suddenly melted into his hand, then a blindingly stark notion entered his mind: one of pure insight and circular understanding.
“That’s it!” Michael shot out of his desk and scurried to rebuild the earthly model. However, now, he calibrated it with one parameter in mind.
He worked tirelessly through centuries (including a few long weekends) and in the end the model converged, and Man triumphed.
Wiping a single bead of sweat off his brow, the Angel Michael leaned back and observed his work. While doing so, another Angel walked by and stopped to look over Michael’s shoulder.
“Ah, you got the World to run! And how did you manage that with the bloke always eating the apple?”
Michael, with a beatific smile, turned to face the other angel.
“Well, as you know, the model failed to reach steady state and crashed every time he ate the apple —because,” Michael took off his glasses to give them a clean, “... men can’t bear to take any blame, you see.”
The other Angel nodded knowingly.
“I mean, it really caused ungodly chaos…”
The other Angel shrugged empathetically.
“So, I blamed it on the women!”
Together, the Angels looked down at the tiny levitating model of earth, which slowly rotated on its axis.
“Ingenious!”

As a child it was not unusual for me to sit in my dad's lap with my hands on the steering wheel while he drove. Of course his hands were on top of mine; he controlled the vehicle.
It was a different era. Car seats were not mandatory for children back then.
We didn't even wear seatbelts. I didn't know anyone who did.
My dad had always told me that he would teach me to drive and I had no reason to doubt him. We took many hours long drives along the flat, barren West Texas/New Mexico highways. Accordingly, I assumed I would learn to drive on those roads.
So when my dad pulled his steel blue 63 Oldsmobile F-84, with its "rare 215 V8 Turbo-Rocket power plant," over at a look out point along the twisting, curving Sandia Mountain Byway, telling me to get out so we could trade places, I was perplexed--and frightened. Especially since he had pointed out what was left of some rusted old wrecks that had seemingly plummeted off a particularly narrow and treacherous bluff along the way.
At first I told him I didn't understand, and I didn't-- for the most part.
"Just do what I tell you," he said.
I told him I didn't want to.
"I don't care what you want. I'm going to teach you to drive, just like I always said I would."
I began to cry, but he wasn't moved by my tears.
"You want me to buy you a car don't you?" he asked.
I nodded even though I couldn't wrap my head around what he was saying. I did want him to teach me to drive, but not on a mountain byway, and I did want him to buy me a car, but I was only eleven.
"Then you need to do what I tell you to. And you need to do it now," he said.
There was very little emotion in his voice, but his thin lips were stretched taunt into a sneer with just a sliver of his crooked bottom teeth showing. I had seen that sneer before when he was toying with the owner of the Chevron station who owed him money.
I switched places with him.
He slid across the wide bucket seat so that he was halfway on my seat with one leg over the console.
"Put your foot on the brake," he commanded.
I did.
"Push down on it, hard."
I did.
He shifted the transmission out of park. "Now ease your foot off the brake."
I did and the car began roll, beside the sidewalk of the lookout, toward the Byway.
As we neared the exit he told me to ease my foot down on the pedal. The car lurched. He slammed on the brakes.
"Easy!"
He didn't yell, but his voice was unnaturally low and gruff. I had heard the tone before, his mad voice, when he was scolding his dog Cho-Cho.
He let off the brake and the car started to roll again. "Ease your foot onto the pedal," he instructed.
I did.
"Press the pedal."
I did, but just barely because we were about to enter the mountain byway and I was terrified.
"Go! Go! Press the pedal damn it!"
I froze with fear. He mashed his foot down on mine. Again the car lurched but quickly evened out with acceleration.
"Steer to the road!" he demanded.
I did my best.
"Maintain your speed!"
But I was deathly afraid of the accelerator.
Again he mashed my foot on the pedal with his own...and so it went for a few miles--no more than ten, I would say--along the Sandia Mountain Byway.
Finally, or so it seemed, he allowed me to pull over. He put the car into park. He instructed me to get out and to get into the back seat where my brother was.
"Johnson," he said referring to my brother who was three and a half years younger than me and whose name is Henry, "you come up here and sit with me."

2023.03.29 20:05 Glass_Alarm6863 My comprehensive Vive XR Elite thoughts, experiences, and ideas for how HTC can fix its flaws.

I got ahold of my XR Elite on Sunday and have been analyzing and testing it since. I'll be going through everything I've taken note of so far.
First of all, the biggest problem with the headset right now is that the hardware was released before the software was finished. What I mean is, the OS has an early Beta/Late Alpha feel to it. Hand tracking inputs aren't tuned very well at all, despite being accurate. Pinching is way too overly-sensitive, resulting in unintended inputs, and those inputs aren't handled by the UI very well either (setting up a boundary with your hand is nearly impossible). In addition, they didn't wait until a stable software library was ready before throwing it into people's hands. On top of that, many apps you actually can download aren't even configured to work with the controllers, some of those being first party Vive Studio apps. This makes HTC look very unprofessional, and the result is it being next to useless as a standalone until the expected apps are available and existing ones fixed. These aspects will probably solve themselves within the next 6 months or so, but the damage of weak first impressions has already been done. I'm confident that they can fix this as there's some impressive stuff that is there (the way it distorts your passthrough image to correct the relative position of your virtual hand/controller despite only having one camera, for example), they just need time.
Next, I want to talk about the PCVR experience. Since there's not really any standalone support right now, this is where any current user will spend most of their time. I'll start by saying that the SteamVR integration for stand-alone headsets is second to none. Rather than have a clunky multi-step system, it's so simple that your PCVR games show up in the local library itself without needing to toggle settings or navigate menus. It's a one-time set up and you're good to go. It even supports hand tracking as a PCVR input, something the Quest lineup doesn't allow. Now as far as the actual experience, here's where they made some really big oversights. The streaming quality is excellent, equal to the quest 2 or even better (I unfortunately gave my Quest 2 to a family member, so I can only compare from memory), but the default settings make it appear terrible. The thing that makes this really bad is that actually knowing that settings to configure this exist aren't clearly delivered to the user. They exist only within the Vive Streaming Hub settings itself, and don't appear in the Headset's UI at all. Simply adding quality settings under the PC connection tab in the headset would solve this misconception. This could also be helped by making the default quality settings context and environment dependent (default to max settings on USB or Wifi6/6e, or lower if PC has low VRAM). I started off being really disappointed with the default compressed quality, but when I found those settings and bumped them up, I was greeted with a beautiful native looking picture. In addition, there's another setting in the Streaming Hub that's enabled by default called compatibility mode. This causes Steam VR to see your controller as Cosmos controllers, which is a horrible idea because only a tiny fraction of games even support that controller to begin with. I've found that letting SteamVR see the XR controllers for what they really are works in games almost 100% of the time. This should absolutely be off by default and accessible in the Headset's connections tab UI too. There's also another oversight in the Vive Streaming Hub, it has an always on Foveated rendering, probably because the Focus 3 was what the app was built for. If this can be disabled, I haven't figured it out.
So in fewer words, the PCVR experience can be and is decent if not great, but the defaults provide a subpar experience and it's not intuitive or obvious how to make it better.
Now for comfort and hardware. This headset was marketed as extremely comfortable, and in certain conditions it is, but for most, it's the most uncomfortable headset I've ever worn. Nearly all of the problems seem to stem from the pancake lens implementation. The lenses are very small, circular, and the diopters prevent it from being bigger or shapier. In a standard headset you typically want to tighten down to get a good FOV. In the XR Elite, this doesn't work. The top of the facial interface has a hard plastic forehead rest that absolutely kill any comfort you may have had. I think this part could easily be solved by making it hard rubber instead, or something similar, which can easily be done in a hardware revision like the Quest 2 did with it's facial interface. Though, the probable reason why it's like that is because you can't actually go closer than it wants you to. Unlike most Fresnel lensed headsets, or even the Quest Pro, there's no angled cutout on the lens to factor your nose, so pushing your face closer will actually force the lenses apart. It's just literally incapable of being closer to your face, so if your head shape is more curved than flat, coupled with the reduced lens size created by having diopters, you're going to have a very small FOV. Using these in glasses mode with the top strap used as a back strap is probably the most comfortable (and surprisingly stable) way to use this headset, it's genuinely impressive, but you lose an extra 5 to 10 degrees of FOV or so on an already small FOV. So how can this be fixed? Without significant hardware changes, this is probably impossible, but if it were to be redesigned I would absolutely cant the lenses at an angle or drop the diopter and in favor of a lens shape that factors the nose placement. The pancake lenses themselves don't seem to offer any substantial benefit, as the god-rays are replaced by general glare instead and the larger edge-to-edge clarity is offset by the overall loss of FOV.
Now for the price to value aspect. HTC really wants to sell this as a consumer product going against the Pico 4 and Quest 2, but the reality is that the price determines what people compare it to, not the labels. A consumer willing to pay $1100 for a headset is probably also considering a Quest Pro, a Vive Focus 3, a Vive Pro 2, a Pimax 8KX or Crystal. Even staying within the Vive ecosystem, while I don't own a Focus 3, I do own a Pro 2 (which shares a lot with the Focus 3), and the Vive Pro 2 is hands down a far superior VR experience in every category (it's even far more comfortable), for about the same price. The quality difference between Focus 3 and XR Elite feels like a Quest 2 to Quest Pro gap, not the small marginal gap the XR Elite/Focus 3 prices would have you assume. Since the stand alone library doesn't really exist yet, it can only be measured as a PCVR headset, and as one, it falls very short. If I were Vive, I would really double down on making the stand alone library as healthy as possible. Do whatever you need to do, pay developers to port, just get it there. Use that library to strengthen the value of Viveport to gain more subscriptions. Good, now you have the revenue stream that makes it possible to lower the price of the XR Elite. Drop it to at least $800 as soon as possible and aim for $600 or so as a long-term goal. If the product has a reason to be used and the cost is right, people will use it. Content attracts users, users attract developers, and developers create content. Fail to realize this early on, and you become a Sega Saturn/PS Vita/Philips CD-I. HTC needs to realize that they're in the console market now, not simply the hardware market. Different rules apply for success. Also, HTC, stop trying to bank on attracting the Crypto crowd. They aren't a goldmine more profitable than the users you already have. They aren't paying customers, they're customers expecting to be paid.
I've seen quality control issues floating around, seemingly on par with Pico 4 issues. I'm among those effected, as I have a dead pixel on my headset. I've never had issues with Vive headsets before, so I think this is probably a result of them trying to push out too many headsets too fast. This is very bad on their part, and it seems they've greatly underestimated the importance of a good initial launch. Early reviews are one of the deciding factors on whether hardware sinks or swims, and because of the rush, nearly everyone that has one is disappointed, and their reviews are what future customers base their decisions on. It didn't need to be that way. Had the higherups simply had the foresight to allow the XR Elite to be completed before launch and making sure each headset shipped wasn't defective, the odds of it succeeding would have been astronomically higher. Since they didn't, most people are returning their headsets and potential buyers are rightfully steering clear due to the bad launch press. Just look at the Steam Deck, people had to wait a long time to get theirs, it made them restless and angry, but at the end of the day the product they got was exactly as promised 99.9% of the time, and as a result it's praised as a great success despite taking a long time to get in people's hands. Most of us would have preferred to wait for a good product than get an undercooked one now (whether we consciously realize that or not).
Despite the current state, I'm not returning mine. It does what I need it to do as a developer, I have other headsets to do what it can't, and I'm willing to wait for the software side to get better with time. Since Pico might never come to the USA, this is pretty much the only semi-competent Meta alternative in the states until Deckard shows up in a decade or two. Hope this was useful to someone.

Hi!
I am moving and have a massive desk that will not fit in my new apartment. It has four detachable legs. I imagine there must be a way to get a piece of wood—I'm not picky, as long as it is flat and fits—cut to the size of the nook I plan to place my desk in at my new place. Does anyone know of a place you could get a piece of wood suitable for a desk/table top cut to size in toronto. I am pretty ambivalent to the type of wood, plywood would even work! It just has to be thick and sturdy. I have no experience working with power tools, nor do I own any.

2 weeks ago, my Steam Deck fell from my desk and the screen broke. I was really upset, and though I knew I could get a replacement screen easily, it looked like it was a very complicated fix.
Well, last night I got the replacement and went forward with the replacement. I have to say, it was an extremely easy swap. I had never done something like this and was nervous, but the instructions were clear and everything went well. The only trouble I had was getting the suction cup to actually adhere. I basically had to cram a screwdriver into the space to "break" the glass to pry it open enough.
I certainly appreciate more now how consumer friendly this device is. If all it takes to fix an issue is a little money and enough spatial reasoning to build a LEGO, than I have a feeling the Steam Deck will be lasting for many many years.

I need to built a table for a 700lb steel printing press. It’s going to be 42x72”. It’s going to be on casters. It needs to be able to be disassembled/reassembled so it can get through doorways/move house in the future. this is the tricky part.
Currently plans involve using 4x4 legs and 2x4 framing.
I’ve considered building it out in pieces and then using carriage bolts for assembly/disassembly. Legs, then top, then shelf. But I’m hesitant to place that much weight on hardware.
Also considered building the whole thing slotted together with castle joints- but worried those aren’t going to be strong enough.
Does anyone have thoughts/ideas on how they’d do this?
